In this paper, we focus on the One-shot Novel View Synthesis (O-NVS) task which targets synthesizing photo-realistic novel views given only one reference image per scene. Previous One-shot Generalizable Neural Radiance Fields (OG-NeRF) methods solve this task in an inference-time finetuning-free manner, yet suffer the blurry issue due to the encoder-only architecture that highly relies on the limited reference image. On the other hand, recent diffusion-based image-to-3d methods show vivid plausible results via distilling pre-trained 2D diffusion models into a 3D representation, yet require tedious per-scene optimization. Targeting these issues, we propose the GD$^2$-NeRF, a Generative Detail compensation framework via GAN and Diffusion that is both inference-time finetuning-free and with vivid plausible details. In detail, following a coarse-to-fine strategy, GD$^2$-NeRF is mainly composed of a One-stage Parallel Pipeline (OPP) and a 3D-consistent Detail Enhancer (Diff3DE). At the coarse stage, OPP first efficiently inserts the GAN model into the existing OG-NeRF pipeline for primarily relieving the blurry issue with in-distribution priors captured from the training dataset, achieving a good balance between sharpness (LPIPS, FID) and fidelity (PSNR, SSIM). Then, at the fine stage, Diff3DE further leverages the pre-trained image diffusion models to complement rich out-distribution details while maintaining decent 3D consistency. Extensive experiments on both the synthetic and real-world datasets show that GD$^2$-NeRF noticeably improves the details while without per-scene finetuning.

Whole-slide image (WSI) classification is a challenging task because 1) patches from WSI lack annotation, and 2) WSI possesses unnecessary variability, e.g., stain protocol. Recently, Multiple-Instance Learning (MIL) has made significant progress, allowing for classification based on slide-level, rather than patch-level, annotations. However, existing MIL methods ignore that all patches from normal slides are normal. Using this free annotation, we introduce a semi-supervision signal to de-bias the inter-slide variability and to capture the common factors of variation within normal patches. Because our method is orthogonal to the MIL algorithm, we evaluate our method on top of the recently proposed MIL algorithms and also compare the performance with other semi-supervised approaches. We evaluate our method on two public WSI datasets including Camelyon-16 and TCGA lung cancer and demonstrate that our approach significantly improves the predictive performance of existing MIL algorithms and outperforms other semi-supervised algorithms. This paper introduces a novel neural audio codec targeting high waveform sampling rates and low bitrates named APCodec, which seamlessly integrates the strengths of parametric codecs and waveform codecs. The APCodec revolutionizes the process of audio encoding and decoding by concurrently handling the amplitude and phase spectra as audio parametric characteristics like parametric codecs. It is composed of an encoder and a decoder with the modified ConvNeXt v2 network as the backbone, connected by a quantizer based on the residual vector quantization (RVQ) mechanism. The encoder compresses the audio amplitude and phase spectra in parallel, amalgamating them into a continuous latent code at a reduced temporal resolution. This code is subsequently quantized by the quantizer. Ultimately, the decoder reconstructs the audio amplitude and phase spectra in parallel, and the decoded waveform is obtained by inverse short-time Fourier transform. To ensure the fidelity of decoded audio like waveform codecs, spectral-level loss, quantization loss, and generative adversarial network (GAN) based loss are collectively employed for training the APCodec. To support low-latency streamable inference, we employ feed-forward layers and causal convolutional layers in APCodec, incorporating a knowledge distillation training strategy to enhance the quality of decoded audio. Experimental results confirm that our proposed APCodec can encode 48 kHz audio at bitrate of just 6 kbps, with no significant degradation in the quality of the decoded audio. At the same bitrate, our proposed APCodec also demonstrates superior decoded audio quality and faster generation speed compared to well-known codecs, such as SoundStream, Encodec, HiFi-Codec and AudioDec.

Inpainting involves filling in missing pixels or areas in an image, a crucial technique employed in Mixed Reality environments for various applications, particularly in Diminished Reality (DR) where content is removed from a user's visual environment. Existing methods rely on digital replacement techniques which necessitate multiple cameras and incur high costs. AR devices and smartphones use ToF depth sensors to capture scene depth maps aligned with RGB images. Despite speed and affordability, ToF cameras create imperfect depth maps with missing pixels. To address the above challenges, we propose Hierarchical Inpainting GAN (HI-GAN), a novel approach comprising three GANs in a hierarchical fashion for RGBD inpainting. EdgeGAN and LabelGAN inpaint masked edge and segmentation label images respectively, while CombinedRGBD-GAN combines their latent representation outputs and performs RGB and Depth inpainting. Edge images and particularly segmentation label images as auxiliary inputs significantly enhance inpainting performance by complementary context and hierarchical optimization. We believe we make the first attempt to incorporate label images into inpainting process.Unlike previous approaches requiring multiple sequential models and separate outputs, our work operates in an end-to-end manner, training all three models simultaneously and hierarchically. Specifically, EdgeGAN and LabelGAN are first optimized separately and further optimized inside CombinedRGBD-GAN to enhance inpainting quality. Experiments demonstrate that HI-GAN works seamlessly and achieves overall superior performance compared with existing approaches.

While displaying impressive generation capabilities across many tasks, Large Language Models (LLMs) still struggle with crucial issues of privacy violation and unwanted exposure of sensitive data. This raises an essential question: how should we prevent such undesired behavior of LLMs while maintaining their strong generation and natural language understanding (NLU) capabilities? In this work, we introduce a novel approach termed deliberate imagination in the context of LLM unlearning. Instead of trying to forget memorized data, we employ a self-distillation framework, guiding LLMs to deliberately imagine alternative scenarios. As demonstrated in a wide range of experiments, the proposed method not only effectively unlearns targeted text but also preserves the LLMs' capabilities in open-ended generation tasks as well as in NLU tasks. Our results demonstrate the usefulness of this approach across different models and sizes, and also with parameter-efficient fine-tuning, offering a novel pathway to addressing the challenges with private and sensitive data in LLM applications.

Charts play a vital role in data visualization, understanding data patterns, and informed decision-making. However, their unique combination of graphical elements (e.g., bars, lines) and textual components (e.g., labels, legends) poses challenges for general-purpose multimodal models. While vision-language models trained on chart data excel in comprehension, they struggle with generalization. To address these challenges, we propose ChartAssistant, a chart-based vision-language model for universal chart comprehension and reasoning. ChartAssistant leverages ChartSFT, a comprehensive dataset covering diverse chart-related tasks with basic (e.g. bars and pies) and specialized (e.g. radars, and bubbles) chart types. It undergoes a two-stage training process, starting with pre-training on chart-to-table parsing to align chart and text, followed by multitask instruction-following fine-tuning. This approach enables ChartAssistant to achieve competitive performance across various chart tasks. Experimental results demonstrate significant performance gains over the state-of-the-art UniChart and Chartllama method, especially outperforming them on real-world chart data with zero-shot setting. In this work, we propose an efficient Video-Language Alignment via Frame-Prompting and Distilling (VLAP) network. Our VLAP model addresses both efficient frame sampling and effective cross-modal alignment in a unified way. In our VLAP network, we design a new learnable question-aware Frame-Prompter together with a new cross-modal distillation (QFormer-Distiller) module. Pre-trained large image-language models have shown promising results on problems such as visual question answering. However, how to efficiently and effectively sample image frames when adapting pre-trained large image-language model to video-language alignment is still the major challenge. Compared with prior work, our VLAP model demonstrates the capability of selecting key frames with critical contents, thus improving the video-language alignment accuracy while reducing the inference latency (+3.3% on NExT-QA Temporal with 3.0X speed up). Overall, our VLAP network outperforms (e.g. +4.6% on STAR Interaction and +2.2% on STAR average with 3.0X speed up, ours 2-frames out-perform SeViLA 4-frames on VLEP with 4.2X speed up) the state-of-the-art methods on the video question-answering benchmarks.

Real-world black-box optimization often involves time-consuming or costly experiments and simulations. Multi-fidelity optimization (MFO) stands out as a cost-effective strategy that balances high-fidelity accuracy with computational efficiency through a hierarchical fidelity approach. This survey presents a systematic exploration of MFO, underpinned by a novel text mining framework based on a pre-trained language model. We delve deep into the foundational principles and methodologies of MFO, focusing on three core components -- multi-fidelity surrogate models, fidelity management strategies, and optimization techniques. Additionally, this survey highlights the diverse applications of MFO across several key domains, including machine learning, engineering design optimization, and scientific discovery, showcasing the adaptability and effectiveness of MFO in tackling complex computational challenges. Furthermore, we also envision several emerging challenges and prospects in the MFO landscape, spanning scalability, the composition of lower fidelities, and the integration of human-in-the-loop approaches at the algorithmic level. We also address critical issues related to benchmarking and the advancement of open science within the MFO community. Overall, this survey aims to catalyze further research and foster collaborations in MFO, setting the stage for future innovations and breakthroughs in the field.

In this paper, we present a novel framework for enhancing the performance of Quanvolutional Neural Networks (QuNNs) by introducing trainable quanvolutional layers and addressing the critical challenges associated with them. Traditional quanvolutional layers, although beneficial for feature extraction, have largely been static, offering limited adaptability. Unlike state-of-the-art, our research overcomes this limitation by enabling training within these layers, significantly increasing the flexibility and potential of QuNNs. However, the introduction of multiple trainable quanvolutional layers induces complexities in gradient-based optimization, primarily due to the difficulty in accessing gradients across these layers. To resolve this, we propose a novel architecture, Residual Quanvolutional Neural Networks (ResQuNNs), leveraging the concept of residual learning, which facilitates the flow of gradients by adding skip connections between layers. By inserting residual blocks between quanvolutional layers, we ensure enhanced gradient access throughout the network, leading to improved training performance. Moreover, we provide empirical evidence on the strategic placement of these residual blocks within QuNNs. Through extensive experimentation, we identify an efficient configuration of residual blocks, which enables gradients across all the layers in the network that eventually results in efficient training. Our findings suggest that the precise location of residual blocks plays a crucial role in maximizing the performance gains in QuNNs. Our results mark a substantial step forward in the evolution of quantum deep learning, offering new avenues for both theoretical development and practical quantum computing applications.

Diffusion-based image generation models such as DALL-E 3 and Stable Diffusion-XL demonstrate remarkable capabilities in generating images with realistic and unique compositions. Yet, these models are not robust in precisely reasoning about physical and spatial configurations of objects, especially when instructed with unconventional, thereby out-of-distribution descriptions, such as "a chair with five legs". In this paper, we propose a language agent with chain-of-3D-thoughts (L3GO), an inference-time approach that can reason about part-based 3D mesh generation of unconventional objects that current data-driven diffusion models struggle with. More concretely, we use large language models as agents to compose a desired object via trial-and-error within the 3D simulation environment. To facilitate our investigation, we develop a new benchmark, Unconventionally Feasible Objects (UFO), as well as SimpleBlenv, a wrapper environment built on top of Blender where language agents can build and compose atomic building blocks via API calls. Human and automatic GPT-4V evaluations show that our approach surpasses the standard GPT-4 and other language agents (e.g., ReAct and Reflexion) for 3D mesh generation on ShapeNet. Moreover, when tested on our UFO benchmark, our approach outperforms other state-of-the-art text-to-2D image and text-to-3D models based on human evaluation.

In this paper, we propose a novel Feature Decomposition and Reconstruction Learning (FDRL) method for effective facial expression recognition. We view the expression information as the combination of the shared information (expression similarities) across different expressions and the unique information (expression-specific variations) for each expression. More specifically, FDRL mainly consists of two crucial networks: a Feature Decomposition Network (FDN) and a Feature Reconstruction Network (FRN). In particular, FDN first decomposes the basic features extracted from a backbone network into a set of facial action-aware latent features to model expression similarities. Then, FRN captures the intra-feature and inter-feature relationships for latent features to characterize expression-specific variations, and reconstructs the expression feature. To this end, two modules including an intra-feature relation modeling module and an inter-feature relation modeling module are developed in FRN. Experimental results on both the in-the-lab databases (including CK+, MMI, and Oulu-CASIA) and the in-the-wild databases (including RAF-DB and SFEW) show that the proposed FDRL method consistently achieves higher recognition accuracy than several state-of-the-art methods. This clearly highlights the benefit of feature decomposition and reconstruction for classifying expressions.
