This paper considers the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted communication scenario, where an RIS is used to assist the base station (BS) for serving multiple users. The RIS consisting of passive reflecting elements can manipulate the reflected direction of the incoming electromagnetic waves and thus it offers a new design dimension to the system designer. To maximize the sum rate, the active beamforming at the BS and the passive phase shifts at the RIS need to be jointly optimized, which is an NP-hard problem. In this work, we consider the joint active and passive (JAPB) beamforming problem over correlated fading channels. To facilitate practical implementation, we propose two low-complexity schemes along with user grouping to solve JAPB. Besides, we theoretically analyze the mean correlation coefficient between two cascade RIS channels and obtain a closed-form expression for arbitrary phase-shift values. Asymptotic analysis is also conducted to get insights into the channel correlation of cascade RIS channels when the numbers of BS antennas and RIS elements are large. Simulation results are presented to validate the analysis accuracy of the derived mean correlation coefficient. Also, the sum rate performance of the proposed methods under different system settings is evaluated and compared with the benchmark that optimizes the RIS phase shifts using element-wise successive refinement.

This paper investigates a new downlink nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system, where a multiantenna unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is powered by wireless power transfer (WPT) and serves as the base station for multiple pairs of ground users (GUs) running NOMA in each pair. An energy efficiency (EE) maximization problem is formulated to jointly optimize the WPT time and the placement for the UAV, and the allocation of the UAV's transmit power between different NOMA user pairs and within each pair. To efficiently solve this nonconvex problem, we decompose the problem into three subproblems using block coordinate descent. For the subproblem of intra-pair power allocation within each NOMA user pair, we construct a supermodular game with confirmed convergence to a Nash equilibrium. Given the intra-pair power allocation, successive convex approximation is applied to convexify and solve the subproblem of WPT time allocation and inter-pair power allocation between the user pairs. Finally, we solve the subproblem of UAV placement by using the Lagrange multiplier method. Simulations show that our approach can substantially outperform its alternatives that do not use NOMA and WPT techniques or that do not optimize the UAV location.

We present AUQ-ADMM, an adaptive uncertainty-weighted consensus ADMM method for solving large-scale convex optimization problems in a distributed manner. Our key contribution is a novel adaptive weighting scheme that empirically increases the progress made by consensus ADMM scheme and is attractive when using a large number of subproblems. The weights are related to the uncertainty associated with the solutions of each subproblem, and are efficiently computed using low-rank approximations. We show AUQ-ADMM provably converges and demonstrate its effectiveness on a series of machine learning applications, including elastic net regression, multinomial logistic regression, and support vector machines. We provide an implementation based on the PyTorch package.

The adoption of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for public safety applications has skyrocketed in the last years. Leveraging on Physical Random Access Channel (PRACH) preambles, in this paper we pioneer a novel localization technique for UAVs equipped with cellular base stations used in emergency scenarios. We exploit the new concept of Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS) modulation (tolerant to channel Doppler spread caused by UAVs motion) to build a fully standards-compliant OTFS-modulated PRACH transmission and reception scheme able to perform time-of-arrival (ToA) measurements. First, we analyze such novel ToA ranging technique, both analytically and numerically, to accurately and iteratively derive the distance between localized users and the points traversed by the UAV along its trajectory. Then, we determine the optimal UAV speed as a trade-off between the accuracy of the ranging technique and the power needed by the UAV to reach and keep its speed during emergency operations. Finally, we demonstrate that our solution outperforms standard PRACH-based localization techniques in terms of Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) by about 20% in quasi-static conditions and up to 80% in high-mobility conditions.

We study the joint active/passive beamforming and channel blocklength (CBL) allocation in a non-ideal reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided ultra-reliable and low-latency communication (URLLC) system. The considered scenario is a finite blocklength (FBL) regime and the problem is solved by leveraging a novel deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm named twin-delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (TD3). First, assuming an industrial automation system with multiple actuators, the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio and achievable rate in the FBL regime are identified for each actuator in terms of the phase shift configuration matrix at the RIS. Next, the joint active/passive beamforming and CBL optimization problem is formulated where the objective is to maximize the total achievable FBL rate in all actuators, subject to non-linear amplitude response at the RIS elements, BS transmit power budget, and total available CBL. Since the amplitude response equality constraint is highly non-convex and non-linear, we resort to employing an actor-critic policy gradient DRL algorithm based on TD3. The considered method relies on interacting RIS with the industrial automation environment by taking actions which are the phase shifts at the RIS elements, CBL variables, and BS beamforming to maximize the expected observed reward, i.e., the total FBL rate. We assess the performance loss of the system when the RIS is non-ideal, i.e., with non-linear amplitude response, and compare it with ideal RIS without impairments. The numerical results show that optimizing the RIS phase shifts, BS beamforming, and CBL variables via the proposed TD3 method is highly beneficial to improving the network total FBL rate as the proposed method with deterministic policy outperforms conventional methods.

Reinforcement Learning (RL) approaches are lately deployed for orchestrating wireless communications empowered by Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs), leveraging their online optimization capabilities. Most commonly, in RL-based formulations for realistic RISs with low resolution phase-tunable elements, each configuration is modeled as a distinct reflection action, resulting to inefficient exploration due to the exponential nature of the search space. In this paper, we consider RISs with 1-bit phase resolution elements, and model the action of each of them as a binary vector including the feasible reflection coefficients. We then introduce two variations of the well-established Deep Q-Network (DQN) and Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG) agents, aiming for effective exploration of the binary action spaces. For the case of DQN, we make use of an efficient approximation of the Q-function, whereas a discretization post-processing step is applied to the output of DDPG. Our simulation results showcase that the proposed techniques greatly outperform the baseline in terms of the rate maximization objective, when large-scale RISs are considered. In addition, when dealing with moderate scale RIS sizes, where the conventional DQN based on configuration-based action spaces is feasible, the performance of the latter technique is similar to the proposed learning approach.

The security of quantum key distribution (QKD) is severely threatened by discrepancies between realistic devices and theoretical assumptions. Recently, a significant framework called the reference technique was proposed to provide security against arbitrary source flaws, including pulse correlations. Here, we propose an efficient four-phase twin-field QKD using laser pulses adopting the reference technique for security against all possible source imperfections. We present a characterization of source flaws and connect them to experimental data, together with a finite-key analysis. In addition, we demonstrate the feasibility of our protocol through a proof-of-principle experimental implementation and demonstrate a secure key rate of 1.63 kbps with a 20 dB channel loss. Compared with previous QKD protocols with imperfect devices, our work considerably improves both the secure key rate and the transmission distance, and shows application potential in the practical deployment of secure QKD with device imperfections.

This paper makes the first attempt to apply newly developed upwind GFDM for the meshless solution of two-phase porous flow equations. In the presented method, node cloud is used to flexibly discretize the computational domain, instead of complicated mesh generation. Combining with moving least square approximation and local Taylor expansion, spatial derivatives of oil-phase pressure at a node are approximated by generalized difference operators in the local influence domain of the node. By introducing the first-order upwind scheme of phase relative permeability, and combining the discrete boundary conditions, fully-implicit GFDM-based nonlinear discrete equations of the immiscible two-phase porous flow are obtained and solved by the nonlinear solver based on the Newton iteration method with the automatic differentiation, to avoid the additional computational cost and possible computational instability caused by sequentially coupled scheme. Two numerical examples are implemented to test the computational performances of the presented method. Detailed error analysis finds the two sources of the calculation error, roughly studies the convergence order thus find that the low-order error of GFDM makes the convergence order of GFDM lower than that of FDM when node spacing is small, and points out the significant effect of the symmetry or uniformity of the node collocation in the node influence domain on the accuracy of generalized difference operators, and the radius of the node influence domain should be small to achieve high calculation accuracy, which is a significant difference between the studied hyperbolic two-phase porous flow problem and the elliptic problems when GFDM is applied.

We study the performance of a phase-noise impaired double reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided multiuser (MU) multiple-input single-output (MISO) system under spatial correlation at both RISs and base-station (BS). The downlink achievable rate is derived in closed-form under maximum ratio transmission (MRT) precoding. In addition, we obtain the optimal phase-shift design at both RISs in closed-form for the considered channel and phase-noise models. Numerical results validate the analytical expressions, and highlight the effects of different system parameters on the achievable rate. Our analysis shows that phase-noise can severely degrade the performance when users do not have direct links to both RISs, and can only be served via the double-reflection link. Also, we show that high spatial correlation at RISs is essential for high achievable rates.

In the storied Colonel Blotto game, two colonels allocate $a$ and $b$ troops, respectively, to $k$ distinct battlefields. A colonel wins a battle if they assign more troops to that particular battle, and each colonel seeks to maximize their total number of victories. Despite the problem's formulation in 1921, the first polynomial-time algorithm to compute Nash equilibrium (NE) strategies for this game was discovered only quite recently. In 2016, \citep{ahmadinejad_dehghani_hajiaghayi_lucier_mahini_seddighin_2019} formulated a breakthrough algorithm to compute NE strategies for the Colonel Blotto game\footnote{To the best of our knowledge, the algorithm from \citep{ahmadinejad_dehghani_hajiaghayi_lucier_mahini_seddighin_2019} has computational complexity $O(k^{14}\max\{a,b\}^{13})$}, receiving substantial media coverage (e.g. \citep{Insider}, \citep{NSF}, \citep{ScienceDaily}). In this work, we present the first known $\epsilon$-approximation algorithm to compute NE strategies in the two-player Colonel Blotto game in runtime $\widetilde{O}(\epsilon^{-4} k^8 \max\{a,b\}^2)$ for arbitrary settings of these parameters. Moreover, this algorithm computes approximate coarse correlated equilibrium strategies in the multiplayer (continuous and discrete) Colonel Blotto game (when there are $\ell > 2$ colonels) with runtime $\widetilde{O}(\ell \epsilon^{-4} k^8 n^2 + \ell^2 \epsilon^{-2} k^3 n (n+k))$, where $n$ is the maximum troop count. Before this work, no polynomial-time algorithm was known to compute exact or approximate equilibrium (in any sense) strategies for multiplayer Colonel Blotto with arbitrary parameters. Our algorithm computes these approximate equilibria by a novel (to the author's knowledge) sampling technique with which we implicitly perform multiplicative weights update over the exponentially many strategies available to each player.

Multihop relaying is a potential technique to mitigate channel impairments in optical wireless communications (OWC). In this paper, multiple fixed-gain amplify-and-forward (AF) relays are employed to enhance the OWC performance under the combined effect of atmospheric turbulence, pointing errors, and fog. We consider a long-range OWC link by modeling the atmospheric turbulence by the Fisher-Snedecor ${\cal{F}}$ distribution, pointing errors by the generalized non-zero boresight model, and random path loss due to fog. We also consider a short-range OWC system by ignoring the impact of atmospheric turbulence. We derive novel upper bounds on the probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for both short and long-range multihop OWC systems by developing exact statistical results for a single-hop OWC system under the combined effect of ${\cal{F}}$-turbulence channels, non-zero boresight pointing errors, and fog-induced fading. Based on these expressions, we present analytical expressions of outage probability (OP) and average bit-error-rate (ABER) performance for the considered OWC systems involving single-variate Fox's H and Meijer's G functions. Moreover, asymptotic expressions of the outage probability in high SNR region are developed using simpler Gamma functions to provide insights on the effect of channel and system parameters. The derived analytical expressions are validated through Monte-Carlo simulations, and the scaling of the OWC performance with the number of relay nodes is demonstrated with a comparison to the single-hop transmission.
