Automated auction design aims to find empirically high-revenue mechanisms through machine learning. Existing works on multi item auction scenarios can be roughly divided into RegretNet-like and affine maximizer auctions (AMAs) approaches. However, the former cannot strictly ensure dominant strategy incentive compatibility (DSIC), while the latter faces scalability issue due to the large number of allocation candidates. To address these limitations, we propose AMenuNet, a scalable neural network that constructs the AMA parameters (even including the allocation menu) from bidder and item representations. AMenuNet is always DSIC and individually rational (IR) due to the properties of AMAs, and it enhances scalability by generating candidate allocations through a neural network. Additionally, AMenuNet is permutation equivariant, and its number of parameters is independent of auction scale. We conduct extensive experiments to demonstrate that AMenuNet outperforms strong baselines in both contextual and non-contextual multi-item auctions, scales well to larger auctions, generalizes well to different settings, and identifies useful deterministic allocations. Overall, our proposed approach offers an effective solution to automated DSIC auction design, with improved scalability and strong revenue performance in various settings.
This paper presents a method for optimal motion planning of continuum robots by employing Bernstein surfaces to approximate the system's dynamics and impose complex constraints, including collision avoidance. The main contribution is the approximation of infinite-dimensional continuous problems into their discrete counterparts, facilitating their solution using standard optimization solvers. This discretization leverages the unique properties of Bernstein surface, providing a framework that extends previous works which focused on ODEs approximated by Bernstein polynomials. Numerical validations are conducted through several numerical scenarios. The presented methodology offers a promising direction for solving complex optimal control problems in the realm of soft robotics.
The importance of teaching software ethics to software engineering (SE) students is more critical now than ever before as software related ethical issues continue to impact society at an alarming rate. Traditional classroom methods, vignettes, role-play games, and quizzes have been employed over the years to teach SE students about software ethics. Recognising the significance of incorporating software ethics knowledge in SE education and the continued need for more efforts in the area of the teaching and learning of SE ethics, we developed an interactive, scenario-based Software Ethics Quiz. Our goal was to teach SE students about ethics in a comprehensive, open, and engaging manner through a combined approach of an online lecture followed by an interactive workshop with the quiz and a debriefing session. The anonymous quiz responses collected showed promising results regarding the engagement and efficacy of the lecture and quiz, with a slightly better rating for the interactive quiz. The voluntary student feedback collected suggested that a majority of the participants found the debrief discussion on the quiz scenarios to be very beneficial for learning about software ethics. In this experience report, we share our experiences, related educational resources including the quiz, and recommendations from lessons learned with the wider education community to keep driving this critical topic forward
Deep reinforcement learning (RL) has shown remarkable success in specific offline decision-making scenarios, yet its theoretical guarantees are still under development. Existing works on offline RL theory primarily emphasize a few trivial settings, such as linear MDP or general function approximation with strong assumptions and independent data, which lack guidance for practical use. The coupling of deep learning and Bellman residuals makes this problem challenging, in addition to the difficulty of data dependence. In this paper, we establish a non-asymptotic estimation error of pessimistic offline RL using general neural network approximation with $\mathcal{C}$-mixing data regarding the structure of networks, the dimension of datasets, and the concentrability of data coverage, under mild assumptions. Our result shows that the estimation error consists of two parts: the first converges to zero at a desired rate on the sample size with partially controllable concentrability, and the second becomes negligible if the residual constraint is tight. This result demonstrates the explicit efficiency of deep adversarial offline RL frameworks. We utilize the empirical process tool for $\mathcal{C}$-mixing sequences and the neural network approximation theory for the H\"{o}lder class to achieve this. We also develop methods to bound the Bellman estimation error caused by function approximation with empirical Bellman constraint perturbations. Additionally, we present a result that lessens the curse of dimensionality using data with low intrinsic dimensionality and function classes with low complexity. Our estimation provides valuable insights into the development of deep offline RL and guidance for algorithm model design.
This study introduces an innovative framework designed to automate tasks by interacting with UIs through a sequential, human-like problem-solving approach. Our approach initially transforms UI screenshots into natural language explanations through a vision-based UI analysis, circumventing traditional view hierarchy limitations. It then methodically engages with each interface, guiding the LLM to pinpoint and act on relevant UI elements, thus bolstering both precision and functionality. Employing the ERNIE Bot LLM, our approach has been demonstrated to surpass existing methodologies. It delivers superior UI interpretation across various datasets and exhibits remarkable efficiency in automating varied tasks on an Android smartphone, outperforming human capabilities in intricate tasks and significantly enhancing the PBD process.
Clustering has been one of the most basic and essential problems in unsupervised learning due to various applications in many critical fields. The recently proposed sum-of-nums (SON) model by Pelckmans et al. (2005), Lindsten et al. (2011) and Hocking et al. (2011) has received a lot of attention. The advantage of the SON model is the theoretical guarantee in terms of perfect recovery, established by Sun et al. (2018). It also provides great opportunities for designing efficient algorithms for solving the SON model. The semismooth Newton based augmented Lagrangian method by Sun et al. (2018) has demonstrated its superior performance over the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) and the alternating minimization algorithm (AMA). In this paper, we propose a Euclidean distance matrix model based on the SON model. An efficient majorization penalty algorithm is proposed to solve the resulting model. Extensive numerical experiments are conducted to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed model and the majorization penalty algorithm.
In supervised learning, automatically assessing the quality of the labels before any learning takes place remains an open research question. In certain particular cases, hypothesis testing procedures have been proposed to assess whether a given instance-label dataset is contaminated with class-conditional label noise, as opposed to uniform label noise. The existing theory builds on the asymptotic properties of the Maximum Likelihood Estimate for parametric logistic regression. However, the parametric assumptions on top of which these approaches are constructed are often too strong and unrealistic in practice. To alleviate this problem, in this paper we propose an alternative path by showing how similar procedures can be followed when the underlying model is a product of Local Maximum Likelihood Estimation that leads to more flexible nonparametric logistic regression models, which in turn are less susceptible to model misspecification. This different view allows for wider applicability of the tests by offering users access to a richer model class. Similarly to existing works, we assume we have access to anchor points which are provided by the users. We introduce the necessary ingredients for the adaptation of the hypothesis tests to the case of nonparametric logistic regression and empirically compare against the parametric approach presenting both synthetic and real-world case studies and discussing the advantages and limitations of the proposed approach.
One of the challenges in deploying a machine learning model is that the model's performance degrades as the operating environment changes. To maintain the performance, streaming active learning is used, in which the model is retrained by adding a newly annotated sample to the training dataset if the prediction of the sample is not certain enough. Although many streaming active learning methods have been proposed for classification, few efforts have been made for regression problems, which are often handled in the industrial field. In this paper, we propose to use the regression-via-classification framework for streaming active learning for regression. Regression-via-classification transforms regression problems into classification problems so that streaming active learning methods proposed for classification problems can be applied directly to regression problems. Experimental validation on four real data sets shows that the proposed method can perform regression with higher accuracy at the same annotation cost.
Contrastive learning models have achieved great success in unsupervised visual representation learning, which maximize the similarities between feature representations of different views of the same image, while minimize the similarities between feature representations of views of different images. In text summarization, the output summary is a shorter form of the input document and they have similar meanings. In this paper, we propose a contrastive learning model for supervised abstractive text summarization, where we view a document, its gold summary and its model generated summaries as different views of the same mean representation and maximize the similarities between them during training. We improve over a strong sequence-to-sequence text generation model (i.e., BART) on three different summarization datasets. Human evaluation also shows that our model achieves better faithfulness ratings compared to its counterpart without contrastive objectives.
Recent contrastive representation learning methods rely on estimating mutual information (MI) between multiple views of an underlying context. E.g., we can derive multiple views of a given image by applying data augmentation, or we can split a sequence into views comprising the past and future of some step in the sequence. Contrastive lower bounds on MI are easy to optimize, but have a strong underestimation bias when estimating large amounts of MI. We propose decomposing the full MI estimation problem into a sum of smaller estimation problems by splitting one of the views into progressively more informed subviews and by applying the chain rule on MI between the decomposed views. This expression contains a sum of unconditional and conditional MI terms, each measuring modest chunks of the total MI, which facilitates approximation via contrastive bounds. To maximize the sum, we formulate a contrastive lower bound on the conditional MI which can be approximated efficiently. We refer to our general approach as Decomposed Estimation of Mutual Information (DEMI). We show that DEMI can capture a larger amount of MI than standard non-decomposed contrastive bounds in a synthetic setting, and learns better representations in a vision domain and for dialogue generation.
We advocate the use of implicit fields for learning generative models of shapes and introduce an implicit field decoder for shape generation, aimed at improving the visual quality of the generated shapes. An implicit field assigns a value to each point in 3D space, so that a shape can be extracted as an iso-surface. Our implicit field decoder is trained to perform this assignment by means of a binary classifier. Specifically, it takes a point coordinate, along with a feature vector encoding a shape, and outputs a value which indicates whether the point is outside the shape or not. By replacing conventional decoders by our decoder for representation learning and generative modeling of shapes, we demonstrate superior results for tasks such as shape autoencoding, generation, interpolation, and single-view 3D reconstruction, particularly in terms of visual quality.
