Task-space quadratic programming (QP) is an elegant approach for controlling robots subject to constraints. Yet, in the case of kinematic-controlled (i.e., high-gains position or velocity) robots, closed-loop QP control scheme can be prone to instability depending on how the gains related to the tasks or the constraints are chosen. In this paper, we address such instability shortcomings. First, we highlight the non-robustness of the closed-loop system against non-modeled dynamics, such as those relative to joint-dynamics, flexibilities, external perturbations, etc. Then, we propose a robust QP control formulation based on high-level integral feedback terms in the task-space including the constraints. The proposed method is formally proved to ensure closed-loop robust stability and is intended to be applied to any kinematic-controlled robots under practical assumptions. We assess our approach through experiments on a fixed-base robot performing stable fast motions, and a floating-base humanoid robot robustly reacting to perturbations to keep its balance.

Communication efficiency is a major challenge in federated learning (FL). In client-server schemes, the server constitutes a bottleneck, and while decentralized setups spread communications, they do not necessarily reduce them due to slower convergence. We propose Multi-Token Coordinate Descent (MTCD), a communication-efficient algorithm for semi-decentralized vertical federated learning, exploiting both client-server and client-client communications when each client holds a small subset of features. Our multi-token method can be seen as a parallel Markov chain (block) coordinate descent algorithm and it subsumes the client-server and decentralized setups as special cases. We obtain a convergence rate of $\mathcal{O}(1/T)$ for nonconvex objectives when tokens roam over disjoint subsets of clients and for convex objectives when they roam over possibly overlapping subsets. Numerical results show that MTCD improves the state-of-the-art communication efficiency and allows for a tunable amount of parallel communications.

Generalized zero-shot skeleton-based action recognition (GZSSAR) is a new challenging problem in computer vision community, which requires models to recognize actions without any training samples. Previous studies only utilize the action labels of verb phrases as the semantic prototypes for learning the mapping from skeleton-based actions to a shared semantic space. However, the limited semantic information of action labels restricts the generalization ability of skeleton features for recognizing unseen actions. In order to solve this dilemma, we propose a multi-semantic fusion (MSF) model for improving the performance of GZSSAR, where two kinds of class-level textual descriptions (i.e., action descriptions and motion descriptions), are collected as auxiliary semantic information to enhance the learning efficacy of generalizable skeleton features. Specially, a pre-trained language encoder takes the action descriptions, motion descriptions and original class labels as inputs to obtain rich semantic features for each action class, while a skeleton encoder is implemented to extract skeleton features. Then, a variational autoencoder (VAE) based generative module is performed to learn a cross-modal alignment between skeleton and semantic features. Finally, a classification module is built to recognize the action categories of input samples, where a seen-unseen classification gate is adopted to predict whether the sample comes from seen action classes or not in GZSSAR. The superior performance in comparisons with previous models validates the effectiveness of the proposed MSF model on GZSSAR.

Grasping occluded objects in cluttered environments is an essential component in complex robotic manipulation tasks. In this paper, we introduce an AffordanCE-driven Next-Best-View planning policy (ACE-NBV) that tries to find a feasible grasp for target object via continuously observing scenes from new viewpoints. This policy is motivated by the observation that the grasp affordances of an occluded object can be better-measured under the view when the view-direction are the same as the grasp view. Specifically, our method leverages the paradigm of novel view imagery to predict the grasps affordances under previously unobserved view, and select next observation view based on the gain of the highest imagined grasp quality of the target object. The experimental results in simulation and on the real robot demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed affordance-driven next-best-view planning policy. Tiny, causal models are crucial for embedded audio machine learning applications. Model compression can be achieved via distilling knowledge from a large teacher into a smaller student model. In this work, we propose a novel two-step approach for tiny speech enhancement model distillation. In contrast to the standard approach of a weighted mixture of distillation and supervised losses, we firstly pre-train the student using only the knowledge distillation (KD) objective, after which we switch to a fully supervised training regime. We also propose a novel fine-grained similarity-preserving KD loss, which aims to match the student's intra-activation Gram matrices to that of the teacher. Our method demonstrates broad improvements, but particularly shines in adverse conditions including high compression and low signal to noise ratios (SNR), yielding signal to distortion ratio gains of 0.9 dB and 1.1 dB, respectively, at -5 dB input SNR and 63x compression compared to baseline.

Grasping objects by a specific part is often crucial for safety and for executing downstream tasks. Yet, learning-based grasp planners lack this behavior unless they are trained on specific object part data, making it a significant challenge to scale object diversity. Instead, we propose LERF-TOGO, Language Embedded Radiance Fields for Task-Oriented Grasping of Objects, which uses vision-language models zero-shot to output a grasp distribution over an object given a natural language query. To accomplish this, we first reconstruct a LERF of the scene, which distills CLIP embeddings into a multi-scale 3D language field queryable with text. However, LERF has no sense of objectness, meaning its relevancy outputs often return incomplete activations over an object which are insufficient for subsequent part queries. LERF-TOGO mitigates this lack of spatial grouping by extracting a 3D object mask via DINO features and then conditionally querying LERF on this mask to obtain a semantic distribution over the object with which to rank grasps from an off-the-shelf grasp planner. We evaluate LERF-TOGO's ability to grasp task-oriented object parts on 31 different physical objects, and find it selects grasps on the correct part in 81% of all trials and grasps successfully in 69%. This paper investigates a challenging problem of zero-shot learning in the multi-label scenario (MLZSL), wherein, the model is trained to recognize multiple unseen classes within a sample (e.g., an image) based on seen classes and auxiliary knowledge, e.g., semantic information. Existing methods usually resort to analyzing the relationship of various seen classes residing in a sample from the dimension of spatial or semantic characteristics, and transfer the learned model to unseen ones. But they ignore the effective integration of local and global features. That is, in the process of inferring unseen classes, global features represent the principal direction of the image in the feature space, while local features should maintain uniqueness within a certain range. This integrated neglect will make the model lose its grasp of the main components of the image. Relying only on the local existence of seen classes during the inference stage introduces unavoidable bias. In this paper, we propose a novel and effective group bi-enhancement framework for MLZSL, dubbed GBE-MLZSL, to fully make use of such properties and enable a more accurate and robust visual-semantic projection. Specifically, we split the feature maps into several feature groups, of which each feature group can be trained independently with the Local Information Distinguishing Module (LID) to ensure uniqueness. Meanwhile, a Global Enhancement Module (GEM) is designed to preserve the principal direction. Besides, a static graph structure is designed to construct the correlation of local features. Experiments on large-scale MLZSL benchmark datasets NUS-WIDE and Open-Images-v4 demonstrate that the proposed GBE-MLZSL outperforms other state-of-the-art methods with large margins.

In typical in-hand manipulation tasks represented by object pivoting, the real-time perception of rotational slippage has been proven beneficial for improving the dexterity and stability of robotic hands. An effective strategy is to obtain the contact properties for measuring rotation angle through visuotactile sensing. However, existing methods for rotation estimation did not consider the impact of the incipient slip during the pivoting process, which introduces measurement errors and makes it hard to determine the boundary between stable contact and macro slip. This paper describes a generalized 2-d contact model under pivoting, and proposes a rotation measurement method based on the line-features in the stick region. The proposed method was applied to the Tac3D vision-based tactile sensors using continuous marker patterns. Experiments show that the rotation measurement system could achieve an average static measurement error of 0.17 degree and an average dynamic measurement error of 1.34 degree. Besides, the proposed method requires no training data and can achieve real-time sensing during the in-hand object pivoting.

RGB-T saliency detection has emerged as an important computer vision task, identifying conspicuous objects in challenging scenes such as dark environments. However, existing methods neglect the characteristics of cross-modal features and rely solely on network structures to fuse RGB and thermal features. To address this, we first propose a Multi-Modal Hybrid loss (MMHL) that comprises supervised and self-supervised loss functions. The supervised loss component of MMHL distinctly utilizes semantic features from different modalities, while the self-supervised loss component reduces the distance between RGB and thermal features. We further consider both spatial and channel information during feature fusion and propose the Hybrid Fusion Module to effectively fuse RGB and thermal features. Lastly, instead of jointly training the network with cross-modal features, we implement a sequential training strategy which performs training only on RGB images in the first stage and then learns cross-modal features in the second stage. This training strategy improves saliency detection performance without computational overhead. Results from performance evaluation and ablation studies demonstrate the superior performance achieved by the proposed method compared with the existing state-of-the-art methods.

Federated Learning (FL) is a decentralized machine-learning paradigm, in which a global server iteratively averages the model parameters of local users without accessing their data. User heterogeneity has imposed significant challenges to FL, which can incur drifted global models that are slow to converge. Knowledge Distillation has recently emerged to tackle this issue, by refining the server model using aggregated knowledge from heterogeneous users, other than directly averaging their model parameters. This approach, however, depends on a proxy dataset, making it impractical unless such a prerequisite is satisfied. Moreover, the ensemble knowledge is not fully utilized to guide local model learning, which may in turn affect the quality of the aggregated model. Inspired by the prior art, we propose a data-free knowledge distillation} approach to address heterogeneous FL, where the server learns a lightweight generator to ensemble user information in a data-free manner, which is then broadcasted to users, regulating local training using the learned knowledge as an inductive bias. Empirical studies powered by theoretical implications show that, our approach facilitates FL with better generalization performance using fewer communication rounds, compared with the state-of-the-art.

Few-shot Knowledge Graph (KG) completion is a focus of current research, where each task aims at querying unseen facts of a relation given its few-shot reference entity pairs. Recent attempts solve this problem by learning static representations of entities and references, ignoring their dynamic properties, i.e., entities may exhibit diverse roles within task relations, and references may make different contributions to queries. This work proposes an adaptive attentional network for few-shot KG completion by learning adaptive entity and reference representations. Specifically, entities are modeled by an adaptive neighbor encoder to discern their task-oriented roles, while references are modeled by an adaptive query-aware aggregator to differentiate their contributions. Through the attention mechanism, both entities and references can capture their fine-grained semantic meanings, and thus render more expressive representations. This will be more predictive for knowledge acquisition in the few-shot scenario. Evaluation in link prediction on two public datasets shows that our approach achieves new state-of-the-art results with different few-shot sizes.
