A safe and efficient decision-making system is crucial for autonomous vehicles. However, the complexity of driving environments limits the effectiveness of many rule-based and machine learning approaches. Reinforcement Learning (RL), with its robust self-learning capabilities and environmental adaptability, offers a promising solution to these challenges. Nevertheless, safety and efficiency concerns during training hinder its widespread application. To address these concerns, we propose a novel RL framework, Simple to Complex Collaborative Decision (S2CD). First, we rapidly train the teacher model in a lightweight simulation environment. In the more complex and realistic environment, teacher intervenes when the student agent exhibits suboptimal behavior by assessing actions' value to avert dangers. We also introduce an RL algorithm called Adaptive Clipping Proximal Policy Optimization Plus, which combines samples from both teacher and student policies and employs dynamic clipping strategies based on sample importance. This approach improves sample efficiency while effectively alleviating data imbalance. Additionally, we employ the Kullback-Leibler divergence as a policy constraint, transforming it into an unconstrained problem with the Lagrangian method to accelerate the student's learning. Finally, a gradual weaning strategy ensures that the student learns to explore independently over time, overcoming the teacher's limitations and maximizing performance. Simulation experiments in highway lane-change scenarios show that the S2CD framework enhances learning efficiency, reduces training costs, and significantly improves safety compared to state-of-the-art algorithms. This framework also ensures effective knowledge transfer between teacher and student models, even with suboptimal teachers, the student achieves superior performance, demonstrating the robustness and effectiveness of S2CD.

Improving diesel engine efficiency and emission reduction have been critical research topics. Recent government regulations have shifted this focus to another important area related to engine health and performance monitoring. Although the advancements in the use of deep learning methods for system monitoring have shown promising results in this direction, designing efficient methods suitable for field systems remains an open research challenge. The objective of this study is to develop a computationally efficient neural network-based approach for identifying unknown parameters of a mean value diesel engine model to facilitate physics-based health monitoring and maintenance forecasting. We propose a hybrid method combining physics informed neural networks, PINNs, and a deep neural operator, DeepONet to predict unknown parameters and gas flow dynamics in a diesel engine. The operator network predicts independent actuator dynamics learnt through offline training, thereby reducing the PINNs online computational cost. To address PINNs need for retraining with changing input scenarios, we propose two transfer learning (TL) strategies. The first strategy involves multi-stage transfer learning for parameter identification. While this method is computationally efficient as compared to online PINN training, improvements are required to meet field requirements. The second TL strategy focuses solely on training the output weights and biases of a subset of multi-head networks pretrained on a larger dataset, substantially reducing computation time during online prediction. We also evaluate our model for epistemic and aleatoric uncertainty by incorporating dropout in pretrained networks and Gaussian noise in the training dataset. This strategy offers a tailored, computationally inexpensive, and physics-based approach for parameter identification in diesel engine sub systems.

In a context where the Brazilian judiciary system, the largest in the world, faces a crisis due to the slow processing of millions of cases, it becomes imperative to develop efficient methods for analyzing legal texts. We introduce uBERT, a hybrid model that combines Transformer and Recurrent Neural Network architectures to effectively handle long legal texts. Our approach processes the full text regardless of its length while maintaining reasonable computational overhead. Our experiments demonstrate that uBERT achieves superior performance compared to BERT+LSTM when overlapping input is used and is significantly faster than ULMFiT for processing long legal documents.

Confidence calibration of classification models is a technique to estimate the true posterior probability of the predicted class, which is critical for ensuring reliable decision-making in practical applications. Existing confidence calibration methods mostly use statistical techniques to estimate the calibration curve from data or fit a user-defined calibration function, but often overlook fully mining and utilizing the prior distribution behind the calibration curve. However, a well-informed prior distribution can provide valuable insights beyond the empirical data under the limited data or low-density regions of confidence scores. To fill this gap, this paper proposes a new method that integrates the prior distribution behind the calibration curve with empirical data to estimate a continuous calibration curve, which is realized by modeling the sampling process of calibration data as a binomial process and maximizing the likelihood function of the binomial process. We prove that the calibration curve estimating method is Lipschitz continuous with respect to data distribution and requires a sample size of $3/B$ of that required for histogram binning, where $B$ represents the number of bins. Also, a new calibration metric ($TCE_{bpm}$), which leverages the estimated calibration curve to estimate the true calibration error (TCE), is designed. $TCE_{bpm}$ is proven to be a consistent calibration measure. Furthermore, realistic calibration datasets can be generated by the binomial process modeling from a preset true calibration curve and confidence score distribution, which can serve as a benchmark to measure and compare the discrepancy between existing calibration metrics and the true calibration error. The effectiveness of our calibration method and metric are verified in real-world and simulated data.

An accurate and timely assessment of wind speed and energy output allows an efficient planning and management of this resource on the power grid. Wind energy, especially at high resolution, calls for the development of nonlinear statistical models able to capture complex dependencies in space and time. This work introduces a Convolutional Echo State AutoencodeR (CESAR), a spatio-temporal, neural network-based model which first extracts the spatial features with a deep convolutional autoencoder, and then models their dynamics with an echo state network. We also propose a two-step approach to also allow for computationally affordable inference, while also performing uncertainty quantification. We focus on a high-resolution simulation in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), an area where wind farm planning is currently ongoing, and show how CESAR is able to provide improved forecasting of wind speed and power for proposed building sites by up to 17% against the best alternative methods.

This work proposes a hybrid model- and data-based scheme for fault detection, isolation, and estimation (FDIE) for a class of wafer handler (WH) robots. The proposed hybrid scheme consists of: 1) a linear filter that simultaneously estimates system states and fault-induced signals from sensing and actuation data; and 2) a data-driven classifier, in the form of a support vector machine (SVM), that detects and isolates the fault type using estimates generated by the filter. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the scheme for two critical fault types for WH robots used in the semiconductor industry: broken-belt in the lower arm of the WH robot (an abrupt fault) and tilt in the robot arms (an incipient fault). We derive explicit models of the robot motion dynamics induced by these faults and test the diagnostics scheme in a realistic simulation-based case study. These case study results demonstrate that the proposed hybrid FDIE scheme achieves superior performance compared to purely data-driven methods.

The potential of Wi-Fi backscatter communications systems is immense, yet challenges such as signal instability and energy constraints impose performance limits. This paper introduces FlexScatter, a Wi-Fi backscatter system using a designed scheduling strategy based on excitation prediction and rateless coding to enhance system performance. Initially, a Wi-Fi traffic prediction model is constructed by analyzing the variability of the excitation source. Then, an adaptive transmission scheduling algorithm is proposed to address the low energy consumption demands of backscatter tags, adjusting the transmission strategy according to predictive analytics and taming channel conditions. Furthermore, leveraging the benefits of low-density parity-check (LDPC) and fountain codes, a novel coding and decoding algorithm is developed, which is tailored for dynamic channel conditions. Experimental validation shows that FlexScatter reduces bit error rates (BER) by up to 30%, improves energy efficiency by 7%, and increases overall system utility by 11%, compared to conventional methods. FlexScatter's ability to balance energy consumption and communication efficiency makes it a robust solution for future IoT applications that rely on unpredictable Wi-Fi traffic.

In the burgeoning field of medical imaging, precise computation of 3D volume holds a significant importance for subsequent qualitative analysis of 3D reconstructed objects. Combining multivariate calculus, marching cube algorithm, and binary indexed tree data structure, we developed an algorithm for efficient computation of intrinsic volume of any volumetric data recovered from computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance (MR). We proposed the 30 configurations of volume values based on the polygonal mesh generation method. Our algorithm processes the data in scan-line order simultaneously with reconstruction algorithm to create a Fenwick tree, ensuring query time much faster and assisting users' edition of slicing or transforming model. We tested the algorithm's accuracy on simple 3D objects (e.g., sphere, cylinder) to complicated structures (e.g., lungs, cardiac chambers). The result deviated within $\pm 0.004 \text{cm}^3$ and there is still room for further improvement.

Face recognition technology has advanced significantly in recent years due largely to the availability of large and increasingly complex training datasets for use in deep learning models. These datasets, however, typically comprise images scraped from news sites or social media platforms and, therefore, have limited utility in more advanced security, forensics, and military applications. These applications require lower resolution, longer ranges, and elevated viewpoints. To meet these critical needs, we collected and curated the first and second subsets of a large multi-modal biometric dataset designed for use in the research and development (R&D) of biometric recognition technologies under extremely challenging conditions. Thus far, the dataset includes more than 350,000 still images and over 1,300 hours of video footage of approximately 1,000 subjects. To collect this data, we used Nikon DSLR cameras, a variety of commercial surveillance cameras, specialized long-rage R&D cameras, and Group 1 and Group 2 UAV platforms. The goal is to support the development of algorithms capable of accurately recognizing people at ranges up to 1,000 m and from high angles of elevation. These advances will include improvements to the state of the art in face recognition and will support new research in the area of whole-body recognition using methods based on gait and anthropometry. This paper describes methods used to collect and curate the dataset, and the dataset's characteristics at the current stage.

Detecting carried objects is one of the requirements for developing systems to reason about activities involving people and objects. We present an approach to detect carried objects from a single video frame with a novel method that incorporates features from multiple scales. Initially, a foreground mask in a video frame is segmented into multi-scale superpixels. Then the human-like regions in the segmented area are identified by matching a set of extracted features from superpixels against learned features in a codebook. A carried object probability map is generated using the complement of the matching probabilities of superpixels to human-like regions and background information. A group of superpixels with high carried object probability and strong edge support is then merged to obtain the shape of the carried object. We applied our method to two challenging datasets, and results show that our method is competitive with or better than the state-of-the-art.
