Local Differential Privacy (LDP) is now widely adopted in large-scale systems to collect and analyze sensitive data while preserving users' privacy. However, almost all LDP protocols rely on a semi-trust model where users are curious-but-honest, which rarely holds in real-world scenarios. Recent works show poor estimation accuracy of many LDP protocols under malicious threat models. Although a few works have proposed some countermeasures to address these attacks, they all require prior knowledge of either the attacking pattern or the poison value distribution, which is impractical as they can be easily evaded by the attackers. In this paper, we adopt a general opportunistic-and-colluding threat model and propose a multi-group Differential Aggregation Protocol (DAP) to improve the accuracy of mean estimation under LDP. Different from all existing works that detect poison values on individual basis, DAP mitigates the overall impact of poison values on the estimated mean. It relies on a new probing mechanism EMF (i.e., Expectation-Maximization Filter) to estimate features of the attackers. In addition to EMF, DAP also consists of two EMF post-processing procedures (EMF* and CEMF*), and a group-wise mean aggregation scheme to optimize the final estimated mean to achieve the smallest variance. Extensive experimental results on both synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate the superior performance of DAP over state-of-the-art solutions.

Recently, researchers have successfully employed Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) to build enhanced recommender systems due to their capability to learn patterns from the interaction between involved entities. In addition, previous studies have investigated federated learning as the main solution to enable a native privacy-preserving mechanism for the construction of global GNN models without collecting sensitive data into a single computation unit. Still, privacy issues may arise as the analysis of local model updates produced by the federated clients can return information related to sensitive local data. For this reason, experts proposed solutions that combine federated learning with Differential Privacy strategies and community-driven approaches, which involve combining data from neighbor clients to make the individual local updates less dependent on local sensitive data. In this paper, we identify a crucial security flaw in such a configuration, and we design an attack capable of deceiving state-of-the-art defenses for federated learning. The proposed attack includes two operating modes, the first one focusing on convergence inhibition (Adversarial Mode), and the second one aiming at building a deceptive rating injection on the global federated model (Backdoor Mode). The experimental results show the effectiveness of our attack in both its modes, returning on average 60% performance detriment in all the tests on Adversarial Mode and fully effective backdoors in 93% of cases for the tests performed on Backdoor Mode.

Secure aggregation is commonly used in federated learning (FL) to alleviate privacy concerns related to the central aggregator seeing all parameter updates in the clear. Unfortunately, most existing secure aggregation schemes ignore two critical orthogonal research directions that aim to (i) significantly reduce client-server communication and (ii) mitigate the impact of malicious clients. However, both of these additional properties are essential to facilitate cross-device FL with thousands or even millions of (mobile) participants. In this paper, we unite both research directions by introducing ScionFL, the first secure aggregation framework for FL that operates efficiently on quantized inputs and simultaneously provides robustness against malicious clients. Our framework leverages (novel) multi-party computation (MPC) techniques and supports multiple linear (1-bit) quantization schemes, including ones that utilize the randomized Hadamard transform and Kashin's representation. Our theoretical results are supported by extensive evaluations. We show that with no overhead for clients and moderate overhead on the server side compared to transferring and processing quantized updates in plaintext, we obtain comparable accuracy for standard FL benchmarks. Additionally, we demonstrate the robustness of our framework against state-of-the-art poisoning attacks.

Large language models (LLMs) have had a profound impact on numerous aspects of daily life including natural language processing, content generation, research methodologies and so on. However, one crucial issue concerning the inference results of large language models is security and privacy. In many scenarios, the results generated by LLMs could possibly leak many confidential or copyright information. A recent beautiful and breakthrough work [Vyas, Kakade and Barak 2023] focus on such privacy issue of the LLMs from theoretical perspective. It is well-known that computing the attention matrix is one of the major task during the LLMs computation. Thus, how to give a provable privately guarantees of computing the attention matrix is an important research direction. Previous work [Alman and Song 2023, Brand, Song and Zhou 2023] have proposed provable tight result for fast computation of attention without considering privacy concerns. One natural mathematical formulation to quantity the privacy in theoretical computer science graduate school textbook is differential privacy. Inspired by [Vyas, Kakade and Barak 2023], in this work, we provide a provable result for showing how to differentially private approximate the attention matrix. From technique perspective, our result replies on a pioneering work in the area of differential privacy by [Alabi, Kothari, Tankala, Venkat and Zhang 2022].

Deep graph learning (DGL) has achieved remarkable progress in both business and scientific areas ranging from finance and e-commerce to drug and advanced material discovery. Despite the progress, applying DGL to real-world applications faces a series of reliability threats including inherent noise, distribution shift, and adversarial attacks. This survey aims to provide a comprehensive review of recent advances for improving the reliability of DGL algorithms against the above threats. In contrast to prior related surveys which mainly focus on adversarial attacks and defense, our survey covers more reliability-related aspects of DGL, i.e., inherent noise and distribution shift. Additionally, we discuss the relationships among above aspects and highlight some important issues to be explored in future research.

This paper considers the phenomenon where a single probe to a target generates multiple, sometimes numerous, packets in response -- which we term "blowback". Understanding blowback is important because attackers can leverage it to launch amplified denial of service attacks by redirecting blowback towards a victim. Blowback also has serious implications for Internet researchers since their experimental setups must cope with bursts of blowback traffic. We find that tens of thousands, and in some protocols, hundreds of thousands, of hosts generate blowback, with orders of magnitude amplification on average. In fact, some prolific blowback generators produce millions of response packets in the aftermath of a single probe. We also find that blowback generators are fairly stable over periods of weeks, so once identified, many of these hosts can be exploited by attackers for a long time.

Many real-world systems modeled using differential equations involve unknown or uncertain parameters. Standard approaches to address parameter estimation inverse problems in this setting typically focus on estimating constants; yet some unobservable system parameters may vary with time without known evolution models. In this work, we propose a novel approximation method inspired by the Fourier series to estimate time-varying parameters in deterministic dynamical systems modeled with ordinary differential equations. Using ensemble Kalman filtering in conjunction with Fourier series-based approximation models, we detail two possible implementation schemes for sequentially updating the time-varying parameter estimates given noisy observations of the system states. We demonstrate the capabilities of the proposed approach in estimating periodic parameters, both when the period is known and unknown, as well as non-periodic time-varying parameters of different forms with several computed examples using a forced harmonic oscillator. Results emphasize the importance of the frequencies and number of approximation model terms on the time-varying parameter estimates and corresponding dynamical system predictions.

This paper is the first to attempt differentially private (DP) topological data analysis (TDA), producing near-optimal private persistence diagrams. We analyze the sensitivity of persistence diagrams in terms of the bottleneck distance, and we show that the commonly used \v{C}ech complex has sensitivity that does not decrease as the sample size $n$ increases. This makes it challenging for the persistence diagrams of \v{C}ech complexes to be privatized. As an alternative, we show that the persistence diagram obtained by the $L^1$-distance to measure (DTM) has sensitivity $O(1/n)$. Based on the sensitivity analysis, we propose using the exponential mechanism whose utility function is defined in terms of the bottleneck distance of the $L^1$-DTM persistence diagrams. We also derive upper and lower bounds of the accuracy of our privacy mechanism; the obtained bounds indicate that the privacy error of our mechanism is near-optimal. We demonstrate the performance of our privatized persistence diagrams through simulations as well as on a real dataset tracking human movement.

The rationale of this work is based on the current user trust discourse of Artificial Intelligence (AI). We aim to produce novel HCI approaches that use trust as a facilitator for the uptake (or appropriation) of current technologies. We propose a framework (HCTFrame) to guide non-experts to unlock the full potential of user trust in AI design. Results derived from a data triangulation of findings from three literature reviews demystify some misconceptions of user trust in computer science and AI discourse, and three case studies are conducted to assess the effectiveness of a psychometric scale in mapping potential users' trust breakdowns and concerns. This work primarily contributes to the fight against the tendency to design technical-centered vulnerable interactions, which can eventually lead to additional real and perceived breaches of trust. The proposed framework can be used to guide system designers on how to map and define user trust and the socioethical and organisational needs and characteristics of AI system design. It can also guide AI system designers on how to develop a prototype and operationalise a solution that meets user trust requirements. The article ends by providing some user research tools that can be employed to measure users' trust intentions and behaviours towards a proposed solution.

We explore the features of two methods of stabilization, aggregation and supremizer methods, for reduced-order modeling of parametrized optimal control problems. In both methods, the reduced basis spaces are augmented to guarantee stability. For the aggregation method, the reduced basis approximation spaces for the state and adjoint variables are augmented in such a way that the spaces are identical. For the supremizer method, the reduced basis approximation space for the state-control product space is augmented with the solutions of a supremizer equation. We implement both of these methods for solving several parametrized control problems and assess their performance. Results indicate that the number of reduced basis vectors needed to approximate the solution space to some tolerance with the supremizer method is much larger, possibly double, that for aggregation. There are also some cases where the supremizer method fails to produce a converged solution. We present results to compare the accuracy, efficiency, and computational costs associated with both methods of stabilization which suggest that stabilization by aggregation is a superior stabilization method for control problems.

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have been shown to be effective models for different predictive tasks on graph-structured data. Recent work on their expressive power has focused on isomorphism tasks and countable feature spaces. We extend this theoretical framework to include continuous features - which occur regularly in real-world input domains and within the hidden layers of GNNs - and we demonstrate the requirement for multiple aggregation functions in this context. Accordingly, we propose Principal Neighbourhood Aggregation (PNA), a novel architecture combining multiple aggregators with degree-scalers (which generalize the sum aggregator). Finally, we compare the capacity of different models to capture and exploit the graph structure via a novel benchmark containing multiple tasks taken from classical graph theory, alongside existing benchmarks from real-world domains, all of which demonstrate the strength of our model. With this work, we hope to steer some of the GNN research towards new aggregation methods which we believe are essential in the search for powerful and robust models.
