We present the design of a framework to automatically generate a large range of different exercise tasks on Haskell-I/O programming. Automatic task generation is useful in many different ways. Manual task creating is a time consuming process, so automating it saves valuable time for the educator. Together with an automated assessment system automatic task generation allows students to practice with as many exercise tasks as needed. Additionally, each student can be given a slightly different version of a task, reducing issues regarding plagiarism that arise naturally in an e-learning environment. Our task generation is centered around a specification language for I/O behavior that we developed in an earlier work. The task generation framework, an EDSL in Haskell, provides powerful primitives for the creation of various artifacts, including program code, from specifications. We will not go into detail on the technical realization of these primitives. This article instead showcases how such artifacts and the framework as a whole can be used to build exercise tasks templates that can then be (randomly) instantiated.

Many real-world dynamical systems can be described as State-Space Models (SSMs). In this formulation, each observation is emitted by a latent state, which follows first-order Markovian dynamics. A Probabilistic Deep SSM (ProDSSM) generalizes this framework to dynamical systems of unknown parametric form, where the transition and emission models are described by neural networks with uncertain weights. In this work, we propose the first deterministic inference algorithm for models of this type. Our framework allows efficient approximations for training and testing. We demonstrate in our experiments that our new method can be employed for a variety of tasks and enjoys a superior balance between predictive performance and computational budget.

This paper presents an innovative methodology for improving the robustness and computational efficiency of Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs), a critical component in neuromorphic computing. The proposed approach integrates astrocytes, a type of glial cell prevalent in the human brain, into SNNs, creating astrocyte-augmented networks. To achieve this, we designed and implemented an astrocyte model in two distinct platforms: CPU/GPU and FPGA. Our FPGA implementation notably utilizes Dynamic Function Exchange (DFX) technology, enabling real-time hardware reconfiguration and adaptive model creation based on current operating conditions. The novel approach of leveraging astrocytes significantly improves the fault tolerance of SNNs, thereby enhancing their robustness. Notably, our astrocyte-augmented SNN displays near-zero latency and theoretically infinite throughput, implying exceptional computational efficiency. Through comprehensive comparative analysis with prior works, it's established that our model surpasses others in terms of neuron and synapse count while maintaining an efficient power consumption profile. These results underscore the potential of our methodology in shaping the future of neuromorphic computing, by providing robust and energy-efficient systems.

Grasping objects by a specific part is often crucial for safety and for executing downstream tasks. Yet, learning-based grasp planners lack this behavior unless they are trained on specific object part data, making it a significant challenge to scale object diversity. Instead, we propose LERF-TOGO, Language Embedded Radiance Fields for Task-Oriented Grasping of Objects, which uses vision-language models zero-shot to output a grasp distribution over an object given a natural language query. To accomplish this, we first reconstruct a LERF of the scene, which distills CLIP embeddings into a multi-scale 3D language field queryable with text. However, LERF has no sense of objectness, meaning its relevancy outputs often return incomplete activations over an object which are insufficient for subsequent part queries. LERF-TOGO mitigates this lack of spatial grouping by extracting a 3D object mask via DINO features and then conditionally querying LERF on this mask to obtain a semantic distribution over the object with which to rank grasps from an off-the-shelf grasp planner. We evaluate LERF-TOGO's ability to grasp task-oriented object parts on 31 different physical objects, and find it selects grasps on the correct part in 81% of all trials and grasps successfully in 69%. Grasping inhomogeneous objects in real-world applications remains a challenging task due to the unknown physical properties such as mass distribution and coefficient of friction. In this study, we propose a meta-learning algorithm called ConDex, which incorporates Conditional Neural Processes (CNP) with DexNet-2.0 to autonomously discern the underlying physical properties of objects using depth images. ConDex efficiently acquires physical embeddings from limited trials, enabling precise grasping point estimation. Furthermore, ConDex is capable of updating the predicted grasping quality iteratively from new trials in an online fashion. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first who generate two object datasets focusing on inhomogeneous physical properties with varying mass distributions and friction coefficients. Extensive evaluations in simulation demonstrate ConDex's superior performance over DexNet-2.0 and existing meta-learning-based grasping pipelines. Furthermore, ConDex shows robust generalization to previously unseen real-world objects despite training solely in the simulation. The synthetic and real-world datasets will be published as well.

Despite the promising progress in multi-modal tasks, current large multi-modal models (LMM) are prone to hallucinating inconsistent descriptions with respect to the associated image and human instructions. This paper addresses this issue by introducing the first large and diverse visual instruction tuning dataset, named Large-scale Robust Visual (LRV)-Instruction. Our dataset consists of 120k visual instructions generated by GPT4, covering 16 vision-and-language tasks with open-ended instructions and answers. Unlike existing studies that primarily focus on positive instruction samples, we design LRV-Instruction to include both positive and negative instructions for more robust visual instruction tuning. Our negative instructions are designed at two semantic levels: (i) Nonexistent Element Manipulation and (ii) Existent Element Manipulation. To efficiently measure the hallucination generated by LMMs, we propose GPT4-Assisted Visual Instruction Evaluation (GAVIE), a novel approach to evaluate visual instruction tuning without the need for human-annotated groundtruth answers and can adapt to diverse instruction formats. We conduct comprehensive experiments to investigate the hallucination of LMMs. Our results demonstrate that existing LMMs exhibit significant hallucination when presented with our negative instructions, particularly with Existent Element Manipulation instructions. Moreover, by finetuning MiniGPT4 on LRV-Instruction, we successfully mitigate hallucination while improving performance on public datasets using less training data compared to state-of-the-art methods. Additionally, we observed that a balanced ratio of positive and negative instances in the training data leads to a more robust model. Neural implicit modeling permits to achieve impressive 3D reconstruction results on small objects, while it exhibits significant limitations in large indoor scenes. In this work, we propose a novel neural implicit modeling method that leverages multiple regularization strategies to achieve better reconstructions of large indoor environments, while relying only on images. A sparse but accurate depth prior is used to anchor the scene to the initial model. A dense but less accurate depth prior is also introduced, flexible enough to still let the model diverge from it to improve the estimated geometry. Then, a novel self-supervised strategy to regularize the estimated surface normals is presented. Finally, a learnable exposure compensation scheme permits to cope with challenging lighting conditions. Experimental results show that our approach produces state-of-the-art 3D reconstructions in challenging indoor scenarios.

Processing sensitive data and deploying well-designed Intellectual Property (IP) cores on remote Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) are prone to private data leakage and IP theft. One effective solution is constructing Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) on FPGA-SoCs (FPGA System on Chips). Researchers have integrated this type TEE with Trusted Platform Module (TPM)-based trusted boot, denoted as FPGA-SoC tbTEE. But there is no effort on secure and trusted runtime customization of FPGA-SoC TEE. This paper extends FPGA-SoC tbTEE to build Runtime Customizable TEE (RCTEE) on FPGA-SoC by additive three major components (our work): 1) CrloadIP, which can load an IP core at runtime such that RCTEE can be adjusted dynamically and securely; 2) CexecIP, which can not only execute an IP core without modifying the operating system of FPGA-SoC TEE, but also prevent insider attacks from executing IPs deployed in RCTEE; 3) CremoAT, which can provide the newly measured RCTEE state and establish a secure and trusted communication path between remote verifiers and RCTEE. We conduct a security analysis of RCTEE and its performance evaluation on Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+ XCZU15EG 2FFVB1156 MPSoC.

Federated Learning (FL) is a decentralized machine-learning paradigm, in which a global server iteratively averages the model parameters of local users without accessing their data. User heterogeneity has imposed significant challenges to FL, which can incur drifted global models that are slow to converge. Knowledge Distillation has recently emerged to tackle this issue, by refining the server model using aggregated knowledge from heterogeneous users, other than directly averaging their model parameters. This approach, however, depends on a proxy dataset, making it impractical unless such a prerequisite is satisfied. Moreover, the ensemble knowledge is not fully utilized to guide local model learning, which may in turn affect the quality of the aggregated model. Inspired by the prior art, we propose a data-free knowledge distillation} approach to address heterogeneous FL, where the server learns a lightweight generator to ensemble user information in a data-free manner, which is then broadcasted to users, regulating local training using the learned knowledge as an inductive bias. Empirical studies powered by theoretical implications show that, our approach facilitates FL with better generalization performance using fewer communication rounds, compared with the state-of-the-art.

Few-shot Knowledge Graph (KG) completion is a focus of current research, where each task aims at querying unseen facts of a relation given its few-shot reference entity pairs. Recent attempts solve this problem by learning static representations of entities and references, ignoring their dynamic properties, i.e., entities may exhibit diverse roles within task relations, and references may make different contributions to queries. This work proposes an adaptive attentional network for few-shot KG completion by learning adaptive entity and reference representations. Specifically, entities are modeled by an adaptive neighbor encoder to discern their task-oriented roles, while references are modeled by an adaptive query-aware aggregator to differentiate their contributions. Through the attention mechanism, both entities and references can capture their fine-grained semantic meanings, and thus render more expressive representations. This will be more predictive for knowledge acquisition in the few-shot scenario. Evaluation in link prediction on two public datasets shows that our approach achieves new state-of-the-art results with different few-shot sizes.

Multi-relation Question Answering is a challenging task, due to the requirement of elaborated analysis on questions and reasoning over multiple fact triples in knowledge base. In this paper, we present a novel model called Interpretable Reasoning Network that employs an interpretable, hop-by-hop reasoning process for question answering. The model dynamically decides which part of an input question should be analyzed at each hop; predicts a relation that corresponds to the current parsed results; utilizes the predicted relation to update the question representation and the state of the reasoning process; and then drives the next-hop reasoning. Experiments show that our model yields state-of-the-art results on two datasets. More interestingly, the model can offer traceable and observable intermediate predictions for reasoning analysis and failure diagnosis, thereby allowing manual manipulation in predicting the final answer.
