Large-scale antenna arrays employed by the base station (BS) constitute an essential next-generation communications technique. However, due to the constraints of size, cost, and power consumption, it is usually considered unrealistic to use a large-scale antenna array at the user side. Inspired by the emerging technique of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), we firstly propose the concept of user-side RIS (US-RIS) for facilitating the employment of a large-scale antenna array at the user side in a cost- and energy-efficient way. In contrast to the existing employments of RIS, which belong to the family of base-station-side RISs (BSS-RISs), the US-RIS concept by definition facilitates the employment of RIS at the user side for the first time. This is achieved by conceiving a multi-layer structure to realize a compact form-factor. Furthermore, our theoretical results demonstrate that, in contrast to the existing single-layer structure, where only the phase of the signal reflected from RIS can be adjusted, the amplitude of the signal penetrating multi-layer US-RIS can also be partially controlled, which brings about a new degree of freedom (DoF) for beamformer design that can be beneficially exploited for performance enhancement. In addition, based on the proposed multi-layer US-RIS, we formulate the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) maximization problem of US-RIS-aided communications. Due to the non-convexity of the problem introduced by this multi-layer structure, we propose a multi-layer transmit beamformer design relying on an iterative algorithm for finding the optimal solution by alternately updating each variable. Finally, our simulation results verify the superiority of the proposed multi-layer US-RIS as a compact realization of a large-scale antenna array at the user side for uplink transmission.

Recent studies have shown that introducing communication between agents can significantly improve overall performance in cooperative Multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL). In many real-world scenarios, communication can be expensive and the bandwidth of the multi-agent system is subject to certain constraints. Redundant messages who occupy the communication resources can block the transmission of informative messages and thus jeopardize the performance. In this paper, we aim to learn the minimal sufficient communication messages. First, we initiate the communication between agents by a complete graph. Then we introduce the graph information bottleneck (GIB) principle into this complete graph and derive the optimization over graph structures. Based on the optimization, a novel multi-agent communication module, called CommGIB, is proposed, which effectively compresses the structure information and node information in the communication graph to deal with bandwidth-constrained settings. Extensive experiments in Traffic Control and StanCraft II are conducted. The results indicate that the proposed methods can achieve better performance in bandwidth-restricted settings compared with state-of-the-art algorithms, with especially large margins in large-scale multi-agent tasks.

This paper investigates the information theoretical limit of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) aided communication scenario in which the RIS and the transmitter either jointly or independently send information to the receiver. The RIS is an emerging technology that uses a large number of passive reflective elements with adjustable phases to intelligently reflect the transmit signal to the intended receiver. While most previous studies of the RIS focus on its ability to beamform and to boost the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), this paper shows that if the information data stream is also available at the RIS and can be modulated through the adjustable phases at the RIS, significant improvement in the {degree-of-freedom} (DoF) of the overall channel is possible. For example, for an RIS system in which the signals are reflected from a transmitter with $M$ antennas to a receiver with $K$ antennas through an RIS with $N$ reflective elements, assuming no direct path between the transmitter and the receiver, joint transmission of the transmitter and the RIS can achieve a DoF of $\min(M+\frac{N}{2}-\frac{1}{2},N,K)$ as compared to the DoF of $\min(M,K)$ for the conventional multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel. This result is obtained by establishing a connection between the RIS system and the MIMO channel with phase noises and by using results for characterizing the information dimension under projection. The result is further extended to the case with a direct path between the transmitter and the receiver, and also to the multiple access scenario, in which the transmitter and the RIS send independent information. Finally, this paper proposes a symbol-level precoding approach for modulating data through the phases of the RIS, and provides numerical simulation results to verify the theoretical DoF results.

Speech emotion recognition (SER) processes speech signals to detect and characterize expressed perceived emotions. Many SER application systems often acquire and transmit speech data collected at the client-side to remote cloud platforms for inference and decision making. However, speech data carry rich information not only about emotions conveyed in vocal expressions, but also other sensitive demographic traits such as gender, age and language background. Consequently, it is desirable for SER systems to have the ability to classify emotion constructs while preventing unintended/improper inferences of sensitive and demographic information. Federated learning (FL) is a distributed machine learning paradigm that coordinates clients to train a model collaboratively without sharing their local data. This training approach appears secure and can improve privacy for SER. However, recent works have demonstrated that FL approaches are still vulnerable to various privacy attacks like reconstruction attacks and membership inference attacks. Although most of these have focused on computer vision applications, such information leakages exist in the SER systems trained using the FL technique. To assess the information leakage of SER systems trained using FL, we propose an attribute inference attack framework that infers sensitive attribute information of the clients from shared gradients or model parameters, corresponding to the FedSGD and the FedAvg training algorithms, respectively. As a use case, we empirically evaluate our approach for predicting the client's gender information using three SER benchmark datasets: IEMOCAP, CREMA-D, and MSP-Improv. We show that the attribute inference attack is achievable for SER systems trained using FL. We further identify that most information leakage possibly comes from the first layer in the SER model.

The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has arose an upsurging research interest recently due to its promising outlook in 5G-and-beyond wireless networks. With the assistance of RIS, the wireless propagation environment is no longer static and could be customized to support diverse service requirements. In this paper, we will approach the rate maximization problems in RIS-aided wireless networks by considering the beamforming and reflecting design jointly. Three representative design problems from different system settings are investigated based on a proposed unified algorithmic framework via the block minorization-maximization (BMM) method. Extensions and generalizations of the proposed framework in dealing with some other related problems are further presented. Merits of the proposed algorithms are demonstrated through numerical simulations in comparison with the state-of-the-art methods.

This paper investigates the interference nulling capability of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) in a multiuser environment where multiple single-antenna transceivers communicate simultaneously in a shared spectrum. From a theoretical perspective, we show that when the channels between the RIS and the transceivers have line-of-sight and the direct paths are blocked, it is possible to adjust the phases of the RIS elements to null out all the interference completely and to achieve the maximum $K$ degrees-of-freedom (DoF) in the overall $K$-user interference channel, provided that the number of RIS elements exceeds some finite value that depends on $K$. Algorithmically, for any fixed channel realization we formulate the interference nulling problem as a feasibility problem, and propose an alternating projection algorithm to efficiently solve the resulting nonconvex problem with local convergence guarantee. Numerical results show that the proposed alternating projection algorithm can null all the interference if the number of RIS elements is only slightly larger than a threshold of $2K(K-1)$. For the practical sum-rate maximization objective, this paper proposes to use the zero-forcing solution obtained from alternating projection as an initial point for subsequent Riemannian conjugate gradient optimization, and shows that it has a significant performance advantage over random initializations. For the objective of maximizing the minimum rate, this paper proposes a subgradient projection method which is capable of achieving good performance at low complexity.

In this paper, we derive asymptotic expressions for the ergodic capacity of the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) keyhole channel at low SNR in independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) Nakagami-$m$ fading conditions with perfect channel state information available at both the transmitter (CSI-T) and the receiver (CSI-R). We show that the low-SNR capacity of this keyhole channel scales proportionally as $\frac{\mathrm{SNR}}{4} \log^2 \left(1/{\mathrm{SNR}}\right)$. With this asymptotic low-SNR capacity formula, we find a very surprising result that contrary to popular belief, the capacity of the MIMO fading channel at low SNR increases in the presence of keyhole degenerate condition. Additionally, we show that a simple one-bit CSI-T based On-Off power scheme achieves this low-SNR capacity; surprisingly, it is robust against both moderate and severe fading conditions for a wide range of low SNR values. These results also extend to the Rayleigh keyhole MIMO channel as a special case.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is an excellent use case for line-of-sight (LOS) based technologies such as free-space optical (FSO) communications. In this paper, we analyze the performance of RIS-empowered FSO (RISE-FSO) systems by unifying Fisher-Snedecor (F), Gamma-Gamma (GG), and Malaga (M) distributions for atmospheric turbulence with zero-boresight pointing errors over deterministic as well as random path-loss in foggy conditions with heterodyne detection (HD) and intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD) methods. By deriving the probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the direct-link (DL) with the statistical effect of atmospheric turbulence, pointing errors, and random fog, we develop exact expressions of PDF and CDF of the resultant channel for the RISE-FSO system. Using the derived statistical results, we present exact expressions of outage probability, average bit-error-rate (BER), ergodic capacity, and moments of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for both DL-FSO and RISE-FSO systems. We also develop an asymptotic analysis of the outage probability and average BER and derive the diversity order of the considered systems. We validate the analytical expressions using Monte-Carlo simulations and demonstrate the performance scaling of the FSO system with the number of RIS elements for various turbulence channels, detection techniques, and weather conditions.

Edge intelligence refers to a set of connected systems and devices for data collection, caching, processing, and analysis in locations close to where data is captured based on artificial intelligence. The aim of edge intelligence is to enhance the quality and speed of data processing and protect the privacy and security of the data. Although recently emerged, spanning the period from 2011 to now, this field of research has shown explosive growth over the past five years. In this paper, we present a thorough and comprehensive survey on the literature surrounding edge intelligence. We first identify four fundamental components of edge intelligence, namely edge caching, edge training, edge inference, and edge offloading, based on theoretical and practical results pertaining to proposed and deployed systems. We then aim for a systematic classification of the state of the solutions by examining research results and observations for each of the four components and present a taxonomy that includes practical problems, adopted techniques, and application goals. For each category, we elaborate, compare and analyse the literature from the perspectives of adopted techniques, objectives, performance, advantages and drawbacks, etc. This survey article provides a comprehensive introduction to edge intelligence and its application areas. In addition, we summarise the development of the emerging research field and the current state-of-the-art and discuss the important open issues and possible theoretical and technical solutions.

Cognitive diagnosis is a fundamental issue in intelligent education, which aims to discover the proficiency level of students on specific knowledge concepts. Existing approaches usually mine linear interactions of student exercising process by manual-designed function (e.g., logistic function), which is not sufficient for capturing complex relations between students and exercises. In this paper, we propose a general Neural Cognitive Diagnosis (NeuralCD) framework, which incorporates neural networks to learn the complex exercising interactions, for getting both accurate and interpretable diagnosis results. Specifically, we project students and exercises to factor vectors and leverage multi neural layers for modeling their interactions, where the monotonicity assumption is applied to ensure the interpretability of both factors. Furthermore, we propose two implementations of NeuralCD by specializing the required concepts of each exercise, i.e., the NeuralCDM with traditional Q-matrix and the improved NeuralCDM+ exploring the rich text content. Extensive experimental results on real-world datasets show the effectiveness of NeuralCD framework with both accuracy and interpretability.

Privacy is a major good for users of personalized services such as recommender systems. When applied to the field of health informatics, privacy concerns of users may be amplified, but the possible utility of such services is also high. Despite availability of technologies such as k-anonymity, differential privacy, privacy-aware recommendation, and personalized privacy trade-offs, little research has been conducted on the users' willingness to share health data for usage in such systems. In two conjoint-decision studies (sample size n=521), we investigate importance and utility of privacy-preserving techniques related to sharing of personal health data for k-anonymity and differential privacy. Users were asked to pick a preferred sharing scenario depending on the recipient of the data, the benefit of sharing data, the type of data, and the parameterized privacy. Users disagreed with sharing data for commercial purposes regarding mental illnesses and with high de-anonymization risks but showed little concern when data is used for scientific purposes and is related to physical illnesses. Suggestions for health recommender system development are derived from the findings.
