Vertical Federated Learning (VFL) has gained increasing attention as a novel training paradigm that integrates sample alignment and feature union. However, existing VFL methods face challenges when dealing with heterogeneous local models among participants, which affects optimization convergence and generalization. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel approach called Vertical Federated learning for training Multi-parties Heterogeneous models (VFedMH). VFedMH focuses on aggregating the embeddings of each participant's knowledge instead of intermediate results during forward propagation. The active party, who possesses labels and features of the sample, in VFedMH securely aggregates local embeddings to obtain global knowledge embeddings, and sends them to passive parties. The passive parties, who own only features of the sample, then utilize the global embeddings to propagate forward on their local heterogeneous networks. However, the passive party does not own the labels, so the local model gradient cannot be calculated locally. To overcome this limitation, the active party assists the passive party in computing its local heterogeneous model gradients. Then, each participant trains their local model using the heterogeneous model gradients. The objective is to minimize the loss value of their respective local heterogeneous models. Additionally, the paper provides a theoretical analysis of VFedMH's convergence performance. Extensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate that VFedMH can simultaneously train multiple heterogeneous models with heterogeneous optimization and outperform some recent methods in model performance.
We present LaMPilot, a novel framework for planning in the field of autonomous driving, rethinking the task as a code-generation process that leverages established behavioral primitives. This approach aims to address the challenge of interpreting and executing spontaneous user instructions such as "overtake the car ahead," which have typically posed difficulties for existing frameworks. We introduce the LaMPilot benchmark specifically designed to quantitatively evaluate the efficacy of Large Language Models (LLMs) in translating human directives into actionable driving policies. We then evaluate a wide range of state-of-the-art code generation language models on tasks from the LaMPilot Benchmark. The results of the experiments showed that GPT-4, with human feedback, achieved an impressive task completion rate of 92.7% and a minimal collision rate of 0.9%. To encourage further investigation in this area, our code and dataset will be made available.
Rate-Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA) has emerged as a novel multiple access technique that enlarges the achievable rate region of Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) broadcast channels with linear precoding. In this work, we jointly address three practical but fundamental questions: (1) How to exploit the benefit of RSMA under finite constellations? (2) What are the potential and promising ways to implement RSMA receivers? (3) Can RSMA still retain its superiority in the absence of successive interference cancellers (SIC)? To address these concerns, we first propose low-complexity precoder designs taking finite constellations into account and show that the potential of RSMA is better achieved with such designs than those assuming Gaussian signalling. We then consider some practical receiver designs that can be applied to RSMA. We notice that these receiver designs follow one of two principles: (1) SIC: cancelling upper layer signals before decoding the lower layer and (2) non-SIC: treating upper layer signals as noise when decoding the lower layer. In light of this, we propose to alter the precoder design according to the receiver category. Through link-level simulations, the effectiveness of the proposed precoder and receiver designs are verified. More importantly, we show that it is possible to preserve the superiority of RSMA over Spatial Domain Multiple Access (SDMA), including SDMA with advanced receivers, even without SIC at the receivers. Those results therefore open the door to competitive implementable RSMA strategies for 6G and beyond communications.
Current state-of-the-art image generation models such as Latent Diffusion Models (LDMs) have demonstrated the capacity to produce visually striking food-related images. However, these generated images often exhibit an artistic or surreal quality that diverges from the authenticity of real-world food representations. This inadequacy renders them impractical for applications requiring realistic food imagery, such as training models for image-based dietary assessment. To address these limitations, we introduce FoodFusion, a Latent Diffusion model engineered specifically for the faithful synthesis of realistic food images from textual descriptions. The development of the FoodFusion model involves harnessing an extensive array of open-source food datasets, resulting in over 300,000 curated image-caption pairs. Additionally, we propose and employ two distinct data cleaning methodologies to ensure that the resulting image-text pairs maintain both realism and accuracy. The FoodFusion model, thus trained, demonstrates a remarkable ability to generate food images that exhibit a significant improvement in terms of both realism and diversity over the publicly available image generation models. Multimodal Large Language Model (MLLM) relies on the powerful LLM to perform multimodal tasks, showing amazing emergent abilities in recent studies, such as writing poems based on an image. However, it is difficult for these case studies to fully reflect the performance of MLLM, lacking a comprehensive evaluation. In this paper, we fill in this blank, presenting the first comprehensive MLLM Evaluation benchmark MME. It measures both perception and cognition abilities on a total of 14 subtasks. In order to avoid data leakage that may arise from direct use of public datasets for evaluation, the annotations of instruction-answer pairs are all manually designed. The concise instruction design allows us to fairly compare MLLMs, instead of struggling in prompt engineering. Besides, with such an instruction, we can also easily carry out quantitative statistics. A total of 30 advanced MLLMs are comprehensively evaluated on our MME, which not only suggests that existing MLLMs still have a large room for improvement, but also reveals the potential directions for the subsequent model optimization.
In this paper, we introduce a novel algorithm - the Skill-Driven Skill Recombination Algorithm (SDSRA) - an innovative framework that significantly enhances the efficiency of achieving maximum entropy in reinforcement learning tasks. We find that SDSRA achieves faster convergence compared to the traditional Soft Actor-Critic (SAC) algorithm and produces improved policies. By integrating skill-based strategies within the robust Actor-Critic framework, SDSRA demonstrates remarkable adaptability and performance across a wide array of complex and diverse benchmarks.
Natural Language to SQL systems (NL-to-SQL) have recently shown a significant increase in accuracy for natural language to SQL query translation. This improvement is due to the emergence of transformer-based language models, and the popularity of the Spider benchmark - the de-facto standard for evaluating NL-to-SQL systems. The top NL-to-SQL systems reach accuracies of up to 85\%. However, Spider mainly contains simple databases with few tables, columns, and entries, which does not reflect a realistic setting. Moreover, complex real-world databases with domain-specific content have little to no training data available in the form of NL/SQL-pairs leading to poor performance of existing NL-to-SQL systems. In this paper, we introduce ScienceBenchmark, a new complex NL-to-SQL benchmark for three real-world, highly domain-specific databases. For this new benchmark, SQL experts and domain experts created high-quality NL/SQL-pairs for each domain. To garner more data, we extended the small amount of human-generated data with synthetic data generated using GPT-3. We show that our benchmark is highly challenging, as the top performing systems on Spider achieve a very low performance on our benchmark. Thus, the challenge is many-fold: creating NL-to-SQL systems for highly complex domains with a small amount of hand-made training data augmented with synthetic data. To our knowledge, ScienceBenchmark is the first NL-to-SQL benchmark designed with complex real-world scientific databases, containing challenging training and test data carefully validated by domain experts.
We present FIMO, an innovative dataset comprising formal mathematical problem statements sourced from the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) Shortlisted Problems. Designed to facilitate advanced automated theorem proving at the IMO level, FIMO is currently tailored for the Lean formal language. It comprises 149 formal problem statements, accompanied by both informal problem descriptions and their corresponding LaTeX-based informal proofs. Through initial experiments involving GPT-4, our findings underscore the existing limitations in current methodologies, indicating a substantial journey ahead before achieving satisfactory IMO-level automated theorem proving outcomes.
Emotion Recognition in Conversations (ERC) is a critical aspect of affective computing, and it has many practical applications in healthcare, education, chatbots, and social media platforms. Earlier approaches for ERC analysis involved modeling both speaker and long-term contextual information using graph neural network architectures. However, it is ideal to deploy speaker-independent models for real-world applications. Additionally, long context windows can potentially create confusion in recognizing the emotion of an utterance in a conversation. To overcome these limitations, we propose novel line conversation graph convolutional network (LineConGCN) and graph attention (LineConGAT) models for ERC analysis. These models are speaker-independent and built using a graph construction strategy for conversations -- line conversation graphs (LineConGraphs). The conversational context in LineConGraphs is short-term -- limited to one previous and future utterance, and speaker information is not part of the graph. We evaluate the performance of our proposed models on two benchmark datasets, IEMOCAP and MELD, and show that our LineConGAT model outperforms the state-of-the-art methods with an F1-score of 64.58% and 76.50%. Moreover, we demonstrate that embedding sentiment shift information into line conversation graphs further enhances the ERC performance in the case of GCN models.
We propose FlashAvatar, a novel and lightweight 3D animatable avatar representation that could reconstruct a digital avatar from a short monocular video sequence in minutes and render high-fidelity photo-realistic images at 300FPS on a consumer-grade GPU. To achieve this, we maintain a uniform 3D Gaussian field embedded in the surface of a parametric face model and learn extra spatial offset to model non-surface regions and subtle facial details. While full use of geometric priors can capture high-frequency facial details and preserve exaggerated expressions, proper initialization can help reduce the number of Gaussians, thus enabling super-fast rendering speed. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that FlashAvatar outperforms existing works regarding visual quality and personalized details and is almost an order of magnitude faster in rendering speed. Diffusion Handles is a novel approach to enabling 3D object edits on diffusion images. We accomplish these edits using existing pre-trained diffusion models, and 2D image depth estimation, without any fine-tuning or 3D object retrieval. The edited results remain plausible, photo-real, and preserve object identity. Diffusion Handles address a critically missing facet of generative image based creative design, and significantly advance the state-of-the-art in generative image editing. Our key insight is to lift diffusion activations for an object to 3D using a proxy depth, 3D-transform the depth and associated activations, and project them back to image space. The diffusion process applied to the manipulated activations with identity control, produces plausible edited images showing complex 3D occlusion and lighting effects. We evaluate Diffusion Handles: quantitatively, on a large synthetic data benchmark; and qualitatively by a user study, showing our output to be more plausible, and better than prior art at both, 3D editing and identity control.
