Fluid-structure interaction models are used to study how a material interacts with different fluids at different Reynolds numbers. Examining the same model not only for different fluids but also for different solids allows to optimize the choice of materials for construction even better. A possible answer to this demand is parameter-dependent discretization. Furthermore, low-rank techniques can reduce the complexity needed to compute approximations to parameter-dependent fluid-structure interaction discretizations. Low-rank methods have been applied to parameter-dependent linear fluid-structure interaction discretizations. The linearity of the operators involved allows to translate the resulting equations to a single matrix equation. The solution is approximated by a low-rank method. In this paper, we propose a new method that extends this framework to nonlinear parameter-dependent fluid-structure interaction problems by means of the Newton iteration. The parameter set is split into disjoint subsets. On each subset, the Newton approximation of the problem related to the upper median parameter is computed and serves as initial guess for one Newton step on the whole subset. This Newton step yields a matrix equation whose solution can be approximated by a low-rank method. The resulting method requires a smaller number of Newton steps if compared with a direct approach that applies the Newton iteration to the separate problems consecutively. In the experiments considered, the proposed method allows to compute a low-rank approximation up to twenty times faster than by the direct approach.
Exploiting pre-trained diffusion models for restoration has recently become a favored alternative to the traditional task-specific training approach. Previous works have achieved noteworthy success by limiting the solution space using explicit degradation models. However, these methods often fall short when faced with complex degradations as they generally cannot be precisely modeled. In this paper, we propose PGDiff by introducing partial guidance, a fresh perspective that is more adaptable to real-world degradations compared to existing works. Rather than specifically defining the degradation process, our approach models the desired properties, such as image structure and color statistics of high-quality images, and applies this guidance during the reverse diffusion process. These properties are readily available and make no assumptions about the degradation process. When combined with a diffusion prior, this partial guidance can deliver appealing results across a range of restoration tasks. Additionally, PGDiff can be extended to handle composite tasks by consolidating multiple high-quality image properties, achieved by integrating the guidance from respective tasks. Experimental results demonstrate that our method not only outperforms existing diffusion-prior-based approaches but also competes favorably with task-specific models.
Classical gradient-based density topology optimization is adapted for method-of-moments numerical modeling to design a conductor-based system attaining the minimal antenna Q-factor evaluated via an energy stored operator. Standard topology optimization features are discussed, e.g., the interpolation scheme and density and projection filtering. The performance of the proposed technique is demonstrated in a few examples in terms of the realized Q-factor values and necessary computational time to obtain a design. The optimized designs are compared to the fundamental bound and well-known empirical structures. The presented framework can provide a completely novel design, as presented in the second example.
Diffusion models have shown promising results in speech enhancement, using a task-adapted diffusion process for the conditional generation of clean speech given a noisy mixture. However, at test time, the neural network used for score estimation is called multiple times to solve the iterative reverse process. This results in a slow inference process and causes discretization errors that accumulate over the sampling trajectory. In this paper, we address these limitations through a two-stage training approach. In the first stage, we train the diffusion model the usual way using the generative denoising score matching loss. In the second stage, we compute the enhanced signal by solving the reverse process and compare the resulting estimate to the clean speech target using a predictive loss. We show that using this second training stage enables achieving the same performance as the baseline model using only 5 function evaluations instead of 60 function evaluations. While the performance of usual generative diffusion algorithms drops dramatically when lowering the number of function evaluations (NFEs) to obtain single-step diffusion, we show that our proposed method keeps a steady performance and therefore largely outperforms the diffusion baseline in this setting and also generalizes better than its predictive counterpart.
3D object-level mapping is a fundamental problem in robotics, which is especially challenging when object CAD models are unavailable during inference. In this work, we propose a framework that can reconstruct high-quality object-level maps for unknown objects. Our approach takes multiple RGB-D images as input and outputs dense 3D shapes and 9-DoF poses (including 3 scale parameters) for detected objects. The core idea of our approach is to leverage a learnt generative model for shape categories as a prior and to formulate a probabilistic, uncertainty-aware optimization framework for 3D reconstruction. We derive a probabilistic formulation that propagates shape and pose uncertainty through two novel loss functions. Unlike current state-of-the-art approaches, we explicitly model the uncertainty of the object shapes and poses during our optimization, resulting in a high-quality object-level mapping system. Moreover, the resulting shape and pose uncertainties, which we demonstrate can accurately reflect the true errors of our object maps, can also be useful for downstream robotics tasks such as active vision. We perform extensive evaluations on indoor and outdoor real-world datasets, achieving achieves substantial improvements over state-of-the-art methods. Language models (LMs) have already demonstrated remarkable abilities in understanding and generating both natural and formal language. Despite these advances, their integration with real-world environments such as large-scale knowledge bases (KBs) remains an underdeveloped area, affecting applications such as semantic parsing and indulging in "hallucinated" information. This paper is an experimental investigation aimed at uncovering the robustness challenges that LMs encounter when tasked with knowledge base question answering (KBQA). The investigation covers scenarios with inconsistent data distribution between training and inference, such as generalization to unseen domains, adaptation to various language variations, and transferability across different datasets. Our comprehensive experiments reveal that even when employed with our proposed data augmentation techniques, advanced small and large language models exhibit poor performance in various dimensions. While the LM is a promising technology, the robustness of the current form in dealing with complex environments is fragile and of limited practicality because of the data distribution issue. This calls for future research on data collection and LM learning paradims.
The parallel alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithms have gained popularity in statistics and machine learning for their efficient handling of large sample data problems. However, the parallel structure of these algorithms is based on the consensus problem, which can lead to an excessive number of auxiliary variables for high-dimensional data. In this paper, we propose a partition-insensitive parallel framework based on the linearized ADMM (LADMM) algorithm and apply it to solve nonconvex penalized smooth quantile regression problems. Compared to existing parallel ADMM algorithms, our algorithm does not rely on the consensus problem, resulting in a significant reduction in the number of variables that need to be updated at each iteration. It is worth noting that the solution of our algorithm remains unchanged regardless of how the total sample is divided, which is also known as partition-insensitivity. Furthermore, under some mild assumptions, we prove that the iterative sequence generated by the parallel LADMM algorithm converges to a critical point of the nonconvex optimization problem. Numerical experiments on synthetic and real datasets demonstrate the feasibility and validity of the proposed algorithm.
We consider a decentralized formulation of the active hypothesis testing (AHT) problem, where multiple agents gather noisy observations from the environment with the purpose of identifying the correct hypothesis. At each time step, agents have the option to select a sampling action. These different actions result in observations drawn from various distributions, each associated with a specific hypothesis. The agents collaborate to accomplish the task, where message exchanges between agents are allowed over a rate-limited communications channel. The objective is to devise a multi-agent policy that minimizes the Bayes risk. This risk comprises both the cost of sampling and the joint terminal cost incurred by the agents upon making a hypothesis declaration. Deriving optimal structured policies for AHT problems is generally mathematically intractable, even in the context of a single agent. As a result, recent efforts have turned to deep learning methodologies to address these problems, which have exhibited significant success in single-agent learning scenarios. In this paper, we tackle the multi-agent AHT formulation by introducing a novel algorithm rooted in the framework of deep multi-agent reinforcement learning. This algorithm, named Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning for AHT (MARLA), operates at each time step by having each agent map its state to an action (sampling rule or stopping rule) using a trained deep neural network with the goal of minimizing the Bayes risk. We present a comprehensive set of experimental results that effectively showcase the agents' ability to learn collaborative strategies and enhance performance using MARLA. Furthermore, we demonstrate the superiority of MARLA over single-agent learning approaches. Finally, we provide an open-source implementation of the MARLA framework, for the benefit of researchers and developers in related domains.
Conventional entity typing approaches are based on independent classification paradigms, which make them difficult to recognize inter-dependent, long-tailed and fine-grained entity types. In this paper, we argue that the implicitly entailed extrinsic and intrinsic dependencies between labels can provide critical knowledge to tackle the above challenges. To this end, we propose \emph{Label Reasoning Network(LRN)}, which sequentially reasons fine-grained entity labels by discovering and exploiting label dependencies knowledge entailed in the data. Specifically, LRN utilizes an auto-regressive network to conduct deductive reasoning and a bipartite attribute graph to conduct inductive reasoning between labels, which can effectively model, learn and reason complex label dependencies in a sequence-to-set, end-to-end manner. Experiments show that LRN achieves the state-of-the-art performance on standard ultra fine-grained entity typing benchmarks, and can also resolve the long tail label problem effectively.
We advocate the use of implicit fields for learning generative models of shapes and introduce an implicit field decoder for shape generation, aimed at improving the visual quality of the generated shapes. An implicit field assigns a value to each point in 3D space, so that a shape can be extracted as an iso-surface. Our implicit field decoder is trained to perform this assignment by means of a binary classifier. Specifically, it takes a point coordinate, along with a feature vector encoding a shape, and outputs a value which indicates whether the point is outside the shape or not. By replacing conventional decoders by our decoder for representation learning and generative modeling of shapes, we demonstrate superior results for tasks such as shape autoencoding, generation, interpolation, and single-view 3D reconstruction, particularly in terms of visual quality.
We introduce a generic framework that reduces the computational cost of object detection while retaining accuracy for scenarios where objects with varied sizes appear in high resolution images. Detection progresses in a coarse-to-fine manner, first on a down-sampled version of the image and then on a sequence of higher resolution regions identified as likely to improve the detection accuracy. Built upon reinforcement learning, our approach consists of a model (R-net) that uses coarse detection results to predict the potential accuracy gain for analyzing a region at a higher resolution and another model (Q-net) that sequentially selects regions to zoom in. Experiments on the Caltech Pedestrians dataset show that our approach reduces the number of processed pixels by over 50% without a drop in detection accuracy. The merits of our approach become more significant on a high resolution test set collected from YFCC100M dataset, where our approach maintains high detection performance while reducing the number of processed pixels by about 70% and the detection time by over 50%.
