Public discourse on critical issues such as climate change is progressively shifting to social media platforms that prioritize short-form video content. To improve our understanding of this transition, we studied the video content produced by 21 prominent YouTube creators who have expanded their influence to TikTok as information disseminators. Using dictionary-based tools and BERT-based embeddings, we analyzed the transcripts of nearly 7k climate-related videos across both platforms and the 574k comments they received. We found that, when using TikTok, creators use a more emotionally resonant, self-referential, and action-oriented language compared to YouTube. We also observed a strong semantic alignment between videos and comments, with creators who excel at diversifying their TikTok content from YouTube typically receiving responses that more closely align with their produced content. This suggests that tailored communication strategies hold greater promise in directing public discussion towards desired topics, which bears implications for the design of effective climate communication campaigns.
The labor market is changing rapidly, prompting increased interest in the automatic extraction of occupational skills from text. With the advent of English benchmark job description datasets, there is a need for systems that handle their diversity well. We tackle the complexity in occupational skill datasets tasks -- combining and leveraging multiple datasets for skill extraction, to identify rarely observed skills within a dataset, and overcoming the scarcity of skills across datasets. In particular, we investigate the retrieval-augmentation of language models, employing an external datastore for retrieving similar skills in a dataset-unifying manner. Our proposed method, \textbf{N}earest \textbf{N}eighbor \textbf{O}ccupational \textbf{S}kill \textbf{E}xtraction (NNOSE) effectively leverages multiple datasets by retrieving neighboring skills from other datasets in the datastore. This improves skill extraction \emph{without} additional fine-tuning. Crucially, we observe a performance gain in predicting infrequent patterns, with substantial gains of up to 30\% span-F1 in cross-dataset settings.
Acquiring new knowledge without forgetting what has been learned in a sequence of tasks is the central focus of continual learning (CL). While tasks arrive sequentially, the training data are often prepared and annotated independently, leading to the CL of incoming supervised learning tasks. This paper considers the under-explored problem of active continual learning (ACL) for a sequence of active learning (AL) tasks, where each incoming task includes a pool of unlabelled data and an annotation budget. We investigate the effectiveness and interplay between several AL and CL algorithms in the domain, class and task-incremental scenarios. Our experiments reveal the trade-off between two contrasting goals of not forgetting the old knowledge and the ability to quickly learn new knowledge in CL and AL, respectively. While conditioning the AL query strategy on the annotations collected for the previous tasks leads to improved task performance on the domain and task incremental learning, our proposed forgetting-learning profile suggests a gap in balancing the effect of AL and CL for the class-incremental scenario.
In an era where biometric security serves as a keystone of modern identity verification systems, ensuring the authenticity of these biometric samples is paramount. Liveness detection, the capability to differentiate between genuine and spoofed biometric samples, stands at the forefront of this challenge. This research presents a comprehensive evaluation of liveness detection models, with a particular focus on their performance in cross-database scenarios, a test paradigm notorious for its complexity and real-world relevance. Our study commenced by meticulously assessing models on individual datasets, revealing the nuances in their performance metrics. Delving into metrics such as the Half Total Error Rate, False Acceptance Rate, and False Rejection Rate, we unearthed invaluable insights into the models' strengths and weaknesses. Crucially, our exploration of cross-database testing provided a unique perspective, highlighting the chasm between training on one dataset and deploying on another. Comparative analysis with extant methodologies, ranging from convolutional networks to more intricate strategies, enriched our understanding of the current landscape. The variance in performance, even among state-of-the-art models, underscored the inherent challenges in this domain. In essence, this paper serves as both a repository of findings and a clarion call for more nuanced, data-diverse, and adaptable approaches in biometric liveness detection. In the dynamic dance between authenticity and deception, our work offers a blueprint for navigating the evolving rhythms of biometric security.
Programming can be challenging for novices, and it is difficult to provide high-quality, comprehensive, and timely support at scale. Generative AI and its products, like ChatGPT, can create a solution for most introductory programming problems. However, students may become overly reliant on these tools for quick code generation and homework completion, which might cause reduced engagement and limited learning. In this work, we present CodeTailor, a system that leverages large language models (LLMs) while still encouraging students' cognitive engagement. CodeTailor provides a personalized Parsons puzzle to support struggling students. In a Parsons puzzle, students place mixed-up code blocks in the correct order to solve it. A technical evaluation with 800 incorrect student code demonstrated that CodeTailor can efficiently create high-quality (correct, personalized, and concise) Parsons puzzles for students. In a within-subjects experiment with 18 novice programmers, students rated using CodeTailor as more engaging, and they recalled more newly acquired elements from the supported practice in the posttest after using CodeTailor, compared to when they simply received an AI-generated solution. In addition, most students preferred to use CodeTailor over receiving an AI-generated solution to support learning. Qualitative observations and interviews also provided evidence for the benefits of CodeTailor, including emphasizing thinking about solution construction, fostering continuity in learning, promoting reflection, and boosting student confidence. We conclude by suggesting future design ideas for applying generative AI to facilitate active learning opportunities and minimize over-reliance.
Children typically learn to identify and express emotions through sharing their stories and feelings with others, particularly their family. However, it is challenging for parents or siblings to have emotional communication with children since children are still developing their communication skills. We present ChaCha, a chatbot that encourages and guides children to share personal events and associated emotions. ChaCha combines a state machine and large language models (LLMs) to keep the dialogue on track while carrying on free-form conversations. Through an exploratory study with 20 children (aged 8-12), we examine how ChaCha prompts children to share personal events and guides them to describe associated emotions. Participants perceived ChaCha as a close friend and shared their stories on various topics, such as family trips and personal achievements. Based on the findings, we discuss opportunities for leveraging LLMs to design child-friendly chatbots to support children in sharing emotions.
In social sciences, studies are often based on questionnaires asking participants to express ordered responses several times over a study period. We present a model-based clustering algorithm for such longitudinal ordinal data. Assuming that an ordinal variable is the discretization of a underlying latent continuous variable, the model relies on a mixture of matrix-variate normal distributions, accounting simultaneously for within- and between-time dependence structures. The model is thus able to concurrently model the heterogeneity, the association among the responses and the temporal dependence structure. An EM algorithm is developed and presented for parameters estimation. An evaluation of the model through synthetic data shows its estimation abilities and its advantages when compared to competitors. A real-world application concerning changes in eating behaviours during the Covid-19 pandemic period in France will be presented.
Narrative visualization effectively transforms data into engaging stories, making complex information accessible to a broad audience. Large models, essential for narrative visualization, inherently facilitate this process through their superior ability to handle natural language queries and answers, generate cohesive narratives, and enhance visual communication. Inspired by previous work in narrative visualization and recent advances in large models, we synthesized potential tasks and opportunities for large models at various stages of narrative visualization. In our study, we surveyed 79 papers to explore the role of large models in automating narrative visualization creation. We propose a comprehensive pipeline that leverages large models for crafting narrative visualization, categorizing the reviewed literature into four essential phases: Data, Narration, Visualization, and Presentation. Additionally, we identify nine specific tasks where large models are applied across these stages. This study maps out the landscape of challenges and opportunities in the LM4NV process, providing insightful directions for future research and valuable guidance for scholars in the field.
Reasoning is a fundamental aspect of human intelligence that plays a crucial role in activities such as problem solving, decision making, and critical thinking. In recent years, large language models (LLMs) have made significant progress in natural language processing, and there is observation that these models may exhibit reasoning abilities when they are sufficiently large. However, it is not yet clear to what extent LLMs are capable of reasoning. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge on reasoning in LLMs, including techniques for improving and eliciting reasoning in these models, methods and benchmarks for evaluating reasoning abilities, findings and implications of previous research in this field, and suggestions on future directions. Our aim is to provide a detailed and up-to-date review of this topic and stimulate meaningful discussion and future work.
Entity linking (EL) for the rapidly growing short text (e.g. search queries and news titles) is critical to industrial applications. Most existing approaches relying on adequate context for long text EL are not effective for the concise and sparse short text. In this paper, we propose a novel framework called Multi-turn Multiple-choice Machine reading comprehension (M3}) to solve the short text EL from a new perspective: a query is generated for each ambiguous mention exploiting its surrounding context, and an option selection module is employed to identify the golden entity from candidates using the query. In this way, M3 framework sufficiently interacts limited context with candidate entities during the encoding process, as well as implicitly considers the dissimilarities inside the candidate bunch in the selection stage. In addition, we design a two-stage verifier incorporated into M3 to address the commonly existed unlinkable problem in short text. To further consider the topical coherence and interdependence among referred entities, M3 leverages a multi-turn fashion to deal with mentions in a sequence manner by retrospecting historical cues. Evaluation shows that our M3 framework achieves the state-of-the-art performance on five Chinese and English datasets for the real-world short text EL.
Image segmentation is still an open problem especially when intensities of the interested objects are overlapped due to the presence of intensity inhomogeneity (also known as bias field). To segment images with intensity inhomogeneities, a bias correction embedded level set model is proposed where Inhomogeneities are Estimated by Orthogonal Primary Functions (IEOPF). In the proposed model, the smoothly varying bias is estimated by a linear combination of a given set of orthogonal primary functions. An inhomogeneous intensity clustering energy is then defined and membership functions of the clusters described by the level set function are introduced to rewrite the energy as a data term of the proposed model. Similar to popular level set methods, a regularization term and an arc length term are also included to regularize and smooth the level set function, respectively. The proposed model is then extended to multichannel and multiphase patterns to segment colourful images and images with multiple objects, respectively. It has been extensively tested on both synthetic and real images that are widely used in the literature and public BrainWeb and IBSR datasets. Experimental results and comparison with state-of-the-art methods demonstrate that advantages of the proposed model in terms of bias correction and segmentation accuracy.
