Events describe happenings in our world that are of importance. Naturally, understanding events mentioned in multimedia content and how they are related forms an important way of comprehending our world. Existing literature can infer if events across textual and visual (video) domains are identical (via grounding) and thus, on the same semantic level. However, grounding fails to capture the intricate cross-event relations that exist due to the same events being referred to on many semantic levels. For example, in Figure 1, the abstract event of "war" manifests at a lower semantic level through subevents "tanks firing" (in video) and airplane "shot" (in text), leading to a hierarchical, multimodal relationship between the events. In this paper, we propose the task of extracting event hierarchies from multimodal (video and text) data to capture how the same event manifests itself in different modalities at different semantic levels. This reveals the structure of events and is critical to understanding them. To support research on this task, we introduce the Multimodal Hierarchical Events (MultiHiEve) dataset. Unlike prior video-language datasets, MultiHiEve is composed of news video-article pairs, which makes it rich in event hierarchies. We densely annotate a part of the dataset to construct the test benchmark. We show the limitations of state-of-the-art unimodal and multimodal baselines on this task. Further, we address these limitations via a new weakly supervised model, leveraging only unannotated video-article pairs from MultiHiEve. We perform a thorough evaluation of our proposed method which demonstrates improved performance on this task and highlight opportunities for future research.

Recently, there have been significant advancements in Image Restoration based on CNN and transformer. However, the inherent characteristics of the Image Restoration task are often overlooked in many works. These works often focus on the basic block design and stack numerous basic blocks to the model, leading to redundant parameters and unnecessary computations and hindering the efficiency of the image restoration. In this paper, we propose a Lightweight Image Restoration network called LIR to efficiently remove degradation (blur, rain, noise, haze, etc.). A key component in LIR is the Efficient Adaptive Attention (EAA) Block, which is mainly composed of Adaptive Filters and Attention Blocks. It is capable of adaptively sharpening contours, removing degradation, and capturing global information in various image restoration scenes in an efficient and computation-friendly manner. In addition, through a simple structural design, LIR addresses the degradations existing in the local and global residual connections that are ignored by modern networks. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our LIR achieves comparable performance to state-of-the-art networks on most benchmarks with fewer parameters and computations. It is worth noting that our LIR produces better visual results than state-of-the-art networks that are more in line with the human aesthetic.

Despite the potential shown by Explainable AI (XAI) for enhancing understanding of complex AI systems, most XAI methods are designed for technical AI experts rather than non-technical consumers. Consequently, such explanations are overwhelmingly complex and seldom guide users in achieving their desired predicted outcomes. This paper presents ongoing research for crafting XAI systems tailored to guide users in achieving desired outcomes through improved human-AI interactions. This paper highlights the research objectives and methods, key takeaways and implications learned from user studies. It outlines open questions and challenges for enhanced human-AI collaboration, which the author aims to address in future work.

Speech contains rich information on the emotions of humans, and Speech Emotion Recognition (SER) has been an important topic in the area of human-computer interaction. The robustness of SER models is crucial, particularly in privacy-sensitive and reliability-demanding domains like private healthcare. Recently, the vulnerability of deep neural networks in the audio domain to adversarial attacks has become a popular area of research. However, prior works on adversarial attacks in the audio domain primarily rely on iterative gradient-based techniques, which are time-consuming and prone to overfitting the specific threat model. Furthermore, the exploration of sparse perturbations, which have the potential for better stealthiness, remains limited in the audio domain. To address these challenges, we propose a generator-based attack method to generate sparse and transferable adversarial examples to deceive SER models in an end-to-end and efficient manner. We evaluate our method on two widely-used SER datasets, Database of Elicited Mood in Speech (DEMoS) and Interactive Emotional dyadic MOtion CAPture (IEMOCAP), and demonstrate its ability to generate successful sparse adversarial examples in an efficient manner. Moreover, our generated adversarial examples exhibit model-agnostic transferability, enabling effective adversarial attacks on advanced victim models.

Internet-based economies and societies are drowning in deceptive attacks. These attacks take many forms, such as fake news, phishing, and job scams, which we call ``domains of deception.'' Machine-learning and natural-language-processing researchers have been attempting to ameliorate this precarious situation by designing domain-specific detectors. Only a few recent works have considered domain-independent deception. We collect these disparate threads of research and investigate domain-independent deception. First, we provide a new computational definition of deception and break down deception into a new taxonomy. Then, we analyze the debate on linguistic cues for deception and supply guidelines for systematic reviews. Finally, we investigate common linguistic features and give evidence for knowledge transfer across different forms of deception.

Many real-world applications involve some agents that fall into two teams, with payoffs that are equal within the same team but of opposite sign across the opponent team. The so-called two-team zero-sum Markov games (2t0sMGs) can be resolved with reinforcement learning in recent years. However, existing methods are thus inefficient in light of insufficient consideration of intra-team credit assignment, data utilization and computational intractability. In this paper, we propose the individual-global-minimax (IGMM) principle to ensure the coherence between two-team minimax behaviors and the individual greedy behaviors through Q functions in 2t0sMGs. Based on it, we present a novel multi-agent reinforcement learning framework, Factorized Multi-Agent MiniMax Q-Learning (FM3Q), which can factorize the joint minimax Q function into individual ones and iteratively solve for the IGMM-satisfied minimax Q functions for 2t0sMGs. Moreover, an online learning algorithm with neural networks is proposed to implement FM3Q and obtain the deterministic and decentralized minimax policies for two-team players. A theoretical analysis is provided to prove the convergence of FM3Q. Empirically, we use three environments to evaluate the learning efficiency and final performance of FM3Q and show its superiority on 2t0sMGs.

Data plays a fundamental role in the training of Large Language Models (LLMs). Effective data management, particularly in the formulation of a well-suited training dataset, holds significance for enhancing model performance and improving training efficiency during pretraining and supervised fine-tuning phases. Despite the considerable importance of data management, the current research community still falls short in providing a systematic analysis of the rationale behind management strategy selection, its consequential effects, methodologies for evaluating curated datasets, and the ongoing pursuit of improved strategies. Consequently, the exploration of data management has attracted more and more attention among the research community. This survey provides a comprehensive overview of current research in data management within both the pretraining and supervised fine-tuning stages of LLMs, covering various noteworthy aspects of data management strategy design: data quantity, data quality, domain/task composition, etc. Looking toward the future, we extrapolate existing challenges and outline promising directions for development in this field. Therefore, this survey serves as a guiding resource for practitioners aspiring to construct powerful LLMs through effective data management practices. Diffusion models (DMs) have shown great potential for high-quality image synthesis. However, when it comes to producing images with complex scenes, how to properly describe both image global structures and object details remains a challenging task. In this paper, we present Frido, a Feature Pyramid Diffusion model performing a multi-scale coarse-to-fine denoising process for image synthesis. Our model decomposes an input image into scale-dependent vector quantized features, followed by a coarse-to-fine gating for producing image output. During the above multi-scale representation learning stage, additional input conditions like text, scene graph, or image layout can be further exploited. Thus, Frido can be also applied for conditional or cross-modality image synthesis. We conduct extensive experiments over various unconditioned and conditional image generation tasks, ranging from text-to-image synthesis, layout-to-image, scene-graph-to-image, to label-to-image. More specifically, we achieved state-of-the-art FID scores on five benchmarks, namely layout-to-image on COCO and OpenImages, scene-graph-to-image on COCO and Visual Genome, and label-to-image on COCO. Besides entity-centric knowledge, usually organized as Knowledge Graph (KG), events are also an essential kind of knowledge in the world, which trigger the spring up of event-centric knowledge representation form like Event KG (EKG). It plays an increasingly important role in many machine learning and artificial intelligence applications, such as intelligent search, question-answering, recommendation, and text generation. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of EKG from history, ontology, instance, and application views. Specifically, to characterize EKG thoroughly, we focus on its history, definitions, schema induction, acquisition, related representative graphs/systems, and applications. The development processes and trends are studied therein. We further summarize perspective directions to facilitate future research on EKG.

Images can convey rich semantics and induce various emotions in viewers. Recently, with the rapid advancement of emotional intelligence and the explosive growth of visual data, extensive research efforts have been dedicated to affective image content analysis (AICA). In this survey, we will comprehensively review the development of AICA in the recent two decades, especially focusing on the state-of-the-art methods with respect to three main challenges -- the affective gap, perception subjectivity, and label noise and absence. We begin with an introduction to the key emotion representation models that have been widely employed in AICA and description of available datasets for performing evaluation with quantitative comparison of label noise and dataset bias. We then summarize and compare the representative approaches on (1) emotion feature extraction, including both handcrafted and deep features, (2) learning methods on dominant emotion recognition, personalized emotion prediction, emotion distribution learning, and learning from noisy data or few labels, and (3) AICA based applications. Finally, we discuss some challenges and promising research directions in the future, such as image content and context understanding, group emotion clustering, and viewer-image interaction.

Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) can produce images of surprising complexity and realism, but are generally modeled to sample from a single latent source ignoring the explicit spatial interaction between multiple entities that could be present in a scene. Capturing such complex interactions between different objects in the world, including their relative scaling, spatial layout, occlusion, or viewpoint transformation is a challenging problem. In this work, we propose to model object composition in a GAN framework as a self-consistent composition-decomposition network. Our model is conditioned on the object images from their marginal distributions to generate a realistic image from their joint distribution by explicitly learning the possible interactions. We evaluate our model through qualitative experiments and user evaluations in both the scenarios when either paired or unpaired examples for the individual object images and the joint scenes are given during training. Our results reveal that the learned model captures potential interactions between the two object domains given as input to output new instances of composed scene at test time in a reasonable fashion.
