Regula Falsi, or the method of false position, is a numerical method for finding an approximate solution to f(x) = 0 on a finite interval [a, b], where f is a real-valued continuous function on [a, b] and satisfies f(a)f(b) < 0. Previous studies proved the convergence of this method under certain assumptions about the function f, such as both the first and second derivatives of f do not change the sign on the interval [a, b]. In this paper, we remove those assumptions and prove the convergence of the method for all continuous functions.

In this article, we present and analyze a stabilizer-free $C^0$ weak Galerkin (SF-C0WG) method for solving the biharmonic problem. The SF-C0WG method is formulated in terms of cell unknowns which are $C^0$ continuous piecewise polynomials of degree $k+2$ with $k\geq 0$ and in terms of face unknowns which are discontinuous piecewise polynomials of degree $k+1$. The formulation of this SF-C0WG method is without the stabilized or penalty term and is as simple as the $C^1$ conforming finite element scheme of the biharmonic problem. Optimal order error estimates in a discrete $H^2$-like norm and the $H^1$ norm for $k\geq 0$ are established for the corresponding WG finite element solutions. Error estimates in the $L^2$ norm are also derived with an optimal order of convergence for $k>0$ and sub-optimal order of convergence for $k=0$. Numerical experiments are shown to confirm the theoretical results.

The recently proposed statistical finite element (statFEM) approach synthesises measurement data with finite element models and allows for making predictions about the true system response. We provide a probabilistic error analysis for a prototypical statFEM setup based on a Gaussian process prior under the assumption that the noisy measurement data are generated by a deterministic true system response function that satisfies a second-order elliptic partial differential equation for an unknown true source term. In certain cases, properties such as the smoothness of the source term may be misspecified by the Gaussian process model. The error estimates we derive are for the expectation with respect to the measurement noise of the $L^2$-norm of the difference between the true system response and the mean of the statFEM posterior. The estimates imply polynomial rates of convergence in the numbers of measurement points and finite element basis functions and depend on the Sobolev smoothness of the true source term and the Gaussian process model. A numerical example for Poisson's equation is used to illustrate these theoretical results.

We consider infinite-horizon discounted Markov decision problems with finite state and action spaces. We show that with direct parametrization in the policy space, the weighted value function, although non-convex in general, is both quasi-convex and quasi-concave. While quasi-convexity helps explain the convergence of policy gradient methods to global optima, quasi-concavity hints at their convergence guarantees using arbitrarily large step sizes that are not dictated by the Lipschitz constant charactering smoothness of the value function. In particular, we show that when using geometrically increasing step sizes, a general class of policy mirror descent methods, including the natural policy gradient method and a projected Q-descent method, all enjoy a linear rate of convergence without relying on entropy or other strongly convex regularization. In addition, we develop a theory of weak gradient-mapping dominance and use it to prove sharper sublinear convergence rate of the projected policy gradient method. Finally, we also analyze the convergence rate of an inexact policy mirror descent method and estimate its sample complexity under a simple generative model.

In this paper we propose a deep learning based numerical scheme for strongly coupled FBSDE, stemming from stochastic control. It is a modification of the deep BSDE method in which the initial value to the backward equation is not a free parameter, and with a new loss function being the weighted sum of the cost of the control problem, and a variance term which coincides with the means square error in the terminal condition. We show by a numerical example that a direct extension of the classical deep BSDE method to FBSDE, fails for a simple linear-quadratic control problem, and motivate why the new method works. Under regularity and boundedness assumptions on the exact controls of time continuous and time discrete control problems we provide an error analysis for our method. We show empirically that the method converges for three different problems, one being the one that failed for a direct extension of the deep BSDE method.

We are interested in the numerical reconstruction of a vector field with prescribed divergence and curl in a general domain of R 3 or R 2 , not necessarily contractible. To this aim, we introduce some basic concepts of finite element exterieur calculus and rely heavily on recent results of P. Leopardi and A. Stern. The goal of the paper is to take advantage of the links between usual vector calculus and exterior calculus and show the interest of the exterior calculus framework, without too much prior knowledge of the subject. We start by describing the method used for contractible domains and its implementation using the FEniCS library (see fenicsproject.org). We then address the problems encountered with non contractible domains and general boundary conditions and explain how to adapt the method to handle these cases. Finally we give some numerical results obtained with this method, in dimension 2 and 3.

In this paper we study the numerical method for approximating the random periodic solution of semiliear stochastic evolution equations. The main challenge lies in proving a convergence over an infinite time horizon while simulating infinite-dimensional objects. We first show the existence and uniqueness of the random periodic solution to the equation as the limit of the pull-back flows of the equation, and observe that its mild form is well-defined in the intersection of a family of decreasing Hilbert spaces. Then we propose a Galerkin-type exponential integrator scheme and establish its convergence rate of the strong error to the mild solution, where the order of convergence directly depends on the space (among the family of Hilbert spaces) for the initial point to live. We finally conclude with the best order of convergence that is arbitrarily close to 0.5.

In this paper, we revisit the problem of Differentially Private Stochastic Convex Optimization (DP-SCO) and provide excess population risks for some special classes of functions that are faster than the previous results of general convex and strongly convex functions. In the first part of the paper, we study the case where the population risk function satisfies the Tysbakov Noise Condition (TNC) with some parameter $\theta>1$. Specifically, we first show that under some mild assumptions on the loss functions, there is an algorithm whose output could achieve an upper bound of $\tilde{O}((\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}}+\frac{\sqrt{d\log \frac{1}{\delta}}}{n\epsilon})^\frac{\theta}{\theta-1})$ for $(\epsilon, \delta)$-DP when $\theta\geq 2$, here $n$ is the sample size and $d$ is the dimension of the space. Then we address the inefficiency issue, improve the upper bounds by $\text{Poly}(\log n)$ factors and extend to the case where $\theta\geq \bar{\theta}>1$ for some known $\bar{\theta}$. Next we show that the excess population risk of population functions satisfying TNC with parameter $\theta\geq 2$ is always lower bounded by $\Omega((\frac{d}{n\epsilon})^\frac{\theta}{\theta-1}) $ and $\Omega((\frac{\sqrt{d\log \frac{1}{\delta}}}{n\epsilon})^\frac{\theta}{\theta-1})$ for $\epsilon$-DP and $(\epsilon, \delta)$-DP, respectively. With these additional assumptions, we propose a new method whose output could achieve an upper bound of $O(\frac{d\log\frac{1}{\delta}}{n^2\epsilon^2}+\frac{1}{n^{\tau}})$ for any $\tau\geq 1$ in $(\epsilon,\delta)$-DP model if the sample size $n$ is sufficiently large.

We derive and analyze a symmetric interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin scheme for the approximation of the second-order form of the radiative transfer equation in slab geometry. Using appropriate trace lemmas, the analysis can be carried out as for more standard elliptic problems. Supporting examples show the accuracy and stability of the method also numerically. For discretization, we employ quadtree-like grids, which allow for local refinement in phase-space, and we show exemplary that adaptive methods can efficiently approximate discontinuous solutions.

When it comes to the land specific, solution algorithms for these problems are also of great importance in terms of determination of the shortest path in an open area where the road will pass in the field of civil engineering, or route determination of manned or unmanned vehicles for various logistic needs, especially in raw terrains. In addition, path finding problems in the raw terrains are also important for manned and unmanned ground vehicles (UGV) used in the defense industry. Within the scope of this study, a method that can be used for instant route determinations within sight range or for route determinations covering wider areas is proposed. Although the examples presented within the scope of the study are land-based, the method can be applied to almost all problem types of similar nature. The approach used in the study can be briefly described as the mechanical analysis of a surface transformed into a structural load bearing system based on mechanical analogies. In this approach, the determination of the shortest path connecting two points can be realized by following the stress-strain values that will occur by moving the points away from each other or by following a linear line that will be formed between two points during the mechanical analysis. If the proposed approach is to be carried out with multiple rigid body dynamics approaches instead of flexible bodies mechanics, it can be carried out easily and very quickly by determining the shortest path between two points or by tracking the forces. However, the proposed approach in this study is presented by simulating examples of flexible bodies using FEM.

To make deliberate progress towards more intelligent and more human-like artificial systems, we need to be following an appropriate feedback signal: we need to be able to define and evaluate intelligence in a way that enables comparisons between two systems, as well as comparisons with humans. Over the past hundred years, there has been an abundance of attempts to define and measure intelligence, across both the fields of psychology and AI. We summarize and critically assess these definitions and evaluation approaches, while making apparent the two historical conceptions of intelligence that have implicitly guided them. We note that in practice, the contemporary AI community still gravitates towards benchmarking intelligence by comparing the skill exhibited by AIs and humans at specific tasks such as board games and video games. We argue that solely measuring skill at any given task falls short of measuring intelligence, because skill is heavily modulated by prior knowledge and experience: unlimited priors or unlimited training data allow experimenters to "buy" arbitrary levels of skills for a system, in a way that masks the system's own generalization power. We then articulate a new formal definition of intelligence based on Algorithmic Information Theory, describing intelligence as skill-acquisition efficiency and highlighting the concepts of scope, generalization difficulty, priors, and experience. Using this definition, we propose a set of guidelines for what a general AI benchmark should look like. Finally, we present a benchmark closely following these guidelines, the Abstraction and Reasoning Corpus (ARC), built upon an explicit set of priors designed to be as close as possible to innate human priors. We argue that ARC can be used to measure a human-like form of general fluid intelligence and that it enables fair general intelligence comparisons between AI systems and humans.
