Regular monitoring of the primary particles and purity profiles of a drug product during development and manufacturing processes is essential for manufacturers to avoid product variability and contamination. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging helps manufacturers predict how changes affect particle characteristics and purity for virus-based gene therapy vector products and intermediates. Since intact particles can characterize efficacious products, it is beneficial to automate the detection of intact adenovirus against a non-intact-viral background mixed with debris, broken, and artefact particles. In the presence of such particles, detecting intact adenoviruses becomes more challenging. To overcome the challenge, due to such a presence, we developed a software tool for semi-automatic annotation and segmentation of adenoviruses and a software tool for automatic segmentation and detection of intact adenoviruses in TEM imaging systems. The developed semi-automatic tool exploited conventional image analysis techniques while the automatic tool was built based on convolutional neural networks and image analysis techniques. Our quantitative and qualitative evaluations showed outstanding true positive detection rates compared to false positive and negative rates where adenoviruses were nicely detected without mistaking them for real debris, broken adenoviruses, and/or staining artefacts.

Security resources are scarce, and practitioners need guidance in the effective and efficient usage of techniques and tools available in the cybersecurity industry. Two emerging tool types, Interactive Application Security Testing (IAST) and Runtime Application Self-Protection (RASP), have not been thoroughly evaluated against well-established counterparts such as Dynamic Application Security Testing (DAST) and Static Application Security Testing (SAST). The goal of this research is to aid practitioners in making informed choices about the use of Interactive Application Security Testing (IAST) and Runtime Application Self-Protection (RASP) tools through an analysis of their effectiveness and efficiency in comparison with different vulnerability detection and prevention techniques and tools. We apply IAST and RASP on OpenMRS, an open-source Java-based online application. We compare the efficiency and effectiveness of IAST and RASP with techniques applied on OpenMRS in prior work. We measure efficiency and effectiveness in terms of the number and type of vulnerabilities detected and prevented per hour. Our study shows IAST performed relatively well compared to other techniques, performing second-best in both efficiency and effectiveness. IAST detected eight Top-10 OWASP security risks compared to nine by SMPT and seven for EMPT, DAST, and SAST. IAST found more vulnerabilities than SMPT. The efficiency of IAST (2.14 VpH) is second to only EMPT (2.22 VpH). These findings imply that our study benefited from using IAST when conducting black-box security testing. In the context of a large, enterprise-scale web application such as OpenMRS, RASP does not replace vulnerability detection, while IAST is a powerful tool that complements other techniques.

Solving partially observable Markov decision processes (POMDPs) with high dimensional and continuous observations, such as camera images, is required for many real life robotics and planning problems. Recent researches suggested machine learned probabilistic models as observation models, but their use is currently too computationally expensive for online deployment. We deal with the question of what would be the implication of using simplified observation models for planning, while retaining formal guarantees on the quality of the solution. Our main contribution is a novel probabilistic bound based on a statistical total variation distance of the simplified model. We show that it bounds the theoretical POMDP value w.r.t. original model, from the empirical planned value with the simplified model, by generalizing recent results of particle-belief MDP concentration bounds. Our calculations can be separated into offline and online parts, and we arrive at formal guarantees without having to access the costly model at all during planning, which is also a novel result. Finally, we demonstrate in simulation how to integrate the bound into the routine of an existing continuous online POMDP solver.

Accurately predicting molecular properties is a challenging but essential task in drug discovery. Recently, many mono-modal deep learning methods have been successfully applied to molecular property prediction. However, the inherent limitation of mono-modal learning arises from relying solely on one modality of molecular representation, which restricts a comprehensive understanding of drug molecules and hampers their resilience against data noise. To overcome the limitations, we construct multimodal deep learning models to cover different molecular representations. We convert drug molecules into three molecular representations, SMILES-encoded vectors, ECFP fingerprints, and molecular graphs. To process the modal information, Transformer-Encoder, bi-directional gated recurrent units (BiGRU), and graph convolutional network (GCN) are utilized for feature learning respectively, which can enhance the model capability to acquire complementary and naturally occurring bioinformatics information. We evaluated our triple-modal model on six molecule datasets. Different from bi-modal learning models, we adopt five fusion methods to capture the specific features and leverage the contribution of each modal information better. Compared with mono-modal models, our multimodal fused deep learning (MMFDL) models outperform single models in accuracy, reliability, and resistance capability against noise. Moreover, we demonstrate its generalization ability in the prediction of binding constants for protein-ligand complex molecules in the refined set of PDBbind. The advantage of the multimodal model lies in its ability to process diverse sources of data using proper models and suitable fusion methods, which would enhance the noise resistance of the model while obtaining data diversity.

Despite the benefits of personalizing items and information tailored to users' needs, it has been found that recommender systems tend to introduce biases that favor popular items or certain categories of items, and dominant user groups. In this study, we aim to characterize the systematic errors of a recommendation system and how they manifest in various accountability issues, such as stereotypes, biases, and miscalibration. We propose a unified framework that distinguishes the sources of prediction errors into a set of key measures that quantify the various types of system-induced effects, both at the individual and collective levels. Based on our measuring framework, we examine the most widely adopted algorithms in the context of movie recommendation. Our research reveals three important findings: (1) Differences between algorithms: recommendations generated by simpler algorithms tend to be more stereotypical but less biased than those generated by more complex algorithms. (2) Disparate impact on groups and individuals: system-induced biases and stereotypes have a disproportionate effect on atypical users and minority groups (e.g., women and older users). (3) Mitigation opportunity: using structural equation modeling, we identify the interactions between user characteristics (typicality and diversity), system-induced effects, and miscalibration. We further investigate the possibility of mitigating system-induced effects by oversampling underrepresented groups and individuals, which was found to be effective in reducing stereotypes and improving recommendation quality. Our research is the first systematic examination of not only system-induced effects and miscalibration but also the stereotyping issue in recommender systems.

Classifying hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) is a critical step in treatment selection and prognosis evaluation for patients with liver diseases. Traditional histopathological diagnosis poses challenges in this context. In this study, we introduce a novel polarization and radiomics feature fusion network, which combines polarization features obtained from Mueller matrix images of liver pathological samples with radiomics features derived from corresponding pathological images to classify HCC and ICC. Our fusion network integrates a two-tier fusion approach, comprising early feature-level fusion and late classification-level fusion. By harnessing the strengths of polarization imaging techniques and image feature-based machine learning, our proposed fusion network significantly enhances classification accuracy. Notably, even at reduced imaging resolutions, the fusion network maintains robust performance due to the additional information provided by polarization features, which may not align with human visual perception. Our experimental results underscore the potential of this fusion network as a powerful tool for computer-aided diagnosis of HCC and ICC, showcasing the benefits and prospects of integrating polarization imaging techniques into the current image-intensive digital pathological diagnosis. We aim to contribute this innovative approach to top-tier journals, offering fresh insights and valuable tools in the fields of medical imaging and cancer diagnosis. By introducing polarization imaging into liver cancer classification, we demonstrate its interdisciplinary potential in addressing challenges in medical image analysis, promising advancements in medical imaging and cancer diagnosis.

The article outlines the methodology of structural and parametric synthesis of neural network controllers for controlling objects with limiters under incomplete information about the controlled object. Artificial neural networks are used to create controllers that are sequentially integrated into a control system with control objects. Reinforcement learning and pre-building a neural network imitator of the control object are used to synthesize the neural network controller. This approach is particularly effective when classical control system synthesis methods are not applicable due to significant nonlinearity and the difficulty in forming a mathematical model of the control object with the required accuracy. The proposed methods expand the class of technical systems for which direct synthesis of near-optimal control laws is possible. The robustness, adaptability and technical feasibility of neural network controllers make them interesting for practical applications. The main attention in the article is paid to the choice of neural network structure in the imitator and controller, formation of training samples taking into account the limitations of the control object.

The rapid accumulation of Earth observation data presents a formidable challenge for the processing capabilities of traditional remote sensing desktop software, particularly when it comes to analyzing expansive geographical areas and prolonged temporal sequences. Cloud computing has emerged as a transformative solution, surmounting the barriers traditionally associated with the management and computation of voluminous datasets. This paper introduces the Analytical Insight of Earth (AI Earth), an innovative remote sensing intelligent computing cloud platform, powered by the robust Alibaba Cloud infrastructure. AI Earth provides an extensive collection of publicly available remote sensing datasets, along with a suite of computational tools powered by a high-performance computing engine. Furthermore, it provides a variety of classic deep learning (DL) models and a novel remote sensing large vision segmentation model tailored to different recognition tasks. The platform enables users to upload their unique samples for model training and to deploy third-party models, thereby increasing the accessibility and openness of DL applications. This platform will facilitate researchers in leveraging remote sensing data for large-scale applied research in areas such as resources, environment, ecology, and climate.

The effectiveness of advertising in e-commerce largely depends on the ability of merchants to bid on and win impressions for their targeted users. The bidding procedure is highly complex due to various factors such as market competition, user behavior, and the diverse objectives of advertisers. In this paper we consider the problem at the level of user timelines instead of individual bid requests, manipulating full policies (i.e. pre-defined bidding strategies) and not bid values. In order to optimally allocate policies to users, typical multiple treatments allocation methods solve knapsack-like problems which aim at maximizing an expected value under constraints. In the industrial contexts such as online advertising, we argue that optimizing for the probability of success is a more suited objective than expected value maximization, and we introduce the SuccessProbaMax algorithm that aims at finding the policy allocation which is the most likely to outperform a fixed reference policy. Finally, we conduct comprehensive experiments both on synthetic and real-world data to evaluate its performance. The results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm outperforms conventional expected-value maximization algorithms in terms of success rate.

Understanding causality helps to structure interventions to achieve specific goals and enables predictions under interventions. With the growing importance of learning causal relationships, causal discovery tasks have transitioned from using traditional methods to infer potential causal structures from observational data to the field of pattern recognition involved in deep learning. The rapid accumulation of massive data promotes the emergence of causal search methods with brilliant scalability. Existing summaries of causal discovery methods mainly focus on traditional methods based on constraints, scores and FCMs, there is a lack of perfect sorting and elaboration for deep learning-based methods, also lacking some considers and exploration of causal discovery methods from the perspective of variable paradigms. Therefore, we divide the possible causal discovery tasks into three types according to the variable paradigm and give the definitions of the three tasks respectively, define and instantiate the relevant datasets for each task and the final causal model constructed at the same time, then reviews the main existing causal discovery methods for different tasks. Finally, we propose some roadmaps from different perspectives for the current research gaps in the field of causal discovery and point out future research directions.

This work considers the question of how convenient access to copious data impacts our ability to learn causal effects and relations. In what ways is learning causality in the era of big data different from -- or the same as -- the traditional one? To answer this question, this survey provides a comprehensive and structured review of both traditional and frontier methods in learning causality and relations along with the connections between causality and machine learning. This work points out on a case-by-case basis how big data facilitates, complicates, or motivates each approach.
