In many Internet of Things (IoT) applications, data sensed by an IoT device are continuously sent to the server and monitored against a specification. Since the data often contain sensitive information, and the monitored specification is usually proprietary, both must be kept private from the other end. We propose a protocol to conduct oblivious online monitoring -- online monitoring conducted without revealing the private information of each party to the other -- against a safety LTL specification. In our protocol, we first convert a safety LTL formula into a DFA and conduct online monitoring with the DFA. Based on fully homomorphic encryption (FHE), we propose two online algorithms (Reverse and Block) to run a DFA obliviously. We prove the correctness and security of our entire protocol. We also show the scalability of our algorithms theoretically and empirically. Our case study shows that our algorithms are fast enough to monitor blood glucose levels online, demonstrating our protocol's practical relevance.

In this paper, we propose an encryption method for ConvMixer models with a secret key. Encryption methods for DNN models have been studied to achieve adversarial defense, model protection and privacy-preserving image classification. However, the use of conventional encryption methods degrades the performance of models compared with that of plain models. Accordingly, we propose a novel method for encrypting ConvMixer models. The method is carried out on the basis of an embedding architecture that ConvMixer has, and models encrypted with the method can have the same performance as models trained with plain images only when using test images encrypted with a secret key. In addition, the proposed method does not require any specially prepared data for model training or network modification. In an experiment, the effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated in terms of classification accuracy and model protection in an image classification task on the CIFAR10 dataset.

Blockchain network deployment and evaluation have become prevalent due to the demand for private blockchains by enterprises, governments, and edge computing systems. Whilst a blockchain network's deployment and evaluation are driven by its architecture, practitioners still need to learn and carry out many repetitive and error-prone activities to transform architecture into an operational blockchain network and evaluate it. Greater efficiency could be gained if practitioners focus solely on the architecture design, a valuable and hard-to-automate activity, and leave the implementation steps to an automation framework. This paper proposes an automation framework called NVAL (Network Deployment and Evaluation Framework), which can deploy and evaluate blockchain networks based on their architecture specifications. The key idea of NVAL is reusing and combining the existing automation scripts and utilities of various blockchain types to deploy and evaluate incoming blockchain network architectures. We propose a novel meta-model to capture blockchain network architectures as computer-readable artefacts and employ a state-space search approach to plan and conduct their deployment and evaluation. An evaluative case study shows that NVAL successfully combines seven deployment and evaluation procedures to deploy 65 networks with 12 different architectures and generate 295 evaluation datasets whilst incurring a negligible processing time overhead.

The CSP dichotomy conjecture has been recently established, but a number of other dichotomy questions remain open, including the dichotomy classification of list homomorphism problems for signed graphs. Signed graphs arise naturally in many contexts, including for instance nowhere-zero flows for graphs embedded in non-orientable surfaces. For a fixed signed graph $\widehat{H}$, the list homomorphism problem asks whether an input signed graph $\widehat{G}$ with lists $L(v) \subseteq V(\widehat{H}), v \in V(\widehat{G}),$ admits a homomorphism $f$ to $\widehat{H}$ with all $f(v) \in L(v), v \in V(\widehat{G})$. Usually, a dichotomy classification is easier to obtain for list homomorphisms than for homomorphisms, but in the context of signed graphs a structural classification of the complexity of list homomorphism problems has not even been conjectured, even though the classification of the complexity of homomorphism problems is known. Kim and Siggers have conjectured a structural classification in the special case of "weakly balanced" signed graphs. We confirm their conjecture for reflexive and irreflexive signed graphs; this generalizes previous results on weakly balanced signed trees, and weakly balanced separable signed graphs. In the reflexive case, the result was first presented in a paper of Kim and Siggers, where the proof relies on a result in this paper. The irreflexive result is new, and its proof depends on first deriving a theorem on extensions of min orderings of (unsigned) bipartite graphs, which is interesting on its own.

We present a non-asymptotic lower bound on the eigenspectrum of the design matrix generated by any linear bandit algorithm with sub-linear regret when the action set has well-behaved curvature. Specifically, we show that the minimum eigenvalue of the expected design matrix grows as $\Omega(\sqrt{n})$ whenever the expected cumulative regret of the algorithm is $O(\sqrt{n})$, where $n$ is the learning horizon, and the action-space has a constant Hessian around the optimal arm. This shows that such action-spaces force a polynomial lower bound rather than a logarithmic lower bound, as shown by \cite{lattimore2017end}, in discrete (i.e., well-separated) action spaces. Furthermore, while the previous result is shown to hold only in the asymptotic regime (as $n \to \infty$), our result for these ``locally rich" action spaces is any-time. Additionally, under a mild technical assumption, we obtain a similar lower bound on the minimum eigen value holding with high probability. We apply our result to two practical scenarios -- \emph{model selection} and \emph{clustering} in linear bandits. For model selection, we show that an epoch-based linear bandit algorithm adapts to the true model complexity at a rate exponential in the number of epochs, by virtue of our novel spectral bound. For clustering, we consider a multi agent framework where we show, by leveraging the spectral result, that no forced exploration is necessary -- the agents can run a linear bandit algorithm and estimate their underlying parameters at once, and hence incur a low regret.

US Wind power generation has grown significantly over the last decades, both in number and average size of operating turbines. A lower specific power, i.e. larger rotor blades relative to wind turbine capacities, allows to increase capacity factors and to reduce cost. However, this development also reduces system efficiency, i.e. the share of power in the wind flowing through rotor swept areas which is converted to electricity. At the same time, also output power density, the amount of electric energy generated per unit of rotor swept area, may decrease due to the decline of specific power. The precise outcome depends, however, on the interplay of wind resources and wind turbine models. In this study, we present a decomposition of historical US wind power generation data for the period 2001-2021 to study to which extent the decrease in specific power affected system efficiency and output power density. We show that as a result of a decrease in specific power, system efficiency fell and therefore, output power density was reduced during the last decade. Furthermore, we show that the wind available to turbines has increased substantially due to increases in the average hub height of turbines since 2001. However, site quality has slightly decreased during the last 20 years.

Optimal execution is a sequential decision-making problem for cost-saving in algorithmic trading. Studies have found that reinforcement learning (RL) can help decide the order-splitting sizes. However, a problem remains unsolved: how to place limit orders at appropriate limit prices? The key challenge lies in the "continuous-discrete duality" of the action space. On the one hand, the continuous action space using percentage changes in prices is preferred for generalization. On the other hand, the trader eventually needs to choose limit prices discretely due to the existence of the tick size, which requires specialization for every single stock with different characteristics (e.g., the liquidity and the price range). So we need continuous control for generalization and discrete control for specialization. To this end, we propose a hybrid RL method to combine the advantages of both of them. We first use a continuous control agent to scope an action subset, then deploy a fine-grained agent to choose a specific limit price. Extensive experiments show that our method has higher sample efficiency and better training stability than existing RL algorithms and significantly outperforms previous learning-based methods for order execution.

The popularity of online fashion shopping continues to grow. The ability to offer an effective recommendation to customers is becoming increasingly important. In this work, we focus on Fashion Outfits Challenge, part of SIGIR 2022 Workshop on eCommerce. The challenge is centered around Fill in the Blank (FITB) task that implies predicting the missing outfit, given an incomplete outfit and a list of candidates. In this paper, we focus on applying siamese networks on the task. More specifically, we explore how combining information from multiple modalities (textual and visual modality) impacts the performance of the model on the task. We evaluate our model on the test split provided by the challenge organizers and the test split with gold assignments that we created during the development phase. We discover that using both visual, and visual and textual data demonstrates promising results on the task. We conclude by suggesting directions for further improvement of our method.

It was observed in \citet{gupta2009differentially} that the Set Cover problem has strong impossibility results under differential privacy. In our work, we observe that these hardness results dissolve when we turn to the Partial Set Cover problem, where we only need to cover a $\rho$-fraction of the elements in the universe, for some $\rho\in(0,1)$. We show that this relaxation enables us to avoid the impossibility results: under loose conditions on the input set system, we give differentially private algorithms which output an explicit set cover with non-trivial approximation guarantees. In particular, this is the first differentially private algorithm which outputs an explicit set cover. Using our algorithm for Partial Set Cover as a subroutine, we give a differentially private (bicriteria) approximation algorithm for a facility location problem which generalizes $k$-center/$k$-supplier with outliers. Like with the Set Cover problem, no algorithm has been able to give non-trivial guarantees for $k$-center/$k$-supplier-type facility location problems due to the high sensitivity and impossibility results. Our algorithm shows that relaxing the covering requirement to serving only a $\rho$-fraction of the population, for $\rho\in(0,1)$, enables us to circumvent the inherent hardness. Overall, our work is an important step in tackling and understanding impossibility results in private combinatorial optimization.

Recent years have witnessed significant advances in technologies and services in modern network applications, including smart grid management, wireless communication, cybersecurity as well as multi-agent autonomous systems. Considering the heterogeneous nature of networked entities, emerging network applications call for game-theoretic models and learning-based approaches in order to create distributed network intelligence that responds to uncertainties and disruptions in a dynamic or an adversarial environment. This paper articulates the confluence of networks, games and learning, which establishes a theoretical underpinning for understanding multi-agent decision-making over networks. We provide an selective overview of game-theoretic learning algorithms within the framework of stochastic approximation theory, and associated applications in some representative contexts of modern network systems, such as the next generation wireless communication networks, the smart grid and distributed machine learning. In addition to existing research works on game-theoretic learning over networks, we highlight several new angles and research endeavors on learning in games that are related to recent developments in artificial intelligence. Some of the new angles extrapolate from our own research interests. The overall objective of the paper is to provide the reader a clear picture of the strengths and challenges of adopting game-theoretic learning methods within the context of network systems, and further to identify fruitful future research directions on both theoretical and applied studies.

The accurate and interpretable prediction of future events in time-series data often requires the capturing of representative patterns (or referred to as states) underpinning the observed data. To this end, most existing studies focus on the representation and recognition of states, but ignore the changing transitional relations among them. In this paper, we present evolutionary state graph, a dynamic graph structure designed to systematically represent the evolving relations (edges) among states (nodes) along time. We conduct analysis on the dynamic graphs constructed from the time-series data and show that changes on the graph structures (e.g., edges connecting certain state nodes) can inform the occurrences of events (i.e., time-series fluctuation). Inspired by this, we propose a novel graph neural network model, Evolutionary State Graph Network (EvoNet), to encode the evolutionary state graph for accurate and interpretable time-series event prediction. Specifically, Evolutionary State Graph Network models both the node-level (state-to-state) and graph-level (segment-to-segment) propagation, and captures the node-graph (state-to-segment) interactions over time. Experimental results based on five real-world datasets show that our approach not only achieves clear improvements compared with 11 baselines, but also provides more insights towards explaining the results of event predictions.
