We consider error-correction coding schemes for adversarial wiretap channels (AWTCs) in which the channel can a) read a fraction of the codeword bits up to a bound $r$ and b) flip a fraction of the bits up to a bound $p$. The channel can freely choose the locations of the bit reads and bit flips via a process with unbounded computational power. Codes for the AWTC are of broad interest in the area of information security, as they can provide data resiliency in settings where an attacker has limited access to a storage or transmission medium. We investigate a family of non-linear codes known as pseudolinear codes, which were first proposed by Guruswami and Indyk (FOCS 2001) for constructing list-decodable codes independent of the AWTC setting. Unlike general non-linear codes, pseudolinear codes admit efficient encoders and have succinct representations. We focus on unique decoding and show that random pseudolinear codes can achieve rates up to the binary symmetric channel (BSC) capacity $1-H_2(p)$ for any $p,r$ in the less noisy region: $p<1/2$ and $r<1-H_2(p)$ where $H_2(\cdot)$ is the binary entropy function. Thus, pseudolinear codes are the first known optimal-rate binary code family for the less noisy AWTC that admit efficient encoders. The above result can be viewed as a derandomization result of random general codes in the AWTC setting, which in turn opens new avenues for applying derandomization techniques to randomized constructions of AWTC codes. Our proof applies a novel concentration inequality for sums of random variables with limited independence which may be of interest as an analysis tool more generally.

Partial edge drawings (PED) of graphs avoid edge crossings by subdividing each edge into three parts and representing only its stubs, i.e., the parts incident to the end-nodes. The morphing edge drawing model (MED) extends the PED drawing style by animations that smoothly morph each edge between its representation as stubs and the one as a fully drawn segment while avoiding new crossings. Participants of a previous study on MED (Misue and Akasaka, GD19) reported eye straining caused by the animation. We conducted a user study to evaluate how this effect is influenced by varying animation speed and animation dynamic by considering an easing technique that is commonly used in web design. Our results provide indications that the easing technique may help users in executing topology-based tasks accurately. The participants also expressed appreciation for the easing and a preference for a slow animation speed.

Sublinear time complexity is required by the massively parallel computation (MPC) model. Breaking dynamic programs into a set of sparse dynamic programs that can be divided, solved, and merged in sublinear time. The rectangle escape problem (REP) is defined as follows: For $n$ axis-aligned rectangles inside an axis-aligned bounding box $B$, extend each rectangle in only one of the four directions: up, down, left, or right until it reaches $B$ and the density $k$ is minimized, where $k$ is the maximum number of extensions of rectangles to the boundary that pass through a point inside bounding box $B$. We give a $2$-approximation algorithm for SEP with $k\geq2$ with time complexity $O(n^{3/2}k^2)$. This improves the time complexity of existing algorithms which are at least quadratic. Also, the approximation ratio of our algorithm for $k\geq 3$ is $3/2$ which is tight. We also give a $8$-approximation algorithm for REP with time complexity $O(n\log n+nk)$ and give a MPC version of this algorithm for $k=O(1)$ which is the first parallel algorithm for this problem.

Voxel-based segmentation volumes often store a large number of labels and voxels, and the resulting amount of data can make storage, transfer, and interactive visualization difficult. We present a lossless compression technique which addresses these challenges. It processes individual small bricks of a segmentation volume and compactly encodes the labelled regions and their boundaries by an iterative refinement scheme. The result for each brick is a list of labels, and a sequence of operations to reconstruct the brick which is further compressed using rANS-entropy coding. As the relative frequencies of operations are very similar across bricks, the entropy coding can use global frequency tables for an entire data set which enables efficient and effective parallel (de)compression. Our technique achieves high throughput (up to gigabytes per second both for compression and decompression) and strong compression ratios of about 1% to 3% of the original data set size while being applicable to GPU-based rendering. We evaluate our method for various data sets from different fields and demonstrate GPU-based volume visualization with on-the-fly decompression, level-of-detail rendering (with optional on-demand streaming of detail coefficients to the GPU), and a caching strategy for decompressed bricks for further performance improvement.

This work presents a generalized modulation for any multidimensional channel. Recently, Higher Order Mercer's Theorem (HOGMT) [1] has been proposed to decompose multi-user non-stationary channels into independent fading subchannels (Eigenwaves). Based on HOGMT decomposition, we develop Multidimensional Eigenwaves Multiplexing (MEM) modulation which uses jointly orthogonal eigenwaves, decomposed from the multidimensional channel as subcarriers. Data symbols modulated by these eigenwaves can achieve orthogonality across each degree of freedom(\eg space (users/antennas), time-frequency and delay-Doppler). Consequently, the transmitted remain independent over the high dimensional channel, thereby avoiding interference from other symbols.

Humans perceive the world by concurrently processing and fusing high-dimensional inputs from multiple modalities such as vision and audio. Machine perception models, in stark contrast, are typically modality-specific and optimised for unimodal benchmarks, and hence late-stage fusion of final representations or predictions from each modality (`late-fusion') is still a dominant paradigm for multimodal video classification. Instead, we introduce a novel transformer based architecture that uses `fusion bottlenecks' for modality fusion at multiple layers. Compared to traditional pairwise self-attention, our model forces information between different modalities to pass through a small number of bottleneck latents, requiring the model to collate and condense the most relevant information in each modality and only share what is necessary. We find that such a strategy improves fusion performance, at the same time reducing computational cost. We conduct thorough ablation studies, and achieve state-of-the-art results on multiple audio-visual classification benchmarks including Audioset, Epic-Kitchens and VGGSound. All code and models will be released.

The chronological order of user-item interactions can reveal time-evolving and sequential user behaviors in many recommender systems. The items that users will interact with may depend on the items accessed in the past. However, the substantial increase of users and items makes sequential recommender systems still face non-trivial challenges: (1) the hardness of modeling the short-term user interests; (2) the difficulty of capturing the long-term user interests; (3) the effective modeling of item co-occurrence patterns. To tackle these challenges, we propose a memory augmented graph neural network (MA-GNN) to capture both the long- and short-term user interests. Specifically, we apply a graph neural network to model the item contextual information within a short-term period and utilize a shared memory network to capture the long-range dependencies between items. In addition to the modeling of user interests, we employ a bilinear function to capture the co-occurrence patterns of related items. We extensively evaluate our model on five real-world datasets, comparing with several state-of-the-art methods and using a variety of performance metrics. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our model for the task of Top-K sequential recommendation.

We advocate the use of implicit fields for learning generative models of shapes and introduce an implicit field decoder for shape generation, aimed at improving the visual quality of the generated shapes. An implicit field assigns a value to each point in 3D space, so that a shape can be extracted as an iso-surface. Our implicit field decoder is trained to perform this assignment by means of a binary classifier. Specifically, it takes a point coordinate, along with a feature vector encoding a shape, and outputs a value which indicates whether the point is outside the shape or not. By replacing conventional decoders by our decoder for representation learning and generative modeling of shapes, we demonstrate superior results for tasks such as shape autoencoding, generation, interpolation, and single-view 3D reconstruction, particularly in terms of visual quality.

Many current applications use recommendations in order to modify the natural user behavior, such as to increase the number of sales or the time spent on a website. This results in a gap between the final recommendation objective and the classical setup where recommendation candidates are evaluated by their coherence with past user behavior, by predicting either the missing entries in the user-item matrix, or the most likely next event. To bridge this gap, we optimize a recommendation policy for the task of increasing the desired outcome versus the organic user behavior. We show this is equivalent to learning to predict recommendation outcomes under a fully random recommendation policy. To this end, we propose a new domain adaptation algorithm that learns from logged data containing outcomes from a biased recommendation policy and predicts recommendation outcomes according to random exposure. We compare our method against state-of-the-art factorization methods, in addition to new approaches of causal recommendation and show significant improvements.

High spectral dimensionality and the shortage of annotations make hyperspectral image (HSI) classification a challenging problem. Recent studies suggest that convolutional neural networks can learn discriminative spatial features, which play a paramount role in HSI interpretation. However, most of these methods ignore the distinctive spectral-spatial characteristic of hyperspectral data. In addition, a large amount of unlabeled data remains an unexploited gold mine for efficient data use. Therefore, we proposed an integration of generative adversarial networks (GANs) and probabilistic graphical models for HSI classification. Specifically, we used a spectral-spatial generator and a discriminator to identify land cover categories of hyperspectral cubes. Moreover, to take advantage of a large amount of unlabeled data, we adopted a conditional random field to refine the preliminary classification results generated by GANs. Experimental results obtained using two commonly studied datasets demonstrate that the proposed framework achieved encouraging classification accuracy using a small number of data for training.

Deep neural networks (DNNs) have been found to be vulnerable to adversarial examples resulting from adding small-magnitude perturbations to inputs. Such adversarial examples can mislead DNNs to produce adversary-selected results. Different attack strategies have been proposed to generate adversarial examples, but how to produce them with high perceptual quality and more efficiently requires more research efforts. In this paper, we propose AdvGAN to generate adversarial examples with generative adversarial networks (GANs), which can learn and approximate the distribution of original instances. For AdvGAN, once the generator is trained, it can generate adversarial perturbations efficiently for any instance, so as to potentially accelerate adversarial training as defenses. We apply AdvGAN in both semi-whitebox and black-box attack settings. In semi-whitebox attacks, there is no need to access the original target model after the generator is trained, in contrast to traditional white-box attacks. In black-box attacks, we dynamically train a distilled model for the black-box model and optimize the generator accordingly. Adversarial examples generated by AdvGAN on different target models have high attack success rate under state-of-the-art defenses compared to other attacks. Our attack has placed the first with 92.76% accuracy on a public MNIST black-box attack challenge.
