Effective degree of freedom (EDOF) of a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) system represents its equivalent number of independent single-input-single-output (SISO) systems, which directly characterizes the communication performance. Traditional EDOF only considers single polarization, where the full polarized components degrade into two independent transverse components under the far-field approximation. However, the traditional model is not applicable to complex scenarios especially for the near-field region. Based on an electromagnetic (EM) channel model built from the dyadic Green's function, we first calculate the EM EDOF to estimate the performance of an arbitrary MIMO system with full polarizations in free space. Then, we clarify the relations between the limit of EDOF and the optimal number of sources/receivers. Finally, potential benefits of near-field MIMO communications are demonstrated with the EM EDOF, in which the contribution of the longitudinally polarized source is taken into account. This work establishes a fundamental EM framework for MIMO wireless communications.
Networked control systems (NCSs) are feedback control loops that are closed over a communication network. Emerging applications, such as telerobotics, drones and autonomous driving are the most prominent examples of such systems. Regular and timely information sharing between the components of NCSs is essential, as stale information can lead to performance degradation or even physical damage. In this work, we consider multiple heterogeneous NCSs that transmit their system state over a shared physical wireless channel towards a gateway node. We conduct a comprehensive experimental study on selected MAC protocols using software-defined radios with state-of-the-art (SotA) solutions that have been designed to increase information freshness and control performance. As a significant improvement over the SotA, we propose a contention-free algorithm that is able to outperform the existing solutions by combining their strengths in one protocol. In addition, we propose a new metric called normalized mean squared error and demonstrate its effectiveness as utility for scheduling in a case study with multiple inverted pendulums. From our experimental study and results, we observe that a control-aware prioritization of the sub-systems contributes to minimizing the negative effects of information staleness on control performance. In particular, as the number of devices increases, the benefit of control-awareness to the quality of control stands out when compared to protocols that focus solely on maximizing information freshness.
The scope of this paper is the analysis and approximation of an optimal control problem related to the Allen-Cahn equation. A tracking functional is minimized subject to the Allen-Cahn equation using distributed controls that satisfy point-wise control constraints. First and second order necessary and sufficient conditions are proved. The lowest order discontinuous Galerkin - in time - scheme is considered for the approximation of the control to state and adjoint state mappings. Under a suitable restriction on maximum size of the temporal and spatial discretization parameters $k$, $h$ respectively in terms of the parameter $\epsilon$ that describes the thickness of the interface layer, a-priori estimates are proved with constants depending polynomially upon $1/ \epsilon$. Unlike to previous works for the uncontrolled Allen-Cahn problem our approach does not rely on a construction of an approximation of the spectral estimate, and as a consequence our estimates are valid under low regularity assumptions imposed by the optimal control setting. These estimates are also valid in cases where the solution and its discrete approximation do not satisfy uniform space-time bounds independent of $\epsilon$. These estimates and a suitable localization technique, via the second order condition (see \cite{Arada-Casas-Troltzsch_2002,Casas-Mateos-Troltzsch_2005,Casas-Raymond_2006,Casas-Mateos-Raymond_2007}), allows to prove error estimates for the difference between local optimal controls and their discrete approximation as well as between the associated state and adjoint state variables and their discrete approximations
Computational drug repositioning technology is an effective tool to accelerate drug development. Although this technique has been widely used and successful in recent decades, many existing models still suffer from multiple drawbacks such as the massive number of unvalidated drug-disease associations and the inner product. The limitations of these works are mainly due to the following two reasons: firstly, previous works used negative sampling techniques to treat unvalidated drug-disease associations as negative samples, which is invalid in real-world settings; secondly, the inner product cannot fully take into account the feature information contained in the latent factor of drug and disease. In this paper, we propose a novel PUON framework for addressing the above deficiencies, which models the risk estimator of computational drug repositioning only using validated (Positive) and unvalidated (Unlabelled) drug-disease associations without employing negative sampling techniques. The PUON also proposed an Outer Neighborhood-based classifier for modeling the cross-feature information of latent facotors of drugs and diseases. For a comprehensive comparison, we considered 8 popular baselines. Extensive experiments in three real-world datasets showed that PUON achieved the best performance based on 3 evaluation metrics.
The asymptotic distribution of a wide class of V- and U-statistics with estimated parameters is derived in the case when the kernel is not necessarily differentiable along the parameter. The results have their application in goodness-of-fit problems.
The highly directional beams applied in millimeter wave (mmWave) cellular networks make it possible to achieve near interference-free (NIF) transmission under judiciously designed space-time user scheduling, where the power of intra-/inter-cell interference between any two users is below a predefined threshold. In this paper, we investigate two aspects of the NIF space-time user scheduling in a multi-cell mmWave network with multi-RF-chain base stations. Firstly, given that each user has a requirement on the number of space-time resource elements, we study the NIF user scheduling problem to minimize the unfulfilled user requirements, so that the space-time resources can be utilized most efficiently and meanwhile all strong interferences are avoided. A near-optimal scheduling algorithm is proposed with performance close to the lower bound of unfulfilled requirements. Furthermore, we study the joint NIF user scheduling and power allocation problem to minimize the power consumption under the constraint of rate requirements. Based on our proposed NIF scheduling, an energy-efficient joint scheduling and power allocation scheme is designed with limited channel state information, which outperforms the existing independent set based schemes, and has near-optimal performance as well.
The accurate estimation of Channel State Information (CSI) is of crucial importance for the successful operation of Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) communication systems, especially in a Multi-User (MU) time-varying environment and when employing the emerging technology of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs). Their predominantly passive nature renders the estimation of the channels involved in the user-RIS-base station link a quite challenging problem. Moreover, the time-varying nature of most of the realistic wireless channels drives up the cost of real-time channel tracking significantly, especially when RISs of massive size are deployed. In this paper, we develop a channel tracking scheme for the uplink of RIS-enabled MU MIMO systems in the presence of channel fading. The starting point is a tensor representation of the received signal and we rely on its PARAllel FACtor (PARAFAC) analysis to both get the initial estimate and track the channel time variation. Simulation results for various system settings are reported, which validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed channel tracking approach.
The emergent technology of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) has the potential to transform wireless environments into controllable systems, through programmable propagation of information-bearing signals. Techniques stemming from the field of Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) have recently gained popularity in maximizing the sum-rate performance in multi-user communication systems empowered by RISs. Such approaches are commonly based on Markov Decision Processes (MDPs). In this paper, we instead investigate the sum-rate design problem under the scope of the Multi-Armed Bandits (MAB) setting, which is a relaxation of the MDP framework. Nevertheless, in many cases, the MAB formulation is more appropriate to the channel and system models under the assumptions typically made in the RIS literature. To this end, we propose a simpler DRL approach for orchestrating multiple metasurfaces in RIS-empowered multi-user Multiple-Input Single-Output (MISO) systems, which we numerically show to perform equally well with a state-of-the-art MDP-based approach, while being less demanding computationally.
This paper is concerned with two improved variants of the Hutch++ algorithm for estimating the trace of a square matrix, implicitly given through matrix-vector products. Hutch++ combines randomized low-rank approximation in a first phase with stochastic trace estimation in a second phase. In turn, Hutch++ only requires $O\left(\varepsilon^{-1}\right)$ matrix-vector products to approximate the trace within a relative error $\varepsilon$ with high probability. This compares favorably with the $O\left(\varepsilon^{-2}\right)$ matrix-vector products needed when using stochastic trace estimation alone. In Hutch++, the number of matrix-vector products is fixed a priori and distributed in a prescribed fashion among the two phases. In this work, we derive an adaptive variant of Hutch++, which outputs an estimate of the trace that is within some prescribed error tolerance with a controllable failure probability, while splitting the matrix-vector products in a near-optimal way among the two phases. For the special case of symmetric positive semi-definite matrix, we present another variant of Hutch++, called Nystr\"om++, which utilizes the so called Nystr\"om approximation and requires only one pass over the matrix, as compared to two passes with Hutch++. We extend the analysis of Hutch++ to Nystr\"om++. Numerical experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our two new algorithms.
Machine learning algorithms have recently been considered for many tasks in the field of wireless communications. Previously, we have proposed the use of a deep fully convolutional neural network (CNN) for receiver processing and shown it to provide considerable performance gains. In this study, we focus on machine learning algorithms for the transmitter. In particular, we consider beamforming and propose a CNN which, for a given uplink channel estimate as input, outputs downlink channel information to be used for beamforming. The CNN is trained in a supervised manner considering both uplink and downlink transmissions with a loss function that is based on UE receiver performance. The main task of the neural network is to predict the channel evolution between uplink and downlink slots, but it can also learn to handle inefficiencies and errors in the whole chain, including the actual beamforming phase. The provided numerical experiments demonstrate the improved beamforming performance.
Because of the superior feature representation ability of deep learning, various deep Click-Through Rate (CTR) models are deployed in the commercial systems by industrial companies. To achieve better performance, it is necessary to train the deep CTR models on huge volume of training data efficiently, which makes speeding up the training process an essential problem. Different from the models with dense training data, the training data for CTR models is usually high-dimensional and sparse. To transform the high-dimensional sparse input into low-dimensional dense real-value vectors, almost all deep CTR models adopt the embedding layer, which easily reaches hundreds of GB or even TB. Since a single GPU cannot afford to accommodate all the embedding parameters, when performing distributed training, it is not reasonable to conduct the data-parallelism only. Therefore, existing distributed training platforms for recommendation adopt model-parallelism. Specifically, they use CPU (Host) memory of servers to maintain and update the embedding parameters and utilize GPU worker to conduct forward and backward computations. Unfortunately, these platforms suffer from two bottlenecks: (1) the latency of pull \& push operations between Host and GPU; (2) parameters update and synchronization in the CPU servers. To address such bottlenecks, in this paper, we propose the ScaleFreeCTR: a MixCache-based distributed training system for CTR models. Specifically, in SFCTR, we also store huge embedding table in CPU but utilize GPU instead of CPU to conduct embedding synchronization efficiently. To reduce the latency of data transfer between both GPU-Host and GPU-GPU, the MixCache mechanism and Virtual Sparse Id operation are proposed. Comprehensive experiments and ablation studies are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of SFCTR.
