The demand for real-time Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) management has increased recently, since low-cost and modern sensors such as Particulate Matter (PM), Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Radon (Rn), among others, have been put forward with considerable accuracy. Although these low-cost sensors cannot be considered measurement instruments, they are very useful for a vast number of application domains, such as home automation, smart building management, IAQ management, risk exposure assessment, to name a few. This paper presents a literature review and a prospective analysis and discussion regarding Internet of Things (IoT) technologies adopted to deal with scenarios that present known indoor Radon gas problems. Specifically, the main requirements for developing IoT-enabled radon management solutions are reviewed. Thus, a traditional IoT architecture is described, its main components are analyzed and some of the most recent academic solutions are reviewed. Finally, novel approaches for deploying IoT radon management architectures are presented together with the most relevant open challenges. In this way, this article presents a holistic review of the past, present, and future of indoor radon management in order to provide guidelines for future designers and developers.
Multivariate time series forecasting is crucial for various applications, such as financial investment, energy management, weather forecasting, and traffic optimization. However, accurate forecasting is challenging due to two main factors. First, real-world time series often show heterogeneous temporal patterns caused by distribution shifts over time. Second, correlations among channels are complex and intertwined, making it hard to model the interactions among channels precisely and flexibly. In this study, we address these challenges by proposing a general framework called \textbf{DUET}, which introduces \underline{DU}al clustering on the temporal and channel dimensions to \underline{E}nhance multivariate \underline{T}ime series forecasting. First, we design a Temporal Clustering Module (TCM) that clusters time series into fine-grained distributions to handle heterogeneous temporal patterns. For different distribution clusters, we design various pattern extractors to capture their intrinsic temporal patterns, thus modeling the heterogeneity. Second, we introduce a novel Channel-Soft-Clustering strategy and design a Channel Clustering Module (CCM), which captures the relationships among channels in the frequency domain through metric learning and applies sparsification to mitigate the adverse effects of noisy channels. Finally, DUET combines TCM and CCM to incorporate both the temporal and channel dimensions. Extensive experiments on 25 real-world datasets from 10 application domains, demonstrate the state-of-the-art performance of DUET.
Stiffness estimation is crucial for delicate object manipulation in robotic and prosthetic hands but remains challenging due to dependence on force and displacement measurement and real-time sensory integration. This study presents a piezoelectric sensing framework for stiffness estimation at first contact during pinch grasps, addressing the limitations of traditional force-based methods. Inspired by human skin, a multimodal tactile sensor that captures vibrational and force data is developed and integrated into a prosthetic hand's fingertip. Machine learning models, including support vector machines and convolutional neural networks, demonstrate that vibrational signals within the critical 15 ms after first contact reliably encode stiffness, achieving classification accuracies up to 98.6% and regression errors as low as 2.39 Shore A on real-world objects of varying stiffness. Inference times of less than 1.5 ms are significantly faster than the average grasp closure time (16.65 ms in our dataset), enabling real-time stiffness estimation before the object is fully grasped. By leveraging the transient asymmetry in grasp dynamics, where one finger contacts the object before the others, this method enables early grasp modulation, enhancing safety and intuitiveness in prosthetic hands while offering broad applications in robotics.
Bipedal robots are gaining global recognition due to their potential applications and advancements in artificial intelligence, particularly through Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL). While DRL has significantly advanced bipedal locomotion, the development of a unified framework capable of handling a wide range of tasks remains an ongoing challenge. This survey systematically categorises, compares, and analyses existing DRL frameworks for bipedal locomotion, organising them into end-to-end and hierarchical control schemes. End-to-end frameworks are evaluated based on their learning approaches, while hierarchical frameworks are examined in terms of layered structures that integrate learning-based or traditional model-based methods. We provide a detailed evaluation of the composition, strengths, limitations, and capabilities of each framework. Additionally, this survey identifies key research gaps and proposes future directions aimed at creating a more integrated and efficient framework for bipedal locomotion, with wide-ranging applications in real-world environments.
Reinforcement Learning has revolutionized decision-making processes in dynamic environments, yet it often struggles with autonomously detecting and achieving goals without clear feedback signals. For example, in a Source Term Estimation problem, the lack of precise environmental information makes it challenging to provide clear feedback signals and to define and evaluate how the source's location is determined. To address this challenge, the Autonomous Goal Detection and Cessation (AGDC) module was developed, enhancing various RL algorithms by incorporating a self-feedback mechanism for autonomous goal detection and cessation upon task completion. Our method effectively identifies and ceases undefined goals by approximating the agent's belief, significantly enhancing the capabilities of RL algorithms in environments with limited feedback. To validate effectiveness of our approach, we integrated AGDC with deep Q-Network, proximal policy optimization, and deep deterministic policy gradient algorithms, and evaluated its performance on the Source Term Estimation problem. The experimental results showed that AGDC-enhanced RL algorithms significantly outperformed traditional statistical methods such as infotaxis, entrotaxis, and dual control for exploitation and exploration, as well as a non-statistical random action selection method. These improvements were evident in terms of success rate, mean traveled distance, and search time, highlighting AGDC's effectiveness and efficiency in complex, real-world scenarios.
Emotion AI is an emerging field of artificial intelligence intended to be utilized by organizations to manage and monitor employees emotional states supporting employee wellbeing and organizational goals. The current paper presents a case study that took place in a Finnish research institute in which 11 research participants were interviewed about their experiences of working in an Emotion AI environment. Our findings indicate that employees have a positive predisposition towards wellbeing monitoring in the workplace when benefits are perceived firsthand. Concerns however, manifest even in settings where there is existing familiarity with the technology how it operates and who is conducting the data collection, these are discussed in the findings. We additionally note that employee concerns can be mitigated via robust organizational policies transparency and open communication.
Most static program analyses depend on Call Graphs (CGs), including reachability of security vulnerabilities. Static CGs ensure soundness through over-approximation, which results in inflated sizes and imprecision. Recent research has employed machine learning (ML) models to prune false edges and enhance CG precision. However, these models require real-world programs with high test coverage to generalize effectively and the inference is expensive. In this paper, we present OriginPruner, a novel call graph pruning technique that leverages the method origin, which is where a method signature is first introduced within a class hierarchy. By incorporating insights from a localness analysis that investigated the scope of method interactions into our approach, OriginPruner confidently identifies and prunes edges related to these origin methods. Our key findings reveal that (1) dominant origin methods, such as Iterator.next, significantly impact CG sizes; (2) derivatives of these origin methods are primarily local, enabling safe pruning without affecting downstream inter-procedural analyses; (3) OriginPruner achieves a significant reduction in CG size while maintaining the soundness of CGs for security applications like vulnerability propagation analysis; and (4) OriginPruner introduces minimal computational overhead. These findings underscore the potential of leveraging domain knowledge about the type system for more effective CG pruning, offering a promising direction for future work in static program analysis.
As a primary means of information acquisition, information retrieval (IR) systems, such as search engines, have integrated themselves into our daily lives. These systems also serve as components of dialogue, question-answering, and recommender systems. The trajectory of IR has evolved dynamically from its origins in term-based methods to its integration with advanced neural models. While the neural models excel at capturing complex contextual signals and semantic nuances, thereby reshaping the IR landscape, they still face challenges such as data scarcity, interpretability, and the generation of contextually plausible yet potentially inaccurate responses. This evolution requires a combination of both traditional methods (such as term-based sparse retrieval methods with rapid response) and modern neural architectures (such as language models with powerful language understanding capacity). Meanwhile, the emergence of large language models (LLMs), typified by ChatGPT and GPT-4, has revolutionized natural language processing due to their remarkable language understanding, generation, generalization, and reasoning abilities. Consequently, recent research has sought to leverage LLMs to improve IR systems. Given the rapid evolution of this research trajectory, it is necessary to consolidate existing methodologies and provide nuanced insights through a comprehensive overview. In this survey, we delve into the confluence of LLMs and IR systems, including crucial aspects such as query rewriters, retrievers, rerankers, and readers. Additionally, we explore promising directions within this expanding field.
Face recognition technology has advanced significantly in recent years due largely to the availability of large and increasingly complex training datasets for use in deep learning models. These datasets, however, typically comprise images scraped from news sites or social media platforms and, therefore, have limited utility in more advanced security, forensics, and military applications. These applications require lower resolution, longer ranges, and elevated viewpoints. To meet these critical needs, we collected and curated the first and second subsets of a large multi-modal biometric dataset designed for use in the research and development (R&D) of biometric recognition technologies under extremely challenging conditions. Thus far, the dataset includes more than 350,000 still images and over 1,300 hours of video footage of approximately 1,000 subjects. To collect this data, we used Nikon DSLR cameras, a variety of commercial surveillance cameras, specialized long-rage R&D cameras, and Group 1 and Group 2 UAV platforms. The goal is to support the development of algorithms capable of accurately recognizing people at ranges up to 1,000 m and from high angles of elevation. These advances will include improvements to the state of the art in face recognition and will support new research in the area of whole-body recognition using methods based on gait and anthropometry. This paper describes methods used to collect and curate the dataset, and the dataset's characteristics at the current stage.
Few-shot Knowledge Graph (KG) completion is a focus of current research, where each task aims at querying unseen facts of a relation given its few-shot reference entity pairs. Recent attempts solve this problem by learning static representations of entities and references, ignoring their dynamic properties, i.e., entities may exhibit diverse roles within task relations, and references may make different contributions to queries. This work proposes an adaptive attentional network for few-shot KG completion by learning adaptive entity and reference representations. Specifically, entities are modeled by an adaptive neighbor encoder to discern their task-oriented roles, while references are modeled by an adaptive query-aware aggregator to differentiate their contributions. Through the attention mechanism, both entities and references can capture their fine-grained semantic meanings, and thus render more expressive representations. This will be more predictive for knowledge acquisition in the few-shot scenario. Evaluation in link prediction on two public datasets shows that our approach achieves new state-of-the-art results with different few-shot sizes.
Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have gained significant traction in the field of machine learning, particularly due to their high accuracy in visual recognition. Recent works have pushed the performance of GPU implementations of CNNs to significantly improve their classification and training times. With these improvements, many frameworks have become available for implementing CNNs on both CPUs and GPUs, with no support for FPGA implementations. In this work we present a modified version of the popular CNN framework Caffe, with FPGA support. This allows for classification using CNN models and specialized FPGA implementations with the flexibility of reprogramming the device when necessary, seamless memory transactions between host and device, simple-to-use test benches, and the ability to create pipelined layer implementations. To validate the framework, we use the Xilinx SDAccel environment to implement an FPGA-based Winograd convolution engine and show that the FPGA layer can be used alongside other layers running on a host processor to run several popular CNNs (AlexNet, GoogleNet, VGG A, Overfeat). The results show that our framework achieves 50 GFLOPS across 3x3 convolutions in the benchmarks. This is achieved within a practical framework, which will aid in future development of FPGA-based CNNs.
