We consider the problem of solving the Min-Sum Submodular Cover problem using local search. The Min-Sum Submodular Cover problem generalizes the NP-complete Min-Sum Set Cover problem, replacing the input set cover instance with a monotone submodular set function. A simple greedy algorithm achieves an approximation factor of 4, which is tight unless P=NP [Streeter and Golovin, NeurIPS, 2008]. We complement the greedy algorithm with analysis of a local search algorithm. Building on work of Munagala et al. [ICDT, 2005], we show that, using simple initialization, a straightforward local search algorithm achieves a $(4+\epsilon)$-approximate solution in time $O(n^3\log(n/\epsilon))$, provided that the monotone submodular set function is also second-order supermodular. Second-order supermodularity has been shown to hold for a number of submodular functions of practical interest, including functions associated with set cover, matching, and facility location. We present experiments on two special cases of Min-Sum Submodular Cover and find that the local search algorithm can outperform the greedy algorithm on small data sets.

We consider the problem of policy transfer between two Markov Decision Processes (MDPs). We introduce a lemma based on existing theoretical results in reinforcement learning to measure the relativity gap between two arbitrary MDPs, that is the difference between any two cumulative expected returns defined on different policies and environment dynamics. Based on this lemma, we propose two new algorithms referred to as Relative Policy Optimization (RPO) and Relative Transition Optimization (RTO), which offer fast policy transfer and dynamics modelling, respectively. RPO transfers the policy evaluated in one environment to maximize the return in another, while RTO updates the parameterized dynamics model to reduce the gap between the dynamics of the two environments. Integrating the two algorithms results in the complete Relative Policy-Transition Optimization (RPTO) algorithm, in which the policy interacts with the two environments simultaneously, such that data collections from two environments, policy and transition updates are completed in one closed loop to form a principled learning framework for policy transfer. We demonstrate the effectiveness of RPTO on a set of MuJoCo continuous control tasks by creating policy transfer problems via variant dynamics.

The Skolem problem is a long-standing open problem in linear dynamical systems: can a linear recurrence sequence (LRS) ever reach 0 from a given initial configuration? Similarly, the positivity problem asks whether the LRS stays positive from an initial configuration. Deciding Skolem (or positivity) has been open for half a century: the best known decidability results are for LRS with special properties (e.g., low order recurrences). But these problems are easier for "uninitialized" variants, where the initial configuration is not fixed but can vary arbitrarily: checking if there is an initial configuration from which the LRS stays positive can be decided in polynomial time (Tiwari in 2004, Braverman in 2006). In this paper, we consider problems that lie between the initialized and uninitialized variant. More precisely, we ask if 0 (resp. negative numbers) can be avoided from every initial configuration in a neighborhood of a given initial configuration. This can be considered as a robust variant of the Skolem (resp. positivity) problem. We show that these problems lie at the frontier of decidability: if the neighbourhood is given as part of the input, then robust Skolem and robust positivity are Diophantine hard, i.e., solving either would entail major breakthrough in Diophantine approximations, as happens for (non-robust) positivity. However, if one asks whether such a neighbourhood exists, then the problems turn out to be decidable with PSPACE complexity. Our techniques also allow us to tackle robustness for ultimate positivity, which asks whether there is a bound on the number of steps after which the LRS remains positive. There are two variants depending on whether we ask for a "uniform" bound on this number of steps. For the non-uniform variant, when the neighbourhood is open, the problem turns out to be tractable, even when the neighbourhood is given as input.

We revisit the Stochastic Score Classification (SSC) problem introduced by Gkenosis et al. (ESA 2018): We are given $n$ tests. Each test $j$ can be conducted at cost $c_j$, and it succeeds independently with probability $p_j$. Further, a partition of the (integer) interval $\{0,\dots,n\}$ into $B$ smaller intervals is known. The goal is to conduct tests so as to determine that interval from the partition in which the number of successful tests lies while minimizing the expected cost. Ghuge et al. (IPCO 2022) recently showed that a polynomial-time constant-factor approximation algorithm exists. We show that interweaving the two strategies that order tests increasingly by their $c_j/p_j$ and $c_j/(1-p_j)$ ratios, respectively, -- as already proposed by Gkensosis et al. for a special case -- yields a small approximation ratio. We also show that the approximation ratio can be slightly decreased from $6$ to $3+2\sqrt{2}\approx 5.828$ by adding in a third strategy that simply orders tests increasingly by their costs. The similar analyses for both algorithms are nontrivial but arguably clean. Finally, we complement the implied upper bound of $3+2\sqrt{2}$ on the adaptivity gap with a lower bound of $3/2$. Since the lower-bound instance is a so-called unit-cost $k$-of-$n$ instance, we settle the adaptivity gap in this case.

Various static analysis problems are reformulated as instances of the Context-Free Language Reachability (CFL-r) problem. One promising way to make solving CFL-r more practical for large-scale interprocedural graphs is to reduce CFL-r to linear algebra operations on sparse matrices, as they are efficiently executed on modern hardware. In this work, we present five optimizations for a matrix-based CFL-r algorithm that utilize the specific properties of both the underlying semiring and the widely-used linear algebra library SuiteSparse:GraphBlas. Our experimental results show that these optimizations result in orders of magnitude speedup, with the optimized matrix-based CFL-r algorithm consistently outperforming state-of-the-art CFL-r solvers across four considered static analyses.

We systematically analyze the accuracy of Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) in approximating solutions to the critical Surface Quasi-Geostrophic (SQG) equation on two-dimensional periodic boxes. The critical SQG equation involves advection and diffusion described by nonlocal periodic operators, posing challenges for neural network-based methods that do not commonly exhibit periodic boundary conditions. In this paper, we present a novel approximation of these operators using their nonperiodic analogs based on singular integral representation formulas and use it to perform error estimates. This idea can be generalized to a larger class of nonlocal partial differential equations whose solutions satisfy prescribed boundary conditions, thereby initiating a new PINNs theory for equations with nonlocalities.

The Vision Transformer (ViT) demonstrates exceptional performance in various computer vision tasks. Attention is crucial for ViT to capture complex wide-ranging relationships among image patches, allowing the model to weigh the importance of image patches and aiding our understanding of the decision-making process. However, when utilizing the attention of ViT as evidence in high-stakes decision-making tasks such as medical diagnostics, a challenge arises due to the potential of attention mechanisms erroneously focusing on irrelevant regions. In this study, we propose a statistical test for ViT's attentions, enabling us to use the attentions as reliable quantitative evidence indicators for ViT's decision-making with a rigorously controlled error rate. Using the framework called selective inference, we quantify the statistical significance of attentions in the form of p-values, which enables the theoretically grounded quantification of the false positive detection probability of attentions. We demonstrate the validity and the effectiveness of the proposed method through numerical experiments and applications to brain image diagnoses.

Many real-world problems can be efficiently modeled as Mixed Integer Programs (MIPs) and solved with the Branch-and-Bound method. Prior work has shown the existence of MIP backdoors, small sets of variables such that prioritizing branching on them when possible leads to faster running times. However, finding high-quality backdoors that improve running times remains an open question. Previous work learns to estimate the relative solver speed of randomly sampled backdoors through ranking and then decide whether to use it. In this paper, we utilize the Monte-Carlo tree search method to collect backdoors for training, rather than relying on random sampling, and adapt a contrastive learning framework to train a Graph Attention Network model to predict backdoors. Our method, evaluated on four common MIP problem domains, demonstrates performance improvements over both Gurobi and previous models.

Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) emerged as a viable computing allocation method that facilitates offloading tasks to edge servers for efficient processing. The integration of MEC with 5G, referred to as 5G-MEC, provides real-time processing and data-driven decision-making in close proximity to the user. The 5G-MEC has gained significant recognition in task offloading as an essential tool for applications that require low delay. Nevertheless, few studies consider the dropped task ratio metric. Disregarding this metric might possibly undermine system efficiency. In this paper, the dropped task ratio and delay has been minimized in a realistic 5G-MEC task offloading scenario implemented in NS3. We utilize Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) and Genetic Algorithm (GA) to optimize delay and dropped task ratio. We examined the effect of the number of tasks and users on the dropped task ratio and delay. Compared to two traditional offloading schemes, First Come First Serve (FCFS) and Shortest Task First (STF), our proposed method effectively works in 5G-MEC task offloading scenario. For MILP, the dropped task ratio and delay has been minimized by 20% and 2ms compared to GA.

Text Classification is the most essential and fundamental problem in Natural Language Processing. While numerous recent text classification models applied the sequential deep learning technique, graph neural network-based models can directly deal with complex structured text data and exploit global information. Many real text classification applications can be naturally cast into a graph, which captures words, documents, and corpus global features. In this survey, we bring the coverage of methods up to 2023, including corpus-level and document-level graph neural networks. We discuss each of these methods in detail, dealing with the graph construction mechanisms and the graph-based learning process. As well as the technological survey, we look at issues behind and future directions addressed in text classification using graph neural networks. We also cover datasets, evaluation metrics, and experiment design and present a summary of published performance on the publicly available benchmarks. Note that we present a comprehensive comparison between different techniques and identify the pros and cons of various evaluation metrics in this survey.

The problem of Multiple Object Tracking (MOT) consists in following the trajectory of different objects in a sequence, usually a video. In recent years, with the rise of Deep Learning, the algorithms that provide a solution to this problem have benefited from the representational power of deep models. This paper provides a comprehensive survey on works that employ Deep Learning models to solve the task of MOT on single-camera videos. Four main steps in MOT algorithms are identified, and an in-depth review of how Deep Learning was employed in each one of these stages is presented. A complete experimental comparison of the presented works on the three MOTChallenge datasets is also provided, identifying a number of similarities among the top-performing methods and presenting some possible future research directions.
