LoraWAN has turned out to be one of the most successful frameworks in IoT devices. Real world scenarios demand the use of such networks along with a robust stream processing application layer. To maintain the exactly once processing semantics one must ensure that we have proper ways to proactively detect message drops and handle the same. An important use case where stream processing plays a crucial role is joining various data streams that are transmitted via gateways connected to edge devices which are related to each other as part of some common business requirement. LoraWAN supports connectivity to multiple gateways for edge devices and by virtue of its different device classes, the network can send and receive messages in an effective way that conserves battery power as well as network bandwidth. Rather than relying on explicit acknowledgements for the transmitted messages we take the advantage of these characteristics of the devices to detect , handle missing messages and finally process them.

During the inversion of discrete linear systems, noise in data can be amplified and result in meaningless solutions. To combat this effect, characteristics of solutions that are considered desirable are mathematically implemented during inversion, which is a process called regularization. The influence of provided prior information is controlled by non-negative regularization parameter(s). There are a number of methods used to select appropriate regularization parameters, as well as a number of methods used for inversion. In this paper, we consider the unbiased risk estimator, generalized cross validation, and the discrepancy principle as the means of selecting regularization parameters. When multiple data sets describing the same physical phenomena are available, the use of multiple regularization parameters can enhance results. Here we demonstrate that it is possible to learn multiple parameter regularization parameters using regularization parameter estimators that are modified to handle multiple parameters and multiple data. The results demonstrate that these modified methods, which do not require the use of true data for learning regularization parameters, are effective and efficient, and perform comparably to methods based on true data for learning the relevant parameters.

Future cellular networks are expected to support new communication paradigms such as machine-type communication (MTC) services along with human-type communication (HTC) services. This requires base stations to serve a large number of devices in relatively short channel coherence intervals which renders allocation of orthogonal pilot sequence per-device approaches impractical. Furthermore, the stringent power constraints, place-and-play type connectivity and various data rate requirements of MTC devices make it impossible for the traditional cellular architecture to accommodate MTC and HTC services together. Massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MaMIMO) technology has the potential to allow the coexistence of HTC and MTC services, thanks to its inherent spatial multiplexing properties and low transmission power requirements. In this work, we investigate the performance of a single cell under a shared physical channel assumption for MTC and HTC services and propose a novel scheme for sharing the time-frequency resources. The analysis reveals that MaMIMO can significantly enhance the performance of such a setup and allow the inclusion of MTC services into the cellular networks without requiring additional resources.

Privacy concerns have long been expressed around smart devices, and the concerns around Android apps have been studied by many past works. Over the past 10 years, we have crawled and scraped data for almost 1.9 million apps, and also stored the APKs for 135,536 of them. In this paper, we examine the trends in how Android apps have changed over time with respect to privacy and look at it from two perspectives: (1) how privacy behavior in apps have changed as they are updated over time, (2) how these changes can be accounted for when comparing third-party libraries and the app's own internals. To study this, we examine the adoption of HTTPS, whether apps scan the device for other installed apps, the use of permissions for privacy-sensitive data, and the use of unique identifiers. We find that privacy-related behavior has improved with time as apps continue to receive updates, and that the third-party libraries used by apps are responsible for more issues with privacy. However, we observe that in the current state of Android apps, there has not been enough of an improvement in terms of privacy and many issues still need to be addressed.

Heterogeneous tabular data are the most commonly used form of data and are essential for numerous critical and computationally demanding applications. On homogeneous data sets, deep neural networks have repeatedly shown excellent performance and have therefore been widely adopted. However, their application to modeling tabular data (inference or generation) remains highly challenging. This work provides an overview of state-of-the-art deep learning methods for tabular data. We start by categorizing them into three groups: data transformations, specialized architectures, and regularization models. We then provide a comprehensive overview of the main approaches in each group. A discussion of deep learning approaches for generating tabular data is complemented by strategies for explaining deep models on tabular data. Our primary contribution is to address the main research streams and existing methodologies in this area, while highlighting relevant challenges and open research questions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first in-depth look at deep learning approaches for tabular data. This work can serve as a valuable starting point and guide for researchers and practitioners interested in deep learning with tabular data.

There has been a surge of interest in continual learning and federated learning, both of which are important in deep neural networks in real-world scenarios. Yet little research has been done regarding the scenario where each client learns on a sequence of tasks from a private local data stream. This problem of federated continual learning poses new challenges to continual learning, such as utilizing knowledge from other clients, while preventing interference from irrelevant knowledge. To resolve these issues, we propose a novel federated continual learning framework, Federated Weighted Inter-client Transfer (FedWeIT), which decomposes the network weights into global federated parameters and sparse task-specific parameters, and each client receives selective knowledge from other clients by taking a weighted combination of their task-specific parameters. FedWeIT minimizes interference between incompatible tasks, and also allows positive knowledge transfer across clients during learning. We validate our \emph{FedWeIT}~against existing federated learning and continual learning methods under varying degrees of task similarity across clients, and our model significantly outperforms them with a large reduction in the communication cost.

Stream processing has been an active research field for more than 20 years, but it is now witnessing its prime time due to recent successful efforts by the research community and numerous worldwide open-source communities. This survey provides a comprehensive overview of fundamental aspects of stream processing systems and their evolution in the functional areas of out-of-order data management, state management, fault tolerance, high availability, load management, elasticity, and reconfiguration. We review noteworthy past research findings, outline the similarities and differences between early ('00-'10) and modern ('11-'18) streaming systems, and discuss recent trends and open problems.

Deep learning has been shown successful in a number of domains, ranging from acoustics, images to natural language processing. However, applying deep learning to the ubiquitous graph data is non-trivial because of the unique characteristics of graphs. Recently, a significant amount of research efforts have been devoted to this area, greatly advancing graph analyzing techniques. In this survey, we comprehensively review different kinds of deep learning methods applied to graphs. We divide existing methods into three main categories: semi-supervised methods including Graph Neural Networks and Graph Convolutional Networks, unsupervised methods including Graph Autoencoders, and recent advancements including Graph Recurrent Neural Networks and Graph Reinforcement Learning. We then provide a comprehensive overview of these methods in a systematic manner following their history of developments. We also analyze the differences of these methods and how to composite different architectures. Finally, we briefly outline their applications and discuss potential future directions.

In recent years with the rise of Cloud Computing (CC), many companies providing services in the cloud, are empowered a new series of services to their catalog, such as data mining (DM) and data processing, taking advantage of the vast computing resources available to them. Different service definition proposals have been proposed to address the problem of describing services in CC in a comprehensive way. Bearing in mind that each provider has its own definition of the logic of its services, and specifically of DM services, it should be pointed out that the possibility of describing services in a flexible way between providers is fundamental in order to maintain the usability and portability of this type of CC services. The use of semantic technologies based on the proposal offered by Linked Data (LD) for the definition of services, allows the design and modelling of DM services, achieving a high degree of interoperability. In this article a schema for the definition of DM services on CC is presented, in addition are considered all key aspects of service in CC, such as prices, interfaces, Software Level Agreement, instances or workflow of experimentation, among others. The proposal presented is based on LD, so that it reuses other schemata obtaining a best definition of the service. For the validation of the schema, a series of DM services have been created where some of the best known algorithms such as \textit{Random Forest} or \textit{KMeans} are modeled as services.

In this paper, we present a new method for detecting road users in an urban environment which leads to an improvement in multiple object tracking. Our method takes as an input a foreground image and improves the object detection and segmentation. This new image can be used as an input to trackers that use foreground blobs from background subtraction. The first step is to create foreground images for all the frames in an urban video. Then, starting from the original blobs of the foreground image, we merge the blobs that are close to one another and that have similar optical flow. The next step is extracting the edges of the different objects to detect multiple objects that might be very close (and be merged in the same blob) and to adjust the size of the original blobs. At the same time, we use the optical flow to detect occlusion of objects that are moving in opposite directions. Finally, we make a decision on which information we keep in order to construct a new foreground image with blobs that can be used for tracking. The system is validated on four videos of an urban traffic dataset. Our method improves the recall and precision metrics for the object detection task compared to the vanilla background subtraction method and improves the CLEAR MOT metrics in the tracking tasks for most videos.

In multi-task learning, a learner is given a collection of prediction tasks and needs to solve all of them. In contrast to previous work, which required that annotated training data is available for all tasks, we consider a new setting, in which for some tasks, potentially most of them, only unlabeled training data is provided. Consequently, to solve all tasks, information must be transferred between tasks with labels and tasks without labels. Focusing on an instance-based transfer method we analyze two variants of this setting: when the set of labeled tasks is fixed, and when it can be actively selected by the learner. We state and prove a generalization bound that covers both scenarios and derive from it an algorithm for making the choice of labeled tasks (in the active case) and for transferring information between the tasks in a principled way. We also illustrate the effectiveness of the algorithm by experiments on synthetic and real data.
