Since its introduction in 2019, the whole end-to-end neural diarization (EEND) line of work has been addressing speaker diarization as a frame-wise multi-label classification problem with permutation-invariant training. Despite EEND showing great promise, a few recent works took a step back and studied the possible combination of (local) supervised EEND diarization with (global) unsupervised clustering. Yet, these hybrid contributions did not question the original multi-label formulation. We propose to switch from multi-label (where any two speakers can be active at the same time) to powerset multi-class classification (where dedicated classes are assigned to pairs of overlapping speakers). Through extensive experiments on 9 different benchmarks, we show that this formulation leads to significantly better performance (mostly on overlapping speech) and robustness to domain mismatch, while eliminating the detection threshold hyperparameter, critical for the multi-label formulation.

As a surrogate for computationally intensive meso-scale simulation of woven composites, this article presents Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) models. Leveraging the power of transfer learning, the initialization challenges and sparse data issues inherent in cyclic shear strain loads are addressed in the RNN models. A mean-field model generates a comprehensive data set representing elasto-plastic behavior. In simulations, arbitrary six-dimensional strain histories are used to predict stresses under random walking as the source task and cyclic loading conditions as the target task. Incorporating sub-scale properties enhances RNN versatility. In order to achieve accurate predictions, the model uses a grid search method to tune network architecture and hyper-parameter configurations. The results of this study demonstrate that transfer learning can be used to effectively adapt the RNN to varying strain conditions, which establishes its potential as a useful tool for modeling path-dependent responses in woven composites.

We present a novel clustering algorithm, visClust, that is based on lower dimensional data representations and visual interpretation. Thereto, we design a transformation that allows the data to be represented by a binary integer array enabling the use of image processing methods to select a partition. Qualitative and quantitative analyses measured in accuracy and an adjusted Rand-Index show that the algorithm performs well while requiring low runtime and RAM. We compare the results to 6 state-of-the-art algorithms with available code, confirming the quality of visClust by superior performance in most experiments. Moreover, the algorithm asks for just one obligatory input parameter while allowing optimization via optional parameters. The code is made available on GitHub and straightforward to use.

The goal of the study was to evaluate the impact of different optimization levels and various optimization strategies on power consumption. In a series of experiments, it was established that the average power consumption tends to peak for the programs with optimized source code. The articles also describes the impact of changing computer architecture on power consumption graphs. The relationships between the average and median values of power consumption by example programs are considered. The possibility of creating program energy consumption profile for a parallel program is shown.

This research investigates the numerical approximation of the two-dimensional convection-dominated singularly perturbed problem on square, circular, and elliptic domains. Singularly perturbed boundary value problems present a significant challenge due to the presence of sharp boundary layers in their solutions. Additionally, the considered domain exhibits characteristic points, giving rise to a degenerate boundary layer problem. The stiffness of the problem is attributed to the sharp singular layers, which can result in substantial computational errors if not appropriately addressed. Traditional numerical methods typically require extensive mesh refinements near the boundary to achieve accurate solutions, which can be computationally expensive. To address the challenges posed by singularly perturbed problems, we employ physics-informed neural networks (PINNs). However, PINNs may struggle with rapidly varying singularly perturbed solutions over a small domain region, leading to inadequate resolution and potentially inaccurate or unstable results. To overcome this limitation, we introduce a semi-analytic method that augments PINNs with singular layers or corrector functions. Through our numerical experiments, we demonstrate significant improvements in both accuracy and stability, thus demonstrating the effectiveness of our proposed approach.

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) enables functional imaging of deep brain structures, but the bulk and weight of current systems preclude their use during many natural human activities, such as locomotion. The proposed long-term solution is to construct a robotic system that can support an imaging system surrounding the subject's head, and then move the system to accommodate natural motion. This requires a system to measure the motion of the head with respect to the imaging ring, for use by both the robotic system and the image reconstruction software. We report here the design and experimental evaluation of a parallel string encoder mechanism for sensing this motion. Our preliminary results indicate that the measurement system may achieve accuracy within 0.5 mm, especially for small motions, with improved accuracy possible through kinematic calibration.

The prediction accuracy of machine learning methods is steadily increasing, but the calibration of their uncertainty predictions poses a significant challenge. Numerous works focus on obtaining well-calibrated predictive models, but less is known about reliably assessing model calibration. This limits our ability to know when algorithms for improving calibration have a real effect, and when their improvements are merely artifacts due to random noise in finite datasets. In this work, we consider detecting mis-calibration of predictive models using a finite validation dataset as a hypothesis testing problem. The null hypothesis is that the predictive model is calibrated, while the alternative hypothesis is that the deviation from calibration is sufficiently large. We find that detecting mis-calibration is only possible when the conditional probabilities of the classes are sufficiently smooth functions of the predictions. When the conditional class probabilities are H\"older continuous, we propose T-Cal, a minimax optimal test for calibration based on a debiased plug-in estimator of the $\ell_2$-Expected Calibration Error (ECE). We further propose Adaptive T-Cal, a version that is adaptive to unknown smoothness. We verify our theoretical findings with a broad range of experiments, including with several popular deep neural net architectures and several standard post-hoc calibration methods. T-Cal is a practical general-purpose tool, which -- combined with classical tests for discrete-valued predictors -- can be used to test the calibration of virtually any probabilistic classification method.

Many real-world networks exhibit the phenomenon of edge clustering, which is typically measured by the average clustering coefficient. Recently, an alternative measure, the average closure coefficient, is proposed to quantify local clustering. It is shown that the average closure coefficient possesses a number of useful properties and can capture complementary information missed by the classical average clustering coefficient. In this paper, we study the asymptotic distribution of the average closure coefficient of a heterogeneous Erd\"{o}s-R\'{e}nyi random graph. We prove that the standardized average closure coefficient converges in distribution to the standard normal distribution. In the Erd\"{o}s-R\'{e}nyi random graph, the variance of the average closure coefficient exhibits the same phase transition phenomenon as the average clustering coefficient.

Probabilistic variants of Model Order Reduction (MOR) methods have recently emerged for improving stability and computational performance of classical approaches. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic Reduced Basis Method (RBM) for the approximation of a family of parameter-dependent functions. It relies on a probabilistic greedy algorithm with an error indicator that can be written as an expectation of some parameter-dependent random variable. Practical algorithms relying on Monte Carlo estimates of this error indicator are discussed. In particular, when using Probably Approximately Correct (PAC) bandit algorithm, the resulting procedure is proven to be a weak greedy algorithm with high probability. Intended applications concern the approximation of a parameter-dependent family of functions for which we only have access to (noisy) pointwise evaluations. As a particular application, we consider the approximation of solution manifolds of linear parameter-dependent partial differential equations with a probabilistic interpretation through the Feynman-Kac formula.

We note a fact that stiff systems or differential equations that have highly oscillatory solutions cannot be solved efficiently using conventional methods. In this paper, we study two new classes of exponential Runge-Kutta (ERK) integrators for efficiently solving stiff systems or highly oscillatory problems. We first present a novel class of explicit modified version of exponential Runge-Kutta (MVERK) methods based on the order conditions. Furthermore, we consider a class of explicit simplified version of exponential Runge-Kutta (SVERK) methods. Numerical results demonstrate the high efficiency of the explicit MVERK integrators and SVERK methods derived in this paper compared with the well-known explicit ERK integrators for stiff systems or highly oscillatory problems in the literature.

In large-scale systems there are fundamental challenges when centralised techniques are used for task allocation. The number of interactions is limited by resource constraints such as on computation, storage, and network communication. We can increase scalability by implementing the system as a distributed task-allocation system, sharing tasks across many agents. However, this also increases the resource cost of communications and synchronisation, and is difficult to scale. In this paper we present four algorithms to solve these problems. The combination of these algorithms enable each agent to improve their task allocation strategy through reinforcement learning, while changing how much they explore the system in response to how optimal they believe their current strategy is, given their past experience. We focus on distributed agent systems where the agents' behaviours are constrained by resource usage limits, limiting agents to local rather than system-wide knowledge. We evaluate these algorithms in a simulated environment where agents are given a task composed of multiple subtasks that must be allocated to other agents with differing capabilities, to then carry out those tasks. We also simulate real-life system effects such as networking instability. Our solution is shown to solve the task allocation problem to 6.7% of the theoretical optimal within the system configurations considered. It provides 5x better performance recovery over no-knowledge retention approaches when system connectivity is impacted, and is tested against systems up to 100 agents with less than a 9% impact on the algorithms' performance.
