We deal with a long-standing problem about how to design an energy-stable numerical scheme for solving the motion of a closed curve under {\sl anisotropic surface diffusion} with a general anisotropic surface energy $\gamma(\boldsymbol{n})$ in two dimensions, where $\boldsymbol{n}$ is the outward unit normal vector. By introducing a novel symmetric positive definite surface energy matrix $Z_k(\boldsymbol{n})$ depending on the Cahn-Hoffman $\boldsymbol{\xi}$-vector and a stabilizing function $k(\boldsymbol{n})$, we first reformulate the anisotropic surface diffusion into a conservative form and then derive a new symmetrized variational formulation for the anisotropic surface diffusion with weakly or strongly anisotropic surface energies. A semi-discretization in space for the symmetrized variational formulation is proposed and its area (or mass) conservation and energy dissipation are proved. The semi-discretization is then discretized in time by either an implicit structural-preserving scheme (SP-PFEM) which preserves the area in the discretized level or a semi-implicit energy-stable method (ES-PFEM) which needs only solve a linear system at each time step. Under a relatively simple and mild condition on $\gamma(\boldsymbol{n})$, we show that both SP-PFEM and ES-PFEM are unconditionally energy-stable for almost all anisotropic surface energies $\gamma(\boldsymbol{n})$ arising in practical applications. Specifically, for several commonly-used anisotropic surface energies, we construct $Z_k(\boldsymbol{n})$ explicitly. Finally, extensive numerical results are reported to demonstrate the high performance of the proposed numerical schemes.

In this paper, an upwind GFDM is developed for the coupled heat and mass transfer problems in porous media. GFDM is a meshless method that can obtain the difference schemes of spatial derivatives by using Taylor expansion in local node influence domains and the weighted least squares method. The first-order single-point upstream scheme in the FDM/FVM-based reservoir simulator is introduced to GFDM to form the upwind GFDM, based on which, a sequential coupled discrete scheme of the pressure diffusion equation and the heat convection-conduction equation is solved to obtain pressure and temperature profiles. This paper demonstrates that this method can be used to obtain the meshless solution of the convection-diffusion equation with a stable upwind effect. For porous flow problems, the upwind GFDM is more practical and stable than the method of manually adjusting the influence domain based on the prior information of the flow field to achieve the upwind effect. Two types of calculation errors are analyzed, and three numerical examples are implemented to illustrate the good calculation accuracy and convergence of the upwind GFDM for heat and mass transfer problems in porous media, and indicate the increase of the radius of the node influence domain will increase the calculation error of temperature profiles. Overall, the upwind GFDM discretizes the computational domain using only a point cloud that is generated with much less topological constraints than the generated mesh, but achieves good computational performance as the mesh-based approaches, and therefore has great potential to be developed as a general-purpose numerical simulator for various porous flow problems in domains with complex geometry.

Two novel parallel Newton-Krylov Balancing Domain Decomposition by Constraints (BDDC) and Dual-Primal Finite Element Tearing and Interconnecting (FETI-DP) solvers are here constructed, analyzed and tested numerically for implicit time discretizations of the three-dimensional Bidomain system of equations. This model represents the most advanced mathematical description of the cardiac bioelectrical activity and it consists of a degenerate system of two non-linear reaction-diffusion partial differential equations (PDEs), coupled with a stiff system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). A finite element discretization in space and a segregated implicit discretization in time, based on decoupling the PDEs from the ODEs, yields at each time step the solution of a non-linear algebraic system. The Jacobian linear system at each Newton iteration is solved by a Krylov method, accelerated by BDDC or FETI-DP preconditioners, both augmented with the recently introduced {\em deluxe} scaling of the dual variables. A polylogarithmic convergence rate bound is proven for the resulting parallel Bidomain solvers. Extensive numerical experiments on linux clusters up to two thousands processors confirm the theoretical estimates, showing that the proposed parallel solvers are scalable and quasi-optimal.

This work presents a numerical formulation to model isotropic viscoelastic material behavior for membranes and thin shells. The surface and the shell theory are formulated within a curvilinear coordinate system, which allows the representation of general surfaces and deformations. The kinematics follow from Kirchhoff-Love theory and the discretization makes use of isogeometric shape functions. A multiplicative split of the surface deformation gradient is employed, such that an intermediate surface configuration is introduced. The surface metric and curvature of this intermediate configuration follow from the solution of nonlinear evolution laws - ordinary differential equations (ODEs) - that stem from a generalized viscoelastic solid model. The evolution laws are integrated numerically with the implicit Euler scheme and linearized within the Newton-Raphson scheme of the nonlinear finite element framework. The implementation of surface and bending viscosity is verified with the help of analytical solutions and shows ideal convergence behavior. The chosen numerical examples capture large deformations and typical viscoelasticity behavior, such as creep, relaxation, and strain rate dependence. It is shown that the proposed formulation can also be straightforwardly applied to model boundary viscoelasticity of 3D bodies.

In this work, we introduce a novel approach to formulating an artificial viscosity for shock capturing in nonlinear hyperbolic systems by utilizing the property that the solutions of hyperbolic conservation laws are not reversible in time in the vicinity of shocks. The proposed approach does not require any additional governing equations or a priori knowledge of the hyperbolic system in question, is independent of the mesh and approximation order, and requires the use of only one tunable parameter. The primary novelty is that the resulting artificial viscosity is unique for each component of the conservation law which is advantageous for systems in which some components exhibit discontinuities while others do not. The efficacy of the method is shown in numerical experiments of multi-dimensional hyperbolic conservation laws such as nonlinear transport, Euler equations, and ideal magnetohydrodynamics using a high-order discontinuous spectral element method on unstructured grids.

In this paper we propose a methodology to accelerate the resolution of the so-called "Sorted L-One Penalized Estimation" (SLOPE) problem. Our method leverages the concept of "safe screening", well-studied in the literature for \textit{group-separable} sparsity-inducing norms, and aims at identifying the zeros in the solution of SLOPE. More specifically, we derive a set of \(\tfrac{n(n+1)}{2}\) inequalities for each element of the \(n\)-dimensional primal vector and prove that the latter can be safely screened if some subsets of these inequalities are verified. We propose moreover an efficient algorithm to jointly apply the proposed procedure to all the primal variables. Our procedure has a complexity \(\mathcal{O}(n\log n + LT)\) where \(T\leq n\) is a problem-dependent constant and \(L\) is the number of zeros identified by the tests. Numerical experiments confirm that, for a prescribed computational budget, the proposed methodology leads to significant improvements of the solving precision.

In this article we suggest two discretization methods based on isogeometric analysis (IGA) for planar linear elasticity. On the one hand, we apply the well-known ansatz of weakly imposed symmetry for the stress tensor and obtain a well-posed mixed formulation. Such modified mixed problems have been already studied by different authors. But we concentrate on the exploitation of IGA results to handle also curved boundary geometries. On the other hand, we consider the more complicated situation of strong symmetry, i.e. we discretize the mixed weak form determined by the so-called Hellinger-Reissner variational principle. We show the existence of suitable approximate fields leading to an inf-sup stable saddle-point problem. For both discretization approaches we prove convergence statements and in case of weak symmetry we illustrate the approximation behavior by means of several numerical experiments.

We study the numerical approximation by space-time finite element methods of a multi-physics system coupling hyperbolic elastodynamics with parabolic transport and modelling poro- and thermoelasticity. The equations are rewritten as a first-order system in time. Discretizations by continuous Galerkin methods in space and time with inf-sup stable pairs of finite elements for the spatial approximation of the unknowns are investigated. Optimal order error estimates of energy-type are proven. Superconvergence at the time nodes is addressed briefly. The error analysis can be extended to discontinuous and enriched Galerkin space discretizations. The error estimates are confirmed by numerical experiments.

Multigrid is a powerful solver for large-scale linear systems arising from discretized partial differential equations. The convergence theory of multigrid methods for symmetric positive definite problems has been well developed over the past decades, while, for nonsymmetric problems, such theory is still not mature. As a foundation for multigrid analysis, two-grid convergence theory plays an important role in motivating multigrid algorithms. Regarding two-grid methods for nonsymmetric problems, most previous works focus on the spectral radius of iteration matrix or rely on convergence measures that are typically difficult to compute in practice. Moreover, the existing results are confined to two-grid methods with exact solution of the coarse-grid system. In this paper, we analyze the convergence of a two-grid method for nonsymmetric positive definite problems (e.g., linear systems arising from the discretizations of convection-diffusion equations). In the case of exact coarse solver, we establish an elegant identity for characterizing two-grid convergence factor, which is measured by a smoother-induced norm. The identity can be conveniently used to derive a class of optimal restriction operators and analyze how the convergence factor is influenced by restriction. More generally, we present some convergence estimates for an inexact variant of the two-grid method, in which both linear and nonlinear coarse solvers are considered.

In the storied Colonel Blotto game, two colonels allocate $a$ and $b$ troops, respectively, to $k$ distinct battlefields. A colonel wins a battle if they assign more troops to that particular battle, and each colonel seeks to maximize their total number of victories. Despite the problem's formulation in 1921, the first polynomial-time algorithm to compute Nash equilibrium (NE) strategies for this game was discovered only quite recently. In 2016, \citep{ahmadinejad_dehghani_hajiaghayi_lucier_mahini_seddighin_2019} formulated a breakthrough algorithm to compute NE strategies for the Colonel Blotto game\footnote{To the best of our knowledge, the algorithm from \citep{ahmadinejad_dehghani_hajiaghayi_lucier_mahini_seddighin_2019} has computational complexity $O(k^{14}\max\{a,b\}^{13})$}, receiving substantial media coverage (e.g. \citep{Insider}, \citep{NSF}, \citep{ScienceDaily}). In this work, we present the first known $\epsilon$-approximation algorithm to compute NE strategies in the two-player Colonel Blotto game in runtime $\widetilde{O}(\epsilon^{-4} k^8 \max\{a,b\}^2)$ for arbitrary settings of these parameters. Moreover, this algorithm computes approximate coarse correlated equilibrium strategies in the multiplayer (continuous and discrete) Colonel Blotto game (when there are $\ell > 2$ colonels) with runtime $\widetilde{O}(\ell \epsilon^{-4} k^8 n^2 + \ell^2 \epsilon^{-2} k^3 n (n+k))$, where $n$ is the maximum troop count. Before this work, no polynomial-time algorithm was known to compute exact or approximate equilibrium (in any sense) strategies for multiplayer Colonel Blotto with arbitrary parameters. Our algorithm computes these approximate equilibria by a novel (to the author's knowledge) sampling technique with which we implicitly perform multiplicative weights update over the exponentially many strategies available to each player.

The stochastic gradient Langevin Dynamics is one of the most fundamental algorithms to solve sampling problems and non-convex optimization appearing in several machine learning applications. Especially, its variance reduced versions have nowadays gained particular attention. In this paper, we study two variants of this kind, namely, the Stochastic Variance Reduced Gradient Langevin Dynamics and the Stochastic Recursive Gradient Langevin Dynamics. We prove their convergence to the objective distribution in terms of KL-divergence under the sole assumptions of smoothness and Log-Sobolev inequality which are weaker conditions than those used in prior works for these algorithms. With the batch size and the inner loop length set to $\sqrt{n}$, the gradient complexity to achieve an $\epsilon$-precision is $\tilde{O}((n+dn^{1/2}\epsilon^{-1})\gamma^2 L^2\alpha^{-2})$, which is an improvement from any previous analyses. We also show some essential applications of our result to non-convex optimization.
