An important prerequisite for autonomous robots is their ability to reliably grasp a wide variety of objects. Most state-of-the-art systems employ specialized or simple end-effectors, such as two-jaw grippers, which severely limit the range of objects to manipulate. Additionally, they conventionally require a structured and fully predictable environment while the vast majority of our world is complex, unstructured, and dynamic. This paper presents an implementation to overcome both issues. Firstly, the integration of a five-finger hand enhances the variety of possible grasps and manipulable objects. This kinematically complex end-effector is controlled by a deep learning based generative grasping network. The required virtual model of the unknown target object is iteratively completed by processing visual sensor data. Secondly, this visual feedback is employed to realize closed-loop servo control which compensates for external disturbances. Our experiments on real hardware confirm the system's capability to reliably grasp unknown dynamic target objects without a priori knowledge of their trajectories. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first method to achieve dynamic multi-fingered grasping for unknown objects. A video of the experiments is available at //youtu.be/Ut28yM1gnvI.

Current quantum computers can only solve optimization problems of a very limited size. For larger problems, decomposition methods are required in which the original problem is broken down into several smaller sub-problems. These are then solved on the quantum computer and their solutions are merged into a final solution for the original problem. Often, these decomposition methods do not take the specific problem structure into account. In this paper, we present a tailored method using a divide-and-conquer strategy to solve the number partitioning problem (NPP) with a large number of variables. The idea is to perform a specialized decomposition into smaller NPPs, which can be solved on a quantum computer, and then recombine the results into another small auxiliary NPP. Solving this auxiliary problem yields an approximate solution of the original larger problem. We experimentally verify that our method allows to solve NPPs with over a thousand variables using a D-Wave quantum annealer.

When modeling complex robot systems such as branched robots, whose kinematic structures are a tree, current techniques often require modeling the whole structure from scratch, even when partial models for the branches are available. This paper proposes a systematic modular procedure for the dynamic modeling of branched robots comprising several subsystems, each composed of an arbitrary number of rigid bodies, providing the final dynamic model by reusing previous models of each branch. Unlike previous approaches, the proposed strategy is applicable even if some subsystems are regarded as black boxes, requiring only twists and wrenches at the connection points between them. To help in the model composition, we also propose a weighted directed graph representation where the weights encode the propagation of twists and wrenches between the subsystems. A simple linear operation on the graph interconnection matrix provides the dynamics of the whole system. Numerical results using a 24-DoF fixed-base branched robot composed of eight subsystems show that the proposed formalism is as accurate as a state-of-the-art library for robotic dynamic modeling. Additional results using a 30-DoF holonomic branched mobile manipulator composed of three subsystems demonstrate the fidelity of our model to a modern robotics simulator and its capability of dealing with black box subsystems. To further illustrate how the derived dynamic model can be used in closed-loop control, we also present a simple formulation of a model-based wrench-driven pose control for branched robots.

In research of manufacturing systems and autonomous robots, the term capability is used for a machine-interpretable specification of a system function. Approaches in this research area develop information models that capture all information relevant to interpret the requirements, effects and behavior of functions. These approaches are intended to overcome the heterogeneity resulting from the various types of processes and from the large number of different vendors. However, these models and associated methods do not offer solutions for automated process planning, i.e. finding a sequence of individual capabilities required to manufacture a certain product or to accomplish a mission using autonomous robots. Instead, this is a typical task for AI planning approaches, which unfortunately require a high effort to create the respective planning problem descriptions. In this paper, we present an approach that combines these two topics: Starting from a semantic capability model, an AI planning problem is automatically generated. The planning problem is encoded using Satisfiability Modulo Theories and uses an existing solver to find valid capability sequences including required parameter values. The approach also offers possibilities to integrate existing human expertise and to provide explanations for human operators in order to help understand planning decisions.

Algorithmic predictions are increasingly used to inform the allocations of goods and interventions in the public sphere. In these domains, predictions serve as a means to an end. They provide stakeholders with insights into likelihood of future events as a means to improve decision making quality, and enhance social welfare. However, if maximizing welfare is the ultimate goal, prediction is only a small piece of the puzzle. There are various other policy levers a social planner might pursue in order to improve bottom-line outcomes, such as expanding access to available goods, or increasing the effect sizes of interventions. Given this broad range of design decisions, a basic question to ask is: What is the relative value of prediction in algorithmic decision making? How do the improvements in welfare arising from better predictions compare to those of other policy levers? The goal of our work is to initiate the formal study of these questions. Our main results are theoretical in nature. We identify simple, sharp conditions determining the relative value of prediction vis-\`a-vis expanding access, within several statistical models that are popular amongst quantitative social scientists. Furthermore, we illustrate how these theoretical insights may be used to guide the design of algorithmic decision making systems in practice.

Movement primitives (MPs) are compact representations of robot skills that can be learned from demonstrations and combined into complex behaviors. However, merely equipping robots with a fixed set of innate MPs is insufficient to deploy them in dynamic and unpredictable environments. Instead, the full potential of MPs remains to be attained via adaptable, large-scale MP libraries. In this paper, we propose a set of seven fundamental operations to incrementally learn, improve, and re-organize MP libraries. To showcase their applicability, we provide explicit formulations of the spatial operations for libraries composed of Via-Point Movement Primitives (VMPs). By building on Riemannian manifold theory, our approach enables the incremental learning of all parameters of position and orientation VMPs within a library. Moreover, our approach stores a fixed number of parameters, thus complying with the essential principles of incremental learning. We evaluate our approach to incrementally learn a VMP library from motion capture data provided sequentially.

Code writing is repetitive and predictable, inspiring us to develop various code intelligence techniques. This survey focuses on code search, that is, to retrieve code that matches a given query by effectively capturing the semantic similarity between the query and code. Deep learning, being able to extract complex semantics information, has achieved great success in this field. Recently, various deep learning methods, such as graph neural networks and pretraining models, have been applied to code search with significant progress. Deep learning is now the leading paradigm for code search. In this survey, we provide a comprehensive overview of deep learning-based code search. We review the existing deep learning-based code search framework which maps query/code to vectors and measures their similarity. Furthermore, we propose a new taxonomy to illustrate the state-of-the-art deep learning-based code search in a three-steps process: query semantics modeling, code semantics modeling, and matching modeling which involves the deep learning model training. Finally, we suggest potential avenues for future research in this promising field.

In pace with developments in the research field of artificial intelligence, knowledge graphs (KGs) have attracted a surge of interest from both academia and industry. As a representation of semantic relations between entities, KGs have proven to be particularly relevant for natural language processing (NLP), experiencing a rapid spread and wide adoption within recent years. Given the increasing amount of research work in this area, several KG-related approaches have been surveyed in the NLP research community. However, a comprehensive study that categorizes established topics and reviews the maturity of individual research streams remains absent to this day. Contributing to closing this gap, we systematically analyzed 507 papers from the literature on KGs in NLP. Our survey encompasses a multifaceted review of tasks, research types, and contributions. As a result, we present a structured overview of the research landscape, provide a taxonomy of tasks, summarize our findings, and highlight directions for future work.

When is heterogeneity in the composition of an autonomous robotic team beneficial and when is it detrimental? We investigate and answer this question in the context of a minimally viable model that examines the role of heterogeneous speeds in perimeter defense problems, where defenders share a total allocated speed budget. We consider two distinct problem settings and develop strategies based on dynamic programming and on local interaction rules. We present a theoretical analysis of both approaches and our results are extensively validated using simulations. Interestingly, our results demonstrate that the viability of heterogeneous teams depends on the amount of information available to the defenders. Moreover, our results suggest a universality property: across a wide range of problem parameters the optimal ratio of the speeds of the defenders remains nearly constant.

Deep neural networks (DNNs) are successful in many computer vision tasks. However, the most accurate DNNs require millions of parameters and operations, making them energy, computation and memory intensive. This impedes the deployment of large DNNs in low-power devices with limited compute resources. Recent research improves DNN models by reducing the memory requirement, energy consumption, and number of operations without significantly decreasing the accuracy. This paper surveys the progress of low-power deep learning and computer vision, specifically in regards to inference, and discusses the methods for compacting and accelerating DNN models. The techniques can be divided into four major categories: (1) parameter quantization and pruning, (2) compressed convolutional filters and matrix factorization, (3) network architecture search, and (4) knowledge distillation. We analyze the accuracy, advantages, disadvantages, and potential solutions to the problems with the techniques in each category. We also discuss new evaluation metrics as a guideline for future research.

While it is nearly effortless for humans to quickly assess the perceptual similarity between two images, the underlying processes are thought to be quite complex. Despite this, the most widely used perceptual metrics today, such as PSNR and SSIM, are simple, shallow functions, and fail to account for many nuances of human perception. Recently, the deep learning community has found that features of the VGG network trained on the ImageNet classification task has been remarkably useful as a training loss for image synthesis. But how perceptual are these so-called "perceptual losses"? What elements are critical for their success? To answer these questions, we introduce a new Full Reference Image Quality Assessment (FR-IQA) dataset of perceptual human judgments, orders of magnitude larger than previous datasets. We systematically evaluate deep features across different architectures and tasks and compare them with classic metrics. We find that deep features outperform all previous metrics by huge margins. More surprisingly, this result is not restricted to ImageNet-trained VGG features, but holds across different deep architectures and levels of supervision (supervised, self-supervised, or even unsupervised). Our results suggest that perceptual similarity is an emergent property shared across deep visual representations.
