An $n$-vertex $m$-edge graph is \emph{$k$-vertex connected} if it cannot be disconnected by deleting less than $k$ vertices. After more than half a century of intensive research, the result by [Li et al. STOC'21] finally gave a \emph{randomized} algorithm for checking $k$-connectivity in near-optimal $\widehat{O}(m)$ time. (We use $\widehat{O}(\cdot)$ to hide an $n^{o(1)}$ factor.) Deterministic algorithms, unfortunately, have remained much slower even if we assume a linear-time max-flow algorithm: they either require at least $\Omega(mn)$ time [Even'75; Henzinger Rao and Gabow, FOCS'96; Gabow, FOCS'00] or assume that $k=o(\sqrt{\log n})$ [Saranurak and Yingchareonthawornchai, FOCS'22]. We show a \emph{deterministic} algorithm for checking $k$-vertex connectivity in time proportional to making $\widehat{O}(k^{2})$ max-flow calls, and, hence, in $\widehat{O}(mk^{2})$ time using the deterministic max-flow algorithm by [Brand et al. FOCS'23]. Our algorithm gives the first almost-linear-time bound for all $k$ where $\sqrt{\log n}\le k\le n^{o(1)}$ and subsumes up to a sub polynomial factor the long-standing state-of-the-art algorithm by [Even'75] which requires $O(n+k^{2})$ max-flow calls. Our key technique is a deterministic algorithm for terminal reduction for vertex connectivity: given a terminal set separated by a vertex mincut, output either a vertex mincut or a smaller terminal set that remains separated by a vertex mincut. We also show a deterministic $(1+\epsilon)$-approximation algorithm for vertex connectivity that makes $O(n/\epsilon^2)$ max-flow calls, improving the bound of $O(n^{1.5})$ max-flow calls in the exact algorithm of [Gabow, FOCS'00]. We show a fully dynamic algorithm for maintaining $(1+\epsilon)$-approximate \emph{size} of maximum matching of the graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges using $m^{0.5-\Omega_{\epsilon}(1)}$ update time. This is the first polynomial improvement over the long-standing $O(n)$ update time, which can be trivially obtained by periodic recomputation. Thus, we resolve the value version of a major open question of the dynamic graph algorithms literature (see, e.g., [Gupta and Peng FOCS'13], [Bernstein and Stein SODA'16],[Behnezhad and Khanna SODA'22]). Our key technical component is the first sublinear algorithm for $(1,\epsilon n)$-approximate maximum matching with sublinear running time on dense graphs. All previous algorithms suffered a multiplicative approximation factor of at least $1.499$ or assumed that the graph has a very small maximum degree.

In this work, we establish that this is indeed the case for Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretisations (in time and space) of non-Newtonian models with $p$-structure, assuming that $p\geq \frac{3d+2}{d+2}$; the time discretisation is equivalent to the RadauIIA Implicit Runge-Kutta method. We also prove (weak) convergence of the numerical scheme to the weak solution of the system; this type of convergence result for schemes based on quadrature seems to be new. As an auxiliary result, we also derive Gagliardo-Nirenberg-type inequalities on DG spaces, which might be of independent interest.

In this work, we propose an absolute value block $\alpha$-circulant preconditioner for the minimal residual (MINRES) method to solve an all-at-once system arising from the discretization of wave equations. Since the original block $\alpha$-circulant preconditioner shown successful by many recently is non-Hermitian in general, it cannot be directly used as a preconditioner for MINRES. Motivated by the absolute value block circulant preconditioner proposed in [E. McDonald, J. Pestana, and A. Wathen. SIAM J. Sci. Comput., 40(2):A1012-A1033, 2018], we propose an absolute value version of the block $\alpha$-circulant preconditioner. Our proposed preconditioner is the first Hermitian positive definite variant of the block $\alpha$-circulant preconditioner, which fills the gap between block $\alpha$-circulant preconditioning and the field of preconditioned MINRES solver. The matrix-vector multiplication of the preconditioner can be fast implemented via fast Fourier transforms. Theoretically, we show that for properly chosen $\alpha$ the MINRES solver with the proposed preconditioner has a linear convergence rate independent of the matrix size. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to generalize the original absolute value block circulant preconditioner in the aspects of both theory and performance. Numerical experiments are given to support the effectiveness of our preconditioner, showing that the expected optimal convergence can be achieved.

The $k$-means++ algorithm of Arthur and Vassilvitskii (SODA 2007) is often the practitioners' choice algorithm for optimizing the popular $k$-means clustering objective and is known to give an $O(\log k)$-approximation in expectation. To obtain higher quality solutions, Lattanzi and Sohler (ICML 2019) proposed augmenting $k$-means++ with $O(k \log \log k)$ local search steps obtained through the $k$-means++ sampling distribution to yield a $c$-approximation to the $k$-means clustering problem, where $c$ is a large absolute constant. Here we generalize and extend their local search algorithm by considering larger and more sophisticated local search neighborhoods hence allowing to swap multiple centers at the same time. Our algorithm achieves a $9 + \varepsilon$ approximation ratio, which is the best possible for local search. Importantly we show that our approach yields substantial practical improvements, we show significant quality improvements over the approach of Lattanzi and Sohler (ICML 2019) on several datasets.

In this paper we study the orbit closure problem for a reductive group $G\subseteq GL(X)$ acting on a finite dimensional vector space $V$ over ${\mathbb C}$. We assume that the center of $GL(X)$ lies within $G$ and acts on $V$ through a fixed non-trivial character. We study points $y,z\in V$ where (i) $z$ is obtained as the leading term of the action of a 1-parameter subgroup $\lambda (t)\subseteq G$ on $y$, and (ii) $y$ and $z$ have large distinctive stabilizers $K,H \subseteq G$. Let $O(z)$ (resp. $O(y)$) denote the $G$-orbits of $z$ (resp. $y$), and $\overline{O(z)}$ (resp. $\overline{O(y)}$) their closures, then (i) implies that $z\in \overline{O(y)}$. We address the question: under what conditions can (i) and (ii) be simultaneously satisfied, i.e, there exists a 1-PS $\lambda \subseteq G$ for which $z$ is observed as a limit of $y$. Given $n$ noisy samples with $p$ dimensions, where $n \ll p$, we show that the multi-step thresholding procedure based on the Lasso -- we call it the {\it Thresholded Lasso}, can accurately estimate a sparse vector $\beta \in {\mathbb R}^p$ in a linear model $Y = X \beta + \epsilon$, where $X_{n \times p}$ is a design matrix normalized to have column $\ell_2$-norm $\sqrt{n}$, and $\epsilon \sim N(0, \sigma^2 I_n)$. We show that under the restricted eigenvalue (RE) condition, it is possible to achieve the $\ell_2$ loss within a logarithmic factor of the ideal mean square error one would achieve with an {\em oracle } while selecting a sufficiently sparse model -- hence achieving {\it sparse oracle inequalities}; the oracle would supply perfect information about which coordinates are non-zero and which are above the noise level. Maintaining a $k$-core decomposition quickly in a dynamic graph has important applications in network analysis. The main challenge for designing efficient exact algorithms is that a single update to the graph can cause significant global changes. Our paper focuses on \emph{approximation} algorithms with small approximation factors that are much more efficient than what exact algorithms can obtain. We present the first parallel, batch-dynamic algorithm for approximate $k$-core decomposition that is efficient in both theory and practice. Our algorithm is based on our novel parallel level data structure, inspired by the sequential level data structures of Bhattacharya et al [STOC '15] and Henzinger et al [2020]. Given a graph with $n$ vertices and a batch of updates $\mathcal{B}$, our algorithm provably maintains a $(2 + \varepsilon)$-approximation of the coreness values of all vertices (for any constant $\varepsilon > 0$) in $O(|\mathcal{B}|\log^2 n)$ amortized work and $O(\log^2 n \log\log n)$ depth (parallel time) with high probability. As a by-product, our $k$-core decomposition algorithm also gives a batch-dynamic algorithm for maintaining an $O(\alpha)$ out-degree orientation, where $\alpha$ is the current arboricity of the graph. We demonstrate the usefulness of our low out-degree orientation algorithm by presenting a new framework to formally study batch-dynamic algorithms in bounded-arboricity graphs. Our framework obtains new provably-efficient parallel batch-dynamic algorithms for maximal matching, clique counting, and vertex coloring. We implemented and experimentally evaluated our $k$-core decomposition algorithm on a 30-core machine with two-way hyper-threading on $11$ graphs of varying densities and sizes. [...]
