A key challenge in off-road navigation is that even visually similar terrains or ones from the same semantic class may have substantially different traction properties. Existing work typically assumes no wheel slip or uses the expected traction for motion planning, where the predicted trajectories provide a poor indication of the actual performance if the terrain traction has high uncertainty. In contrast, this work proposes to analyze terrain traversability with the empirical distribution of traction parameters in unicycle dynamics, which can be learned by a neural network in a self-supervised fashion. The probabilistic traction model leads to two risk-aware cost formulations that account for the worst-case expected cost and traction. To help the learned model generalize to unseen environment, terrains with features that lead to unreliable predictions are detected via a density estimator fit to the trained network's latent space and avoided via auxiliary penalties during planning. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms existing work that assumes no slip or uses the expected traction in both navigation success rate and completion time. Furthermore, avoiding terrains with low density-based confidence score achieves up to 30% improvement in success rate when the learned traction model is used in a novel environment.

Mobile manipulators have been used for inspection, maintenance and repair tasks over the years, but there are some key limitations. Stability concerns typically require mobile platforms to be large in order to handle far-reaching manipulators, or for the manipulators to have drastically reduced workspaces to fit onto smaller mobile platforms. Therefore we propose a combination of two widely-used robots, the Clearpath Jackal unmanned ground vehicle and the Kinova Gen3 six degree-of-freedom manipulator. The Jackal has a small footprint and works well in low-clearance indoor environments. Extensive testing of localization, navigation and mapping using LiDAR sensors makes the Jackal a well developed mobile platform suitable for mobile manipulation. The Gen3 has a long reach with reasonable power consumption for manipulation tasks. A wrist camera for RGB-D sensing and a customizable end effector interface makes the Gen3 suitable for a myriad of manipulation tasks. Typically these features would result in an unstable platform, however with a few minor hardware and software modifications, we have produced a stable, high-performance mobile manipulation platform with significant mobility, reach, sensing, and maneuverability for indoor inspection tasks, without degradation of the component robots' individual capabilities. These assertions were investigated with hardware via semi-autonomous navigation to waypoints in a busy indoor environment, and high-precision self-alignment alongside planar structures for intervention tasks.

Semantic segmentation is an essential technology for self-driving cars to comprehend their surroundings. Currently, real-time semantic segmentation networks commonly employ either encoder-decoder architecture or two-pathway architecture. Generally speaking, encoder-decoder models tend to be quicker,whereas two-pathway models exhibit higher accuracy. To leverage both strengths, we present the Spatial-Assistant Encoder-Decoder Network (SANet) to fuse the two architectures. In the overall architecture, we uphold the encoder-decoder design while maintaining the feature maps in the middle section of the encoder and utilizing atrous convolution branches for same-resolution feature extraction. Toward the end of the encoder, we integrate the asymmetric pooling pyramid pooling module (APPPM) to optimize the semantic extraction of the feature maps. This module incorporates asymmetric pooling layers that extract features at multiple resolutions. In the decoder, we present a hybrid attention module, SAD, that integrates horizontal and vertical attention to facilitate the combination of various branches. To ascertain the effectiveness of our approach, our SANet model achieved competitive results on the real-time CamVid and cityscape datasets. By employing a single 2080Ti GPU, SANet achieved a 78.4 % mIOU at 65.1 FPS on the Cityscape test dataset and 78.8 % mIOU at 147 FPS on the CamVid test dataset. Honeypots play a crucial role in implementing various cyber deception techniques as they possess the capability to divert attackers away from valuable assets. Careful strategic placement of honeypots in networks should consider not only network aspects but also attackers' preferences. The allocation of honeypots in tactical networks under network mobility is of great interest. To achieve this objective, we present a game-theoretic approach that generates optimal honeypot allocation strategies within an attack/defense scenario. Our proposed approach takes into consideration the changes in network connectivity. In particular, we introduce a two-player dynamic game model that explicitly incorporates the future state evolution resulting from changes in network connectivity. The defender's objective is twofold: to maximize the likelihood of the attacker hitting a honeypot and to minimize the cost associated with deception and reconfiguration due to changes in network topology. We present an iterative algorithm to find Nash equilibrium strategies and analyze the scalability of the algorithm. Finally, we validate our approach and present numerical results based on simulations, demonstrating that our game model successfully enhances network security. Additionally, we have proposed additional enhancements to improve the scalability of the proposed approach.

Non-monotone object rearrangement planning in confined spaces such as cabinets and shelves is a widely occurring but challenging problem in robotics. Both the robot motion and the available regions for object relocation are highly constrained because of the limited space. This work proposes a Multi-Stage Monte Carlo Tree Search (MS-MCTS) method to solve non-monotone object rearrangement planning problems in confined spaces. Our approach decouples the complex problem into simpler subproblems using an object stage topology. A subgoal-focused tree expansion algorithm that jointly considers the high-level planning and the low-level robot motion is designed to reduce the search space and better guide the search process. By fitting the task into the MCTS paradigm, our method produces optimistic solutions by balancing exploration and exploitation. The experiments demonstrate that our method outperforms the existing methods in terms of the planning time, the number of steps, and the total move distance. Moreover, we deploy our MS-MCTS to a real-world robot system and verify its performance in different scenarios.

Gesture recognition is a pivotal technology in the realm of intelligent education, and millimeter-wave (mmWave) signals possess advantages such as high resolution and strong penetration capability. This paper introduces a highly accurate and robust gesture recognition method using mmWave radar. The method involves capturing the raw signals of hand movements with the mmWave radar module and preprocessing the received radar signals, including Fourier transformation, distance compression, Doppler processing, and noise reduction through moving target indication (MTI). The preprocessed signals are then fed into the Convolutional Neural Network-Time Domain Convolutional Network (CNN-TCN) model to extract spatio-temporal features, with recognition performance evaluated through classification. Experimental results demonstrate that this method achieves an accuracy rate of 98.2% in domain-specific recognition and maintains a consistently high recognition rate across different neural networks, showcasing exceptional recognition performance and robustness.

The study adopts a multidimensional approach, focusing on five key areas: (1) the Turing completeness of Ableton, a widely used digital audio workstation, (2) the undecidability of satisfiability in sound creation utilizing an array of effects, (3) the undecidability of constraints on polymeters in musical compositions, (4) the undecidability of satisfiability in just intonation harmony constraints, and (5) the undecidability of "new ordering systems". In addition to providing theoretical proof for these assertions, the paper elucidates the practical relevance of these concepts for practitioners outside the field of theoretical computer science. Never having seen an object and heard its sound simultaneously, can the model still accurately localize its visual position from the input audio? In this work, we concentrate on the Audio-Visual Localization and Segmentation tasks but under the demanding zero-shot and few-shot scenarios. To achieve this goal, different from existing approaches that mostly employ the encoder-fusion-decoder paradigm to decode localization information from the fused audio-visual feature, we introduce the encoder-prompt-decoder paradigm, aiming to better fit the data scarcity and varying data distribution dilemmas with the help of abundant knowledge from pre-trained models. Specifically, we first propose to construct Semantic-aware Audio Prompt (SAP) to help the visual foundation model focus on sounding objects, meanwhile, the semantic gap between the visual and audio modalities is also encouraged to shrink. Then, we develop a Correlation Adapter (ColA) to keep minimal training efforts as well as maintain adequate knowledge of the visual foundation model. By equipping with these means, extensive experiments demonstrate that this new paradigm outperforms other fusion-based methods in both the unseen class and cross-dataset settings. We hope that our work can further promote the generalization study of Audio-Visual Localization and Segmentation in practical application scenarios.

Fairness problems in recommender systems often have a complexity in practice that is not adequately captured in simplified research formulations. A social choice formulation of the fairness problem, operating within a multi-agent architecture of fairness concerns, offers a flexible and multi-aspect alternative to fairness-aware recommendation approaches. Leveraging social choice allows for increased generality and the possibility of tapping into well-studied social choice algorithms for resolving the tension between multiple, competing fairness concerns. This paper explores a range of options for choice mechanisms in multi-aspect fairness applications using both real and synthetic data and shows that different classes of choice and allocation mechanisms yield different but consistent fairness / accuracy tradeoffs. We also show that a multi-agent formulation offers flexibility in adapting to user population dynamics.

The key challenge of image manipulation detection is how to learn generalizable features that are sensitive to manipulations in novel data, whilst specific to prevent false alarms on authentic images. Current research emphasizes the sensitivity, with the specificity overlooked. In this paper we address both aspects by multi-view feature learning and multi-scale supervision. By exploiting noise distribution and boundary artifact surrounding tampered regions, the former aims to learn semantic-agnostic and thus more generalizable features. The latter allows us to learn from authentic images which are nontrivial to be taken into account by current semantic segmentation network based methods. Our thoughts are realized by a new network which we term MVSS-Net. Extensive experiments on five benchmark sets justify the viability of MVSS-Net for both pixel-level and image-level manipulation detection.
