Cloud computing is a ubiquitous solution to handle today's complex computing demands. However, it comes with data privacy concerns, as the cloud service provider has complete access to code and data running on their infrastructure. VM-based Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) are a promising solution to solve this issue. They provide strong isolation guarantees to lock out the cloud service provider, as well as an attestation mechanism to enable the end user to verify their trustworthiness. Attesting the whole boot chain of a VM is a challenging task that requires modifications to several software components. While there are open source solutions for the individual components, the tooling and documentation for properly integrating them remains scarce. In this paper, we try to fill this gap by elaborating on two common boot workflows and providing open source tooling to perform them with low manual effort. The first workflow assumes that the VM image does only require integrity but not confidentiality, allowing for an uninterrupted boot process. The second workflow covers booting a VM with an encrypted root filesystem, requiring secure provisioning of the decryption key during early boot. While our tooling targets AMD Secure Encrypted Virtualization (SEV) VMs, the concepts also apply to other VM-based TEEs such as Intel Trusted Domain Extensions (TDX).
Image composition is a complex task which requires a lot of information about the scene for an accurate and realistic composition, such as perspective, lighting, shadows, occlusions, and object interactions. Previous methods have predominantly used 2D information for image composition, neglecting the potentials of 3D spatial information. In this work, we propose DepGAN, a Generative Adversarial Network that utilizes depth maps and alpha channels to rectify inaccurate occlusions and enhance transparency effects in image composition. Central to our network is a novel loss function called Depth Aware Loss which quantifies the pixel wise depth difference to accurately delineate occlusion boundaries while compositing objects at different depth levels. Furthermore, we enhance our network's learning process by utilizing opacity data, enabling it to effectively manage compositions involving transparent and semi-transparent objects. We tested our model against state-of-the-art image composition GANs on benchmark (both real and synthetic) datasets. The results reveal that DepGAN significantly outperforms existing methods in terms of accuracy of object placement semantics, transparency and occlusion handling, both visually and quantitatively. Access to granular demand data is essential for the net zero transition; it allows for accurate profiling and active demand management as our reliance on variable renewable generation increases. However, public release of this data is often impossible due to privacy concerns. Good quality synthetic data can circumnavigate this issue. Despite significant research on generating synthetic smart meter data, there is still insufficient work on creating a consistent evaluation framework. In this paper, we investigate how common frameworks used by other industries leveraging synthetic data, can be applied to synthetic smart meter data, such as fidelity, utility and privacy. We also recommend specific metrics to ensure that defining aspects of smart meter data are preserved and test the extent to which privacy can be protected using differential privacy. We show that standard privacy attack methods like reconstruction or membership inference attacks are inadequate for assessing privacy risks of smart meter datasets. We propose an improved method by injecting training data with implausible outliers, then launching privacy attacks directly on these outliers. The choice of $\epsilon$ (a metric of privacy loss) significantly impacts privacy risk, highlighting the necessity of performing these explicit privacy tests when making trade-offs between fidelity and privacy.
Recommendation systems usually recommend the existing contents to different users. However, in comparison to static recommendation methods, a recommendation logic that dynamically adjusts based on user interest preferences may potentially attract a larger user base. Thus, we consider paraphrasing existing content based on the interests of the users to modify the content to better align with the preferences of users. In this paper, we propose a new task named Target-Audience Oriented Content Paraphrase aims to generate more customized contents for the target audience. We introduce the task definition and the corresponding framework for the proposed task and the creation of the corresponding datasets. We utilize the Large Language Models (LLMs) and Large Vision Models (LVMs) to accomplish the base implementation of the TOP framework and provide the referential baseline results for the proposed task.
The construction industry has been traditionally slow in adopting digital technologies. However, these are becoming increasingly necessary due to a plentitude of challenges, such as a shortage of skilled labor and decreasing productivity levels compared to other industries. Autonomous robotic systems can alleviate this problem, but the software development process for these systems is heavily driven by data, a resource usually challenging to find in the construction domain due to the lack of public availability. In our work, we therefore provide a dataset of 14,805 RGB images with segmentation labels for reinforced concrete construction and make it publicly available. We conduct a detailed analysis of our dataset and discuss how to deal with labeling inconsistencies. Furthermore, we establish baselines for the YOLOv8L-seg, DeepLabV3, and U-Net segmentation models and investigate the influence of data availability and label inconsistencies on the performance of these models. Our study showed that the models are precise in their predictions but would benefit from more data to increase the number of recalled instances. Label inconsistencies had a negligible effect on model performance, and we, therefore, advocate for a crowd-sourced dataset to boost the development of autonomous robotic systems in the construction industry.
Debugging is one of the most time-consuming and expensive tasks in software development. Several formula-based fault localization (FBFL) methods have been proposed, but they fail to guarantee a set of diagnoses across all failing tests or may produce redundant diagnoses that are not subset-minimal, particularly for programs with multiple faults. This paper introduces a novel fault localization approach for C programs with multiple faults. CFaults leverages Model-Based Diagnosis (MBD) with multiple observations and aggregates all failing test cases into a unified MaxSAT formula. Consequently, our method guarantees consistency across observations and simplifies the fault localization procedure. Experimental results on two benchmark sets of C programs, TCAS and C-Pack-IPAs, show that CFaults is faster than other FBFL approaches like BugAssist and SNIPER. Moreover, CFaults only generates subset-minimal diagnoses of faulty statements, whereas the other approaches tend to enumerate redundant diagnoses.
Behavioural biometric authentication systems entail an enrolment period that is burdensome for the user. In this work, we explore generating synthetic gestures from a few real user gestures with generative deep learning, with the application of training a simple (i.e. non-deep-learned) authentication model. Specifically, we show that utilising synthetic data alongside real data can reduce the number of real datapoints a user must provide to enrol into a biometric system. To validate our methods, we use the publicly available dataset of WatchAuth, a system proposed in 2022 for authenticating smartwatch payments using the physical gesture of reaching towards a payment terminal. We develop a regularised autoencoder model for generating synthetic user-specific wrist motion data representing these physical gestures, and demonstrate the diversity and fidelity of our synthetic gestures. We show that using synthetic gestures in training can improve classification ability for a real-world system. Through this technique we can reduce the number of gestures required to enrol a user into a WatchAuth-like system by more than 40% without negatively impacting its error rates.
Analytics on structured data is a mature field with many successful methods. However, most real world data exists in unstructured form, such as images and conversations. We investigate the potential of Large Language Models (LLMs) to enable unstructured data analytics. In particular, we propose a new Universal Query Engine (UQE) that directly interrogates and draws insights from unstructured data collections. This engine accepts queries in a Universal Query Language (UQL), a dialect of SQL that provides full natural language flexibility in specifying conditions and operators. The new engine leverages the ability of LLMs to conduct analysis of unstructured data, while also allowing us to exploit advances in sampling and optimization techniques to achieve efficient and accurate query execution. In addition, we borrow techniques from classical compiler theory to better orchestrate the workflow between sampling methods and foundation model calls. We demonstrate the efficiency of UQE on data analytics across different modalities, including images, dialogs and reviews, across a range of useful query types, including conditional aggregation, semantic retrieval and abstraction aggregation.
In pace with developments in the research field of artificial intelligence, knowledge graphs (KGs) have attracted a surge of interest from both academia and industry. As a representation of semantic relations between entities, KGs have proven to be particularly relevant for natural language processing (NLP), experiencing a rapid spread and wide adoption within recent years. Given the increasing amount of research work in this area, several KG-related approaches have been surveyed in the NLP research community. However, a comprehensive study that categorizes established topics and reviews the maturity of individual research streams remains absent to this day. Contributing to closing this gap, we systematically analyzed 507 papers from the literature on KGs in NLP. Our survey encompasses a multifaceted review of tasks, research types, and contributions. As a result, we present a structured overview of the research landscape, provide a taxonomy of tasks, summarize our findings, and highlight directions for future work.
User engagement is a critical metric for evaluating the quality of open-domain dialogue systems. Prior work has focused on conversation-level engagement by using heuristically constructed features such as the number of turns and the total time of the conversation. In this paper, we investigate the possibility and efficacy of estimating utterance-level engagement and define a novel metric, {\em predictive engagement}, for automatic evaluation of open-domain dialogue systems. Our experiments demonstrate that (1) human annotators have high agreement on assessing utterance-level engagement scores; (2) conversation-level engagement scores can be predicted from properly aggregated utterance-level engagement scores. Furthermore, we show that the utterance-level engagement scores can be learned from data. These scores can improve automatic evaluation metrics for open-domain dialogue systems, as shown by correlation with human judgements. This suggests that predictive engagement can be used as a real-time feedback for training better dialogue models.
Spectral clustering is a leading and popular technique in unsupervised data analysis. Two of its major limitations are scalability and generalization of the spectral embedding (i.e., out-of-sample-extension). In this paper we introduce a deep learning approach to spectral clustering that overcomes the above shortcomings. Our network, which we call SpectralNet, learns a map that embeds input data points into the eigenspace of their associated graph Laplacian matrix and subsequently clusters them. We train SpectralNet using a procedure that involves constrained stochastic optimization. Stochastic optimization allows it to scale to large datasets, while the constraints, which are implemented using a special-purpose output layer, allow us to keep the network output orthogonal. Moreover, the map learned by SpectralNet naturally generalizes the spectral embedding to unseen data points. To further improve the quality of the clustering, we replace the standard pairwise Gaussian affinities with affinities leaned from unlabeled data using a Siamese network. Additional improvement can be achieved by applying the network to code representations produced, e.g., by standard autoencoders. Our end-to-end learning procedure is fully unsupervised. In addition, we apply VC dimension theory to derive a lower bound on the size of SpectralNet. State-of-the-art clustering results are reported on the Reuters dataset.
