Photon counting radiation detectors have become an integral part of medical imaging modalities such as Positron Emission Tomography or Computed Tomography. One of the most promising detectors is the wide bandgap room temperature semiconductor detectors, which depends on the interaction gamma/x-ray photons with the detector material involves Compton scattering which leads to multiple interaction photon events (MIPEs) of a single photon. For semiconductor detectors like CdZnTeSe (CZTS), which have a high overlap of detected energies between Compton and photoelectric events, it is nearly impossible to distinguish between Compton scattered events from photoelectric events using conventional readout electronics or signal processing algorithms. Herein, we report a deep learning classifier CoPhNet that distinguishes between Compton scattering and photoelectric interactions of gamma/x-ray photons with CdZnTeSe (CZTS) semiconductor detectors. Our CoPhNet model was trained using simulated data to resemble actual CZTS detector pulses and validated using both simulated and experimental data. These results demonstrated that our CoPhNet model can achieve high classification accuracy over the simulated test set. It also holds its performance robustness under operating parameter shifts such as Signal-Noise-Ratio (SNR) and incident energy. Our work thus laid solid foundation for developing next-generation high energy gamma-rays detectors for better biomedical imaging.

Uveitis demands the precise diagnosis of anterior chamber inflammation (ACI) for optimal treatment. However, current diagnostic methods only rely on a limited single-modal disease perspective, which leads to poor performance. In this paper, we investigate a promising yet challenging way to fuse multimodal data for ACI diagnosis. Notably, existing fusion paradigms focus on empowering implicit modality interactions (i.e., self-attention and its variants), but neglect to inject explicit modality interactions, especially from clinical knowledge and imaging property. To this end, we propose a jointly Explicit and implicit Cross-Modal Interaction Network (EiCI-Net) for Anterior Chamber Inflammation Diagnosis that uses anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) images, slit-lamp images, and clinical data jointly. Specifically, we first develop CNN-Based Encoders and Tabular Processing Module (TPM) to extract efficient feature representations in different modalities. Then, we devise an Explicit Cross-Modal Interaction Module (ECIM) to generate attention maps as a kind of explicit clinical knowledge based on the tabular feature maps, then integrated them into the slit-lamp feature maps, allowing the CNN-Based Encoder to focus on more effective informativeness of the slit-lamp images. After that, the Implicit Cross-Modal Interaction Module (ICIM), a transformer-based network, further implicitly enhances modality interactions. Finally, we construct a considerable real-world dataset from our collaborative hospital and conduct sufficient experiments to demonstrate the superior performance of our proposed EiCI-Net compared with the state-of-the-art classification methods in various metrics.

Cognitive diagnosis models have been popularly used in fields such as education, psychology, and social sciences. While parametric likelihood estimation is a prevailing method for fitting cognitive diagnosis models, nonparametric methodologies are attracting increasing attention due to their ease of implementation and robustness, particularly when sample sizes are relatively small. However, existing clustering consistency results of the nonparametric estimation methods often rely on certain restrictive conditions, which may not be easily satisfied in practice. In this article, the clustering consistency of the general nonparametric classification method is reestablished under weaker and more practical conditions.

Measurement-based quantum computing (MBQC) is a promising quantum computing paradigm that performs computation through ``one-way'' measurements on entangled quantum qubits. It is widely used in photonic quantum computing (PQC), where the computation is carried out on photonic cluster states (i.e., a 2-D mesh of entangled photons). In MBQC-based PQC, the cluster state depth (i.e., the length of one-way measurements) to execute a quantum circuit plays an important role in the overall execution time and error. Thus, it is important to reduce the cluster state depth. In this paper, we propose FMCC, a compilation framework that employs dynamic programming to efficiently minimize the cluster state depth. Experimental results on five representative quantum algorithms show that FMCC achieves 53.6%, 60.6%, and 60.0% average depth reductions in small, medium, and large qubit counts compared to the state-of-the-art MBQC compilation frameworks.

Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown remarkable capabilities in general natural language processing tasks but often fall short in complex reasoning tasks. Recent studies have explored human-like problem-solving strategies, such as self-correct, to push further the boundary of single-model reasoning ability. In this work, we let a single model "step outside the box" by engaging multiple models to correct each other. We introduce a multi-agent collaboration strategy that emulates the academic peer review process. Each agent independently constructs its own solution, provides reviews on the solutions of others, and assigns confidence levels to its reviews. Upon receiving peer reviews, agents revise their initial solutions. Extensive experiments on three different types of reasoning tasks show that our collaboration approach delivers superior accuracy across all ten datasets compared to existing methods. Further study underscores the effectiveness of integrating confidence in reviews, demonstrates the superiority of feedback exchange over mere solution sharing, and highlights the role of capability and diversity in fostering successful collaboration.

This paper offers a perspective on using LLMs in mental health applications. It discusses the instability of generative models for prediction and the potential for generating hallucinatory outputs, underscoring the need for ongoing audits and evaluations to maintain their reliability and dependability. The paper also distinguishes between the often interchangeable terms ``explainability'' and ``interpretability'', advocating for developing inherently interpretable methods instead of relying on potentially hallucinated self-explanations generated by LLMs. Despite the advancements in LLMs, human counselors' empathetic understanding, nuanced interpretation, and contextual awareness remain irreplaceable in the sensitive and complex realm of mental health counseling. The use of LLMs should be approached with a judicious and considerate mindset, viewing them as tools that complement human expertise rather than seeking to replace it.

Open-loop stable limit cycles are foundational to the dynamics of legged robots. They impart a self-stabilizing character to the robot's gait, thus alleviating the need for compute-heavy feedback-based gait correction. This paper proposes a general approach to rapidly generate limit cycles with explicit stability constraints for a given dynamical system. In particular, we pose the problem of open-loop limit cycle stability as a single-stage constrained-optimization problem (COP), and use Direct Collocation to transcribe it into a nonlinear program (NLP) with closed-form expressions for constraints, objectives, and their gradients. The COP formulations of stability are developed based (1) on the spectral radius of a discrete return map, and (2) on the spectral radius of the system's monodromy matrix, where the spectral radius is bounded using different constraint-satisfaction formulations of the eigenvalue problem. We compare the performance and solution qualities of each approach, but specifically highlight the Schur decomposition of the monodromy matrix as a formulation which boasts wider applicability through weaker assumptions and attractive numerical convergence properties. Moreover, we present results from our experiments on a spring-loaded inverted pendulum model of a robot, where our method generated actuation trajectories for open-loop stable hopping in under 2 seconds (on the Intel Core i7-6700K), and produced energy-minimizing actuation trajectories even under tight stability constraints.

Abstract Visual Reasoning (AVR) comprises a wide selection of various problems similar to those used in human IQ tests. Recent years have brought dynamic progress in solving particular AVR tasks, however, in the contemporary literature AVR problems are largely dealt with in isolation, leading to highly specialized task-specific methods. With the aim of developing universal learning systems in the AVR domain, we propose the unified model for solving Single-Choice Abstract visual Reasoning tasks (SCAR), capable of solving various single-choice AVR tasks, without making any a priori assumptions about the task structure, in particular the number and location of panels. The proposed model relies on a novel Structure-Aware dynamic Layer (SAL), which adapts its weights to the structure of the considered AVR problem. Experiments conducted on Raven's Progressive Matrices, Visual Analogy Problems, and Odd One Out problems show that SCAR (SAL-based models, in general) effectively solves diverse AVR tasks, and its performance is on par with the state-of-the-art task-specific baselines. What is more, SCAR demonstrates effective knowledge reuse in multi-task and transfer learning settings. To our knowledge, this work is the first successful attempt to construct a general single-choice AVR solver relying on self-configurable architecture and unified solving method. With this work we aim to stimulate and foster progress on task-independent research paths in the AVR domain, with the long-term goal of development of a general AVR solver.

This paper studies the problem of forecasting general stochastic processes using a path-dependent extension of the Neural Jump ODE (NJ-ODE) framework \citep{herrera2021neural}. While NJ-ODE was the first framework to establish convergence guarantees for the prediction of irregularly observed time series, these results were limited to data stemming from It\^o-diffusions with complete observations, in particular Markov processes, where all coordinates are observed simultaneously. In this work, we generalise these results to generic, possibly non-Markovian or discontinuous, stochastic processes with incomplete observations, by utilising the reconstruction properties of the signature transform. These theoretical results are supported by empirical studies, where it is shown that the path-dependent NJ-ODE outperforms the original NJ-ODE framework in the case of non-Markovian data. Moreover, we show that PD-NJ-ODE can be applied successfully to classical stochastic filtering problems and to limit order book (LOB) data.

Recent artificial intelligence (AI) systems have reached milestones in "grand challenges" ranging from Go to protein-folding. The capability to retrieve medical knowledge, reason over it, and answer medical questions comparably to physicians has long been viewed as one such grand challenge. Large language models (LLMs) have catalyzed significant progress in medical question answering; Med-PaLM was the first model to exceed a "passing" score in US Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) style questions with a score of 67.2% on the MedQA dataset. However, this and other prior work suggested significant room for improvement, especially when models' answers were compared to clinicians' answers. Here we present Med-PaLM 2, which bridges these gaps by leveraging a combination of base LLM improvements (PaLM 2), medical domain finetuning, and prompting strategies including a novel ensemble refinement approach. Med-PaLM 2 scored up to 86.5% on the MedQA dataset, improving upon Med-PaLM by over 19% and setting a new state-of-the-art. We also observed performance approaching or exceeding state-of-the-art across MedMCQA, PubMedQA, and MMLU clinical topics datasets. We performed detailed human evaluations on long-form questions along multiple axes relevant to clinical applications. In pairwise comparative ranking of 1066 consumer medical questions, physicians preferred Med-PaLM 2 answers to those produced by physicians on eight of nine axes pertaining to clinical utility (p < 0.001). We also observed significant improvements compared to Med-PaLM on every evaluation axis (p < 0.001) on newly introduced datasets of 240 long-form "adversarial" questions to probe LLM limitations. While further studies are necessary to validate the efficacy of these models in real-world settings, these results highlight rapid progress towards physician-level performance in medical question answering.

Understanding causality helps to structure interventions to achieve specific goals and enables predictions under interventions. With the growing importance of learning causal relationships, causal discovery tasks have transitioned from using traditional methods to infer potential causal structures from observational data to the field of pattern recognition involved in deep learning. The rapid accumulation of massive data promotes the emergence of causal search methods with brilliant scalability. Existing summaries of causal discovery methods mainly focus on traditional methods based on constraints, scores and FCMs, there is a lack of perfect sorting and elaboration for deep learning-based methods, also lacking some considers and exploration of causal discovery methods from the perspective of variable paradigms. Therefore, we divide the possible causal discovery tasks into three types according to the variable paradigm and give the definitions of the three tasks respectively, define and instantiate the relevant datasets for each task and the final causal model constructed at the same time, then reviews the main existing causal discovery methods for different tasks. Finally, we propose some roadmaps from different perspectives for the current research gaps in the field of causal discovery and point out future research directions.
