Accountability in the workplace is critically important and remains a challenging problem, especially with respect to workplace safety management. In this paper, we introduce a novel notion, the Internet of Responsibilities, for accountability management. Our method sorts through the list of responsibilities with respect to hazardous positions. The positions are interconnected using directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) indicating the hierarchy of responsibilities in the organization. In addition, the system detects and collects responsibilities, and represents risk areas in terms of the positions of the responsibility nodes. Finally, an automatic reminder and assignment system is used to enforce a strict responsibility control without human intervention. Using blockchain technology, we further extend our system with the capability to store, recover and encrypt responsibility data. We show that through the application of the Internet of Responsibility network model driven by Big Data, enterprise and government agencies can attain a highly secured and safe workplace. Therefore, our model offers a combination of interconnected responsibilities, accountability, monitoring, and safety which is crucial for the protection of employees and the success of organizations.
A comprehensive understanding of the organizational principles in the human brain requires, among other factors, well-quantifiable descriptors of nerve fiber architecture. Three-dimensional polarized light imaging (3D-PLI) is a microscopic imaging technique that enables insights into the fine-grained organization of myelinated nerve fibers with high resolution. Descriptors characterizing the fiber architecture observed in 3D-PLI would enable downstream analysis tasks such as multimodal correlation studies, clustering, and mapping. However, best practices for observer-independent characterization of fiber architecture in 3D-PLI are not yet available. To this end, we propose the application of a fully data-driven approach to characterize nerve fiber architecture in 3D-PLI images using self-supervised representation learning. We introduce a 3D-Context Contrastive Learning (CL-3D) objective that utilizes the spatial neighborhood of texture examples across histological brain sections of a 3D reconstructed volume to sample positive pairs for contrastive learning. We combine this sampling strategy with specifically designed image augmentations to gain robustness to typical variations in 3D-PLI parameter maps. The approach is demonstrated for the 3D reconstructed occipital lobe of a vervet monkey brain. We show that extracted features are highly sensitive to different configurations of nerve fibers, yet robust to variations between consecutive brain sections arising from histological processing. We demonstrate their practical applicability for retrieving clusters of homogeneous fiber architecture and performing data mining for interactively selected templates of specific components of fiber architecture such as U-fibers.
Sliced optimal transport, which is basically a Radon transform followed by one-dimensional optimal transport, became popular in various applications due to its efficient computation. In this paper, we deal with sliced optimal transport on the sphere $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}$ and on the rotation group SO(3). We propose a parallel slicing procedure of the sphere which requires again only optimal transforms on the line. We analyze the properties of the corresponding parallelly sliced optimal transport, which provides in particular a rotationally invariant metric on the spherical probability measures. For SO(3), we introduce a new two-dimensional Radon transform and develop its singular value decomposition. Based on this, we propose a sliced optimal transport on SO(3). As Wasserstein distances were extensively used in barycenter computations, we derive algorithms to compute the barycenters with respect to our new sliced Wasserstein distances and provide synthetic numerical examples on the 2-sphere that demonstrate their behavior both the free and fixed support setting of discrete spherical measures. In terms of computational speed, they outperform the existing methods for semicircular slicing as well as the regularized Wasserstein barycenters.
We provide an overview of three different query languages whose objective is to specify properties on the highly popular formalisms of fault trees (FTs) and attack trees (ATs). These are BFL, a Boolean Logic for FTs, PFL, a probabilistic extension of BFL and ATM, a logic for security metrics on ATs. We validate the framework composed by these three logics by applying them to the case study of a water distribution network. We extend the FT for this network - found in the literature - and we propose to model the system under analysis with the Fault Trees/Attack Trees (FT/ATs) formalism, combining both FTs and ATs in a unique model. Furthermore, we propose a novel combination of the showcased logics to account for queries that jointly consider both the FT and the AT of the model, integrating influences of attacks on failure probabilities of different components. Finally, we extend the domain specific language for PFL with novel constructs to capture the interplay between metrics of attacks - e.g., "cost", success probabilities - and failure probabilities in the system.
Solving partially observable Markov decision processes (POMDPs) with high dimensional and continuous observations, such as camera images, is required for many real life robotics and planning problems. Recent researches suggested machine learned probabilistic models as observation models, but their use is currently too computationally expensive for online deployment. We deal with the question of what would be the implication of using simplified observation models for planning, while retaining formal guarantees on the quality of the solution. Our main contribution is a novel probabilistic bound based on a statistical total variation distance of the simplified model. We show that it bounds the theoretical POMDP value w.r.t. original model, from the empirical planned value with the simplified model, by generalizing recent results of particle-belief MDP concentration bounds. Our calculations can be separated into offline and online parts, and we arrive at formal guarantees without having to access the costly model at all during planning, which is also a novel result. Finally, we demonstrate in simulation how to integrate the bound into the routine of an existing continuous online POMDP solver.
The problem of relay selection is pivotal in the realm of cooperative communication. However, this issue has not been thoroughly examined, particularly when the background noise is assumed to possess an impulsive characteristic with consistent memory as observed in smart grid communications and some other wireless communication scenarios. In this paper, we investigate the impact of this specific type of noise on the performance of cooperative Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) with the Decode and Forward (DF) relaying scheme, considering Symbol-Error-Rate (SER) and battery power consumption fairness across all nodes as the performance metrics. We introduce two innovative relay selection methods that depend on noise state detection and the residual battery power of each relay. The first method encompasses the adaptation of the Max-Min criterion to this specific context, whereas the second employs Reinforcement Learning (RL) to surmount this challenge. Our empirical outcomes demonstrate that the impacts of bursty impulsive noise on the SER performance can be effectively mitigated and that a balance in battery power consumption among all nodes can be established using the proposed methods.
Robotic coaches have been recently investigated to promote mental well-being in various contexts such as workplaces and homes. With the widespread use of Large Language Models (LLMs), HRI researchers are called to consider language appropriateness when using such generated language for robotic mental well-being coaches in the real world. Therefore, this paper presents the first work that investigated the language appropriateness of robot mental well-being coach in the workplace. To this end, we conducted an empirical study that involved 17 employees who interacted over 4 weeks with a robotic mental well-being coach equipped with LLM-based capabilities. After the study, we individually interviewed them and we conducted a focus group of 1.5 hours with 11 of them. The focus group consisted of: i) an ice-breaking activity, ii) evaluation of robotic coach language appropriateness in various scenarios, and iii) listing shoulds and shouldn'ts for designing appropriate robotic coach language for mental well-being. From our qualitative evaluation, we found that a language-appropriate robotic coach should (1) ask deep questions which explore feelings of the coachees, rather than superficial questions, (2) express and show emotional and empathic understanding of the context, and (3) not make any assumptions without clarifying with follow-up questions to avoid bias and stereotyping. These results can inform the design of language-appropriate robotic coach to promote mental well-being in real-world contexts.
The attribution of question answering is to provide citations for supporting generated statements, and has attracted wide research attention. The current methods for automatically evaluating the attribution, which are often based on Large Language Models (LLMs), are still inadequate, particularly in recognizing subtle differences between attributions, and complex relationships between citations and statements. To compare these attribution evaluation methods and develop new ones, we introduce a set of fine-grained categories (i.e., supportive, insufficient, contradictory and irrelevant) for measuring the attribution, and develop a Complex Attributed Question Answering (CAQA) benchmark by leveraging knowledge graphs (KGs) for automatically generating attributions of different categories to question-answer pairs. Our analysis reveals that existing evaluators perform poorly under fine-grained attribution settings and exhibit weaknesses in complex citation-statement reasoning. Our CAQA benchmark, validated with human annotations, emerges as a promising tool for selecting and developing LLM attribution evaluators.
The agricultural sector is facing mounting demands to enhance energy efficiency within farm enterprises, concurrent with a steady escalation in electricity costs. This paper focuses on modelling the adoption rate of photovoltaic (PV) energy within the dairy sector in Ireland. An agent-based modelling approach is introduced to estimate the adoption rate. The model considers grid energy prices, revenue, costs, and maintenance expenses to calculate the probability of PV adoption. The ABM outputs estimate that by year 2022, 2.45% of dairy farmers have installed PV. This is a 0.45% difference to the actual PV adoption rate in year 2022. This validates the proposed ABM. The paper demonstrates the increasing interest in PV systems as evidenced by the rate of adoption, shedding light on the potential advantages of PV energy adoption in agriculture. This study possesses the potential to forecast future rates of PV energy adoption among dairy farmers. It establishes a groundwork for further research on predicting and understanding the factors influencing the adoption of renewable energy.
In pace with developments in the research field of artificial intelligence, knowledge graphs (KGs) have attracted a surge of interest from both academia and industry. As a representation of semantic relations between entities, KGs have proven to be particularly relevant for natural language processing (NLP), experiencing a rapid spread and wide adoption within recent years. Given the increasing amount of research work in this area, several KG-related approaches have been surveyed in the NLP research community. However, a comprehensive study that categorizes established topics and reviews the maturity of individual research streams remains absent to this day. Contributing to closing this gap, we systematically analyzed 507 papers from the literature on KGs in NLP. Our survey encompasses a multifaceted review of tasks, research types, and contributions. As a result, we present a structured overview of the research landscape, provide a taxonomy of tasks, summarize our findings, and highlight directions for future work.
This work considers the question of how convenient access to copious data impacts our ability to learn causal effects and relations. In what ways is learning causality in the era of big data different from -- or the same as -- the traditional one? To answer this question, this survey provides a comprehensive and structured review of both traditional and frontier methods in learning causality and relations along with the connections between causality and machine learning. This work points out on a case-by-case basis how big data facilitates, complicates, or motivates each approach.
