We develop a novel randomised block coordinate primal-dual algorithm for a class of non-smooth ill-posed convex programs. Lying in the midway between the celebrated Chambolle-Pock primal-dual algorithm and Tseng's accelerated proximal gradient method, we establish global convergence of the last iterate as well optimal $O(1/k)$ and $O(1/k^{2})$ complexity rates in the convex and strongly convex case, respectively, $k$ being the iteration count. Motivated by the increased complexity in the control of distribution level electric power systems, we test the performance of our method on a second-order cone relaxation of an AC-OPF problem. Distributed control is achieved via the distributed locational marginal prices (DLMPs), which are obtained \revise{as} dual variables in our optimisation framework.
The numerical solution of continuum damage mechanics (CDM) problems suffers from convergence-related challenges during the material softening stage, and consequently existing iterative solvers are subject to a trade-off between computational expense and solution accuracy. In this work, we present a novel unified arc-length (UAL) method, and we derive the formulation of the analytical tangent matrix and governing system of equations for both local and non-local gradient damage problems. Unlike existing versions of arc-length solvers that monolithically scale the external force vector, the proposed method treats the latter as an independent variable and determines the position of the system on the equilibrium path based on all the nodal variations of the external force vector. This approach renders the proposed solver substantially more efficient and robust than existing solvers used in CDM problems. We demonstrate the considerable advantages of the proposed algorithm through several benchmark 1D problems with sharp snap-backs and 2D examples under various boundary conditions and loading scenarios. The proposed UAL approach exhibits a superior ability of overcoming critical increments along the equilibrium path. Moreover, the proposed UAL method is 1-2 orders of magnitude faster than force-controlled arc-length and monolithic Newton-Raphson solvers.
This paper introduces a novel one-stage end-to-end detector specifically designed to detect small lesions in medical images. Precise localization of small lesions presents challenges due to their appearance and the diverse contextual backgrounds in which they are found. To address this, our approach introduces a new type of pixel-based anchor that dynamically moves towards the targeted lesion for detection. We refer to this new architecture as GravityNet, and the novel anchors as gravity points since they appear to be "attracted" by the lesions. We conducted experiments on two well-established medical problems involving small lesions to evaluate the performance of the proposed approach: microcalcifications detection in digital mammograms and microaneurysms detection in digital fundus images. Our method demonstrates promising results in effectively detecting small lesions in these medical imaging tasks.
Most existing methods for unsupervised industrial anomaly detection train a separate model for each object category. This kind of approach can easily capture the category-specific feature distributions, but results in high storage cost and low training efficiency. In this paper, we propose a unified mixed-attention auto encoder (MAAE) to implement multi-class anomaly detection with a single model. To alleviate the performance degradation due to the diverse distribution patterns of different categories, we employ spatial attentions and channel attentions to effectively capture the global category information and model the feature distributions of multiple classes. Furthermore, to simulate the realistic noises on features and preserve the surface semantics of objects from different categories which are essential for detecting the subtle anomalies, we propose an adaptive noise generator and a multi-scale fusion module for the pre-trained features. MAAE delivers remarkable performances on the benchmark dataset compared with the state-of-the-art methods.
Surface defect inspection is of great importance for industrial manufacture and production. Though defect inspection methods based on deep learning have made significant progress, there are still some challenges for these methods, such as indistinguishable weak defects and defect-like interference in the background. To address these issues, we propose a transformer network with multi-stage CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) feature injection for surface defect segmentation, which is a UNet-like structure named CINFormer. CINFormer presents a simple yet effective feature integration mechanism that injects the multi-level CNN features of the input image into different stages of the transformer network in the encoder. This can maintain the merit of CNN capturing detailed features and that of transformer depressing noises in the background, which facilitates accurate defect detection. In addition, CINFormer presents a Top-K self-attention module to focus on tokens with more important information about the defects, so as to further reduce the impact of the redundant background. Extensive experiments conducted on the surface defect datasets DAGM 2007, Magnetic tile, and NEU show that the proposed CINFormer achieves state-of-the-art performance in defect detection.
In this paper, we propose a fully discrete soft thresholding trigonometric polynomial approximation on $[-\pi,\pi],$ named Lasso trigonometric interpolation. This approximation is an $\ell_1$-regularized discrete least squares approximation under the same conditions of classical trigonometric interpolation on an equidistant grid. Lasso trigonometric interpolation is sparse and meanwhile it is an efficient tool to deal with noisy data. We theoretically analyze Lasso trigonometric interpolation for continuous periodic function. The principal results show that the $L_2$ error bound of Lasso trigonometric interpolation is less than that of classical trigonometric interpolation, which improved the robustness of trigonometric interpolation. This paper also presents numerical results on Lasso trigonometric interpolation on $[-\pi,\pi]$, with or without the presence of data errors.
A rigidity circuit (in 2D) is a minimal dependent set in the rigidity matroid, i.e. a minimal graph supporting a non-trivial stress in any generic placement of its vertices in $\mathbb R^2$. Any rigidity circuit on $n\geq 5$ vertices can be obtained from rigidity circuits on a fewer number of vertices by applying the combinatorial resultant (CR) operation. The inverse operation is called a combinatorial resultant decomposition (CR-decomp). Any rigidity circuit on $n\geq 5$ vertices can be successively decomposed into smaller circuits, until the complete graphs $K_4$ are reached. This sequence of CR-decomps has the structure of a rooted binary tree called the combinatorial resultant tree (CR-tree). A CR-tree encodes an elimination strategy for computing circuit polynomials via Sylvester resultants. Different CR-trees lead to elimination strategies that can vary greatly in time and memory consumption. It is an open problem to establish criteria for optimal CR-trees, or at least to characterize those CR-trees that lead to good elimination strategies. In [12] we presented an algorithm for enumerating CR-trees where we give the algorithms for decomposing 3-connected rigidity circuits in polynomial time. In this paper we focus on those circuits that are not 3-connected, which we simply call 2-connected. In order to enumerate CR-decomps of 2-connected circuits $G$, a brute force exp-time search has to be performed among the subgraphs induced by the subsets of $V(G)$. This exp-time bottleneck is not present in the 3-connected case. In this paper we will argue that we do not have to account for all possible CR-decomps of 2-connected rigidity circuits to find a good elimination strategy; we only have to account for those CR-decomps that are a 2-split, all of which can be enumerated in polynomial time. We present algorithms and computational evidence in support of this heuristic.
We consider a one-dimensional singularly perturbed 4th order problem with the additional feature of a shift term. An expansion into a smooth term, boundary layers and an inner layer yields a formal solution decomposition, and together with a stability result we have estimates for the subsequent numerical analysis. With classical layer adapted meshes we present a numerical method, that achieves supercloseness and optimal convergence orders in the associated energy norm. We also consider coarser meshes in view of the weak layers. Some numerical examples conclude the paper and support the theory.
We propose a parallel (distributed) version of the spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) technique. The parallel SPOD algorithm distributes the spatial dimension of the dataset preserving time. This approach is adopted to preserve the non-distributed fast Fourier transform of the data in time, thereby avoiding the associated bottlenecks. The parallel SPOD algorithm is implemented in the PySPOD (//github.com/MathEXLab/PySPOD) library and makes use of the standard message passing interface (MPI) library, implemented in Python via mpi4py (//mpi4py.readthedocs.io/en/stable/). An extensive performance evaluation of the parallel package is provided, including strong and weak scalability analyses. The open-source library allows the analysis of large datasets of interest across the scientific community. Here, we present applications in fluid dynamics and geophysics, that are extremely difficult (if not impossible) to achieve without a parallel algorithm. This work opens the path toward modal analyses of big quasi-stationary data, helping to uncover new unexplored spatio-temporal patterns.
Point source localisation is generally modelled as a Lasso-type problem on measures. However, optimisation methods in non-Hilbert spaces, such as the space of Radon measures, are much less developed than in Hilbert spaces. Most numerical algorithms for point source localisation are based on the Frank-Wolfe conditional gradient method, for which ad hoc convergence theory is developed. We develop extensions of proximal-type methods to spaces of measures. This includes forward-backward splitting, its inertial version, and primal-dual proximal splitting. Their convergence proofs follow standard patterns. We demonstrate their numerical efficacy.
We propose an approach to compute inner and outer-approximations of the sets of values satisfying constraints expressed as arbitrarily quantified formulas. Such formulas arise for instance when specifying important problems in control such as robustness, motion planning or controllers comparison. We propose an interval-based method which allows for tractable but tight approximations. We demonstrate its applicability through a series of examples and benchmarks using a prototype implementation.
