Angluin's L$^*$ algorithm learns the minimal deterministic finite automaton (DFA) of a regular language using membership and equivalence queries. Its probabilistic approximatively correct (PAC) version substitutes an equivalence query by numerous random membership queries to get a high level confidence to the answer. Thus it can be applied to any kind of device and may be viewed as an algorithm for synthesizing an automaton abstracting the behavior of the device based on observations. Here we are interested on how Angluin's PAC learning algorithm behaves for devices which are obtained from a DFA by introducing some noise. More precisely we study whether Angluin's algorithm reduces the noise and produces a DFA closer to the original one than the noisy device. We propose several ways to introduce the noise: (1) the noisy device inverts the classification of words w.r.t. the DFA with a small probability, (2) the noisy device modifies with a small probability the letters of the word before asking its classification w.r.t. the DFA, (3) the noisy device combines the classification of a word w.r.t. the DFA and its classification w.r.t. a counter automaton, and (4) the noisy DFA is obtained by a random process from two DFA such that the language of the first one is included in the second one. Then when a word is accepted (resp. rejected) by the first (resp. second) one, it is also accepted (resp. rejected) and in the remaining cases, it is accepted with probability 0.5. Our main experimental contributions consist in showing that: (1) Angluin's algorithm behaves well whenever the noisy device is produced by a random process, (2) but poorly with a structured noise, and, that (3) is able to eliminate pathological behaviours specified in a regular way. Theoretically, we show that randomness almost surely yields systems with non-recursively enumerable languages.

Recent generalizations of the Hopfield model of associative memories are able to store a number $P$ of random patterns that grows exponentially with the number $N$ of neurons, $P=\exp(\alpha N)$. Besides the huge storage capacity, another interesting feature of these networks is their connection to the attention mechanism which is part of the Transformer architectures widely applied in deep learning. In this work, we study a generic family of pattern ensembles using a statistical mechanics analysis which gives exact asymptotic thresholds for the retrieval of a typical pattern, $\alpha_1$, and lower bounds for the maximum of the load $\alpha$ for which all patterns can be retrieved, $\alpha_c$, as well as sizes of attraction basins. We discuss in detail the cases of Gaussian and spherical patterns, and show that they display rich and qualitatively different phase diagrams.

Memory bandwidth is known to be a performance bottleneck for FPGA accelerators, especially when they deal with large multi-dimensional data-sets. A large body of work focuses on reducing of off-chip transfers, but few authors try to improve the efficiency of transfers. This paper addresses the later issue by proposing (i) a compiler-based approach to accelerator's data layout to maximize contiguous access to off-chip memory, and (ii) data packing and runtime compression techniques that take advantage of this layout to further improve memory performance. We show that our approach can decrease the I/O cycles up to $7\times$ compared to un-optimized memory accesses.

Knowledge Organization (KO) and Knowledge Representation (KR) have been the two mainstream methodologies of knowledge modelling in the Information Science community and the Artificial Intelligence community, respectively. The facet-analytical tradition of KO has developed an exhaustive set of guiding canons for ensuring quality in organising and managing knowledge but has remained limited in terms of technology-driven activities to expand its scope and services beyond the bibliographic universe of knowledge. KR, on the other hand, boasts of a robust ecosystem of technologies and technology-driven service design which can be tailored to model any entity or scale to any service in the entire universe of knowledge. This paper elucidates both the facet-analytical KO and KR methodologies in detail and provides a functional mapping between them. Out of the mapping, the paper proposes an integrated KR-enriched KO methodology with all the standard components of a KO methodology plus the advanced technologies provided by the KR approach. The practical benefits of the methodological integration has been exemplified through the flagship application of the Digital University at the University of Trento, Italy.

Symbols (or more broadly, non-natural language textual representations) such as numerical sequences, molecular formulas, and table delimiters widely exist, playing important roles in various tasks such as abstract reasoning, chemical property prediction, and table question answering. Despite the impressive natural language comprehension capabilities of large language models (LLMs), their reasoning abilities for symbols remain inadequate, which could attributed to the difference between symbol representations and general natural languages. We propose symbol-to-language (S2L), a tuning-free method that enables large language models to solve symbol-related problems with information expressed in natural language. Specifically, S2L first converts the symbols involved to language-based representations, which can be implemented by prompting LLMs or leveraging external tools, then these language-based representations are integrated into the original problem via direct substitution or concatenation, serving as useful input information for LLMs. We evaluate the S2L method using both API-based (GPT-4, ChatGPT) and open-source (OpenChat) models over eight symbol-related tasks, ranging from symbol-only abstract reasoning to sentiment analysis in social media. Experimental results show that S2L consistently leads to superior performance. For example, by employing S2L for GPT-4, there can be average significant improvements of +21.9% and +9.5% for subtasks in 1D-ARC and Dyck language, respectively. Semantic segmentation and stereo matching are two essential components of 3D environmental perception systems for autonomous driving. Nevertheless, conventional approaches often address these two problems independently, employing separate models for each task. This approach poses practical limitations in real-world scenarios, particularly when computational resources are scarce or real-time performance is imperative. Hence, in this article, we introduce S$^3$M-Net, a novel joint learning framework developed to perform semantic segmentation and stereo matching simultaneously. Specifically, S$^3$M-Net shares the features extracted from RGB images between both tasks, resulting in an improved overall scene understanding capability. This feature sharing process is realized using a feature fusion adaption (FFA) module, which effectively transforms the shared features into semantic space and subsequently fuses them with the encoded disparity features. The entire joint learning framework is trained by minimizing a novel semantic consistency-guided (SCG) loss, which places emphasis on the structural consistency in both tasks. Extensive experimental results conducted on the vKITTI2 and KITTI datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed joint learning framework and its superior performance compared to other state-of-the-art single-task networks. Objective: The objective of this work is to introduce and demonstrate the effectiveness of a novel sensing modality for contact detection between an off-the-shelf aspiration catheter and a thrombus. Methods: A custom robotic actuator with a pressure sensor was used to generate an oscillatory vacuum excitation and sense the pressure inside the extracorporeal portion of the catheter. Vacuum pressure profiles and robotic motion data were used to train a support vector machine (SVM) classification model to detect contact between the aspiration catheter tip and a mock thrombus. Validation consisted of benchtop accuracy verification, as well as user study comparison to the current standard of angiographic presentation. Results: Benchtop accuracy of the sensing modality was shown to be 99.67%. The user study demonstrated statistically significant improvement in identifying catheter-thrombus contact compared to the current standard. The odds ratio of successful detection of clot contact was 2.86 (p=0.03) when using the proposed sensory method compared to without it. Conclusion: The results of this work indicate that the proposed sensing modality can offer intraoperative feedback to interventionalists that can improve their ability to detect contact between the distal tip of a catheter and a thrombus. Significance: By offering a relatively low-cost technology that affords off-the-shelf aspiration catheters as clot-detecting sensors, interventionalists can improve the first-pass effect of the mechanical thrombectomy procedure while reducing procedural times and mental burden.

Despite their popularity in non-English NLP, multilingual language models often underperform monolingual ones due to inter-language competition for model parameters. We propose Cross-lingual Expert Language Models (X-ELM), which mitigate this competition by independently training language models on subsets of the multilingual corpus. This process specializes X-ELMs to different languages while remaining effective as a multilingual ensemble. Our experiments show that when given the same compute budget, X-ELM outperforms jointly trained multilingual models across all considered languages and that these gains transfer to downstream tasks. X-ELM provides additional benefits over performance improvements: new experts can be iteratively added, adapting X-ELM to new languages without catastrophic forgetting. Furthermore, training is asynchronous, reducing the hardware requirements for multilingual training and democratizing multilingual modeling.

Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI), as a new and promising identity management paradigm, needs mechanisms that can ease a gradual transition of existing services and developers towards it. Systems that bridge the gap between SSI and established identity and access management have been proposed but still lack adoption. We argue that they are all some combination of too complex, locked into specific ecosystems, have no source code available, or are not sufficiently documented. We propose a comparatively simple system that enables SSI-based sign-ins for services that support the widespread OpenID Connect or OAuth 2.0 protocols. Its handling of claims is highly configurable through a single policy and designed for cross-device authentication flows involving a smartphone identity wallet. For external interfaces, we solely rely on open standards, such as the recent OpenID for Verifiable Credentials standards. We provide our implementation as open-source software intended for prototyping and as a reference. Also, we contribute a detailed technical discussion of our particular sign-in flow. To prove its feasibility, we have successfully tested it with existing software and realistic hardware.

Pre-trained Language Models (PLMs) which are trained on large text corpus via self-supervised learning method, have yielded promising performance on various tasks in Natural Language Processing (NLP). However, though PLMs with huge parameters can effectively possess rich knowledge learned from massive training text and benefit downstream tasks at the fine-tuning stage, they still have some limitations such as poor reasoning ability due to the lack of external knowledge. Research has been dedicated to incorporating knowledge into PLMs to tackle these issues. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review of Knowledge-Enhanced Pre-trained Language Models (KE-PLMs) to provide a clear insight into this thriving field. We introduce appropriate taxonomies respectively for Natural Language Understanding (NLU) and Natural Language Generation (NLG) to highlight these two main tasks of NLP. For NLU, we divide the types of knowledge into four categories: linguistic knowledge, text knowledge, knowledge graph (KG), and rule knowledge. The KE-PLMs for NLG are categorized into KG-based and retrieval-based methods. Finally, we point out some promising future directions of KE-PLMs.
