In the age of music streaming platforms, the task of automatically tagging music audio has garnered significant attention, driving researchers to devise methods aimed at enhancing performance metrics on standard datasets. Most recent approaches rely on deep neural networks, which, despite their impressive performance, possess opacity, making it challenging to elucidate their output for a given input. While the issue of interpretability has been emphasized in other fields like medicine, it has not received attention in music-related tasks. In this study, we explored the relevance of interpretability in the context of automatic music tagging. We constructed a workflow that incorporates three different information extraction techniques: a) leveraging symbolic knowledge, b) utilizing auxiliary deep neural networks, and c) employing signal processing to extract perceptual features from audio files. These features were subsequently used to train an interpretable machine-learning model for tag prediction. We conducted experiments on two datasets, namely the MTG-Jamendo dataset and the GTZAN dataset. Our method surpassed the performance of baseline models in both tasks and, in certain instances, demonstrated competitiveness with the current state-of-the-art. We conclude that there are use cases where the deterioration in performance is outweighed by the value of interpretability.

Hand motion capture data is now relatively easy to obtain, even for complicated grasps; however this data is of limited use without the ability to retarget it onto the hands of a specific character or robot. The target hand may differ dramatically in geometry, number of degrees of freedom (DOFs), or number of fingers. We present a simple, but effective framework capable of kinematically retargeting multiple human hand-object manipulations from a publicly available dataset to a wide assortment of kinematically and morphologically diverse target hands through the exploitation of contact areas. We do so by formulating the retarget operation as a non-isometric shape matching problem and use a combination of both surface contact and marker data to progressively estimate, refine, and fit the final target hand trajectory using inverse kinematics (IK). Foundational to our framework is the introduction of a novel shape matching process, which we show enables predictable and robust transfer of contact data over full manipulations while providing an intuitive means for artists to specify correspondences with relatively few inputs. We validate our framework through thirty demonstrations across five different hand shapes and six motions of different objects. We additionally compare our method against existing hand retargeting approaches. Finally, we demonstrate our method enabling novel capabilities such as object substitution and the ability to visualize the impact of design choices over full trajectories.

Audio-Language models jointly learn multimodal text and audio representations that enable Zero-Shot inference. Models rely on the encoders to create powerful representations of the input and generalize to multiple tasks ranging from sounds, music, and speech. Although models have achieved remarkable performance, there is still a performance gap with task-specific models. In this paper, we propose a Contrastive Language-Audio Pretraining model that is pretrained with a diverse collection of 4.6M audio-text pairs employing two innovative encoders for Zero-Shot inference. To learn audio representations, we trained an audio encoder on 22 audio tasks, instead of the standard training of sound event classification. To learn language representations, we trained an autoregressive decoder-only model instead of the standard encoder-only models. Then, the audio and language representations are brought into a joint multimodal space using Contrastive Learning. We used our encoders to improve the downstream performance by a margin. We extensively evaluated the generalization of our representations on 26 downstream tasks, the largest in the literature. Our model achieves state of the art results in several tasks leading the way towards general-purpose audio representations.

Record Linkage is the process of identifying and unifying records from various independent data sources. Existing strategies, which can be either deterministic or probabilistic, often fail to link records satisfactorily under uncertainty. This paper describes an indigenously (locally) developed fuzzy linkage method, based on fuzzy set techniques, which can effectively account for this uncertainty prevalent in the disparate data sources and address the shortcomings of the existing approaches. Extensive testing, evaluation and comparisons have demonstrated the efficacy of this fuzzy approach for record linkages.

Switchback experimental design, wherein a single unit (e.g., a whole system) is exposed to a single random treatment for interspersed blocks of time, tackles both cross-unit and temporal interference. Sound event detection (SED) is essential for recognizing specific sounds and their temporal locations within acoustic signals. This becomes challenging particularly for on-device applications, where computational resources are limited. To address this issue, we introduce a novel framework referred to as dual knowledge distillation for developing efficient SED systems in this work. Our proposed dual knowledge distillation commences with temporal-averaging knowledge distillation (TAKD), utilizing a mean student model derived from the temporal averaging of the student model's parameters. This allows the student model to indirectly learn from a pre-trained teacher model, ensuring a stable knowledge distillation. Subsequently, we introduce embedding-enhanced feature distillation (EEFD), which involves incorporating an embedding distillation layer within the student model to bolster contextual learning. On DCASE 2023 Task 4A public evaluation dataset, our proposed SED system with dual knowledge distillation having merely one-third of the baseline model's parameters, demonstrates superior performance in terms of PSDS1 and PSDS2. This highlights the importance of proposed dual knowledge distillation for compact SED systems, which can be ideal for edge devices.

Retrieving the most similar vector embeddings to a given query among a massive collection of vectors has long been a key component of countless real-world applications. The recently introduced Retrieval-Augmented Generation is one of the most prominent examples. For many of these applications, the database evolves over time by inserting new data and removing outdated data. In these cases, the retrieval problem is known as streaming similarity search. While Locally-Adaptive Vector Quantization (LVQ), a highly efficient vector compression method, yields state-of-the-art search performance for non-evolving databases, its usefulness in the streaming setting has not been yet established. In this work, we study LVQ in streaming similarity search. In support of our evaluation, we introduce two improvements of LVQ: Turbo LVQ and multi-means LVQ that boost its search performance by up to 28% and 27%, respectively. Our studies show that LVQ and its new variants enable blazing fast vector search, outperforming its closest competitor by up to 9.4x for identically distributed data and by up to 8.8x under the challenging scenario of data distribution shifts (i.e., where the statistical distribution of the data changes over time). We release our contributions as part of Scalable Vector Search, an open-source library for high-performance similarity search.

The ability to automatically generate music that appropriately matches an arbitrary input track is a challenging task. We present a novel controllable system for generating single stems to accompany musical mixes of arbitrary length. At the core of our method are audio autoencoders that efficiently compress audio waveform samples into invertible latent representations, and a conditional latent diffusion model that takes as input the latent encoding of a mix and generates the latent encoding of a corresponding stem. To provide control over the timbre of generated samples, we introduce a technique to ground the latent space to a user-provided reference style during diffusion sampling. For further improving audio quality, we adapt classifier-free guidance to avoid distortions at high guidance strengths when generating an unbounded latent space. We train our model on a dataset of pairs of mixes and matching bass stems. Quantitative experiments demonstrate that, given an input mix, the proposed system can generate basslines with user-specified timbres. Our controllable conditional audio generation framework represents a significant step forward in creating generative AI tools to assist musicians in music production.

We propose a framework to learn semantics from raw audio signals using two types of representations, encoding contextual and phonetic information respectively. Specifically, we introduce a speech-to-unit processing pipeline that captures two types of representations with different time resolutions. For the language model, we adopt a dual-channel architecture to incorporate both types of representation. We also present new training objectives, masked context reconstruction and masked context prediction, that push models to learn semantics effectively. Experiments on the sSIMI metric of Zero Resource Speech Benchmark 2021 and Fluent Speech Command dataset show our framework learns semantics better than models trained with only one type of representation.

Deep learning has revolutionized many machine learning tasks in recent years, ranging from image classification and video processing to speech recognition and natural language understanding. The data in these tasks are typically represented in the Euclidean space. However, there is an increasing number of applications where data are generated from non-Euclidean domains and are represented as graphs with complex relationships and interdependency between objects. The complexity of graph data has imposed significant challenges on existing machine learning algorithms. Recently, many studies on extending deep learning approaches for graph data have emerged. In this survey, we provide a comprehensive overview of graph neural networks (GNNs) in data mining and machine learning fields. We propose a new taxonomy to divide the state-of-the-art graph neural networks into different categories. With a focus on graph convolutional networks, we review alternative architectures that have recently been developed; these learning paradigms include graph attention networks, graph autoencoders, graph generative networks, and graph spatial-temporal networks. We further discuss the applications of graph neural networks across various domains and summarize the open source codes and benchmarks of the existing algorithms on different learning tasks. Finally, we propose potential research directions in this fast-growing field.

We present SlowFast networks for video recognition. Our model involves (i) a Slow pathway, operating at low frame rate, to capture spatial semantics, and (ii) a Fast pathway, operating at high frame rate, to capture motion at fine temporal resolution. The Fast pathway can be made very lightweight by reducing its channel capacity, yet can learn useful temporal information for video recognition. Our models achieve strong performance for both action classification and detection in video, and large improvements are pin-pointed as contributions by our SlowFast concept. We report 79.0% accuracy on the Kinetics dataset without using any pre-training, largely surpassing the previous best results of this kind. On AVA action detection we achieve a new state-of-the-art of 28.3 mAP. Code will be made publicly available.
