As electronics manufacturers continue to face pressure to increase production efficiency amid difficulties with supply chains and labour shortages, many printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) manufacturers have begun to invest in automation and technological innovations to remain competitive. One such method is to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to greatly augment existing manufacturing processes. In this paper, we present the DarwinAI Visual Quality Inspection (DVQI) system, a hardware-integration artificial intelligence system for the automated inspection of printed circuit board assembly defects in an electronics manufacturing environment. The DVQI system enables multi-task inspection via minimal programming and setup for manufacturing engineers while improving cycle time relative to manual inspection. We also present a case study of the deployed DVQI system's performance and impact for a top electronics manufacturer.

Siamese encoders such as sentence transformers are among the least understood deep models. Established attribution methods cannot tackle this model class since it compares two inputs rather than processing a single one. To address this gap, we have recently proposed an attribution method specifically for Siamese encoders (M\"oller et al., 2023). However, it requires models to be adjusted and fine-tuned and therefore cannot be directly applied to off-the-shelf models. In this work, we reassess these restrictions and propose (i) a model with exact attribution ability that retains the original model's predictive performance and (ii) a way to compute approximate attributions for off-the-shelf models. We extensively compare approximate and exact attributions and use them to analyze the models' attendance to different linguistic aspects. We gain insights into which syntactic roles Siamese transformers attend to, confirm that they mostly ignore negation, explore how they judge semantically opposite adjectives, and find that they exhibit lexical bias.

The efficacy of self-supervised speech models has been validated, yet the optimal utilization of their representations remains challenging across diverse tasks. In this study, we delve into Acoustic Word Embeddings (AWEs), a fixed-length feature derived from continuous representations, to explore their advantages in specific tasks. AWEs have previously shown utility in capturing acoustic discriminability. In light of this, we propose measuring layer-wise similarity between AWEs and word embeddings, aiming to further investigate the inherent context within AWEs. Moreover, we evaluate the contribution of AWEs, in comparison to other types of speech features, in the context of Speech Emotion Recognition (SER). Through a comparative experiment and a layer-wise accuracy analysis on two distinct corpora, IEMOCAP and ESD, we explore differences between AWEs and raw self-supervised representations, as well as the proper utilization of AWEs alone and in combination with word embeddings. Our findings underscore the acoustic context conveyed by AWEs and showcase the highly competitive SER accuracies by appropriately employing AWEs.

Recent text-to-image diffusion models have shown surprising performance in generating high-quality images. However, concerns have arisen regarding the unauthorized data usage during the training or fine-tuning process. One example is when a model trainer collects a set of images created by a particular artist and attempts to train a model capable of generating similar images without obtaining permission and giving credit to the artist. To address this issue, we propose a method for detecting such unauthorized data usage by planting the injected memorization into the text-to-image diffusion models trained on the protected dataset. Specifically, we modify the protected images by adding unique contents on these images using stealthy image warping functions that are nearly imperceptible to humans but can be captured and memorized by diffusion models. By analyzing whether the model has memorized the injected content (i.e., whether the generated images are processed by the injected post-processing function), we can detect models that had illegally utilized the unauthorized data. Experiments on Stable Diffusion and VQ Diffusion with different model training or fine-tuning methods (i.e, LoRA, DreamBooth, and standard training) demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method in detecting unauthorized data usages. In the realm of automatic speech recognition (ASR), the quest for models that not only perform with high accuracy but also offer transparency in their decision-making processes is crucial. The potential of quality estimation (QE) metrics is introduced and evaluated as a novel tool to enhance explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) in ASR systems. Through experiments and analyses, the capabilities of the NoRefER (No Reference Error Rate) metric are explored in identifying word-level errors to aid post-editors in refining ASR hypotheses. The investigation also extends to the utility of NoRefER in the corpus-building process, demonstrating its effectiveness in augmenting datasets with insightful annotations. The diagnostic aspects of NoRefER are examined, revealing its ability to provide valuable insights into model behaviors and decision patterns. This has proven beneficial for prioritizing hypotheses in post-editing workflows and fine-tuning ASR models. The findings suggest that NoRefER is not merely a tool for error detection but also a comprehensive framework for enhancing ASR systems' transparency, efficiency, and effectiveness. To ensure the reproducibility of the results, all source codes of this study are made publicly available.

Autonomous underwater vehicles often perform surveys that capture multiple views of targets in order to provide more information for human operators or automatic target recognition algorithms. In this work, we address the problem of choosing the most informative views that minimize survey time while maximizing classifier accuracy. We introduce a novel active perception framework for multi-view adaptive surveying and reacquisition using side scan sonar imagery. Our framework addresses this challenge by using a graph formulation for the adaptive survey task. We then use Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) to both classify acquired sonar views and to choose the next best view based on the collected data. We evaluate our method using simulated surveys in a high-fidelity side scan sonar simulator. Our results demonstrate that our approach is able to surpass the state-of-the-art in classification accuracy and survey efficiency. This framework is a promising approach for more efficient autonomous missions involving side scan sonar, such as underwater exploration, marine archaeology, and environmental monitoring.

Existing learned video compression models employ flow net or deformable convolutional networks (DCN) to estimate motion information. However, the limited receptive fields of flow net and DCN inherently direct their attentiveness towards the local contexts. Global contexts, such as large-scale motions and global correlations among frames are ignored, presenting a significant bottleneck for capturing accurate motions. To address this issue, we propose a joint local and global motion compensation module (LGMC) for leaned video coding. More specifically, we adopt flow net for local motion compensation. To capture global context, we employ the cross attention in feature domain for motion compensation. In addition, to avoid the quadratic complexity of vanilla cross attention, we divide the softmax operations in attention into two independent softmax operations, leading to linear complexity. To validate the effectiveness of our proposed LGMC, we integrate it with DCVC-TCM and obtain learned video compression with joint local and global motion compensation (LVC-LGMC). Extensive experiments demonstrate that our LVC-LGMC has significant rate-distortion performance improvements over baseline DCVC-TCM.

Recent advancements in deep reinforcement learning (DRL) techniques have sparked its multifaceted applications in the automation sector. Managing complex decision-making problems with DRL encourages its use in the nuclear industry for tasks such as optimizing radiation exposure to the personnel during normal operating conditions and potential accidental scenarios. However, the lack of efficient reward function and effective exploration strategy thwarted its implementation in the development of radiation-aware autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for achieving maximum radiation protection. Here, in this article, we address these intriguing issues and introduce a deep Q-learning based architecture (RadDQN) that operates on a radiation-aware reward function to provide time-efficient minimum radiation-exposure pathway in a radiation zone. We propose a set of unique exploration strategies that fine-tune the extent of exploration and exploitation based on the state-wise variation in radiation exposure during training. Further, we benchmark the predicted path with grid-based deterministic method. We demonstrate that the formulated reward function in conjugation with adequate exploration strategy is effective in handling several scenarios with drastically different radiation field distributions. When compared to vanilla DQN, our model achieves a superior convergence rate and higher training stability.

To obtain high-quality Positron emission tomography (PET) images while minimizing radiation exposure, numerous methods have been proposed to reconstruct standard-dose PET (SPET) images from the corresponding low-dose PET (LPET) images. However, these methods heavily rely on voxel-based representations, which fall short of adequately accounting for the precise structure and fine-grained context, leading to compromised reconstruction. In this paper, we propose a 3D point-based context clusters GAN, namely PCC-GAN, to reconstruct high-quality SPET images from LPET. Specifically, inspired by the geometric representation power of points, we resort to a point-based representation to enhance the explicit expression of the image structure, thus facilitating the reconstruction with finer details. Moreover, a context clustering strategy is applied to explore the contextual relationships among points, which mitigates the ambiguities of small structures in the reconstructed images. Experiments on both clinical and phantom datasets demonstrate that our PCC-GAN outperforms the state-of-the-art reconstruction methods qualitatively and quantitatively. Diffusion models have emerged as a prominent class of generative models, surpassing previous methods regarding sample quality and training stability. Recent works have shown the advantages of diffusion models in improving reinforcement learning (RL) solutions, including as trajectory planners, expressive policy classes, data synthesizers, etc. This survey aims to provide an overview of the advancements in this emerging field and hopes to inspire new avenues of research. First, we examine several challenges encountered by current RL algorithms. Then, we present a taxonomy of existing methods based on the roles played by diffusion models in RL and explore how the existing challenges are addressed. We further outline successful applications of diffusion models in various RL-related tasks while discussing the limitations of current approaches. Finally, we conclude the survey and offer insights into future research directions, focusing on enhancing model performance and applying diffusion models to broader tasks. Recommender systems play a crucial role in mitigating the problem of information overload by suggesting users' personalized items or services. The vast majority of traditional recommender systems consider the recommendation procedure as a static process and make recommendations following a fixed strategy. In this paper, we propose a novel recommender system with the capability of continuously improving its strategies during the interactions with users. We model the sequential interactions between users and a recommender system as a Markov Decision Process (MDP) and leverage Reinforcement Learning (RL) to automatically learn the optimal strategies via recommending trial-and-error items and receiving reinforcements of these items from users' feedbacks. In particular, we introduce an online user-agent interacting environment simulator, which can pre-train and evaluate model parameters offline before applying the model online. Moreover, we validate the importance of list-wise recommendations during the interactions between users and agent, and develop a novel approach to incorporate them into the proposed framework LIRD for list-wide recommendations. The experimental results based on a real-world e-commerce dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework.
