In geographic data videos, camera movements are frequently used and combined to present information from multiple perspectives. However, creating and editing camera movements requires significant time and professional skills. This work aims to lower the barrier of crafting diverse camera movements for geographic data videos. First, we analyze a corpus of 66 geographic data videos and derive a design space of camera movements with a dimension for geospatial targets and one for narrative purposes. Based on the design space, we propose a set of adaptive camera shots and further develop an interactive tool called GeoCamera. This interactive tool allows users to flexibly design camera movements for geographic visualizations. We verify the expressiveness of our tool through case studies and evaluate its usability with a user study. The participants find that the tool facilitates the design of camera movements.

Highly effective, task-specific prompts are often heavily engineered by experts to integrate detailed instructions and domain insights based on a deep understanding of both instincts of large language models (LLMs) and the intricacies of the target task. However, automating the generation of such expert-level prompts remains elusive. Existing prompt optimization methods tend to overlook the depth of domain knowledge and struggle to efficiently explore the vast space of expert-level prompts. Addressing this, we present PromptAgent, an optimization method that autonomously crafts prompts equivalent in quality to those handcrafted by experts. At its core, PromptAgent views prompt optimization as a strategic planning problem and employs a principled planning algorithm, rooted in Monte Carlo tree search, to strategically navigate the expert-level prompt space. Inspired by human-like trial-and-error exploration, PromptAgent induces precise expert-level insights and in-depth instructions by reflecting on model errors and generating constructive error feedback. Such a novel framework allows the agent to iteratively examine intermediate prompts (states), refine them based on error feedbacks (actions), simulate future rewards, and search for high-reward paths leading to expert prompts. We apply PromptAgent to 12 tasks spanning three practical domains: BIG-Bench Hard (BBH), as well as domain-specific and general NLP tasks, showing it significantly outperforms strong Chain-of-Thought and recent prompt optimization baselines. Extensive analyses emphasize its capability to craft expert-level, detailed, and domain-insightful prompts with great efficiency and generalizability.

Graph neural networks are widely used tools for graph prediction tasks. Motivated by their empirical performance, prior works have developed generalization bounds for graph neural networks, which scale with graph structures in terms of the maximum degree. In this paper, we present generalization bounds that instead scale with the largest singular value of the graph neural network's feature diffusion matrix. These bounds are numerically much smaller than prior bounds for real-world graphs. We also construct a lower bound of the generalization gap that matches our upper bound asymptotically. To achieve these results, we analyze a unified model that includes prior works' settings (i.e., convolutional and message-passing networks) and new settings (i.e., graph isomorphism networks). Our key idea is to measure the stability of graph neural networks against noise perturbations using Hessians. Empirically, we find that Hessian-based measurements correlate with the observed generalization gaps of graph neural networks accurately. Optimizing noise stability properties for fine-tuning pretrained graph neural networks also improves test performance on several graph-level classification tasks.

Semi-supervised video object segmentation (Semi-VOS), which requires only annotating the first frame of a video to segment future frames, has received increased attention recently. Among existing pipelines, the memory-matching-based one is becoming the main research stream, as it can fully utilize the temporal sequence information to obtain high-quality segmentation results. Even though this type of method has achieved promising performance, the overall framework still suffers from heavy computation overhead, mainly caused by the per-frame dense convolution operations between high-resolution feature maps and each kernel filter. Therefore, we propose a sparse baseline of VOS named SpVOS in this work, which develops a novel triple sparse convolution to reduce the computation costs of the overall VOS framework. The designed triple gate, taking full consideration of both spatial and temporal redundancy between adjacent video frames, adaptively makes a triple decision to decide how to apply the sparse convolution on each pixel to control the computation overhead of each layer, while maintaining sufficient discrimination capability to distinguish similar objects and avoid error accumulation. A mixed sparse training strategy, coupled with a designed objective considering the sparsity constraint, is also developed to balance the VOS segmentation performance and computation costs. Experiments are conducted on two mainstream VOS datasets, including DAVIS and Youtube-VOS. Results show that, the proposed SpVOS achieves superior performance over other state-of-the-art sparse methods, and even maintains comparable performance, e.g., an 83.04% (79.29%) overall score on the DAVIS-2017 (Youtube-VOS) validation set, with the typical non-sparse VOS baseline (82.88% for DAVIS-2017 and 80.36% for Youtube-VOS) while saving up to 42% FLOPs, showing its application potential for resource-constrained scenarios.

The existing internet-scale image and video datasets cover a wide range of everyday objects and tasks, bringing the potential of learning policies that generalize in diverse scenarios. Prior works have explored visual pre-training with different self-supervised objectives. Still, the generalization capabilities of the learned policies and the advantages over well-tuned baselines remain unclear from prior studies. In this work, we present a focused study of the generalization capabilities of the pre-trained visual representations at the categorical level. We identify the key bottleneck in using a frozen pre-trained visual backbone for policy learning and then propose SpawnNet, a novel two-stream architecture that learns to fuse pre-trained multi-layer representations into a separate network to learn a robust policy. Through extensive simulated and real experiments, we show significantly better categorical generalization compared to prior approaches in imitation learning settings. Quantum networks serve as the means to transmit information, encoded in quantum bits or qubits, between quantum processors that are physically separated. Given the instability of qubits, the design of such networks is challenging, necessitating a careful balance between reliability and efficiency. Typically, quantum networks fall into two categories: those utilize quantum entanglements for quantum teleportation, and those directly transfer quantum message. In this paper, we present SurfaceNet, a quantum network in the second category that employs surface codes as logical qubits for preserving and transferring message. Our approach of using surface codes can fault-tolerantly correct both operational and photon loss errors within the network. We propose a novel one-way quantum communication procedure, designed to better integrate surface codes into our network architecture. We also propose an efficient routing protocol that optimizes resource utilization for our communication procedure. Simulation results demonstrate that SurfaceNet significantly enhances the overall communication fidelity.

Coded caching (CC) can substantially enhance network performance by leveraging memory as an additional communication resource. However, the use of CC is challenging in various practical applications due to dynamic user behavior. The existing solutions, based on shared caching, cannot directly handle all scenarios where users freely enter and depart the network at any time as they are constrained by specific conditions on network parameters. This paper proposes a universally applicable shared-caching scheme for dynamic setups without any restriction on network parameters. The closed-form expressions for the achievable degrees of freedom (DoF) are computed for the resulting generalized scheme, and are shown to achieve the existing optimal bounds of the shared-cache model. Furthermore, a successive-interference-cancellation-free extension based on a fast iterative optimized beamformer design is devised to optimize the use of excess spatial dimensions freed by cache-aided interference cancellation. Extensive numerical experiments are carried out to assess the performance of the proposed scheme. In particular, the results demonstrate that while a dynamic setup may achieve a DoF substantially lower than the optimal DoF of shared caching, our proposed scheme significantly improves the performance at the finite signal-to-noise ratio compared to unicasting, which only benefits from the local caching gain.

Denoising diffusion models represent a recent emerging topic in computer vision, demonstrating remarkable results in the area of generative modeling. A diffusion model is a deep generative model that is based on two stages, a forward diffusion stage and a reverse diffusion stage. In the forward diffusion stage, the input data is gradually perturbed over several steps by adding Gaussian noise. In the reverse stage, a model is tasked at recovering the original input data by learning to gradually reverse the diffusion process, step by step. Diffusion models are widely appreciated for the quality and diversity of the generated samples, despite their known computational burdens, i.e. low speeds due to the high number of steps involved during sampling. In this survey, we provide a comprehensive review of articles on denoising diffusion models applied in vision, comprising both theoretical and practical contributions in the field. First, we identify and present three generic diffusion modeling frameworks, which are based on denoising diffusion probabilistic models, noise conditioned score networks, and stochastic differential equations. We further discuss the relations between diffusion models and other deep generative models, including variational auto-encoders, generative adversarial networks, energy-based models, autoregressive models and normalizing flows. Then, we introduce a multi-perspective categorization of diffusion models applied in computer vision. Finally, we illustrate the current limitations of diffusion models and envision some interesting directions for future research.

Visual dialogue is a challenging task that needs to extract implicit information from both visual (image) and textual (dialogue history) contexts. Classical approaches pay more attention to the integration of the current question, vision knowledge and text knowledge, despising the heterogeneous semantic gaps between the cross-modal information. In the meantime, the concatenation operation has become de-facto standard to the cross-modal information fusion, which has a limited ability in information retrieval. In this paper, we propose a novel Knowledge-Bridge Graph Network (KBGN) model by using graph to bridge the cross-modal semantic relations between vision and text knowledge in fine granularity, as well as retrieving required knowledge via an adaptive information selection mode. Moreover, the reasoning clues for visual dialogue can be clearly drawn from intra-modal entities and inter-modal bridges. Experimental results on VisDial v1.0 and VisDial-Q datasets demonstrate that our model outperforms exiting models with state-of-the-art results.

In order to answer natural language questions over knowledge graphs, most processing pipelines involve entity and relation linking. Traditionally, entity linking and relation linking has been performed either as dependent sequential tasks or independent parallel tasks. In this paper, we propose a framework called "EARL", which performs entity linking and relation linking as a joint single task. EARL uses a graph connection based solution to the problem. We model the linking task as an instance of the Generalised Travelling Salesman Problem (GTSP) and use GTSP approximate algorithm solutions. We later develop EARL which uses a pair-wise graph-distance based solution to the problem.The system determines the best semantic connection between all keywords of the question by referring to a knowledge graph. This is achieved by exploiting the "connection density" between entity candidates and relation candidates. The "connection density" based solution performs at par with the approximate GTSP solution.We have empirically evaluated the framework on a dataset with 5000 questions. Our system surpasses state-of-the-art scores for entity linking task by reporting an accuracy of 0.65 to 0.40 from the next best entity linker.

Learning similarity functions between image pairs with deep neural networks yields highly correlated activations of embeddings. In this work, we show how to improve the robustness of such embeddings by exploiting the independence within ensembles. To this end, we divide the last embedding layer of a deep network into an embedding ensemble and formulate training this ensemble as an online gradient boosting problem. Each learner receives a reweighted training sample from the previous learners. Further, we propose two loss functions which increase the diversity in our ensemble. These loss functions can be applied either for weight initialization or during training. Together, our contributions leverage large embedding sizes more effectively by significantly reducing correlation of the embedding and consequently increase retrieval accuracy of the embedding. Our method works with any differentiable loss function and does not introduce any additional parameters during test time. We evaluate our metric learning method on image retrieval tasks and show that it improves over state-of-the-art methods on the CUB 200-2011, Cars-196, Stanford Online Products, In-Shop Clothes Retrieval and VehicleID datasets.
