Survival analysis is a fundamental tool in medicine, modeling the time until an event of interest occurs in a population. However, in real-world applications, survival data are often incomplete, censored, distributed, and confidential, especially in healthcare settings where privacy is critical. The scarcity of data can severely limit the scalability of survival models to distributed applications that rely on large data pools. Federated learning is a promising technique that enables machine learning models to be trained on multiple datasets without compromising user privacy, making it particularly well-suited for addressing the challenges of survival data and large-scale survival applications. Despite significant developments in federated learning for classification and regression, many directions remain unexplored in the context of survival analysis. In this work, we propose an extension of the Federated Survival Forest algorithm, called FedSurF++. This federated ensemble method constructs random survival forests in heterogeneous federations. Specifically, we investigate several new tree sampling methods from client forests and compare the results with state-of-the-art survival models based on neural networks. The key advantage of FedSurF++ is its ability to achieve comparable performance to existing methods while requiring only a single communication round to complete. The extensive empirical investigation results in a significant improvement from the algorithmic and privacy preservation perspectives, making the original FedSurF algorithm more efficient, robust, and private. We also present results on two real-world datasets demonstrating the success of FedSurF++ in real-world healthcare studies. Our results underscore the potential of FedSurF++ to improve the scalability and effectiveness of survival analysis in distributed settings while preserving user privacy.

Gamification is a technological, economic, cultural, and societal development toward promoting a more game-like reality. As this emergent phenomenon has been gradually consolidated into our daily lives, especially in educational settings, many scholars and practitioners face a major challenge ahead: how to understand and mitigate the unethical impacts of gamification when researching and developing such educational technologies? Thus, this study explores ethical challenges in gamified educational applications and proposes potential solutions to address them based on an umbrella review. After analysing secondary studies, this study details and proposes recommendations on addressing some ethical challenges in gamified education, such as power dynamics and paternalism, lack of voluntarity and confidentiality, cognitive manipulation, and social comparison. Research and development decision-making processes affected by such challenges are also elaborated, and potential actions to mitigate their effects in gamification planning, conducting and communication are further introduced. Thus, this chapter provides an understanding of ethical challenges posed by the literature in gamified education and a set of guidelines for future research and development.

It's noteworthy that recent methods in video anomaly detection have revealed the application of the divide and conquer philosophy (albeit with distinct perspectives from traditional usage), yielding impressive outcomes. This paper systematically reviews these literatures from six dimensions, aiming to enhance the use of the divide and conquer strategy in video anomaly detection. Furthermore, based on the insights gained from this review, a novel approach is presented, which integrates human skeletal frameworks with video data analysis techniques. This method achieves state-of-the-art performance on the ShanghaiTech dataset, surpassing all existing advanced methods.

The retrieval phase is a vital component in recommendation systems, requiring the model to be effective and efficient. Recently, generative retrieval has become an emerging paradigm for document retrieval, showing notable performance. These methods enjoy merits like being end-to-end differentiable, suggesting their viability in recommendation. However, these methods fall short in efficiency and effectiveness for large-scale recommendations. To obtain efficiency and effectiveness, this paper introduces a generative retrieval framework, namely SEATER, which learns SEmAntic Tree-structured item identifiERs via contrastive learning. Specifically, we employ an encoder-decoder model to extract user interests from historical behaviors and retrieve candidates via tree-structured item identifiers. SEATER devises a balanced k-ary tree structure of item identifiers, allocating semantic space to each token individually. This strategy maintains semantic consistency within the same level, while distinct levels correlate to varying semantic granularities. This structure also maintains consistent and fast inference speed for all items. Considering the tree structure, SEATER learns identifier tokens' semantics, hierarchical relationships, and inter-token dependencies. To achieve this, we incorporate two contrastive learning tasks with the generation task to optimize both the model and identifiers. The infoNCE loss aligns the token embeddings based on their hierarchical positions. The triplet loss ranks similar identifiers in desired orders. In this way, SEATER achieves both efficiency and effectiveness. Extensive experiments on three public datasets and an industrial dataset have demonstrated that SEATER outperforms state-of-the-art models significantly.

Video analysis is a major computer vision task that has received a lot of attention in recent years. The current state-of-the-art performance for video analysis is achieved with Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) that have high computational costs and need large amounts of labeled data for training. Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) have significantly lower computational costs (thousands of times) than regular non-spiking networks when implemented on neuromorphic hardware. They have been used for video analysis with methods like 3D Convolutional Spiking Neural Networks (3D CSNNs). However, these networks have a significantly larger number of parameters compared with spiking 2D CSNN. This, not only increases the computational costs, but also makes these networks more difficult to implement with neuromorphic hardware. In this work, we use CSNNs trained in an unsupervised manner with the Spike Timing-Dependent Plasticity (STDP) rule, and we introduce, for the first time, Spiking Separated Spatial and Temporal Convolutions (S3TCs) for the sake of reducing the number of parameters required for video analysis. This unsupervised learning has the advantage of not needing large amounts of labeled data for training. Factorizing a single spatio-temporal spiking convolution into a spatial and a temporal spiking convolution decreases the number of parameters of the network. We test our network with the KTH, Weizmann, and IXMAS datasets, and we show that S3TCs successfully extract spatio-temporal information from videos, while increasing the output spiking activity, and outperforming spiking 3D convolutions.

Linear combination is a potent data fusion method in information retrieval tasks, thanks to its ability to adjust weights for diverse scenarios. However, achieving optimal weight training has traditionally required manual relevance judgments on a large percentage of documents, a labor-intensive and expensive process. In this study, we investigate the feasibility of obtaining near-optimal weights using a mere 20\%-50\% of relevant documents. Through experiments on four TREC datasets, we find that weights trained with multiple linear regression using this reduced set closely rival those obtained with TREC's official "qrels." Our findings unlock the potential for more efficient and affordable data fusion, empowering researchers and practitioners to reap its full benefits with significantly less effort.

Solving complicated AI tasks with different domains and modalities is a key step toward artificial general intelligence. While there are abundant AI models available for different domains and modalities, they cannot handle complicated AI tasks. Considering large language models (LLMs) have exhibited exceptional ability in language understanding, generation, interaction, and reasoning, we advocate that LLMs could act as a controller to manage existing AI models to solve complicated AI tasks and language could be a generic interface to empower this. Based on this philosophy, we present HuggingGPT, a framework that leverages LLMs (e.g., ChatGPT) to connect various AI models in machine learning communities (e.g., Hugging Face) to solve AI tasks. Specifically, we use ChatGPT to conduct task planning when receiving a user request, select models according to their function descriptions available in Hugging Face, execute each subtask with the selected AI model, and summarize the response according to the execution results. By leveraging the strong language capability of ChatGPT and abundant AI models in Hugging Face, HuggingGPT is able to cover numerous sophisticated AI tasks in different modalities and domains and achieve impressive results in language, vision, speech, and other challenging tasks, which paves a new way towards artificial general intelligence.

Medical image segmentation is a fundamental and critical step in many image-guided clinical approaches. Recent success of deep learning-based segmentation methods usually relies on a large amount of labeled data, which is particularly difficult and costly to obtain especially in the medical imaging domain where only experts can provide reliable and accurate annotations. Semi-supervised learning has emerged as an appealing strategy and been widely applied to medical image segmentation tasks to train deep models with limited annotations. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review of recently proposed semi-supervised learning methods for medical image segmentation and summarized both the technical novelties and empirical results. Furthermore, we analyze and discuss the limitations and several unsolved problems of existing approaches. We hope this review could inspire the research community to explore solutions for this challenge and further promote the developments in medical image segmentation field.

Visual recognition is currently one of the most important and active research areas in computer vision, pattern recognition, and even the general field of artificial intelligence. It has great fundamental importance and strong industrial needs. Deep neural networks (DNNs) have largely boosted their performances on many concrete tasks, with the help of large amounts of training data and new powerful computation resources. Though recognition accuracy is usually the first concern for new progresses, efficiency is actually rather important and sometimes critical for both academic research and industrial applications. Moreover, insightful views on the opportunities and challenges of efficiency are also highly required for the entire community. While general surveys on the efficiency issue of DNNs have been done from various perspectives, as far as we are aware, scarcely any of them focused on visual recognition systematically, and thus it is unclear which progresses are applicable to it and what else should be concerned. In this paper, we present the review of the recent advances with our suggestions on the new possible directions towards improving the efficiency of DNN-related visual recognition approaches. We investigate not only from the model but also the data point of view (which is not the case in existing surveys), and focus on three most studied data types (images, videos and points). This paper attempts to provide a systematic summary via a comprehensive survey which can serve as a valuable reference and inspire both researchers and practitioners who work on visual recognition problems.

Current deep learning research is dominated by benchmark evaluation. A method is regarded as favorable if it empirically performs well on the dedicated test set. This mentality is seamlessly reflected in the resurfacing area of continual learning, where consecutively arriving sets of benchmark data are investigated. The core challenge is framed as protecting previously acquired representations from being catastrophically forgotten due to the iterative parameter updates. However, comparison of individual methods is nevertheless treated in isolation from real world application and typically judged by monitoring accumulated test set performance. The closed world assumption remains predominant. It is assumed that during deployment a model is guaranteed to encounter data that stems from the same distribution as used for training. This poses a massive challenge as neural networks are well known to provide overconfident false predictions on unknown instances and break down in the face of corrupted data. In this work we argue that notable lessons from open set recognition, the identification of statistically deviating data outside of the observed dataset, and the adjacent field of active learning, where data is incrementally queried such that the expected performance gain is maximized, are frequently overlooked in the deep learning era. Based on these forgotten lessons, we propose a consolidated view to bridge continual learning, active learning and open set recognition in deep neural networks. Our results show that this not only benefits each individual paradigm, but highlights the natural synergies in a common framework. We empirically demonstrate improvements when alleviating catastrophic forgetting, querying data in active learning, selecting task orders, while exhibiting robust open world application where previously proposed methods fail.

Deep neural models in recent years have been successful in almost every field, including extremely complex problem statements. However, these models are huge in size, with millions (and even billions) of parameters, thus demanding more heavy computation power and failing to be deployed on edge devices. Besides, the performance boost is highly dependent on redundant labeled data. To achieve faster speeds and to handle the problems caused by the lack of data, knowledge distillation (KD) has been proposed to transfer information learned from one model to another. KD is often characterized by the so-called `Student-Teacher' (S-T) learning framework and has been broadly applied in model compression and knowledge transfer. This paper is about KD and S-T learning, which are being actively studied in recent years. First, we aim to provide explanations of what KD is and how/why it works. Then, we provide a comprehensive survey on the recent progress of KD methods together with S-T frameworks typically for vision tasks. In general, we consider some fundamental questions that have been driving this research area and thoroughly generalize the research progress and technical details. Additionally, we systematically analyze the research status of KD in vision applications. Finally, we discuss the potentials and open challenges of existing methods and prospect the future directions of KD and S-T learning.
