This study investigates the influence of varying illumination levels on architectural experiences by employing a comprehensive approach that combines self-reported assessments and neurophysiological measurements. Thirty participants were exposed to nine distinct illumination conditions in a controlled virtual reality environment. Subjective assessments, collected through questionnaires in which participants were asked to rate how pleasant, interesting, exciting, calming, complex, bright and spacious they found the space. Objective measurements of brain activity were collected by electroencephalogram (EEG). Data analysis demonstrated that illumination levels significantly influenced cognitive engagement and different architectural experience indicators. This alignment between subjective assessment and EEG data underscores the relationship between illuminance and architectural experiences. The study bridges the gap between quantitative and qualitative assessments, providing a deeper understanding of the intricate connection between lighting conditions and human responses. These findings contribute to the enhancement of environmental design based on neuroscientific insights, emphasizing the critical role of well-considered daylighting design in positively influencing occupants' cognitive and emotional states within built environments.

Existing research has demonstrated that refining large language models (LLMs) through the utilization of machine-generated instruction-following data empowers these models to exhibit impressive zero-shot capabilities for novel tasks, without requiring human-authored instructions. In this paper, we systematically investigate, preprocess, and integrate three Chinese instruction-following datasets with the aim of enhancing the Chinese conversational capabilities of Mixtral-8x7B sparse Mixture-of-Experts model. Through instruction fine-tuning on this carefully processed dataset, we successfully construct the Mixtral-8x7B sparse Mixture-of-Experts model named "Aurora." To assess the performance of Aurora, we utilize three widely recognized benchmark tests: C-Eval, MMLU, and CMMLU. Empirical studies validate the effectiveness of instruction fine-tuning applied to Mixtral-8x7B sparse Mixture-of-Experts model. This work is pioneering in the execution of instruction fine-tuning on a sparse expert-mixed model, marking a significant breakthrough in enhancing the capabilities of this model architecture. Learning representations of molecular structures using deep learning is a fundamental problem in molecular property prediction tasks. Molecules inherently exist in the real world as three-dimensional structures; furthermore, they are not static but in continuous motion in the 3D Euclidean space, forming a potential energy surface. Therefore, it is desirable to generate multiple conformations in advance and extract molecular representations using a 4D-QSAR model that incorporates multiple conformations. However, this approach is impractical for drug and material discovery tasks because of the computational cost of obtaining multiple conformations. To address this issue, we propose a pre-training method for molecular GNNs using an existing dataset of molecular conformations to generate a latent vector universal to multiple conformations from a 2D molecular graph. Our method, called Boltzmann GNN, is formulated by maximizing the conditional marginal likelihood of a conditional generative model for conformations generation. We show that our model has a better prediction performance for molecular properties than existing pre-training methods using molecular graphs and three-dimensional molecular structures.

In this paper, we reflect on the educational challenges and research opportunities in running data visualization design activities in the context of large courses. With the increasing number and sizes of data visualization course, we need to better understand approaches to scaling our teaching efforts. We draw on experiences organizing and facilitating activities primarily based on one instance of a master's course given to about 130 students. We provide a detailed account of the course with particular focus on the purpose, structure, and outcome of six two-hour design activities. Based on this, we reflect on three aspects of the course: First, how the course scale led us to thoroughly plan, evaluate, and revise communication between students, teaching assistants, and lecturers. Second, how we designed learning scaffolds through the design activities, and the reflections we received from students on this matter. Finally, we reflect on the diversity of the students that followed the course, the visualization exercises we used, the projects they worked on, and when to key in on simple boring problems and data sets. Thus, our paper contributes with discussions about balancing topical diversity, scaling courses to many students, and problem-based learning.

We study the problem of screening in decision-making processes under uncertainty, focusing on the impact of adding an additional screening stage, commonly known as a 'gatekeeper.' While our primary analysis is rooted in the context of job market hiring, the principles and findings are broadly applicable to areas such as educational admissions, healthcare patient selection, and financial loan approvals. The gatekeeper's role is to assess applicants' suitability before significant investments are made. Our study reveals that while gatekeepers are designed to streamline the selection process by filtering out less likely candidates, they can sometimes inadvertently affect the candidates' own decision-making process. We explore the conditions under which the introduction of a gatekeeper can enhance or impede the efficiency of these processes. Additionally, we consider how adjusting gatekeeping strategies might impact the accuracy of selection decisions. Our research also extends to scenarios where gatekeeping is influenced by historical biases, particularly in competitive settings like hiring. We discover that candidates confronted with a statistically biased gatekeeping process are more likely to withdraw from applying, thereby perpetuating the previously mentioned historical biases. The study suggests that measures such as affirmative action can be effective in addressing these biases. While centered on hiring, the insights and methodologies from our study have significant implications for a wide range of fields where screening and gatekeeping are integral.

In this study, we establish that deep neural networks employing ReLU and ReLU$^2$ activation functions are capable of representing Lagrange finite element functions of any order on simplicial meshes across arbitrary dimensions. We introduce a novel global formulation of the basis functions for Lagrange elements, grounded in a geometric decomposition of these elements and leveraging two essential properties of high-dimensional simplicial meshes and barycentric coordinate functions. This representation theory facilitates a natural approximation result for such deep neural networks. Our findings present the first demonstration of how deep neural networks can systematically generate general continuous piecewise polynomial functions.

This paper presents an iterative detection and decoding scheme along with an adaptive strategy to improve the selection of access points (APs) in a grant-free uplink cell-free scenario. With the requirement for the APs to have low-computational power in mind, we introduce a low-complexity scheme for local activity and data detection. At the central processing unit (CPU) level, we propose an adaptive technique based on local log-likelihood ratios (LLRs) to select the list of APs that should be considered for each device. Simulation results show that the proposed LLRs-based APs selection scheme outperforms the existing techniques in the literature in terms of bit error rate (BER) while requiring comparable fronthaul load.

This work considers the question of how convenient access to copious data impacts our ability to learn causal effects and relations. In what ways is learning causality in the era of big data different from -- or the same as -- the traditional one? To answer this question, this survey provides a comprehensive and structured review of both traditional and frontier methods in learning causality and relations along with the connections between causality and machine learning. This work points out on a case-by-case basis how big data facilitates, complicates, or motivates each approach.

The notion of uncertainty is of major importance in machine learning and constitutes a key element of machine learning methodology. In line with the statistical tradition, uncertainty has long been perceived as almost synonymous with standard probability and probabilistic predictions. Yet, due to the steadily increasing relevance of machine learning for practical applications and related issues such as safety requirements, new problems and challenges have recently been identified by machine learning scholars, and these problems may call for new methodological developments. In particular, this includes the importance of distinguishing between (at least) two different types of uncertainty, often refereed to as aleatoric and epistemic. In this paper, we provide an introduction to the topic of uncertainty in machine learning as well as an overview of hitherto attempts at handling uncertainty in general and formalizing this distinction in particular.

The recent proliferation of knowledge graphs (KGs) coupled with incomplete or partial information, in the form of missing relations (links) between entities, has fueled a lot of research on knowledge base completion (also known as relation prediction). Several recent works suggest that convolutional neural network (CNN) based models generate richer and more expressive feature embeddings and hence also perform well on relation prediction. However, we observe that these KG embeddings treat triples independently and thus fail to cover the complex and hidden information that is inherently implicit in the local neighborhood surrounding a triple. To this effect, our paper proposes a novel attention based feature embedding that captures both entity and relation features in any given entity's neighborhood. Additionally, we also encapsulate relation clusters and multihop relations in our model. Our empirical study offers insights into the efficacy of our attention based model and we show marked performance gains in comparison to state of the art methods on all datasets.

We introduce a multi-task setup of identifying and classifying entities, relations, and coreference clusters in scientific articles. We create SciERC, a dataset that includes annotations for all three tasks and develop a unified framework called Scientific Information Extractor (SciIE) for with shared span representations. The multi-task setup reduces cascading errors between tasks and leverages cross-sentence relations through coreference links. Experiments show that our multi-task model outperforms previous models in scientific information extraction without using any domain-specific features. We further show that the framework supports construction of a scientific knowledge graph, which we use to analyze information in scientific literature.
