Fully supervised salient object detection (SOD) methods have made considerable progress in performance, yet these models rely heavily on expensive pixel-wise labels. Recently, to achieve a trade-off between labeling burden and performance, scribble-based SOD methods have attracted increasing attention. Previous scribble-based models directly implement the SOD task only based on SOD training data with limited information, it is extremely difficult for them to understand the image and further achieve a superior SOD task. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective framework guided by general visual representations with rich contextual semantic knowledge for scribble-based SOD. These general visual representations are generated by self-supervised learning based on large-scale unlabeled datasets. Our framework consists of a task-related encoder, a general visual module, and an information integration module to efficiently combine the general visual representations with task-related features to perform the SOD task based on understanding the contextual connections of images. Meanwhile, we propose a novel global semantic affinity loss to guide the model to perceive the global structure of the salient objects. Experimental results on five public benchmark datasets demonstrate that our method, which only utilizes scribble annotations without introducing any extra label, outperforms the state-of-the-art weakly supervised SOD methods. Specifically, it outperforms the previous best scribble-based method on all datasets with an average gain of 5.5% for max f-measure, 5.8% for mean f-measure, 24% for MAE, and 3.1% for E-measure. Moreover, our method achieves comparable or even superior performance to the state-of-the-art fully supervised models.

Multispectral pedestrian detection achieves better visibility in challenging conditions and thus has a broad application in various tasks, for which both the accuracy and computational cost are of paramount importance. Most existing approaches treat RGB and infrared modalities equally, typically adopting two symmetrical CNN backbones for multimodal feature extraction, which ignores the substantial differences between modalities and brings great difficulty for the reduction of the computational cost as well as effective crossmodal fusion. In this work, we propose a novel and efficient framework named WCCNet that is able to differentially extract rich features of different spectra with lower computational complexity and semantically rearranges these features for effective crossmodal fusion. Specifically, the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) allowing fast inference and training speed is embedded to construct a dual-stream backbone for efficient feature extraction. The DWT layers of WCCNet extract frequency components for infrared modality, while the CNN layers extract spatial-domain features for RGB modality. This methodology not only significantly reduces the computational complexity, but also improves the extraction of infrared features to facilitate the subsequent crossmodal fusion. Based on the well extracted features, we elaborately design the crossmodal rearranging fusion module (CMRF), which can mitigate spatial misalignment and merge semantically complementary features of spatially-related local regions to amplify the crossmodal complementary information. We conduct comprehensive evaluations on KAIST and FLIR benchmarks, in which WCCNet outperforms state-of-the-art methods with considerable computational efficiency and competitive accuracy. We also perform the ablation study and analyze thoroughly the impact of different components on the performance of WCCNet.

Recent diffusion probabilistic models (DPMs) have shown remarkable abilities of generated content, however, they often suffer from complex forward processes, resulting in inefficient solutions for the reversed process and prolonged sampling times. In this paper, we aim to address the aforementioned challenges by focusing on the diffusion process itself that we propose to decouple the intricate diffusion process into two comparatively simpler process to improve the generative efficacy and speed. In particular, we present a novel diffusion paradigm named DDM (Decoupled Diffusion Models) based on the Ito diffusion process, in which the image distribution is approximated by an explicit transition probability while the noise path is controlled by the standard Wiener process. We find that decoupling the diffusion process reduces the learning difficulty and the explicit transition probability improves the generative speed significantly. We prove a new training objective for DPM, which enables the model to learn to predict the noise and image components separately. Moreover, given the novel forward diffusion equation, we derive the reverse denoising formula of DDM that naturally supports fewer steps of generation without ordinary differential equation (ODE) based accelerators. Our experiments demonstrate that DDM outperforms previous DPMs by a large margin in fewer function evaluations setting and gets comparable performances in long function evaluations setting. We also show that our framework can be applied to image-conditioned generation and high-resolution image synthesis, and that it can generate high-quality images with only 10 function evaluations.

Performing automatic reformulations of a user's query is a popular paradigm used in information retrieval (IR) for improving effectiveness -- as exemplified by the pseudo-relevance feedback approaches, which expand the query in order to alleviate the vocabulary mismatch problem. Recent advancements in generative language models have demonstrated their ability in generating responses that are relevant to a given prompt. In light of this success, we seek to study the capacity of such models to perform query reformulation and how they compare with long-standing query reformulation methods that use pseudo-relevance feedback. In particular, we investigate two representative query reformulation frameworks, GenQR and GenPRF. GenQR directly reformulates the user's input query, while GenPRF provides additional context for the query by making use of pseudo-relevance feedback information. For each reformulation method, we leverage different techniques, including fine-tuning and direct prompting, to harness the knowledge of language models. The reformulated queries produced by the generative models are demonstrated to markedly benefit the effectiveness of a state-of-the-art retrieval pipeline on four TREC test collections (varying from TREC 2004 Robust to the TREC 2019 Deep Learning). Furthermore, our results indicate that our studied generative models can outperform various statistical query expansion approaches while remaining comparable to other existing complex neural query reformulation models, with the added benefit of being simpler to implement.

Existing methods for reconstructing interactive scenes primarily focus on replacing reconstructed objects with CAD models retrieved from a limited database, resulting in significant discrepancies between the reconstructed and observed scenes. To address this issue, our work introduces a part-level reconstruction approach that reassembles objects using primitive shapes. This enables us to precisely replicate the observed physical scenes and simulate robot interactions with both rigid and articulated objects. By segmenting reconstructed objects into semantic parts and aligning primitive shapes to these parts, we assemble them as CAD models while estimating kinematic relations, including parent-child contact relations, joint types, and parameters. Specifically, we derive the optimal primitive alignment by solving a series of optimization problems, and estimate kinematic relations based on part semantics and geometry. Our experiments demonstrate that part-level scene reconstruction outperforms object-level reconstruction by accurately capturing finer details and improving precision. These reconstructed part-level interactive scenes provide valuable kinematic information for various robotic applications; we showcase the feasibility of certifying mobile manipulation planning in these interactive scenes before executing tasks in the physical world.

Retriever-augmented instruction-following models are attractive alternatives to fine-tuned approaches for information-seeking tasks such as question answering (QA). By simply prepending retrieved documents in its input along with an instruction, these models can be adapted to various information domains and tasks without additional fine-tuning. While the model responses tend to be natural and fluent, the additional verbosity makes traditional QA evaluation metrics such as exact match (EM) and F1 unreliable for accurately quantifying model performance. In this work, we investigate the performance of instruction-following models across three information-seeking QA tasks. We use both automatic and human evaluation to evaluate these models along two dimensions: 1) how well they satisfy the user's information need (correctness), and 2) whether they produce a response based on the provided knowledge (faithfulness). Guided by human evaluation and analysis, we highlight the shortcomings of traditional metrics for both correctness and faithfulness. We then propose simple token-overlap based and model-based metrics that reflect the true performance of these models. Our analysis reveals that instruction-following models are competitive, and sometimes even outperform fine-tuned models for correctness. However, these models struggle to stick to the provided knowledge and often hallucinate in their responses. We hope our work encourages a more holistic evaluation of instruction-following models for QA. Our code and data is available at //github.com/McGill-NLP/instruct-qa

Diagnostic classification models (DCMs) are psychometric models designed to classify examinees according to their proficiency or non-proficiency of specified latent characteristics. These models are well-suited for providing diagnostic and actionable feedback to support formative assessment efforts. Several DCMs have been developed and applied in different settings. This study proposes a DCM with functional form similar to the 1-parameter logistic item response theory model. Using data from a large-scale mathematics education research study, we demonstrate that the proposed DCM has measurement properties akin to the Rasch and 1-parameter logistic item response theory models, including test score sufficiency, item-free and person-free measurement, and invariant item and person ordering. We discuss the implications and limitations of these developments, as well as directions for future research.

The growth of systems complexity increases the need of automated techniques dedicated to different log analysis tasks such as Log-based Anomaly Detection (LAD). The latter has been widely addressed in the literature, mostly by means of different deep learning techniques. Nevertheless, the focus on deep learning techniques results in less attention being paid to traditional Machine Learning (ML) techniques, which may perform well in many cases, depending on the context and the used datasets. Further, the evaluation of different ML techniques is mostly based on the assessment of their detection accuracy. However, this is is not enough to decide whether or not a specific ML technique is suitable to address the LAD problem. Other aspects to consider include the training and prediction time as well as the sensitivity to hyperparameter tuning. In this paper, we present a comprehensive empirical study, in which we evaluate different supervised and semi-supervised, traditional and deep ML techniques w.r.t. four evaluation criteria: detection accuracy, time performance, sensitivity of detection accuracy as well as time performance to hyperparameter tuning. The experimental results show that supervised traditional and deep ML techniques perform very closely in terms of their detection accuracy and prediction time. Moreover, the overall evaluation of the sensitivity of the detection accuracy of the different ML techniques to hyperparameter tuning shows that supervised traditional ML techniques are less sensitive to hyperparameter tuning than deep learning techniques. Further, semi-supervised techniques yield significantly worse detection accuracy than supervised techniques.

Expressive text-to-speech systems have undergone significant advancements owing to prosody modeling, but conventional methods can still be improved. Traditional approaches have relied on the autoregressive method to predict the quantized prosody vector; however, it suffers from the issues of long-term dependency and slow inference. This study proposes a novel approach called DiffProsody in which expressive speech is synthesized using a diffusion-based latent prosody generator and prosody conditional adversarial training. Our findings confirm the effectiveness of our prosody generator in generating a prosody vector. Furthermore, our prosody conditional discriminator significantly improves the quality of the generated speech by accurately emulating prosody. We use denoising diffusion generative adversarial networks to improve the prosody generation speed. Consequently, DiffProsody is capable of generating prosody 16 times faster than the conventional diffusion model. The superior performance of our proposed method has been demonstrated via experiments.

Object detection typically assumes that training and test data are drawn from an identical distribution, which, however, does not always hold in practice. Such a distribution mismatch will lead to a significant performance drop. In this work, we aim to improve the cross-domain robustness of object detection. We tackle the domain shift on two levels: 1) the image-level shift, such as image style, illumination, etc, and 2) the instance-level shift, such as object appearance, size, etc. We build our approach based on the recent state-of-the-art Faster R-CNN model, and design two domain adaptation components, on image level and instance level, to reduce the domain discrepancy. The two domain adaptation components are based on H-divergence theory, and are implemented by learning a domain classifier in adversarial training manner. The domain classifiers on different levels are further reinforced with a consistency regularization to learn a domain-invariant region proposal network (RPN) in the Faster R-CNN model. We evaluate our newly proposed approach using multiple datasets including Cityscapes, KITTI, SIM10K, etc. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach for robust object detection in various domain shift scenarios.

While existing machine learning models have achieved great success for sentiment classification, they typically do not explicitly capture sentiment-oriented word interaction, which can lead to poor results for fine-grained analysis at the snippet level (a phrase or sentence). Factorization Machine provides a possible approach to learning element-wise interaction for recommender systems, but they are not directly applicable to our task due to the inability to model contexts and word sequences. In this work, we develop two Position-aware Factorization Machines which consider word interaction, context and position information. Such information is jointly encoded in a set of sentiment-oriented word interaction vectors. Compared to traditional word embeddings, SWI vectors explicitly capture sentiment-oriented word interaction and simplify the parameter learning. Experimental results show that while they have comparable performance with state-of-the-art methods for document-level classification, they benefit the snippet/sentence-level sentiment analysis.
