A persistence module $M$, with coefficients in a field $\mathbb{F}$, is a finite-dimensional linear representation of an equioriented quiver of type $A_n$ or, equivalently, a graded module over the ring of polynomials $\mathbb{F}[x]$. It is well-known that $M$ can be written as the direct sum of indecomposable representations or as the direct sum of cyclic submodules generated by homogeneous elements. An interval basis for $M$ is a set of homogeneous elements of $M$ such that the sum of the cyclic submodules of $M$ generated by them is direct and equal to $M$. We introduce a novel algorithm to compute an interval basis for $M$. Based on a flag of kernels of the structure maps, our algorithm is suitable for parallel or distributed computation and does not rely on a presentation of $M$. This algorithm outperforms the approach via the presentation matrix and Smith Normal Form. We specialize our parallel approach to persistent homology modules, and we close by applying the proposed algorithm to tracking harmonics via Hodge decomposition.

In this paper, we examine the relationship between the stability of the dynamical system $x^{\prime}=f(x)$ and the computability of its basins of attraction. We present a computable $C^{\infty}$ system $x^{\prime}=f(x)$ that possesses a computable and stable equilibrium point, yet whose basin of attraction is robustly non-computable in a neighborhood of $f$ in the sense that both the equilibrium point and the non-computability of its associated basin of attraction persist when $f$ is slightly perturbed. This indicates that local stability near a stable equilibrium point alone is insufficient to guarantee the computability of its basin of attraction. However, we also demonstrate that the basins of attraction associated with a structurally stable - globally stable (robust) - planar system defined on a compact set are computable. Our findings suggest that the global stability of a system and the compactness of the domain play a pivotal role in determining the computability of its basins of attraction.

This work presents a methodology to predict a near-optimal spacing function, which defines the element sizes, suitable to perform steady RANS turbulent viscous flow simulations. The strategy aims at utilising existing high fidelity simulations to compute a target spacing function and train an artificial neural network (ANN) to predict the spacing function for new simulations, either unseen operating conditions or unseen geometric configurations. Several challenges induced by the use of highly stretched elements are addressed. The final goal is to substantially reduce the time and human expertise that is nowadays required to produce suitable meshes for simulations. Numerical examples involving turbulent compressible flows in two dimensions are used to demonstrate the ability of the trained ANN to predict a suitable spacing function. The influence of the NN architecture and the size of the training dataset are discussed. Finally, the suitability of the predicted meshes to perform simulations is investigated.

We consider the problem of low-rank rectangular matrix completion in the regime where the matrix $M$ of size $n\times m$ is ``long", i.e., the aspect ratio $m/n$ diverges to infinity. Such matrices are of particular interest in the study of tensor completion, where they arise from the unfolding of a low-rank tensor. In the case where the sampling probability is $\frac{d}{\sqrt{mn}}$, we propose a new spectral algorithm for recovering the singular values and left singular vectors of the original matrix $M$ based on a variant of the standard non-backtracking operator of a suitably defined bipartite weighted random graph, which we call a \textit{non-backtracking wedge operator}. When $d$ is above a Kesten-Stigum-type sampling threshold, our algorithm recovers a correlated version of the singular value decomposition of $M$ with quantifiable error bounds. This is the first result in the regime of bounded $d$ for weak recovery and the first for weak consistency when $d\to\infty$ arbitrarily slowly without any polylog factors. As an application, for low-CP-rank orthogonal $k$-tensor completion, we efficiently achieve weak recovery with sample size $O(n^{k/2})$ and weak consistency with sample size $\omega(n^{k/2})$. A similar result is obtained for low-multilinear-rank tensor completion with $O(n^{k/2})$ many samples.

The state vector-based simulation offers a convenient approach to developing and validating quantum algorithms with noise-free results. However, limited by the absence of cache-aware implementations and unpolished circuit optimizations, the past simulators were severely constrained in performance, leading to stagnation in quantum computing. In this paper, we present an innovative quantum circuit simulation toolkit comprising gate optimization and simulation modules to address these performance challenges. For the performance, scalability, and comprehensive evaluation, we conduct a series of particular circuit benchmarks and strong scaling tests on a DGX-A100 workstation and achieve averaging 9 times speedup compared to state-of-the-art simulators, including QuEST, IBM-Aer, and NVIDIA-cuQuantum. Moreover, the critical performance metric FLOPS increases by up to a factor of 8-fold, and arithmetic intensity experiences a remarkable 96x enhancement. We believe the proposed toolkit paves the way for faster quantum circuit simulations, thereby facilitating the development of novel quantum algorithms.

Complex conjugate matrix equations (CCME) have aroused the interest of many researchers because of computations and antilinear systems. Existing research is dominated by its time-invariant solving methods, but lacks proposed theories for solving its time-variant version. Moreover, artificial neural networks are rarely studied for solving CCME. In this paper, starting with the earliest CCME, zeroing neural dynamics (ZND) is applied to solve its time-variant version. Firstly, the vectorization and Kronecker product in the complex field are defined uniformly. Secondly, Con-CZND1 model and Con-CZND2 model are proposed and theoretically prove convergence and effectiveness. Thirdly, three numerical experiments are designed to illustrate the effectiveness of the two models, compare their differences, highlight the significance of neural dynamics in the complex field, and refine the theory related to ZND.

We consider Newton's method for finding zeros of mappings from a manifold $\mathcal{X}$ into a vector bundle $\mathcal{E}$. In this setting a connection on $\mathcal{E}$ is required to render the Newton equation well defined, and a retraction on $\mathcal{X}$ is needed to compute a Newton update. We discuss local convergence in terms of suitable differentiability concepts, using a Banach space variant of a Riemannian distance. We also carry over an affine covariant damping strategy to our setting. Finally, we will discuss some applications of our approach, namely, finding fixed points of vector fields, variational problems on manifolds and finding critical points of functionals.

We propose a new parallel-in-time algorithm for solving optimal control problems constrained bypartial differential equations. Our approach, which is based on a deeper understanding of ParaExp,considers an overlapping time-domain decomposition in which we combine the solution of homogeneous problems using exponential propagation with the local solutions of inhomogeneous problems.The algorithm yields a linear system whose matrix-vector product can be fully performed in parallel.We then propose a preconditioner to speed up the convergence of GMRES in the special cases ofthe heat and wave equations. Numerical experiments are provided to illustrate the efficiency of ourpreconditioners.

The problem of computing an exact experimental design that is optimal for the least-squares estimation of the parameters of a regression model is considered. We show that this problem can be solved via mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) for a wide class of optimality criteria, including the criteria of A-, I-, G- and MV-optimality. This approach improves upon the current state-of-the-art mathematical programming formulation, which uses mixed-integer second-order cone programming. The key idea underlying the MILP formulation is McCormick relaxation, which critically depends on finite interval bounds for the elements of the covariance matrix of the least-squares estimator corresponding to an optimal exact design. We provide both analytic and algorithmic methods for constructing these bounds. We also demonstrate the unique advantages of the MILP approach, such as the possibility of incorporating multiple design constraints into the optimization problem, including constraints on the variances and covariances of the least-squares estimator.
