Event-driven multi-threaded programming is an important idiom for structuring concurrent computations. Stateless Model Checking (SMC) is an effective verification technique for multi-threaded programs, especially when coupled with Dynamic Partial Order Reduction (DPOR). Existing SMC techniques are often ineffective in handling event-driven programs, since they will typically explore all possible orderings of event processing, even when events do not conflict. We present Event-DPOR , a DPOR algorithm tailored to event-driven multi-threaded programs. It is based on Optimal-DPOR, an optimal DPOR algorithm for multi-threaded programs; we show how it can be extended for event-driven programs. We prove correctness of Event-DPOR for all programs, and optimality for a large subclass. One complication is that an operation in Event-DPOR, which checks for redundancy of new executions, is NP-hard, as we show in this paper; we address this by a sequence of inexpensive (but incomplete) tests which check for redundancy efficiently. Our implementation and experimental evaluation show that, in comparison with other tools in which handler threads are simulated using locks, Event-DPOR can be exponentially faster than other state-of-the-art DPOR algorithms on a variety of programs and manages to completely avoid unnecessary exploration of executions.
The objective of this work is the effective extraction of spatial and dynamic features for Continuous Sign Language Recognition (CSLR). To accomplish this, we utilise a two-pathway SlowFast network, where each pathway operates at distinct temporal resolutions to separately capture spatial (hand shapes, facial expressions) and dynamic (movements) information. In addition, we introduce two distinct feature fusion methods, carefully designed for the characteristics of CSLR: (1) Bi-directional Feature Fusion (BFF), which facilitates the transfer of dynamic semantics into spatial semantics and vice versa; and (2) Pathway Feature Enhancement (PFE), which enriches dynamic and spatial representations through auxiliary subnetworks, while avoiding the need for extra inference time. As a result, our model further strengthens spatial and dynamic representations in parallel. We demonstrate that the proposed framework outperforms the current state-of-the-art performance on popular CSLR datasets, including PHOENIX14, PHOENIX14-T, and CSL-Daily.
Referring Video Object Segmentation (RVOS) requires segmenting the object in video referred by a natural language query. Existing methods mainly rely on sophisticated pipelines to tackle such cross-modal task, and do not explicitly model the object-level spatial context which plays an important role in locating the referred object. Therefore, we propose an end-to-end RVOS framework completely built upon transformers, termed \textit{Fully Transformer-Equipped Architecture} (FTEA), which treats the RVOS task as a mask sequence learning problem and regards all the objects in video as candidate objects. Given a video clip with a text query, the visual-textual features are yielded by encoder, while the corresponding pixel-level and word-level features are aligned in terms of semantic similarity. To capture the object-level spatial context, we have developed the Stacked Transformer, which individually characterizes the visual appearance of each candidate object, whose feature map is decoded to the binary mask sequence in order directly. Finally, the model finds the best matching between mask sequence and text query. In addition, to diversify the generated masks for candidate objects, we impose a diversity loss on the model for capturing more accurate mask of the referred object. Empirical studies have shown the superiority of the proposed method on three benchmarks, e.g., FETA achieves 45.1% and 38.7% in terms of mAP on A2D Sentences (3782 videos) and J-HMDB Sentences (928 videos), respectively; it achieves 56.6% in terms of $\mathcal{J\&F}$ on Ref-YouTube-VOS (3975 videos and 7451 objects). Particularly, compared to the best candidate method, it has a gain of 2.1% and 3.2% in terms of P$@$0.5 on the former two, respectively, while it has a gain of 2.9% in terms of $\mathcal{J}$ on the latter one.
We present a new method for two-material Lagrangian hydrodynamics, which combines the Shifted Interface Method (SIM) with a high-order Finite Element Method. Our approach relies on an exact (or sharp) material interface representation, that is, it uses the precise location of the material interface. The interface is represented by the zero level-set of a continuous high-order finite element function that moves with the material velocity. This strategy allows to evolve curved material interfaces inside curved elements. By reformulating the original interface problem over a surrogate (approximate) interface, located in proximity of the true interface, the SIM avoids cut cells and the associated problematic issues regarding implementation, numerical stability, and matrix conditioning. Accuracy is maintained by modifying the original interface conditions using Taylor expansions. We demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithms on established numerical benchmarks in one, two and three dimensions.
Semantic segmentation is an essential technology for self-driving cars to comprehend their surroundings. Currently, real-time semantic segmentation networks commonly employ either encoder-decoder architecture or two-pathway architecture. Generally speaking, encoder-decoder models tend to be quicker,whereas two-pathway models exhibit higher accuracy. To leverage both strengths, we present the Spatial-Assistant Encoder-Decoder Network (SANet) to fuse the two architectures. In the overall architecture, we uphold the encoder-decoder design while maintaining the feature maps in the middle section of the encoder and utilizing atrous convolution branches for same-resolution feature extraction. Toward the end of the encoder, we integrate the asymmetric pooling pyramid pooling module (APPPM) to optimize the semantic extraction of the feature maps. This module incorporates asymmetric pooling layers that extract features at multiple resolutions. In the decoder, we present a hybrid attention module, SAD, that integrates horizontal and vertical attention to facilitate the combination of various branches. To ascertain the effectiveness of our approach, our SANet model achieved competitive results on the real-time CamVid and cityscape datasets. By employing a single 2080Ti GPU, SANet achieved a 78.4 % mIOU at 65.1 FPS on the Cityscape test dataset and 78.8 % mIOU at 147 FPS on the CamVid test dataset. Multi-Agent Path Finding (MAPF) in crowded environments presents a challenging problem in motion planning, aiming to find collision-free paths for all agents in the system. MAPF finds a wide range of applications in various domains, including aerial swarms, autonomous warehouse robotics, and self-driving vehicles. The current approaches for MAPF can be broadly categorized into two main categories: centralized and decentralized planning. Centralized planning suffers from the curse of dimensionality and thus does not scale well in large and complex environments. On the other hand, decentralized planning enables agents to engage in real-time path planning within a partially observable environment, demonstrating implicit coordination. However, they suffer from slow convergence and performance degradation in dense environments. In this paper, we introduce CRAMP, a crowd-aware decentralized approach to address this problem by leveraging reinforcement learning guided by a boosted curriculum-based training strategy. We test CRAMP on simulated environments and demonstrate that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art decentralized methods for MAPF on various metrics. CRAMP improves the solution quality up to 58% measured in makespan and collision count, and up to 5% in success rate in comparison to previous methods.
Data transmission between two or more digital devices in industry and government demands secure and agile technology. Digital information distribution often requires deployment of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and Data Fusion techniques which have also gained popularity in both, civilian and military environments, such as, emergence of Smart Cities and Internet of Battlefield Things (IoBT). This usually requires capturing and consolidating data from multiple sources. Because datasets do not necessarily originate from identical sensors, fused data typically results in a complex Big Data problem. Due to potentially sensitive nature of IoT datasets, Blockchain technology is used to facilitate secure sharing of IoT datasets, which allows digital information to be distributed, but not copied. However, blockchain has several limitations related to complexity, scalability, and excessive energy consumption. We propose an approach to hide information (sensor signal) by transforming it to an image or an audio signal. In one of the latest attempts to the military modernization, we investigate sensor fusion approach by investigating the challenges of enabling an intelligent identification and detection operation and demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed Deep Learning and Anomaly Detection models that can support future application for specific hand gesture alert system from wearable devices.
Few-shot Knowledge Graph (KG) completion is a focus of current research, where each task aims at querying unseen facts of a relation given its few-shot reference entity pairs. Recent attempts solve this problem by learning static representations of entities and references, ignoring their dynamic properties, i.e., entities may exhibit diverse roles within task relations, and references may make different contributions to queries. This work proposes an adaptive attentional network for few-shot KG completion by learning adaptive entity and reference representations. Specifically, entities are modeled by an adaptive neighbor encoder to discern their task-oriented roles, while references are modeled by an adaptive query-aware aggregator to differentiate their contributions. Through the attention mechanism, both entities and references can capture their fine-grained semantic meanings, and thus render more expressive representations. This will be more predictive for knowledge acquisition in the few-shot scenario. Evaluation in link prediction on two public datasets shows that our approach achieves new state-of-the-art results with different few-shot sizes.
Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have been shown to be effective models for different predictive tasks on graph-structured data. Recent work on their expressive power has focused on isomorphism tasks and countable feature spaces. We extend this theoretical framework to include continuous features - which occur regularly in real-world input domains and within the hidden layers of GNNs - and we demonstrate the requirement for multiple aggregation functions in this context. Accordingly, we propose Principal Neighbourhood Aggregation (PNA), a novel architecture combining multiple aggregators with degree-scalers (which generalize the sum aggregator). Finally, we compare the capacity of different models to capture and exploit the graph structure via a novel benchmark containing multiple tasks taken from classical graph theory, alongside existing benchmarks from real-world domains, all of which demonstrate the strength of our model. With this work, we hope to steer some of the GNN research towards new aggregation methods which we believe are essential in the search for powerful and robust models.
Manually labeling objects by tracing their boundaries is a laborious process. In Polygon-RNN++ the authors proposed Polygon-RNN that produces polygonal annotations in a recurrent manner using a CNN-RNN architecture, allowing interactive correction via humans-in-the-loop. We propose a new framework that alleviates the sequential nature of Polygon-RNN, by predicting all vertices simultaneously using a Graph Convolutional Network (GCN). Our model is trained end-to-end. It supports object annotation by either polygons or splines, facilitating labeling efficiency for both line-based and curved objects. We show that Curve-GCN outperforms all existing approaches in automatic mode, including the powerful PSP-DeepLab and is significantly more efficient in interactive mode than Polygon-RNN++. Our model runs at 29.3ms in automatic, and 2.6ms in interactive mode, making it 10x and 100x faster than Polygon-RNN++.
The potential of graph convolutional neural networks for the task of zero-shot learning has been demonstrated recently. These models are highly sample efficient as related concepts in the graph structure share statistical strength allowing generalization to new classes when faced with a lack of data. However, knowledge from distant nodes can get diluted when propagating through intermediate nodes, because current approaches to zero-shot learning use graph propagation schemes that perform Laplacian smoothing at each layer. We show that extensive smoothing does not help the task of regressing classifier weights in zero-shot learning. In order to still incorporate information from distant nodes and utilize the graph structure, we propose an Attentive Dense Graph Propagation Module (ADGPM). ADGPM allows us to exploit the hierarchical graph structure of the knowledge graph through additional connections. These connections are added based on a node's relationship to its ancestors and descendants and an attention scheme is further used to weigh their contribution depending on the distance to the node. Finally, we illustrate that finetuning of the feature representation after training the ADGPM leads to considerable improvements. Our method achieves competitive results, outperforming previous zero-shot learning approaches.
