When processing data with uncertainty, it is desirable that the output of the algorithm is stable against small perturbations in the input. Varma and Yoshida [SODA'21] recently formalized this idea and proposed the notion of average sensitivity of algorithms, which is roughly speaking, the average Hamming distance between solutions for the original input and that obtained by deleting one element from the input, where the average is taken over the deleted element. In this work, we consider average sensitivity of algorithms for problems that can be solved by dynamic programming. We first present a $(1-\delta)$-approximation algorithm for finding a maximum weight chain (MWC) in a transitive directed acyclic graph with average sensitivity $O(\delta^{-1}\log^3 n)$, where $n$ is the number of vertices in the graph. We then show algorithms with small average sensitivity for various dynamic programming problems by reducing them to the MWC problem while preserving average sensitivity, including the longest increasing subsequence problem, the interval scheduling problem, the longest common subsequence problem, the longest palindromic subsequence problem, the knapsack problem with integral weight, and the RNA folding problem. For the RNA folding problem, our reduction is highly nontrivial because a naive reduction generates an exponentially large graph, which only provides a trivial average sensitivity bound.

We study the classical expander codes, introduced by Sipser and Spielman \cite{SS96}. Given any constants $0< \alpha, \varepsilon < 1/2$, and an arbitrary bipartite graph with $N$ vertices on the left, $M < N$ vertices on the right, and left degree $D$ such that any left subset $S$ of size at most $\alpha N$ has at least $(1-\varepsilon)|S|D$ neighbors, we show that the corresponding linear code given by parity checks on the right has distance at least roughly $\frac{\alpha N}{2 \varepsilon }$. This is strictly better than the best known previous result of $2(1-\varepsilon ) \alpha N$ \cite{Sudan2000note, Viderman13b} whenever $\varepsilon < 1/2$, and improves the previous result significantly when $\varepsilon $ is small. Furthermore, we show that this distance is tight in general, thus providing a complete characterization of the distance of general expander codes. Next, we provide several efficient decoding algorithms, which vastly improve previous results in terms of the fraction of errors corrected, whenever $\varepsilon < \frac{1}{4}$. Finally, we also give a bound on the list-decoding radius of general expander codes, which beats the classical Johnson bound in certain situations (e.g., when the graph is almost regular and the code has a high rate). Our techniques exploit novel combinatorial properties of bipartite expander graphs. In particular, we establish a new size-expansion tradeoff, which may be of independent interests.

Under an additional assumption that is satisfied by some popular graphon models, we break this "barrier" at $\sqrt{n}$ and obtain the vastly better rate $O^{*}(n^{\epsilon})$ for any $\epsilon > 0$. These improved seriation bounds can be combined with previous work to give more efficient and accurate algorithms for related tasks, including: estimating diagonally increasing graphons, and testing whether a graphon is diagonally increasing.

The intersection graph induced by a set $\Disks$ of $n$ disks can be dense. It is thus natural to try and sparsify it, while preserving connectivity. Unfortunately, sparse graphs can always be made disconnected by removing a small number of vertices. In this work, we present a sparsification algorithm that maintains connectivity between two disks in the computed graph, if the original graph remains ``well-connected'' even after removing an arbitrary ``attack'' set $\BSet \subseteq \Disks$ from both graphs. Thus, the new sparse graph has similar reliability to the original disk graph, and can withstand catastrophic failure of nodes while still providing a connectivity guarantee for the remaining graph. The new graphs has near linear complexity, and can be constructed in near linear time. The algorithm extends to any collection of shapes in the plane, such that their union complexity is near linear.

Object-oriented programming (OOP) is one of the most popular paradigms used for building software systems. We study the problem of efficiently and fairly allocating a set of indivisible goods among agents with identical and additive valuations for the goods. The objective is to maximize the Nash social welfare, which is the geometric mean of the agents' valuations. While maximizing the Nash social welfare is NP-hard, a PTAS for this problem is presented by Nguyen and Rothe. The main contribution of this paper is to design a first additive PTAS for this problem, that is, we give a polynomial-time algorithm that maximizes the Nash social welfare within an additive error $\varepsilon v_{\rm max}$, where $\varepsilon$ is an arbitrary positive number and $v_{\rm max}$ is the maximum utility of a good. The approximation performance of our algorithm is better than that of a PTAS. The idea of our algorithm is simple; we apply a preprocessing and then utilize an additive PTAS for the target load balancing problem given recently by Buchem et al. However, a nontrivial amount of work is required to evaluate the additive error of the output.

In this paper we discuss a reduced basis method for linear evolution PDEs, which is based on the application of the Laplace transform. The main advantage of this approach consists in the fact that, differently from time stepping methods, like Runge-Kutta integrators, the Laplace transform allows to compute the solution directly at a given instant, which can be done by approximating the contour integral associated to the inverse Laplace transform by a suitable quadrature formula. In terms of the reduced basis methodology, this determines a significant improvement in the reduction phase - like the one based on the classical proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) - since the number of vectors to which the decomposition applies is drastically reduced as it does not contain all intermediate solutions generated along an integration grid by a time stepping method. We show the effectiveness of the method by some illustrative parabolic PDEs arising from finance and also provide some evidence that the method we propose, when applied to a simple advection equation, does not suffer the problem of slow decay of singular values which instead affects methods based on time integration of the Cauchy problem arising from space discretization.

Many image processing networks apply a single set of static convolutional kernels across the entire input image, which is sub-optimal for natural images, as they often consist of heterogeneous visual patterns. Recent works in classification, segmentation, and image restoration have demonstrated that dynamic kernels outperform static kernels at modeling local image statistics. However, these works often adopt per-pixel convolution kernels, which introduce high memory and computation costs. To achieve spatial-varying processing without significant overhead, we present Malleable Convolution (MalleConv), as an efficient variant of dynamic convolution. The weights of MalleConv are dynamically produced by an efficient predictor network capable of generating content-dependent outputs at specific spatial locations. Unlike previous works, MalleConv generates a much smaller set of spatially-varying kernels from input, which enlarges the network's receptive field and significantly reduces computational and memory costs. These kernels are then applied to a full-resolution feature map through an efficient slice-and-conv operator with minimum memory overhead. We further build an efficient denoising network using MalleConv, coined as MalleNet. It achieves high quality results without very deep architecture, e.g., reaching 8.91x faster speed compared to the best performed denoising algorithms (SwinIR), while maintaining similar performance. We also show that a single MalleConv added to a standard convolution-based backbone can contribute significantly to reducing the computational cost or boosting image quality at a similar cost. Interpretation of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) training as an optimal control problem with nonlinear dynamical systems has received considerable attention recently, yet the algorithmic development remains relatively limited. In this work, we make an attempt along this line by reformulating the training procedure from the trajectory optimization perspective. We first show that most widely-used algorithms for training DNNs can be linked to the Differential Dynamic Programming (DDP), a celebrated second-order trajectory optimization algorithm rooted in the Approximate Dynamic Programming. In this vein, we propose a new variant of DDP that can accept batch optimization for training feedforward networks, while integrating naturally with the recent progress in curvature approximation. The resulting algorithm features layer-wise feedback policies which improve convergence rate and reduce sensitivity to hyper-parameter over existing methods. We show that the algorithm is competitive against state-ofthe-art first and second order methods. Our work opens up new avenues for principled algorithmic design built upon the optimal control theory.

This paper addresses the problem of formally verifying desirable properties of neural networks, i.e., obtaining provable guarantees that neural networks satisfy specifications relating their inputs and outputs (robustness to bounded norm adversarial perturbations, for example). Most previous work on this topic was limited in its applicability by the size of the network, network architecture and the complexity of properties to be verified. In contrast, our framework applies to a general class of activation functions and specifications on neural network inputs and outputs. We formulate verification as an optimization problem (seeking to find the largest violation of the specification) and solve a Lagrangian relaxation of the optimization problem to obtain an upper bound on the worst case violation of the specification being verified. Our approach is anytime i.e. it can be stopped at any time and a valid bound on the maximum violation can be obtained. We develop specialized verification algorithms with provable tightness guarantees under special assumptions and demonstrate the practical significance of our general verification approach on a variety of verification tasks.

Dynamic programming (DP) solves a variety of structured combinatorial problems by iteratively breaking them down into smaller subproblems. In spite of their versatility, DP algorithms are usually non-differentiable, which hampers their use as a layer in neural networks trained by backpropagation. To address this issue, we propose to smooth the max operator in the dynamic programming recursion, using a strongly convex regularizer. This allows to relax both the optimal value and solution of the original combinatorial problem, and turns a broad class of DP algorithms into differentiable operators. Theoretically, we provide a new probabilistic perspective on backpropagating through these DP operators, and relate them to inference in graphical models. We derive two particular instantiations of our framework, a smoothed Viterbi algorithm for sequence prediction and a smoothed DTW algorithm for time-series alignment. We showcase these instantiations on two structured prediction tasks and on structured and sparse attention for neural machine translation.
