Although Singing Voice Synthesis (SVS) has made great strides with Text-to-Speech (TTS) techniques, multilingual singing voice modeling remains relatively unexplored. This paper presents BiSinger, a bilingual pop SVS system for English and Chinese Mandarin. Current systems require separate models per language and cannot accurately represent both Chinese and English, hindering code-switch SVS. To address this gap, we design a shared representation between Chinese and English singing voices, achieved by using the CMU dictionary with mapping rules. We fuse monolingual singing datasets with open-source singing voice conversion techniques to generate bilingual singing voices while also exploring the potential use of bilingual speech data. Experiments affirm that our language-independent representation and incorporation of related datasets enable a single model with enhanced performance in English and code-switch SVS while maintaining Chinese song performance. We introduce Retrieval-Based Speculative Decoding (REST), a novel algorithm designed to speed up language model generation. The key insight driving the development of REST is the observation that the process of text generation often includes certain common phases and patterns. Unlike previous methods that rely on a draft language model for speculative decoding, REST harnesses the power of retrieval to generate draft tokens. This method draws from the reservoir of existing knowledge, retrieving and employing relevant tokens based on the current context. Its plug-and-play nature allows for seamless integration and acceleration of any language models, all without necessitating additional training. When benchmarked on 7B and 13B language models in a single-batch setting, REST achieves a significant speedup of 1.62X to 2.36X on code or text generation. The view synchronization problem lies at the heart of many Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) State Machine Replication (SMR) protocols in the partial synchrony model, since these protocols are usually based on views. Liveness is guaranteed if honest processors spend a sufficiently long time in the same view during periods of synchrony, and if the leader of the view is honest. Ensuring that these conditions occur, known as Byzantine View Synchronization (BVS), has turned out to be the performance bottleneck of many BFT SMR protocols. A recent line of work has shown that, by using an appropriate view synchronization protocol, BFT SMR protocols can achieve $O(n^2)$ communication complexity in the worst case after GST, thereby finally matching the lower bound established by Dolev and Reischuk in 1985. However, these protocols suffer from two major issues: (1) When implemented so as to be optimistically responsive, even a single Byzantine processor may infinitely often cause $\Omega(n\Delta)$ latency between consecutive consensus decisions. (2) Even in the absence of Byzantine action, infinitely many views require honest processors to send $\Omega(n^2)$ messages. Here, we present Lumiere, an optimistically responsive BVS protocol which maintains optimal worst-case communication complexity while simultaneously addressing the two issues above: for the first time, Lumiere enables BFT consensus solutions in the partial synchrony setting that have $O(n^2)$ worst-case communication complexity, and that eventually always (i.e., except for a small constant number of "warmup" decisions) have communication complexity and latency which is linear in the number of actual faults in the execution.

Semantic-driven 3D shape generation aims to generate 3D objects conditioned on text. Previous works face problems with single-category generation, low-frequency 3D details, and requiring a large number of paired datasets for training. To tackle these challenges, we propose a multi-category conditional diffusion model. Specifically, 1) to alleviate the problem of lack of large-scale paired data, we bridge the text, 2D image and 3D shape based on the pre-trained CLIP model, and 2) to obtain the multi-category 3D shape feature, we apply the conditional flow model to generate 3D shape vector conditioned on CLIP embedding. 3) to generate multi-category 3D shape, we employ the hidden-layer diffusion model conditioned on the multi-category shape vector, which greatly reduces the training time and memory consumption.

Extended Reality (XR) technologies, including Augmented Reality (AR), have attracted significant attention over the past few years and have been utilized in several fields, including education, healthcare, and manufacturing. In this paper, we aim to explore the use of AR in the field of biomechanics and human movement through the development of ARWalker, which is an AR application that features virtual walking companions (avatars). Research participants walk in close synchrony with the virtual companions, whose gait exhibits properties found in the gait of young and healthy adults. As a result, research participants can train their gait to the gait of the avatar, thus regaining the healthy properties of their gait and reducing the risk of falls. ARWalker can especially help older adults and individuals with diseases, who exhibit pathological gait thus being more prone to falls. We implement a prototype of ARWalker and evaluate its systems performance while running on a Microsoft Hololens 2 headset.

Reliably controlling the behavior of large language models is a pressing open problem. Existing methods include supervised finetuning, reinforcement learning from human feedback, prompt engineering and guided decoding. We instead investigate activation engineering: modifying activations at inference-time to predictably alter model behavior. We bias the forward pass with a 'steering vector' implicitly specified through natural language. Past work learned these steering vectors; our Activation Addition (ActAdd) method instead computes them by taking the activation differences which result from pairs of prompts. We demonstrate ActAdd on GPT-2 on OpenWebText and ConceptNet, and replicate the effect on Llama-13B and GPT-J-6B. Our approach yields inference-time control over high-level properties of output & preserves performance on off-target topics. The method requires far less compute and implementation effort than finetuning and RLHF, allows for natural language specification by users, and its overhead scales naturally with model size.

Significant strides have been made using large vision-language models, like Stable Diffusion (SD), for a variety of downstream tasks, including image editing, image correspondence, and 3D shape generation. Inspired by these advancements, we explore leveraging these extensive vision-language models for segmenting images at any desired granularity using as few as one annotated sample by proposing SLiMe. SLiMe frames this problem as an optimization task. Specifically, given a single training image and its segmentation mask, we first extract attention maps, including our novel "weighted accumulated self-attention map" from the SD prior. Then, using the extracted attention maps, the text embeddings of Stable Diffusion are optimized such that, each of them, learn about a single segmented region from the training image. These learned embeddings then highlight the segmented region in the attention maps, which in turn can then be used to derive the segmentation map. This enables SLiMe to segment any real-world image during inference with the granularity of the segmented region in the training image, using just one example. Moreover, leveraging additional training data when available, i.e. few-shot, improves the performance of SLiMe. We carried out a knowledge-rich set of experiments examining various design factors and showed that SLiMe outperforms other existing one-shot and few-shot segmentation methods.

Large Language Models (LLMs) are becoming increasingly smart and autonomous, targeting real-world pragmatic missions beyond traditional NLP tasks. As a result, there has been an urgent need to evaluate LLMs as agents on challenging tasks in interactive environments. We present AgentBench, a multi-dimensional evolving benchmark that currently consists of 8 distinct environments to assess LLM-as-Agent's reasoning and decision-making abilities in a multi-turn open-ended generation setting. Our extensive test over 25 LLMs (including APIs and open-sourced models) shows that, while top commercial LLMs present a strong ability of acting as agents in complex environments, there is a significant disparity in performance between them and open-sourced competitors. It also serves as a component of an ongoing project with wider coverage and deeper consideration towards systematic LLM evaluation. Diffusion models (DMs) have shown great potential for high-quality image synthesis. However, when it comes to producing images with complex scenes, how to properly describe both image global structures and object details remains a challenging task. In this paper, we present Frido, a Feature Pyramid Diffusion model performing a multi-scale coarse-to-fine denoising process for image synthesis. Our model decomposes an input image into scale-dependent vector quantized features, followed by a coarse-to-fine gating for producing image output. During the above multi-scale representation learning stage, additional input conditions like text, scene graph, or image layout can be further exploited. Thus, Frido can be also applied for conditional or cross-modality image synthesis. We conduct extensive experiments over various unconditioned and conditional image generation tasks, ranging from text-to-image synthesis, layout-to-image, scene-graph-to-image, to label-to-image. More specifically, we achieved state-of-the-art FID scores on five benchmarks, namely layout-to-image on COCO and OpenImages, scene-graph-to-image on COCO and Visual Genome, and label-to-image on COCO. We present CoDEx, a set of knowledge graph completion datasets extracted from Wikidata and Wikipedia that improve upon existing knowledge graph completion benchmarks in scope and level of difficulty. In terms of scope, CoDEx comprises three knowledge graphs varying in size and structure, multilingual descriptions of entities and relations, and tens of thousands of hard negative triples that are plausible but verified to be false. To characterize CoDEx, we contribute thorough empirical analyses and benchmarking experiments. First, we analyze each CoDEx dataset in terms of logical relation patterns. Next, we report baseline link prediction and triple classification results on CoDEx for five extensively tuned embedding models. Finally, we differentiate CoDEx from the popular FB15K-237 knowledge graph completion dataset by showing that CoDEx covers more diverse and interpretable content, and is a more difficult link prediction benchmark. We present CURL: Contrastive Unsupervised Representations for Reinforcement Learning. CURL extracts high-level features from raw pixels using contrastive learning and performs off-policy control on top of the extracted features. CURL outperforms prior pixel-based methods, both model-based and model-free, on complex tasks in the DeepMind Control Suite and Atari Games showing 1.9x and 1.6x performance gains at the 100K environment and interaction steps benchmarks respectively. On the DeepMind Control Suite, CURL is the first image-based algorithm to nearly match the sample-efficiency and performance of methods that use state-based features.
