A multivariate cryptograpic instance in practice is a multivariate polynomial system. So the security of a protocol rely on the complexity of solving a multivariate polynomial system. In this paper there is an overview on a general algorithm used to solve a multivariate system and the quantity to which the complexity of this algorithm depends on: the solving degree. Unfortunately, it is hard to compute. For this reason, it is introduced an invariant: the degree of regularity. This invariant, under certain condition, give us an upper bound on the solving degree. Then we speak about random polynomial systems and in particular what "random" means to us. Finally, we give an upper bound on both the degree of regularity and the solving degree of such random systems.
The prevailing statistical approach to analyzing persistence diagrams is concerned with filtering out topological noise. In this paper, we adopt a different viewpoint and aim at estimating the actual distribution of a random persistence diagram, which captures both topological signal and noise. To that effect, Chazel and Divol (2019) proved that, under general conditions, the expected value of a random persistence diagram is a measure admitting a Lebesgue density, called the persistence intensity function. In this paper, we are concerned with estimating the persistence intensity function and a novel, normalized version of it -- called the persistence density function. We present a class of kernel-based estimators based on an i.i.d. sample of persistence diagrams and derive estimation rates in the supremum norm. As a direct corollary, we obtain uniform consistency rates for estimating linear representations of persistence diagrams, including Betti numbers and persistence surfaces. Interestingly, the persistence density function delivers stronger statistical guarantees.
Estimating the structure of directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) from observational data remains a significant challenge in machine learning. Most research in this area concentrates on learning a single DAG for the entire population. This paper considers an alternative setting where the graph structure varies across individuals based on available "contextual" features. We tackle this contextual DAG problem via a neural network that maps the contextual features to a DAG, represented as a weighted adjacency matrix. The neural network is equipped with a novel projection layer that ensures the output matrices are sparse and satisfy a recently developed characterization of acyclicity. We devise a scalable computational framework for learning contextual DAGs and provide a convergence guarantee and an analytical gradient for backpropagating through the projection layer. Our experiments suggest that the new approach can recover the true context-specific graph where existing approaches fail.
We propose a method for computing the Lyapunov exponents of renewal equations (delay equations of Volterra type) and of coupled systems of renewal and delay differential equations. The method consists in the reformulation of the delay equation as an abstract differential equation, the reduction of the latter to a system of ordinary differential equations via pseudospectral collocation, and the application of the standard discrete QR method. The effectiveness of the method is shown experimentally and a MATLAB implementation is provided.
Bidirectional typing is a discipline in which the typing judgment is decomposed explicitly into inference and checking modes, allowing to control the flow of type information in typing rules and to specify algorithmically how they should be used. Bidirectional typing has been fruitfully studied and bidirectional systems have been developed for many type theories. However, the formal development of bidirectional typing has until now been kept confined to specific theories, with general guidelines remaining informal. In this work, we give a generic account of bidirectional typing for a general class of dependent type theories. This is done by first giving a general definition of type theories (or equivalently, a logical framework), for which we define declarative and bidirectional type systems. We then show, in a theory-independent fashion, that the two systems are equivalent. This equivalence is then explored to establish the decidability of typing for weak normalizing theories, yielding a generic type-checking algorithm that has been implemented in a prototype and used in practice with many theories.
We develop a provably efficient importance sampling scheme that estimates exit probabilities of solutions to small-noise stochastic reaction-diffusion equations from scaled neighborhoods of a stable equilibrium. The moderate deviation scaling allows for a local approximation of the nonlinear dynamics by their linearized version. In addition, we identify a finite-dimensional subspace where exits take place with high probability. Using stochastic control and variational methods we show that our scheme performs well both in the zero noise limit and pre-asymptotically. Simulation studies for stochastically perturbed bistable dynamics illustrate the theoretical results.
If the Stokes equations are properly discretized, it is known that the Schur complement matrix is spectrally equivalent to the identity matrix. Moreover, in the case of simple geometries, it is often observed that most of its eigenvalues are equal to one. These facts form the basis for the famous Uzawa algorithm. Despite recent progress in developing efficient iterative methods for solving the Stokes problem, the Uzawa algorithm remains popular in science and engineering, especially when accelerated by Krylov subspace methods. However, in complex geometries, the Schur complement matrix can become severely ill-conditioned, having a significant portion of non-unit eigenvalues. This makes the established Uzawa preconditioner inefficient. To explain this behaviour, we examine the Pressure Schur Complement formulation for the staggered finite-difference discretization of the Stokes equations. Firstly, we conjecture that the no-slip boundary conditions are the reason for non-unit eigenvalues of the Schur complement matrix. Secondly, we demonstrate that its condition number increases with increasing the surface-to-volume ratio of the flow domain. As an alternative to the Uzawa preconditioner, we propose using the diffusive SIMPLE preconditioner for geometries with a large surface-to-volume ratio. We show that the latter is much more fast and robust for such geometries. Furthermore, we show that the usage of the SIMPLE preconditioner leads to more accurate practical computation of the permeability of tight porous media. Symmetry is a cornerstone of much of mathematics, and many probability distributions possess symmetries characterized by their invariance to a collection of group actions. Thus, many mathematical and statistical methods rely on such symmetry holding and ostensibly fail if symmetry is broken. This work considers under what conditions a sequence of probability measures asymptotically gains such symmetry or invariance to a collection of group actions. Considering the many symmetries of the Gaussian distribution, this work effectively proposes a non-parametric type of central limit theorem. That is, a Lipschitz function of a high dimensional random vector will be asymptotically invariant to the actions of certain compact topological groups. Applications of this include a partial law of the iterated logarithm for uniformly random points in an $\ell_p^n$-ball and an asymptotic equivalence between classical parametric statistical tests and their randomization counterparts even when invariance assumptions are violated.
Spiking neural network is a kind of neuromorphic computing that is believed to improve the level of intelligence and provide advantages for quantum computing. In this work, we address this issue by designing an optical spiking neural network and find that it can be used to accelerate the speed of computation, especially on combinatorial optimization problems. Here the spiking neural network is constructed by the antisymmetrically coupled degenerate optical parametric oscillator pulses and dissipative pulses. A nonlinear transfer function is chosen to mitigate amplitude inhomogeneities and destabilize the resulting local minima according to the dynamical behavior of spiking neurons. It is numerically shown that the spiking neural network-coherent Ising machines have excellent performance on combinatorial optimization problems, which is expected to offer new applications for neural computing and optical computing.
We observe a large variety of robots in terms of their bodies, sensors, and actuators. Given the commonalities in the skill sets, teaching each skill to each different robot independently is inefficient and not scalable when the large variety in the robotic landscape is considered. If we can learn the correspondences between the sensorimotor spaces of different robots, we can expect a skill that is learned in one robot can be more directly and easily transferred to the other robots. In this paper, we propose a method to learn correspondences between robots that have significant differences in their morphologies: a fixed-based manipulator robot with joint control and a differential drive mobile robot. For this, both robots are first given demonstrations that achieve the same tasks. A common latent representation is formed while learning the corresponding policies. After this initial learning stage, the observation of a new task execution by one robot becomes sufficient to generate a latent space representation pertaining to the other robot to achieve the same task. We verified our system in a set of experiments where the correspondence between two simulated robots is learned (1) when the robots need to follow the same paths to achieve the same task, (2) when the robots need to follow different trajectories to achieve the same task, and (3) when complexities of the required sensorimotor trajectories are different for the robots considered. We also provide a proof-of-the-concept realization of correspondence learning between a real manipulator robot and a simulated mobile robot.
Models of complex technological systems inherently contain interactions and dependencies among their input variables that affect their joint influence on the output. Such models are often computationally expensive and few sensitivity analysis methods can effectively process such complexities. Moreover, the sensitivity analysis field as a whole pays limited attention to the nature of interaction effects, whose understanding can prove to be critical for the design of safe and reliable systems. In this paper, we introduce and extensively test a simple binning approach for computing sensitivity indices and demonstrate how complementing it with the smart visualization method, simulation decomposition (SimDec), can permit important insights into the behavior of complex engineering models. The simple binning approach computes first-, second-order effects, and a combined sensitivity index, and is considerably more computationally efficient than Sobol' indices. The totality of the sensitivity analysis framework provides an efficient and intuitive way to analyze the behavior of complex systems containing interactions and dependencies.
