Modern visual-inertial navigation systems (VINS) are faced with a critical challenge in real-world deployment: they need to operate reliably and robustly in highly dynamic environments. Current best solutions merely filter dynamic objects as outliers based on the semantics of the object category. Such an approach does not scale as it requires semantic classifiers to encompass all possibly-moving object classes; this is hard to define, let alone deploy. On the other hand, many real-world environments exhibit strong structural regularities in the form of planes such as walls and ground surfaces, which are also crucially static. We present RP-VIO, a monocular visual-inertial odometry system that leverages the simple geometry of these planes for improved robustness and accuracy in challenging dynamic environments. Since existing datasets have a limited number of dynamic elements, we also present a highly-dynamic, photorealistic synthetic dataset for a more effective evaluation of the capabilities of modern VINS systems. We evaluate our approach on this dataset, and three diverse sequences from standard datasets including two real-world dynamic sequences and show a significant improvement in robustness and accuracy over a state-of-the-art monocular visual-inertial odometry system. We also show in simulation an improvement over a simple dynamic-features masking approach. Our code and dataset are publicly available.

We present a novel real-time visual odometry framework for a stereo setup of a depth and high-resolution event camera. Our framework balances accuracy and robustness against computational efficiency towards strong performance in challenging scenarios. We extend conventional edge-based semi-dense visual odometry towards time-surface maps obtained from event streams. Semi-dense depth maps are generated by warping the corresponding depth values of the extrinsically calibrated depth camera. The tracking module updates the camera pose through efficient, geometric semi-dense 3D-2D edge alignment. Our approach is validated on both public and self-collected datasets captured under various conditions. We show that the proposed method performs comparable to state-of-the-art RGB-D camera-based alternatives in regular conditions, and eventually outperforms in challenging conditions such as high dynamics or low illumination.

SLAM algorithm is based on the static assumption of environment. Therefore, the dynamic factors in the environment will have a great impact on the matching points due to violating this assumption, and then directly affect the accuracy of subsequent camera pose estimation. Recently, some related works generally use the combination of semantic constraints and geometric constraints to deal with dynamic objects, but there are some problems, such as poor real-time performance, easy to treat people as rigid bodies, and poor performance in low dynamic scenes. In this paper, a dynamic scene oriented visual SLAM algorithm based on target detection and static probability named DYP-SLAM is proposed. The algorithm combines semantic constraints and geometric constraints to calculate the static probability of objects, keypoints and map points, and takes them as weights to participate in camera pose estimation. The proposed algorithm is evaluated on the public dataset and compared with a variety of advanced algorithms. It has achieved the best results in almost all low dynamics and high dynamic scenarios, and showing quite high real-time.

In the last decade, numerous supervised deep learning approaches requiring large amounts of labeled data have been proposed for visual-inertial odometry (VIO) and depth map estimation. To overcome the data limitation, self-supervised learning has emerged as a promising alternative, exploiting constraints such as geometric and photometric consistency in the scene. In this study, we introduce a novel self-supervised deep learning-based VIO and depth map recovery approach (SelfVIO) using adversarial training and self-adaptive visual-inertial sensor fusion. SelfVIO learns to jointly estimate 6 degrees-of-freedom (6-DoF) ego-motion and a depth map of the scene from unlabeled monocular RGB image sequences and inertial measurement unit (IMU) readings. The proposed approach is able to perform VIO without the need for IMU intrinsic parameters and/or the extrinsic calibration between the IMU and the camera. estimation and single-view depth recovery network. We provide comprehensive quantitative and qualitative evaluations of the proposed framework comparing its performance with state-of-the-art VIO, VO, and visual simultaneous localization and mapping (VSLAM) approaches on the KITTI, EuRoC and Cityscapes datasets. Vision-based Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (VSLAM) is a mature problem in Robotics. Most VSLAM systems are feature based methods, which are robust and present high accuracy, but yield sparse maps with limited application for further navigation tasks. Most recently, direct methods which operate directly on image intensity have been introduced, capable of reconstructing richer maps at the cost of higher processing power. In this work, an edge-based monocular SLAM system (SE-SLAM) is proposed as a middle point: edges present good localization as point features, while enabling a structural semidense map reconstruction. However, edges are not easy to associate, track and optimize over time, as they lack descriptors and biunivocal correspondence, unlike point features. To tackle these issues, this paper presents a method to match edges between frames in a consistent manner; a feasible strategy to solve the optimization problem, since its size rapidly increases when working with edges; and the use of non-linear optimization techniques. The resulting system achieves comparable precision to state of the art feature-based and dense/semi-dense systems, while inherently building a structural semi-dense reconstruction of the environment, providing relevant structure data for further navigation algorithms. To achieve such accuracy, state of the art non-linear optimization is needed, over a continuous feed of 10000 edgepoints per frame, to optimize the full semi-dense output. Despite its heavy processing requirements, the system achieves near to real-time operation, thanks to a custom built solver and parallelization of its key stages. In order to encourage further development of edge-based SLAM systems, SE-SLAM source code will be released as open source.

We present R-LINS, a lightweight robocentric lidar-inertial state estimator, which estimates robot ego-motion using a 6-axis IMU and a 3D lidar in a tightly-coupled scheme. To achieve robustness and computational efficiency even in challenging environments, an iterated error-state Kalman filter (ESKF) is designed, which recursively corrects the state via repeatedly generating new corresponding feature pairs. Moreover, a novel robocentric formulation is adopted in which we reformulate the state estimator concerning a moving local frame, rather than a fixed global frame as in the standard world-centric lidar-inertial odometry(LIO), in order to prevent filter divergence and lower computational cost. To validate generalizability and long-time practicability, extensive experiments are performed in indoor and outdoor scenarios. The results indicate that R-LINS outperforms lidar-only and loosely-coupled algorithms, and achieve competitive performance as the state-of-the-art LIO with close to an order-of-magnitude improvement in terms of speed.

3D vehicle detection and tracking from a monocular camera requires detecting and associating vehicles, and estimating their locations and extents together. It is challenging because vehicles are in constant motion and it is practically impossible to recover the 3D positions from a single image. In this paper, we propose a novel framework that jointly detects and tracks 3D vehicle bounding boxes. Our approach leverages 3D pose estimation to learn 2D patch association overtime and uses temporal information from tracking to obtain stable 3D estimation. Our method also leverages 3D box depth ordering and motion to link together the tracks of occluded objects. We train our system on realistic 3D virtual environments, collecting a new diverse, large-scale and densely annotated dataset with accurate 3D trajectory annotations. Our experiments demonstrate that our method benefits from inferring 3D for both data association and tracking robustness, leveraging our dynamic 3D tracking dataset.

We present a monocular Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) using high level object and plane landmarks, in addition to points. The resulting map is denser, more compact and meaningful compared to point only SLAM. We first propose a high order graphical model to jointly infer the 3D object and layout planes from single image considering occlusions and semantic constraints. The extracted cuboid object and layout planes are further optimized in a unified SLAM framework. Objects and planes can provide more semantic constraints such as Manhattan and object supporting relationships compared to points. Experiments on various public and collected datasets including ICL NUIM and TUM mono show that our algorithm can improve camera localization accuracy compared to state-of-the-art SLAM and also generate dense maps in many structured environments.

Higher level functionality in autonomous driving depends strongly on a precise motion estimate of the vehicle. Powerful algorithms have been developed. However, their great majority focuses on either binocular imagery or pure LIDAR measurements. The promising combination of camera and LIDAR for visual localization has mostly been unattended. In this work we fill this gap, by proposing a depth extraction algorithm from LIDAR measurements for camera feature tracks and estimating motion by robustified keyframe based Bundle Adjustment. Semantic labeling is used for outlier rejection and weighting of vegetation landmarks. The capability of this sensor combination is demonstrated on the competitive KITTI dataset, achieving a placement among the top 15. The code is released to the community.

We propose an algorithm for real-time 6DOF pose tracking of rigid 3D objects using a monocular RGB camera. The key idea is to derive a region-based cost function using temporally consistent local color histograms. While such region-based cost functions are commonly optimized using first-order gradient descent techniques, we systematically derive a Gauss-Newton optimization scheme which gives rise to drastically faster convergence and highly accurate and robust tracking performance. We furthermore propose a novel complex dataset dedicated for the task of monocular object pose tracking and make it publicly available to the community. To our knowledge, It is the first to address the common and important scenario in which both the camera as well as the objects are moving simultaneously in cluttered scenes. In numerous experiments - including our own proposed data set - we demonstrate that the proposed Gauss-Newton approach outperforms existing approaches, in particular in the presence of cluttered backgrounds, heterogeneous objects and partial occlusions.
