Robots that share an environment with humans may communicate their intent using a variety of different channels. Movement is one of these channels and, particularly in manipulation tasks, intent communication via movement is called legibility. It alters a robot's trajectory to make it intent expressive. Here we propose a novel evaluation method that improves the data efficiency of collected experimental data when benchmarking approaches generating such legible behavior. The primary novelty of the proposed method is that it uses trajectories that were generated independently of the framework being tested. This makes evaluation easier, enables N-way comparisons between approaches, and allows easier comparison across papers. We demonstrate the efficiency of the new evaluation method by comparing 10 legibility frameworks in 2 scenarios. The paper, thus, provides readers with (1) a novel approach to investigate and/or benchmark legibility, (2) an overview of existing frameworks, (3) an evaluation of 10 legibility frameworks (from 6 papers), and (4) evidence that viewing angle and trajectory progression matter when users evaluate the legibility of a motion.

Semantic place annotation can provide individual semantics, which can be of great help in the field of trajectory data mining. Most existing methods rely on annotated or external data and require retraining following a change of region, thus preventing their large-scale applications. Herein, we propose an unsupervised method denoted as UPAPP for the semantic place annotation of trajectories using spatiotemporal information. The Bayesian Criterion is specifically employed to decompose the spatiotemporal probability of the candidate place into spatial probability, duration probability, and visiting time probability. Spatial information in ROI and POI data is subsequently adopted to calculate the spatial probability. In terms of the temporal probabilities, the Term Frequency Inverse Document Frequency weighting algorithm is used to count the potential visits to different place types in the trajectories, and generates the prior probabilities of the visiting time and duration. The spatiotemporal probability of the candidate place is then combined with the importance of the place category to annotate the visited places. Validation with a trajectory dataset collected by 709 volunteers in Beijing showed that our method achieved an overall and average accuracy of 0.712 and 0.720, respectively, indicating that the visited places can be annotated accurately without any external data.

Embodied agents, trained to explore and navigate indoor photorealistic environments, have achieved impressive results on standard datasets and benchmarks. So far, experiments and evaluations have involved domestic and working scenes like offices, flats, and houses. In this paper, we build and release a new 3D space with unique characteristics: the one of a complete art museum. We name this environment ArtGallery3D (AG3D). Compared with existing 3D scenes, the collected space is ampler, richer in visual features, and provides very sparse occupancy information. This feature is challenging for occupancy-based agents which are usually trained in crowded domestic environments with plenty of occupancy information. Additionally, we annotate the coordinates of the main points of interest inside the museum, such as paintings, statues, and other items. Thanks to this manual process, we deliver a new benchmark for PointGoal navigation inside this new space. Trajectories in this dataset are far more complex and lengthy than existing ground-truth paths for navigation in Gibson and Matterport3D. We carry on extensive experimental evaluation using our new space for evaluation and prove that existing methods hardly adapt to this scenario. As such, we believe that the availability of this 3D model will foster future research and help improve existing solutions.

We present a data-efficient framework for solving sequential decision-making problems which exploits the combination of reinforcement learning (RL) and latent variable generative models. The framework, called GenRL, trains deep policies by introducing an action latent variable such that the feed-forward policy search can be divided into two parts: (i) training a sub-policy that outputs a distribution over the action latent variable given a state of the system, and (ii) unsupervised training of a generative model that outputs a sequence of motor actions conditioned on the latent action variable. GenRL enables safe exploration and alleviates the data-inefficiency problem as it exploits prior knowledge about valid sequences of motor actions. Moreover, we provide a set of measures for evaluation of generative models such that we are able to predict the performance of the RL policy training prior to the actual training on a physical robot. We experimentally determine the characteristics of generative models that have most influence on the performance of the final policy training on two robotics tasks: shooting a hockey puck and throwing a basketball. Furthermore, we empirically demonstrate that GenRL is the only method which can safely and efficiently solve the robotics tasks compared to two state-of-the-art RL methods.

Unlike conventional cars, connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) can cross intersections in a lane-free order and utilise the whole area of intersections. This paper presents a minimum-time optimal control problem to centrally control the CAVs to simultaneously cross an intersection in the shortest possible time. Dual problem theory is employed to convexify the constraints of CAVs to avoid collision with each other and with road boundaries. The developed formulation is smooth and solvable by gradient-based algorithms. Simulation results show that the proposed strategy reduces the crossing time of intersections by an average of 52% and 54% as compared to, respectively, the state-of-the-art reservation-based and lane-free methods. Furthermore, the crossing time by the proposed strategy is fixed to a constant value for an intersection regardless of the number of CAVs.

The past few years have witnessed an increasing interest in improving the perception performance of LiDARs on autonomous vehicles. While most of the existing works focus on developing new deep learning algorithms or model architectures, we study the problem from the physical design perspective, i.e., how different placements of multiple LiDARs influence the learning-based perception. To this end, we introduce an easy-to-compute information-theoretic surrogate metric to quantitatively and fast evaluate LiDAR placement for 3D detection of different types of objects. We also present a new data collection, detection model training and evaluation framework in the realistic CARLA simulator to evaluate disparate multi-LiDAR configurations. Using several prevalent placements inspired by the designs of self-driving companies, we show the correlation between our surrogate metric and object detection performance of different representative algorithms on KITTI through extensive experiments, validating the effectiveness of our LiDAR placement evaluation approach. Our results show that sensor placement is non-negligible in 3D point cloud-based object detection, which will contribute up to 10% performance discrepancy in terms of average precision in challenging 3D object detection settings. We believe that this is one of the first studies to quantitatively investigate the influence of LiDAR placement on perception performance.

This paper presents a hybrid robot motion planner that generates long-horizon motion plans for robot navigation in environments with obstacles. We propose a hybrid planner, RRT* with segmented trajectory optimization (RRT*-sOpt), which combines the merits of sampling-based planning, optimization-based planning, and trajectory splitting to quickly plan for a collision-free and dynamically-feasible motion plan. When generating a plan, the RRT* layer quickly samples a semi-optimal path and sets it as an initial reference path. Then, the sOpt layer splits the reference path and performs optimization on each segment. It then splits the new trajectory again and repeats the process until the whole trajectory converges. We also propose to reduce the number of segments before convergence with the aim of further reducing computation time. Simulation results show that RRT*-sOpt benefits from the hybrid structure with trajectory splitting and performs robustly in various robot platforms and scenarios.

Controlled text generation tasks such as unsupervised text style transfer have increasingly adopted the use of Reinforcement Learning (RL). A major challenge in applying RL to such tasks is the sparse reward, which is available only after the full text is generated. Sparse rewards, combined with a large action space make RL training sample-inefficient and difficult to converge. Recently proposed reward-shaping strategies to address this issue have shown only negligible gains. In contrast, this work proposes a novel approach that provides dense rewards to each generated token. We evaluate our approach by its usage in unsupervised text style transfer. Averaged across datasets, our style transfer system improves upon current state-of-art systems by 21\% on human evaluation and 12\% on automatic evaluation. Upon ablated comparison with the current reward shaping approach (the `roll-out strategy'), using dense rewards improves the overall style transfer quality by 22\% based on human evaluation. Further the RL training is 2.5 times as sample efficient, and 7 times faster.

The problem of active mapping aims to plan an informative sequence of sensing views given a limited budget such as distance traveled. This paper consider active occupancy grid mapping using a range sensor, such as LiDAR or depth camera. State-of-the-art methods optimize information-theoretic measures relating the occupancy grid probabilities with the range sensor measurements. The non-smooth nature of ray-tracing within a grid representation makes the objective function non-differentiable, forcing existing methods to search over a discrete space of candidate trajectories. This work proposes a differentiable approximation of the Shannon mutual information between a grid map and ray-based observations that enables gradient ascent optimization in the continuous space of SE(3) sensor poses. Our gradient-based formulation leads to more informative sensing trajectories, while avoiding occlusions and collisions. The proposed method is demonstrated in simulated and real-world experiments in 2-D and 3-D environments.

Blockchain and smart contract technology are novel approaches to data and code management that facilitate trusted computing by allowing for development in a distributed and decentralized manner. Testing smart contracts comes with its own set of challenges which have not yet been fully identified and explored. Although existing tools can identify and discover known vulnerabilities and their interactions on the Ethereum blockchain through random search or symbolic execution, these tools generally do not produce test suites suitable for human oracles. In this paper, we present AGSOLT (Automated Generator of Solidity Test Suites). We demonstrate its efficiency by implementing two search algorithms to automatically generate test suites for stand-alone Solidity smart contracts, taking into account some of the blockchain-specific challenges. To test AGSOLT, we compared a random search algorithm and a genetic algorithm on a set of 36 real-world smart contracts. We found that AGSOLT is capable of achieving high branch coverage with both approaches and even discovered some errors in some of the most popular Solidity smart contracts on Github.

Meta-reinforcement learning algorithms can enable robots to acquire new skills much more quickly, by leveraging prior experience to learn how to learn. However, much of the current research on meta-reinforcement learning focuses on task distributions that are very narrow. For example, a commonly used meta-reinforcement learning benchmark uses different running velocities for a simulated robot as different tasks. When policies are meta-trained on such narrow task distributions, they cannot possibly generalize to more quickly acquire entirely new tasks. Therefore, if the aim of these methods is to enable faster acquisition of entirely new behaviors, we must evaluate them on task distributions that are sufficiently broad to enable generalization to new behaviors. In this paper, we propose an open-source simulated benchmark for meta-reinforcement learning and multi-task learning consisting of 50 distinct robotic manipulation tasks. Our aim is to make it possible to develop algorithms that generalize to accelerate the acquisition of entirely new, held-out tasks. We evaluate 6 state-of-the-art meta-reinforcement learning and multi-task learning algorithms on these tasks. Surprisingly, while each task and its variations (e.g., with different object positions) can be learned with reasonable success, these algorithms struggle to learn with multiple tasks at the same time, even with as few as ten distinct training tasks. Our analysis and open-source environments pave the way for future research in multi-task learning and meta-learning that can enable meaningful generalization, thereby unlocking the full potential of these methods.
