How to navigate effectively in crowd environments with socially acceptable standards remains the key problem to be solved for the development of mobile robots. Recent work has shown the effectiveness of deep reinforcement learning in addressing crowd navigation, but the learning becomes progressively less effective as the speed of pedestrians increases. To improve the effectiveness of deep reinforcement learning, we redesigned the reward function by introducing the penalty term of relative speed in the reward function. The newly designed reward function is tested on three mainstream deep reinforcement learning algorithms: deep reinforcement learning collision avoidance (CADRL), deep learning based long and short-term memory (LSTM RL), and reinforcement learning based on socialist riselection (SARL). The results of the experiments show that our model navigates in a safer way, outperforming the current model in key metrics such as success rate, collision rate, and hazard frequency.

Vision-and-language Navigation (VLN) task requires an embodied agent to navigate to a remote location following a natural language instruction. Previous methods usually adopt a sequence model (e.g., Transformer and LSTM) as the navigator. In such a paradigm, the sequence model predicts action at each step through a maintained navigation state, which is generally represented as a one-dimensional vector. However, the crucial navigation clues (i.e., object-level environment layout) for embodied navigation task is discarded since the maintained vector is essentially unstructured. In this paper, we propose a novel Structured state-Evolution (SEvol) model to effectively maintain the environment layout clues for VLN. Specifically, we utilise the graph-based feature to represent the navigation state instead of the vector-based state. Accordingly, we devise a Reinforced Layout clues Miner (RLM) to mine and detect the most crucial layout graph for long-term navigation via a customised reinforcement learning strategy. Moreover, the Structured Evolving Module (SEM) is proposed to maintain the structured graph-based state during navigation, where the state is gradually evolved to learn the object-level spatial-temporal relationship. The experiments on the R2R and R4R datasets show that the proposed SEvol model improves VLN models' performance by large margins, e.g., +3% absolute SPL accuracy for NvEM and +8% for EnvDrop on the R2R test set.

We present a method to simulate movement in interaction with computers, using Model Predictive Control (MPC). The method starts from understanding interaction from an Optimal Feedback Control (OFC) perspective. We assume that users aim to minimize an internalized cost function, subject to the constraints imposed by the human body and the interactive system. In contrast to previous linear approaches used in HCI, MPC can compute optimal controls for nonlinear systems. This allows us to use state-of-the-art biomechanical models and handle nonlinearities that occur in almost any interactive system. Instead of torque actuation, our model employs second-order muscles acting directly at the joints. We compare three different cost functions and evaluate the simulated trajectories against user movements in a Fitts' Law type pointing study with four different interaction techniques. Our results show that the combination of distance, control, and joint acceleration cost matches individual users' movements best, and predicts movements with an accuracy that is within the between-user variance. To aid HCI researchers and designers, we introduce CFAT, a novel method to identify maximum voluntary torques in joint-actuated models based on experimental data, and give practical advice on how to simulate human movement for different users, interaction techniques, and tasks.

For autonomous quadruped robot navigation in various complex environments, a typical SOTA system is composed of four main modules -- mapper, global planner, local planner, and command-tracking controller -- in a hierarchical manner. In this paper, we build a robust and safe local planner which is designed to generate a velocity plan to track a coarsely planned path from the global planner. Previous works used waypoint-based methods (e.g. Proportional-Differential control and pure pursuit) which simplify the path tracking problem to local point-goal navigation. However, they suffer from frequent collisions in geometrically complex and narrow environments because of two reasons; the global planner uses a coarse and inaccurate model and the local planner is unable to track the global plan sufficiently well. Currently, deep learning methods are an appealing alternative because they can learn safety and path feasibility from experience more accurately. However, existing deep learning methods are not capable of planning for a long horizon. In this work, we propose a learning-based fully autonomous navigation framework composed of three innovative elements: a learned forward dynamics model (FDM), an online sampling-based model-predictive controller, and an informed trajectory sampler (ITS). Using our framework, a quadruped robot can autonomously navigate in various complex environments without a collision and generate a smoother command plan compared to the baseline method. Developing controllers for obstacle avoidance between polytopes is a challenging and necessary problem for navigation in tight spaces. Traditional approaches can only formulate the obstacle avoidance problem as an offline optimization problem. To address these challenges, we propose a duality-based safety-critical optimal control using nonsmooth control barrier functions for obstacle avoidance between polytopes, which can be solved in real-time with a QP-based optimization problem. A dual optimization problem is introduced to represent the minimum distance between polytopes and the Lagrangian function for the dual form is applied to construct a control barrier function. We validate the obstacle avoidance with the proposed dual formulation for L-shaped (sofa-shaped) controlled robot in a corridor environment. We demonstrate real-time tight obstacle avoidance with non-conservative maneuvers on a moving sofa (piano) problem with nonlinear dynamics.

Linear mixed models (LMMs) are instrumental for regression analysis with structured dependence, such as grouped, clustered, or multilevel data. However, selection among the covariates--while accounting for this structured dependence--remains a challenge. We introduce a Bayesian decision analysis for subset selection with LMMs. Using a Mahalanobis loss function that incorporates the structured dependence, we derive optimal linear coefficients for (i) any given subset of variables and (ii) all subsets of variables that satisfy a cardinality constraint. Crucially, these estimates inherit shrinkage or regularization and uncertainty quantification from the underlying Bayesian model, and apply for any well-specified Bayesian LMM. More broadly, our decision analysis strategy deemphasizes the role of a single "best" subset, which is often unstable and limited in its information content, and instead favors a collection of near-optimal subsets. This collection is summarized by key member subsets and variable-specific importance metrics. Customized subset search and out-of-sample approximation algorithms are provided for more scalable computing. These tools are applied to simulated data and a longitudinal physical activity dataset, and demonstrate excellent prediction, estimation, and selection ability.

Collision avoidance is a widely investigated topic in robotic applications. When applying collision avoidance techniques to a mobile robot, how to deal with the spatial structure of the robot still remains a challenge. In this paper, we design a configuration-aware safe control law by solving a Quadratic Programming (QP) with designed Control Barrier Functions (CBFs) constraints, which can safely navigate a mobile robotic arm to a desired region while avoiding collision with environmental obstacles. The advantage of our approach is that it correctly and in an elegant way incorporates the spatial structure of the mobile robotic arm. This is achieved by merging geometric restrictions among mobile robotic arm links into CBFs constraints. Simulations on a rigid rod and the modeled mobile robotic arm are performed to verify the feasibility and time-efficiency of proposed method. Numerical results about the time consuming for different degrees of freedom illustrate that our method scales well with dimension.

The past few years have witnessed an increasing interest in improving the perception performance of LiDARs on autonomous vehicles. While most of the existing works focus on developing new deep learning algorithms or model architectures, we study the problem from the physical design perspective, i.e., how different placements of multiple LiDARs influence the learning-based perception. To this end, we introduce an easy-to-compute information-theoretic surrogate metric to quantitatively and fast evaluate LiDAR placement for 3D detection of different types of objects. We also present a new data collection, detection model training and evaluation framework in the realistic CARLA simulator to evaluate disparate multi-LiDAR configurations. Using several prevalent placements inspired by the designs of self-driving companies, we show the correlation between our surrogate metric and object detection performance of different representative algorithms on KITTI through extensive experiments, validating the effectiveness of our LiDAR placement evaluation approach. Our results show that sensor placement is non-negligible in 3D point cloud-based object detection, which will contribute up to 10% performance discrepancy in terms of average precision in challenging 3D object detection settings. We believe that this is one of the first studies to quantitatively investigate the influence of LiDAR placement on perception performance.

While deep neural networks (DNNs) have strengthened the performance of cooperative multi-agent reinforcement learning (c-MARL), the agent policy can be easily perturbed by adversarial examples. Considering the safety critical applications of c-MARL, such as traffic management, power management and unmanned aerial vehicle control, it is crucial to test the robustness of c-MARL algorithm before it was deployed in reality. Existing adversarial attacks for MARL could be used for testing, but is limited to one robustness aspects (e.g., reward, state, action), while c-MARL model could be attacked from any aspect. To overcome the challenge, we propose MARLSafe, the first robustness testing framework for c-MARL algorithms. First, motivated by Markov Decision Process (MDP), MARLSafe consider the robustness of c-MARL algorithms comprehensively from three aspects, namely state robustness, action robustness and reward robustness. Any c-MARL algorithm must simultaneously satisfy these robustness aspects to be considered secure. Second, due to the scarceness of c-MARL attack, we propose c-MARL attacks as robustness testing algorithms from multiple aspects. Experiments on \textit{SMAC} environment reveals that many state-of-the-art c-MARL algorithms are of low robustness in all aspect, pointing out the urgent need to test and enhance robustness of c-MARL algorithms.

In this work, we develop quantization and variable-length source codecs for the feedback links in linear-quadratic-Gaussian (LQG) control systems. We prove that for any fixed control performance, the approaches we propose nearly achieve lower bounds on communication cost that have been established in prior work. In particular, we refine the analysis of a classical achievability approach with an eye towards more practical details. Notably, in the prior literature the source codecs used to demonstrate the (near) achievability of these lower bounds are often implicitly assumed to be time-varying. For single-input single-output (SISO) plants, we prove that it suffices to consider time-invariant quantization and source coding. This result follows from analyzing the long-term stochastic behavior of the system's quantized measurements and reconstruction errors. To our knowledge, this time-invariant achievability result is the first in the literature.

Reinforcement learning (RL) has shown great success in solving many challenging tasks via use of deep neural networks. Although using deep learning for RL brings immense representational power, it also causes a well-known sample-inefficiency problem. This means that the algorithms are data-hungry and require millions of training samples to converge to an adequate policy. One way to combat this issue is to use action advising in a teacher-student framework, where a knowledgeable teacher provides action advice to help the student. This work considers how to better leverage uncertainties about when a student should ask for advice and if the student can model the teacher to ask for less advice. The student could decide to ask for advice when it is uncertain or when both it and its model of the teacher are uncertain. In addition to this investigation, this paper introduces a new method to compute uncertainty for a deep RL agent using a secondary neural network. Our empirical results show that using dual uncertainties to drive advice collection and reuse may improve learning performance across several Atari games.
