This paper examines the separation of wireless communication and radar signals, thereby guaranteeing cohabitation and acting as a panacea to spectrum sensing. First, considering that the channel impulse response was known by the receivers (communication and radar), we showed that the optimizing beamforming weights mitigate the interference caused by signals and improve the physical layer security (PLS) of the system. Furthermore, when the channel responses were unknown, we designed an interference filter as a low-complex noise and interference cancellation autoencoder. By mitigating the interference on the legitimate users, the PLS was guaranteed. Results showed that even for a low signal-to-noise ratio, the autoencoder produces low root-mean-square error (RMSE) values.

We consider a wireless communication system with a passive eavesdropper, in which a transmitter and legitimate receiver generate and use key bits to secure the transmission of their data. These bits are added to and used from a pool of available key bits. In this work, we analyze the reliability in terms of the probability that the budget of available key bits will be exhausted. In addition, we investigate the latency before a transmission can take place. Since security, reliability, and latency are three important metrics for modern communication systems, it is of great interest to jointly analyze them in relation to the system parameters. Interestingly, we show under what conditions the system may remain in an active state indefinitely, i.e., never run out of available secret-key bits. The results presented in this work can be used by system designers to adjust the system parameters in such a way that the requirements of the application in terms of both reliability and latency are met.

In this paper, we consider waveform design for dualfunction radar-communication systems based on multiple-inputmultiple-out arrays. To achieve better Rician target detection performance, we use the relative entropy associated with the formulated detection problem as the design metric. We also impose a multiuser interference energy constraint on the waveforms to ensure the achievable sum-rate of the communications. Two algorithms are presented to tackle the nonlinear non-convex waveform design problem. In the first algorithm, we derive a quadratic function to minorize the objective function. To tackle the quadratically constrained quadratic programming problem at each iteration, a semidefinite relaxation approach followed by a rank-one decomposition procedure and an efficient alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) are proposed, respectively. In the second algorithm, we present a novel ADMM algorithm to tackle the optimization problem and employ an efficient minorization-maximization approach in the inner loop of the ADMM algorithm. Numerical results demonstrate the superiority of both algorithms. Moreover, the presented algorithms can be extended to synthesize peak-to-average-power ratio constrained waveforms, which allows the radio frequency amplifier to operate at an increased efficiency.

In this article, we propose a reactive task allocation architecture for a multi-agent system for scenarios where the tasks arrive at random times and are grouped into multiple queues. Two stage tasks are considered where every task has a beginning, an intermediate and a final part, typical in pick-and-drop and inspect-and-report scenarios. A centralized auction-based task allocation system is proposed, where an auction system takes into consideration bids submitted by the agents for individual tasks, current length of the queues and the waiting times of the tasks in the queues to decide on a task allocation strategy. The costs associated with these considerations, along with the constraints of having unique mappings between tasks and agents and constraints on the maximum number of agents that can be assigned to a queue, results in a Linear Integer Program (LIP) that is solved using the SCIP solver. For the scenario where the queue lengths are penalized but not the waiting times, we demonstrate that the auction system allocates tasks in a manner that all the queue lengths become constant, which is termed balancing. For the scenarios where both the costs are considered, we qualitatively analyse the effect of the choice of the relative weights on the resulting task allocation and provide guidelines for the choice of the weights. We present simulation results that illustrate the balanced allocation of tasks and validate the analysis for the trade-off between the costs related to queue lengths and task waiting times.

This work proposes a dynamic and adversarial resource allocation problem in a graph environment, which is referred to as the dynamic Defender-Attacker Blotto (dDAB) game. A team of defender robots is tasked to ensure numerical advantage at every node in the graph against a team of attacker robots. The engagement is formulated as a discrete-time dynamic game, where the two teams reallocate their robots in sequence and each robot can move at most one hop at each time step. The game terminates with the attacker's victory if any node has more attacker robots than defender robots. Our goal is to identify the necessary and sufficient number of defender robots to guarantee defense. Through a reachability analysis, we first solve the problem for the case where the attacker team stays as a single group. The results are then generalized to the case where the attacker team can freely split and merge into subteams. Crucially, our analysis indicates that there is no incentive for the attacker team to split, which significantly reduces the search space for the attacker's winning strategies and also enables us to design defender counter-strategies using superposition. We also present an efficient numerical algorithm to identify the necessary and sufficient number of defender robots to defend a given graph. Finally, we present illustrative examples to verify the efficacy of the proposed framework.

We introduce a model for multi-agent interaction problems to understand how a heterogeneous team of agents should organize its resources to tackle a heterogeneous team of attackers. This model is inspired by how the human immune system tackles a diverse set of pathogens. The key property of this model is "cross-reactivity" which enables a particular defender type to respond strongly to some attackers but weakly to a few different types of attackers. Due to this, the optimal defender distribution that minimizes the harm incurred by attackers is supported on a discrete set. This allows the defender team to allocate resources to a few types and yet tackle a large number of attacker types. We study this model in different settings to characterize a set of guiding principles for control problems with heterogeneous teams of agents, e.g., sensitivity of the harm to sub-optimal defender distributions, teams consisting of a small number of attackers and defenders, estimating and tackling an evolving attacker distribution, and competition between defenders that gives near-optimal behavior using decentralized computation of the control. We also compare this model with reinforcement-learned policies for the defender team.

The joint communication and sensing (JCS) system can provide higher spectrum efficiency and load-saving for 6G machine-type communication (MTC) applications by merging necessary communication and sensing abilities with unified spectrum and transceivers. In order to suppress the mutual interference between the communication and radar sensing signals to improve the communication reliability and radar sensing accuracy, we propose a novel code-division orthogonal frequency division multiplex (CD-OFDM) JCS MTC system, where MTC users can simultaneously and continuously conduct communication and sensing with each other. {\color{black} We propose a novel CD-OFDM JCS signal and corresponding successive-interference-cancellation (SIC) based signal processing technique that obtains code-division multiplex (CDM) gain, which is compatible with the prevalent orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) communication system.} To model the unified JCS signal transmission and reception process, we propose a novel unified JCS channel model. Finally, the simulation and numerical results are shown to verify the feasibility of the CD-OFDM JCS MTC system {\color{black} and the error propagation performance}. We show that the CD-OFDM JCS MTC system can achieve not only more reliable communication but also comparably robust radar sensing compared with the precedent OFDM JCS system, especially in low signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR) regime.

In this paper, a novel transmissive reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) enabled uplink communication system with orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) is investigated. Specifically, a non-conventional receiver architecture equipped with a single receiving horn antenna and a transmissive RIS is first proposed, and a far-near field channel model based on planar waves and spherical waves is also given. Then, in order to maximize the system sum-rate of uplink communications, we formulate a joint optimization problem over subcarrier allocation, power allocation and RIS transmissive coefficient design while taking account of user quality-of-service (QoS) constraint. Due to the coupling of optimization variables, the optimization problem is non-convex, so it is challenging to solve it directly. In order to tackle this problem, the alternating optimization (AO) algorithm is utilized to decouple the optimization variables and divide the problem into two sub-problems to solve. First, the problem of joint subcarrier allocation and power allocation is solved via the Lagrangian dual decomposition method. Then, the RIS transmissive coefficient design scheme can be obtained by applying difference-of-convex (DC) programming, successive convex approximation (SCA) and penalty function methods. Finally, the two sub-problems are iterated alternately until convergence is achieved. Numerical results verify that the proposed algorithm has good convergence performance and can improve sum-rate of the proposed system compared with other benchmark algorithms.

In this paper, we investigate the coexistence of a single cell massive MIMO communication system with a MIMO radar. We consider the case where the massive MIMO BS is aware of the radar's existence and treats it as a non-serviced user, but the radar is unaware of the communication system's existence and treats the signals transmitted by both the BS and the communication users as noise. Using results from random matrix theory, we derive the rates achievable by the communication system and the radar. We then use these expressions to obtain the achievable rate regions for the proposed joint radar and communications system. We observe that due to the availability of a large number of degrees of freedom at the mMIMO BS, results in minimal interference even without co-design. Finally we corroborate our findings via detailed numerical simulations and verify the validity of the results derived previously under different settings.

We study the two-party communication complexity of functions with large outputs, and show that the communication complexity can greatly vary depending on what output model is considered. We study a variety of output models, ranging from the open model, in which an external observer can compute the outcome, to the XOR model, in which the outcome of the protocol should be the bitwise XOR of the players' local outputs. This model is inspired by XOR games, which are widely studied two-player quantum games. We focus on the question of error-reduction in these new output models. For functions of output size k, applying standard error reduction techniques in the XOR model would introduce an additional cost linear in k. We show that no dependency on k is necessary. Similarly, standard randomness removal techniques, incur a multiplicative cost of $2^k$ in the XOR model. We show how to reduce this factor to O(k). In addition, we prove analogous error reduction and randomness removal results in the other models, separate all models from each other, and show that some natural problems, including Set Intersection and Find the First Difference, separate the models when the Hamming weights of their inputs is bounded. Finally, we show how to use the rank lower bound technique for our weak output models.

Deriving strategies for multiple agents under adversarial scenarios poses a significant challenge in attaining both optimality and efficiency. In this paper, we propose an efficient defense strategy for cooperative defense against a group of attackers in a convex environment. The defenders aim to minimize the total number of attackers that successfully enter the target set without prior knowledge of the attacker's strategy. Our approach involves a two-scale method that decomposes the problem into coordination against a single attacker and assigning defenders to attackers. We first develop a coordination strategy for multiple defenders against a single attacker, implementing online convex programming. This results in the maximum defense-winning region of initial joint states from which the defender can successfully defend against a single attacker. We then propose an allocation algorithm that significantly reduces computational effort required to solve the induced integer linear programming problem. The allocation guarantees defense performance enhancement as the game progresses. We perform various simulations to verify the efficiency of our algorithm compared to the state-of-the-art approaches, including the one using the Gazabo platform with Robot Operating System.
