The analysis of animal movement has gained attention recently. New continuous-time models and statistical methods have been developed to estimate some sets related to their movements, such as the home-range and the core-area among others, when the information of the trajectory is provided by a GPS. Because data transfer costs and GPS battery life are practical constraints in ecological studies, the experimental designer must make critical sampling decisions in order to maximize information. To capture fine-scale motion, long-term behavior must be sacrificed, and vice versa. To overcome this limitation, we introduce the on--off sampling scheme, where the GPS is alternately on and off. This scheme is already used in practice but with insufficient statistical theoretical support. We prove the consistency of home-range estimators with an underlying reflected diffusion model under this sampling method (in terms of the Hausdorff distance). The same rate of convergence is achieved as in the case where the GPS is always on for the whole experiment. This is illustrated by a simulation study and real data. We also provide estimators of the stationary distribution, its level sets (which give estimators of the core area), and the drift function.

The problem of sequential anomaly detection and identification is considered in the presence of a sampling constraint. Specifically, multiple data streams are generated by distinct sources and the goal is to quickly identify those that exhibit ``anomalous'' behavior, when it is not possible to sample every source at each time instant. Thus, in addition to a stopping rule, which determines when to stop sampling, and a decision rule, which indicates which sources to identify as anomalous upon stopping, one needs to specify a sampling rule that determines which sources to sample at each time instant. The focus of this work is on ordering sampling rules, which sample the data sources, among those currently estimated as anomalous (resp. non-anomalous), for which the corresponding local test statistics have the smallest (resp. largest) values. It is shown that with an appropriate design, which is specified explicitly, an ordering sampling rule leads to the optimal expected time for stopping, among all policies that satisfy the same sampling and error constraints, to a first-order asymptotic approximation as the false positive and false negative error rates under control both go to zero. This is the first asymptotic optimality result for ordering sampling rules when multiple sources can be sampled per time instant. Moreover, this is established under a general setup where the number of anomalies is not required to be a priori known. A novel proof technique is introduced, which unifies different versions of the problem regarding the homogeneity of the sources and prior information on the number of anomalies.

Teams that have trained large Transformer-based models have reported training instabilities at large scale that did not appear when training with the same hyperparameters at smaller scales. Although the causes of such instabilities are of scientific interest, the amount of resources required to reproduce them has made investigation difficult. In this work, we seek ways to reproduce and study training stability and instability at smaller scales. First, we focus on two sources of training instability described in previous work: the growth of logits in attention layers (Dehghani et al., 2023) and divergence of the output logits from the log probabilities (Chowdhery et al., 2022). By measuring the relationship between learning rate and loss across scales, we show that these instabilities also appear in small models when training at high learning rates, and that mitigations previously employed at large scales are equally effective in this regime. This prompts us to investigate the extent to which other known optimizer and model interventions influence the sensitivity of the final loss to changes in the learning rate. To this end, we study methods such as warm-up, weight decay, and the $\mu$Param (Yang et al., 2022), and combine techniques to train small models that achieve similar losses across orders of magnitude of learning rate variation. Finally, to conclude our exploration we study two cases where instabilities can be predicted before they emerge by examining the scaling behavior of model activation and gradient norms.

Miura surfaces are the solutions of a constrained nonlinear elliptic system of equations. This system is derived by homogenization from the Miura fold, which is a type of origami fold with multiple applications in engineering. A previous inquiry, gave suboptimal conditions for existence of solutions and proposed an $H^2$-conformal finite element method to approximate them. In this paper, the existence of Miura surfaces is studied using a mixed formulation. It is also proved that the constraints propagate from the boundary to the interior of the domain for well-chosen boundary conditions. Then, a numerical method based on a least-squares formulation, Taylor--Hood finite elements and a Newton method is introduced to approximate Miura surfaces. The numerical method is proved to converge at order one in space and numerical tests are performed to demonstrate its robustness.

Validation metrics are key for the reliable tracking of scientific progress and for bridging the current chasm between artificial intelligence (AI) research and its translation into practice. However, increasing evidence shows that particularly in image analysis, metrics are often chosen inadequately in relation to the underlying research problem. This could be attributed to a lack of accessibility of metric-related knowledge: While taking into account the individual strengths, weaknesses, and limitations of validation metrics is a critical prerequisite to making educated choices, the relevant knowledge is currently scattered and poorly accessible to individual researchers. Based on a multi-stage Delphi process conducted by a multidisciplinary expert consortium as well as extensive community feedback, the present work provides the first reliable and comprehensive common point of access to information on pitfalls related to validation metrics in image analysis. Focusing on biomedical image analysis but with the potential of transfer to other fields, the addressed pitfalls generalize across application domains and are categorized according to a newly created, domain-agnostic taxonomy. To facilitate comprehension, illustrations and specific examples accompany each pitfall. As a structured body of information accessible to researchers of all levels of expertise, this work enhances global comprehension of a key topic in image analysis validation.

Distinguishing two classes of candidate models is a fundamental and practically important problem in statistical inference. Error rate control is crucial to the logic but, in complex nonparametric settings, such guarantees can be difficult to achieve, especially when the stopping rule that determines the data collection process is not available. In this paper we develop a novel e-value construction that leverages the so-called predictive recursion (PR) algorithm designed to recursively fit nonparametric mixture models. The resulting PRe-value affords anytime valid inference uniformly over stopping rules and is shown to be efficient in the sense that it achieves the maximal growth rate under the alternative relative to the mixture model being fit by PR. In the special case of testing the density for log-concavity, the PRe-value test is shown empirically to be significantly more efficient than a recently proposed anytime valid test based on universal inference.

Time-parallel time integration has received a lot of attention in the high performance computing community over the past two decades. Indeed, it has been shown that parallel-in-time techniques have the potential to remedy one of the main computational drawbacks of parallel-in-space solvers. In particular, it is well-known that for large-scale evolution problems space parallelization saturates long before all processing cores are effectively used on today's large scale parallel computers. Among the many approaches for time-parallel time integration, ParaDiag schemes have proved themselves to be a very effective approach. In this framework, the time stepping matrix or an approximation thereof is diagonalized by Fourier techniques, so that computations taking place at different time steps can be indeed carried out in parallel. We propose here a new ParaDiag algorithm combining the Sherman-Morrison-Woodbury formula and Krylov techniques. A panel of diverse numerical examples illustrates the potential of our new solver. In particular, we show that it performs very well compared to different ParaDiag algorithms recently proposed in the literature.

Conformers have recently been proposed as a promising modelling approach for automatic speech recognition (ASR), outperforming recurrent neural network-based approaches and transformers. Nevertheless, in general, the performance of these end-to-end models, especially attention-based models, is particularly degraded in the case of long utterances. To address this limitation, we propose adding a fully-differentiable memory-augmented neural network between the encoder and decoder of a conformer. This external memory can enrich the generalization for longer utterances since it allows the system to store and retrieve more information recurrently. Notably, we explore the neural Turing machine (NTM) that results in our proposed Conformer-NTM model architecture for ASR. Experimental results using Librispeech train-clean-100 and train-960 sets show that the proposed system outperforms the baseline conformer without memory for long utterances.

Mediation analysis is widely used for investigating direct and indirect causal pathways through which an effect arises. However, many mediation analysis studies are challenged by missingness in the mediator and outcome. In general, when the mediator and outcome are missing not at random, the direct and indirect effects are not identifiable without further assumptions. In this work, we study the identifiability of the direct and indirect effects under some interpretable mechanisms that allow for missing not at random in the mediator and outcome. We evaluate the performance of statistical inference under those mechanisms through simulation studies and illustrate the proposed methods via the National Job Corps Study.

Discovering causal relationships from observational data is a fundamental yet challenging task. In some applications, it may suffice to learn the causal features of a given response variable, instead of learning the entire underlying causal structure. Invariant causal prediction (ICP, Peters et al., 2016) is a method for causal feature selection which requires data from heterogeneous settings. ICP assumes that the mechanism for generating the response from its direct causes is the same in all settings and exploits this invariance to output a subset of the causal features. The framework of ICP has been extended to general additive noise models and to nonparametric settings using conditional independence testing. However, nonparametric conditional independence testing often suffers from low power (or poor type I error control) and the aforementioned parametric models are not suitable for applications in which the response is not measured on a continuous scale, but rather reflects categories or counts. To bridge this gap, we develop ICP in the context of transformation models (TRAMs), allowing for continuous, categorical, count-type, and uninformatively censored responses (we show that, in general, these model classes do not allow for identifiability when there is no exogenous heterogeneity). We propose TRAM-GCM, a test for invariance of a subset of covariates, based on the expected conditional covariance between environments and score residuals which satisfies uniform asymptotic level guarantees. For the special case of linear shift TRAMs, we propose an additional invariance test, TRAM-Wald, based on the Wald statistic. We implement both proposed methods in the open-source R package "tramicp" and show in simulations that under the correct model specification, our approach empirically yields higher power than nonparametric ICP based on conditional independence testing.

Most existing methods for unsupervised industrial anomaly detection train a separate model for each object category. This kind of approach can easily capture the category-specific feature distributions, but results in high storage cost and low training efficiency. In this paper, we propose a unified mixed-attention auto encoder (MAAE) to implement multi-class anomaly detection with a single model. To alleviate the performance degradation due to the diverse distribution patterns of different categories, we employ spatial attentions and channel attentions to effectively capture the global category information and model the feature distributions of multiple classes. Furthermore, to simulate the realistic noises on features and preserve the surface semantics of objects from different categories which are essential for detecting the subtle anomalies, we propose an adaptive noise generator and a multi-scale fusion module for the pre-trained features. MAAE delivers remarkable performances on the benchmark dataset compared with the state-of-the-art methods.
