In 2018, the US Census Bureau designed a new data reconstruction and re-identification attack and tested it against their 2010 data release. The specific attack executed by the Bureau allows an attacker to infer the race and ethnicity of respondents with average 75% precision for 85% of the respondents, assuming that the attacker knows the correct age, sex, and address of the respondents. They interpreted the attack as exceeding the Bureau's privacy standards, and so introduced stronger privacy protections for the 2020 Census in the form of the TopDown Algorithm (TDA). This paper demonstrates that race and ethnicity can be inferred from the TDA-protected census data with substantially better precision and recall, using less prior knowledge: only the respondents' address. Race and ethnicity can be inferred with average 75% precision for 98% of the respondents, and can be inferred with 100% precision for 11% of the respondents. The inference is done by simply assuming that the race/ethnicity of the respondent is that of the majority race/ethnicity for the respondent's census block. The conclusion to draw from this simple demonstration is NOT that the Bureau's data releases lack adequate privacy protections. Indeed it is the purpose of the data releases to allow this kind of inference. The problem, rather, is that the Bureau's criteria for measuring privacy is flawed and overly pessimistic.

Embodied agents, trained to explore and navigate indoor photorealistic environments, have achieved impressive results on standard datasets and benchmarks. So far, experiments and evaluations have involved domestic and working scenes like offices, flats, and houses. In this paper, we build and release a new 3D space with unique characteristics: the one of a complete art museum. We name this environment ArtGallery3D (AG3D). Compared with existing 3D scenes, the collected space is ampler, richer in visual features, and provides very sparse occupancy information. This feature is challenging for occupancy-based agents which are usually trained in crowded domestic environments with plenty of occupancy information. Additionally, we annotate the coordinates of the main points of interest inside the museum, such as paintings, statues, and other items. Thanks to this manual process, we deliver a new benchmark for PointGoal navigation inside this new space. Trajectories in this dataset are far more complex and lengthy than existing ground-truth paths for navigation in Gibson and Matterport3D. We carry on extensive experimental evaluation using our new space for evaluation and prove that existing methods hardly adapt to this scenario. As such, we believe that the availability of this 3D model will foster future research and help improve existing solutions.

The Census TopDown Algorithm (TDA) is a disclosure avoidance system using differential privacy for privacy-loss accounting. The algorithm ingests the final, edited version of the 2020 Census data and the final tabulation geographic definitions. The algorithm then creates noisy versions of key queries on the data, referred to as measurements, using zero-Concentrated Differential Privacy. Another key aspect of the TDA are invariants, statistics that the Census Bureau has determined, as matter of policy, to exclude from the privacy-loss accounting. The TDA post-processes the measurements together with the invariants to produce a Microdata Detail File (MDF) that contains one record for each person and one record for each housing unit enumerated in the 2020 Census. The MDF is passed to the 2020 Census tabulation system to produce the 2020 Census Redistricting Data (P.L. 94-171) Summary File. This paper describes the mathematics and testing of the TDA for this purpose.

Recruitment in large organisations often involves interviewing a large number of candidates. The process is resource intensive and complex. Therefore, it is important to carry it out efficiently and effectively. Planning the selection process consists of several problems, each of which maps to one or the other well-known computing problem. Research that looks at each of these problems in isolation is rich and mature. However, research that takes an integrated view of the problem is not common. In this paper, we take two of the most important aspects of the application processing problem, namely review/interview panel creation and interview scheduling. We have implemented our approach as a prototype system and have used it to automatically plan the interview process of a real-life data set. Our system provides a distinctly better plan than the existing practice, which is predominantly manual. We have explored various algorithmic options and have customised them to solve these panel creation and interview scheduling problems. We have evaluated these design options experimentally on a real data set and have presented our observations. Our prototype and experimental process and results may be a very good starting point for a full-fledged development project for automating application processing process.

Multi-camera vehicle tracking is one of the most complicated tasks in Computer Vision as it involves distinct tasks including Vehicle Detection, Tracking, and Re-identification. Despite the challenges, multi-camera vehicle tracking has immense potential in transportation applications including speed, volume, origin-destination (O-D), and routing data generation. Several recent works have addressed the multi-camera tracking problem. However, most of the effort has gone towards improving accuracy on high-quality benchmark datasets while disregarding lower camera resolutions, compression artifacts and the overwhelming amount of computational power and time needed to carry out this task on its edge and thus making it prohibitive for large-scale and real-time deployment. Therefore, in this work we shed light on practical issues that should be addressed for the design of a multi-camera tracking system to provide actionable and timely insights. Moreover, we propose a real-time city-scale multi-camera vehicle tracking system that compares favorably to computationally intensive alternatives and handles real-world, low-resolution CCTV instead of idealized and curated video streams. To show its effectiveness, in addition to integration into the Regional Integrated Transportation Information System (RITIS), we participated in the 2021 NVIDIA AI City multi-camera tracking challenge and our method is ranked among the top five performers on the public leaderboard.

As machine learning is increasingly applied to high-impact, high-risk domains, there have been a number of new methods aimed at making AI models more human interpretable. Despite the recent growth of interpretability work, there is a lack of systematic evaluation of proposed techniques. In this work, we propose HIVE (Human Interpretability of Visual Explanations), a novel human evaluation framework for visual interpretability methods that allows for falsifiable hypothesis testing, cross-method comparison, and human-centered evaluation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work of its kind. Using HIVE, we conduct IRB-approved human studies with nearly 1000 participants and evaluate four methods that represent the diversity of computer vision interpretability works: GradCAM, BagNet, ProtoPNet, and ProtoTree. Our results suggest that explanations engender human trust, even for incorrect predictions, yet are not distinct enough for users to distinguish between correct and incorrect predictions. We open-source HIVE to enable future studies and to encourage more human-centered approaches to interpretability research.

We present a pipelined multiplier with reduced activities and minimized interconnect based on online digit-serial arithmetic. The working precision has been truncated such that $p<n$ bits are used to compute $n$ bits product, resulting in significant savings in area and power. The digit slices follow variable precision according to input, increasing upto $p$ and then decreases according to the error profile. Pipelining has been done to achieve high throughput and low latency which is desirable for compute intensive inner products. Synthesis results of the proposed designs have been presented and compared with the non-pipelined online multiplier, pipelined online multiplier with full working precision and conventional serial-parallel and array multipliers. For $8, 16, 24$ and $32$ bit precision, the proposed low power pipelined design show upto $38\%$ and $44\%$ reduction in power and area respectively compared to the pipelined online multiplier without working precision truncation.

Unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) methods for person re-identification (re-ID) aim at transferring re-ID knowledge from labeled source data to unlabeled target data. Although achieving great success, most of them only use limited data from a single-source domain for model pre-training, making the rich labeled data insufficiently exploited. To make full use of the valuable labeled data, we introduce the multi-source concept into UDA person re-ID field, where multiple source datasets are used during training. However, because of domain gaps, simply combining different datasets only brings limited improvement. In this paper, we try to address this problem from two perspectives, \ie{} domain-specific view and domain-fusion view. Two constructive modules are proposed, and they are compatible with each other. First, a rectification domain-specific batch normalization (RDSBN) module is explored to simultaneously reduce domain-specific characteristics and increase the distinctiveness of person features. Second, a graph convolutional network (GCN) based multi-domain information fusion (MDIF) module is developed, which minimizes domain distances by fusing features of different domains. The proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art UDA person re-ID methods by a large margin, and even achieves comparable performance to the supervised approaches without any post-processing techniques.

With the rapid increase of large-scale, real-world datasets, it becomes critical to address the problem of long-tailed data distribution (i.e., a few classes account for most of the data, while most classes are under-represented). Existing solutions typically adopt class re-balancing strategies such as re-sampling and re-weighting based on the number of observations for each class. In this work, we argue that as the number of samples increases, the additional benefit of a newly added data point will diminish. We introduce a novel theoretical framework to measure data overlap by associating with each sample a small neighboring region rather than a single point. The effective number of samples is defined as the volume of samples and can be calculated by a simple formula $(1-\beta^{n})/(1-\beta)$, where $n$ is the number of samples and $\beta \in [0,1)$ is a hyperparameter. We design a re-weighting scheme that uses the effective number of samples for each class to re-balance the loss, thereby yielding a class-balanced loss. Comprehensive experiments are conducted on artificially induced long-tailed CIFAR datasets and large-scale datasets including ImageNet and iNaturalist. Our results show that when trained with the proposed class-balanced loss, the network is able to achieve significant performance gains on long-tailed datasets.

Sufficient training data is normally required to train deeply learned models. However, the number of pedestrian images per ID in person re-identification (re-ID) datasets is usually limited, since manually annotations are required for multiple camera views. To produce more data for training deeply learned models, generative adversarial network (GAN) can be leveraged to generate samples for person re-ID. However, the samples generated by vanilla GAN usually do not have labels. So in this paper, we propose a virtual label called Multi-pseudo Regularized Label (MpRL) and assign it to the generated images. With MpRL, the generated samples will be used as supplementary of real training data to train a deep model in a semi-supervised learning fashion. Considering data bias between generated and real samples, MpRL utilizes different contributions from predefined training classes. The contribution-based virtual labels are automatically assigned to generated samples to reduce ambiguous prediction in training. Meanwhile, MpRL only relies on predefined training classes without using extra classes. Furthermore, to reduce over-fitting, a regularized manner is applied to MpRL to regularize the learning process. To verify the effectiveness of MpRL, two state-of-the-art convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are adopted in our experiments. Experiments demonstrate that by assigning MpRL to generated samples, we can further improve the person re-ID performance on three datasets i.e., Market-1501, DukeMTMCreID, and CUHK03. The proposed method obtains +6.29%, +6.30% and +5.58% improvements in rank-1 accuracy over a strong CNN baseline respectively, and outperforms the state-of-the- art methods.

Person Re-identification (re-id) faces two major challenges: the lack of cross-view paired training data and learning discriminative identity-sensitive and view-invariant features in the presence of large pose variations. In this work, we address both problems by proposing a novel deep person image generation model for synthesizing realistic person images conditional on pose. The model is based on a generative adversarial network (GAN) and used specifically for pose normalization in re-id, thus termed pose-normalization GAN (PN-GAN). With the synthesized images, we can learn a new type of deep re-id feature free of the influence of pose variations. We show that this feature is strong on its own and highly complementary to features learned with the original images. Importantly, we now have a model that generalizes to any new re-id dataset without the need for collecting any training data for model fine-tuning, thus making a deep re-id model truly scalable. Extensive experiments on five benchmarks show that our model outperforms the state-of-the-art models, often significantly. In particular, the features learned on Market-1501 can achieve a Rank-1 accuracy of 68.67% on VIPeR without any model fine-tuning, beating almost all existing models fine-tuned on the dataset.
