The design of SQL is based on a three-valued logic (3VL), rather than the familiar Boolean logic. 3VL adds a truth value unknown to true and false to handle nulls. Viewed as indispensable for SQL expressiveness, it is at the same time much criticized for unintuitive behavior of queries and being a source of programmer mistakes. We show that, contrary to the widely held view, SQL could have been designed based on the standard Boolean logic, without any loss of expressiveness and without giving up nulls. The approach itself follows SQL's evaluation, which only retains tuples for which conditions in WHERE evaluate to true. We show that conflating unknown with false leads to an equally expressive version of SQL that does not use the third truth value. Queries written under the two-valued semantics can be efficiently translated into the standard SQL and thus executed on any existing RDBMS. These results cover the core of the SQL 1999 Standard: SELECT-FROM-WHERE-GROUP BY-HAVING queries extended with subqueries and IN/EXISTS/ANY/ALL conditions, and recursive queries. We also investigate new optimization rules enabled by the two-valued SQL, and show that for many queries, including most of those found in benchmarks such as TPC-H and TPC-DS, there is no difference between three- and two-valued versions.

Current challenges of the manufacturing industry require modular and changeable manufacturing systems that can be adapted to variable conditions with little effort. At the same time, production recipes typically represent important company know-how that should not be directly tied to changing plant configurations. Thus, there is a need to model general production recipes independent of specific plant layouts. For execution of such a recipe however, a binding to then available production resources needs to be made. In this contribution, select a suitable modeling language to model and execute such recipes. Furthermore, we present an approach to solve the issue of recipe modeling and execution in modular plants using semantically modeled capabilities and skills as well as BPMN. We make use of BPMN to model \emph{capability processes}, i.e. production processes referencing abstract descriptions of resource functions. These capability processes are not bound to a certain plant layout, as there can be multiple resources fulfilling the same capability. For execution, every capability in a capability process is replaced by a skill realizing it, effectively creating a \emph{skill process} consisting of various skill invocations. The presented solution is capable of orchestrating and executing complex processes that integrate production steps with typical IT functionalities such as error handling, user interactions and notifications. Benefits of the approach are demonstrated using a flexible manufacturing system.

MIMO spatial multiplexing is an essential feature to increase the communication data rates in current and future cellular systems. Currently, the ns-3 lte module leverages an abstraction model for 2x2 MIMO with spatial multiplexing of two streams; while mmwave and nr modules were lacking the spatial multiplexing option until this work, since the ns-3 models were not supporting the usage of multiple antennas for spatial multiplexing and an abstraction model such as the one used in the lte module is not suitable for the mmWave frequencies. In this paper, we propose, implement and evaluate models for ns-3 and the nr module to enable Dual-Polarized MIMO (DP-MIMO). The proposed extension for the ns-3 supports multiple antennas for DP-MIMO with spatial multiplexing of two streams and can be used by any ns-3 module that is compatible with the ns-3 antenna array-based models, such as nr and mmwave modules. We leverage this ns-3 extension to model DP-MIMO by exploiting dual-polarized antennas and their orthogonality under line-of-sight conditions, as it happens at high-frequency bands, to send the two data streams. The proposed model does not rely on abstraction, as the MIMO model in the ns-3 lte module, and can thus model more realistically the propagation differences of the two streams, correlation, inter-stream interference, and allows design and evaluation of the rank adaptation algorithms. Additionally, we propose and evaluate an adaptive rank adaptation scheme and compare it with a fixed scheme. The developed DP-MIMO spatial multiplexing models for the ns-3 simulator and the nr module are openly available.

While utilization of digital agents to support crucial decision making is increasing, trust in suggestions made by these agents is hard to achieve. However, it is essential to profit from their application, resulting in a need for explanations for both the decision making process and the model. For many systems, such as common black-box models, achieving at least some explainability requires complex post-processing, while other systems profit from being, to a reasonable extent, inherently interpretable. We propose a rule-based learning system specifically conceptualised and, thus, especially suited for these scenarios. Its models are inherently transparent and easily interpretable by design. One key innovation of our system is that the rules' conditions and which rules compose a problem's solution are evolved separately. We utilise independent rule fitnesses which allows users to specifically tailor their model structure to fit the given requirements for explainability.

Enterprise cloud developers have to build applications that are resilient to failures and interruptions. We advocate for, formalize, implement, and evaluate a simple, albeit effective, fault-tolerant programming model for the cloud based on actors, reliable message delivery, and retry orchestration. Our model simultaneously guarantees that (1) failed actor invocations are retried until success and (2) that a strict happens before relationship is preserved across failures within each distributed chain of invocations and retries. These guarantees make it possible to productively develop fault-tolerant distributed applications leveraging cloud services, ranging from classic problems of concurrency theory to enterprise applications. Built as a service mesh, our runtime can compose application components written in any programming language and scale with the application. We measure overhead relative to reliable message queues. Using an application inspired by a typical enterprise scenario, we assess fault tolerance and the impact of fault recovery on performance.

Dynamic topological logic ($\mathbf{DTL}$) is a trimodal logic designed for reasoning about dynamic topological systems. It was shown by Fern\'andez-Duque that the natural set of axioms for $\mathbf{DTL}$ is incomplete, but he provided a complete axiomatisation in an extended language. In this paper, we consider dynamic topological logic over scattered spaces, which are topological spaces where every nonempty subspace has an isolated point. Scattered spaces appear in the context of computational logic as they provide semantics for provability and enjoy definable fixed points. We exhibit the first sound and complete dynamic topological logic in the original trimodal language. In particular, we show that the version of $\mathbf{DTL}$ based on the class of scattered spaces is finitely axiomatisable over the original language, and that the natural axiomatisation is sound and complete.

We observe and analyze usage of the login nodes of the leadership class Summit supercomputer from the perspective of an ordinary user -- not a system administrator -- by periodically sampling user activities (job queues, running processes, etc.) for two full years (2020-2021). Our findings unveil key usage patterns that evidence misuse of the system, including gaming the policies, impairing I/O performance, and using login nodes as a sole computing resource. Our analysis highlights observed patterns for the execution of complex computations (workflows), which are key for processing large-scale applications.

Many forms of dependence manifest themselves over time, with behavior of variables in dynamical systems as a paradigmatic example. This paper studies temporal dependence in dynamical systems from a logical perspective, by extending a minimal modal base logic of static functional dependencies. We define a logic for dynamical systems with single time steps, provide a complete axiomatic proof calculus, and show the decidability of the satisfiability problem for a substantial fragment. The system comes in two guises: modal and first-order, that naturally complement each other. Next, we consider a timed semantics for our logic, as an intermediate between state spaces and temporal universes for the unfoldings of a dynamical system. We prove completeness and decidability by combining techniques from dynamic-epistemic logic and modal logic of functional dependencies with complex terms for objects. Also, we extend these results to the timed logic with functional symbols and term identity. Finally, we conclude with a brief outlook on how the system proposed here connects with richer temporal logics of system behavior, and with dynamic topological logic.

We introduce a fast solver for the phase field crystal (PFC) and functionalized Cahn-Hilliard (FCH) equations with periodic boundary conditions on a rectangular domain that features the preconditioned Nesterov accelerated gradient descent (PAGD) method. We discretize these problems with a Fourier collocation method in space, and employ various second-order schemes in time. We observe a significant speedup with this solver when compared to the preconditioned gradient descent (PGD) method. With the PAGD solver, fully implicit, second-order-in-time schemes are not only feasible to solve the PFC and FCH equations, but also do so more efficiently than some semi-implicit schemes in some cases where accuracy issues are taken into account. Benchmark computations of five different schemes for the PFC and FCH equations are conducted and the results indicate that, for the FCH experiments, the fully implicit schemes (midpoint rule and BDF2 equipped with the PAGD as a nonlinear time marching solver) perform better than their IMEX versions in terms of computational cost needed to achieve a certain precision. For the PFC, the results are not as conclusive as in the FCH experiments, which, we believe, is due to the fact that the nonlinearity in the PFC is milder nature compared to the FCH equation. We also discuss some practical matters in applying the PAGD. We introduce an averaged Newton preconditioner and a sweeping-friction strategy as heuristic ways to choose good preconditioner parameters. The sweeping-friction strategy exhibits almost as good a performance as the case of the best manually tuned parameters.

With the rise of knowledge graph (KG), question answering over knowledge base (KBQA) has attracted increasing attention in recent years. Despite much research has been conducted on this topic, it is still challenging to apply KBQA technology in industry because business knowledge and real-world questions can be rather complicated. In this paper, we present AliMe-KBQA, a bold attempt to apply KBQA in the E-commerce customer service field. To handle real knowledge and questions, we extend the classic "subject-predicate-object (SPO)" structure with property hierarchy, key-value structure and compound value type (CVT), and enhance traditional KBQA with constraints recognition and reasoning ability. We launch AliMe-KBQA in the Marketing Promotion scenario for merchants during the "Double 11" period in 2018 and other such promotional events afterwards. Online results suggest that AliMe-KBQA is not only able to gain better resolution and improve customer satisfaction, but also becomes the preferred knowledge management method by business knowledge staffs since it offers a more convenient and efficient management experience.

Text classification is an important and classical problem in natural language processing. There have been a number of studies that applied convolutional neural networks (convolution on regular grid, e.g., sequence) to classification. However, only a limited number of studies have explored the more flexible graph convolutional neural networks (convolution on non-grid, e.g., arbitrary graph) for the task. In this work, we propose to use graph convolutional networks for text classification. We build a single text graph for a corpus based on word co-occurrence and document word relations, then learn a Text Graph Convolutional Network (Text GCN) for the corpus. Our Text GCN is initialized with one-hot representation for word and document, it then jointly learns the embeddings for both words and documents, as supervised by the known class labels for documents. Our experimental results on multiple benchmark datasets demonstrate that a vanilla Text GCN without any external word embeddings or knowledge outperforms state-of-the-art methods for text classification. On the other hand, Text GCN also learns predictive word and document embeddings. In addition, experimental results show that the improvement of Text GCN over state-of-the-art comparison methods become more prominent as we lower the percentage of training data, suggesting the robustness of Text GCN to less training data in text classification.
