In this paper, we solve a joint cooperative localization and path planning problem for a group of Autonomous Aerial Vehicles (AAVs) in GPS-denied areas using nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC). A moving horizon estimator (MHE) is used to estimate the vehicle states with the help of relative bearing information to known landmarks and other vehicles. The goal of the NMPC is to devise optimal paths for each vehicle between a given source and destination while maintaining desired localization accuracy. Estimating localization covariance in the NMPC is computationally intensive, hence we develop an approximate analytical closed form expression based on the relationship between covariance and path lengths to landmarks. Using this expression while computing NMPC commands reduces the computational complexity significantly. We present numerical simulations to validate the proposed approach for different numbers of vehicles and landmark configurations. We also compare the results with EKF-based estimation to show the superiority of the proposed closed form approach.
Automated vehicles require the ability to cooperate with humans for smooth integration into today's traffic. While the concept of cooperation is well known, developing a robust and efficient cooperative trajectory planning method is still a challenge. One aspect of this challenge is the uncertainty surrounding the state of the environment due to limited sensor accuracy. This uncertainty can be represented by a Partially Observable Markov Decision Process. Our work addresses this problem by extending an existing cooperative trajectory planning approach based on Monte Carlo Tree Search for continuous action spaces. It does so by explicitly modeling uncertainties in the form of a root belief state, from which start states for trees are sampled. After the trees have been constructed with Monte Carlo Tree Search, their results are aggregated into return distributions using kernel regression. We apply two risk metrics for the final selection, namely a Lower Confidence Bound and a Conditional Value at Risk. It can be demonstrated that the integration of risk metrics in the final selection policy consistently outperforms a baseline in uncertain environments, generating considerably safer trajectories.
Mixed-dimensional elliptic equations exhibiting a hierarchical structure are commonly used to model problems with high aspect ratio inclusions, such as flow in fractured porous media. We derive general abstract estimates based on the theory of functional a posteriori error estimates, for which guaranteed upper bounds for the primal and dual variables and two-sided bounds for the primal-dual pair are obtained. We improve on the abstract results obtained with the functional approach by proposing four different ways of estimating the residual errors based on the extent the approximate solution has conservation properties, i.e.: (1) no conservation, (2) subdomain conservation, (3) grid-level conservation, and (4) exact conservation. This treatment results in sharper and fully computable estimates when mass is conserved either at the grid level or exactly, with a comparable structure to those obtained from grid-based a posteriori techniques. We demonstrate the practical effectiveness of our theoretical results through numerical experiments using four different discretization methods for synthetic problems and applications based on benchmarks of flow in fractured porous media.
The adoption of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for public safety applications has skyrocketed in the last years. Leveraging on Physical Random Access Channel (PRACH) preambles, in this paper we pioneer a novel localization technique for UAVs equipped with cellular base stations used in emergency scenarios. We exploit the new concept of Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS) modulation (tolerant to channel Doppler spread caused by UAVs motion) to build a fully standards-compliant OTFS-modulated PRACH transmission and reception scheme able to perform time-of-arrival (ToA) measurements. First, we analyze such novel ToA ranging technique, both analytically and numerically, to accurately and iteratively derive the distance between localized users and the points traversed by the UAV along its trajectory. Then, we determine the optimal UAV speed as a trade-off between the accuracy of the ranging technique and the power needed by the UAV to reach and keep its speed during emergency operations. Finally, we demonstrate that our solution outperforms standard PRACH-based localization techniques in terms of Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) by about 20% in quasi-static conditions and up to 80% in high-mobility conditions.
Collision avoidance is a widely investigated topic in robotic applications. When applying collision avoidance techniques to a mobile robot, how to deal with the spatial structure of the robot still remains a challenge. In this paper, we design a configuration-aware safe control law by solving a Quadratic Programming (QP) with designed Control Barrier Functions (CBFs) constraints, which can safely navigate a mobile robotic arm to a desired region while avoiding collision with environmental obstacles. The advantage of our approach is that it correctly and in an elegant way incorporates the spatial structure of the mobile robotic arm. This is achieved by merging geometric restrictions among mobile robotic arm links into CBFs constraints. Simulations on a rigid rod and the modeled mobile robotic arm are performed to verify the feasibility and time-efficiency of proposed method. Numerical results about the time consuming for different degrees of freedom illustrate that our method scales well with dimension.
This paper studies the application of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (C-NOMA) networks with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT). We aim for maximizing the rate of the strong user with guaranteed weak user's quality of service (QoS) by jointly optimizing power splitting factors, beamforming coefficients, and RIS reflection coefficients in two transmission phases. The formulated problem is difficult to solve due to its complex and non-convex constraints. To tackle this challenging problem, we first use alternating optimization (AO) framework to transform it into three subproblems, and then use the penalty-based arithmetic-geometric mean approximation (PBAGM) algorithm and the successive convex approximation (SCA)-based method to solve them. Numerical results verify the superiority of the proposed algorithm over the baseline schemes.
Active learning is a promising alternative to alleviate the issue of high annotation cost in the computer vision tasks by consciously selecting more informative samples to label. Active learning for object detection is more challenging and existing efforts on it are relatively rare. In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid approach to address this problem, where the instance-level uncertainty and diversity are jointly considered in a bottom-up manner. To balance the computational complexity, the proposed approach is designed as a two-stage procedure. At the first stage, an Entropy-based Non-Maximum Suppression (ENMS) is presented to estimate the uncertainty of every image, which performs NMS according to the entropy in the feature space to remove predictions with redundant information gains. At the second stage, a diverse prototype (DivProto) strategy is explored to ensure the diversity across images by progressively converting it into the intra-class and inter-class diversities of the entropy-based class-specific prototypes. Extensive experiments are conducted on MS COCO and Pascal VOC, and the proposed approach achieves state of the art results and significantly outperforms the other counterparts, highlighting its superiority.
We consider the classic motion planning problem defined over a roadmap in which a vehicle seeks to find an optimal path from a source to a destination in presence of an attacker who can launch attacks on the vehicle over any edge of the roadmap. The vehicle (defender) has the capability to switch on/off a countermeasure that can detect and permanently disable the attack if it occurs concurrently. We model the problem of traveling along en edge using the framework of a simultaneous zero-sum dynamic game (edge-game) with a stopping state played between an attacker and defender. We characterize the Nash equiliria of an edge-game and provide closed form expressions for two actions per player. We further provide an analytic and approximate expression on the value of an edge-game and characterize conditions under which it grows sub-linearly with the number of stages. We study the sensitivity of Nash equilibrium to the (i) cost of using the countermeasure, (ii) cost of motion and (iii) benefit of disabling the attack. The solution of an edge-game is used to formulate and solve for the secure planning problem known as a meta-game. We design an efficient heuristic by converting the problem to a shortest path problem using the edge cost as the solution of corresponding edge-games. We illustrate our findings through several insightful simulations.
This article presents an in-depth review of the topic of path following for autonomous robotic vehicles, with a specific focus on vehicle motion in two dimensional space (2D). From a control system standpoint, path following can be formulated as the problem of stabilizing a path following error system that describes the dynamics of position and possibly orientation errors of a vehicle with respect to a path, with the errors defined in an appropriate reference frame. In spite of the large variety of path following methods described in the literature we show that, in principle, most of them can be categorized in two groups: stabilization of the path following error system expressed either in the vehicle's body frame or in a frame attached to a "reference point" moving along the path, such as a Frenet-Serret (F-S) frame or a Parallel Transport (P-T) frame. With this observation, we provide a unified formulation that is simple but general enough to cover many methods available in the literature. We then discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each method, comparing them from the design and implementation standpoint. We further show experimental results of the path following methods obtained from field trials testing with under-actuated and fully-actuated autonomous marine vehicles. In addition, we introduce open-source Matlab and Gazebo/ROS simulation toolboxes that are helpful in testing path following methods prior to their integration in the combined guidance, navigation, and control systems of autonomous vehicles.
Proactive dialogue system is able to lead the conversation to a goal topic and has advantaged potential in bargain, persuasion and negotiation. Current corpus-based learning manner limits its practical application in real-world scenarios. To this end, we contribute to advance the study of the proactive dialogue policy to a more natural and challenging setting, i.e., interacting dynamically with users. Further, we call attention to the non-cooperative user behavior -- the user talks about off-path topics when he/she is not satisfied with the previous topics introduced by the agent. We argue that the targets of reaching the goal topic quickly and maintaining a high user satisfaction are not always converge, because the topics close to the goal and the topics user preferred may not be the same. Towards this issue, we propose a new solution named I-Pro that can learn Proactive policy in the Interactive setting. Specifically, we learn the trade-off via a learned goal weight, which consists of four factors (dialogue turn, goal completion difficulty, user satisfaction estimation, and cooperative degree). The experimental results demonstrate I-Pro significantly outperforms baselines in terms of effectiveness and interpretability.
In this monograph, I introduce the basic concepts of Online Learning through a modern view of Online Convex Optimization. Here, online learning refers to the framework of regret minimization under worst-case assumptions. I present first-order and second-order algorithms for online learning with convex losses, in Euclidean and non-Euclidean settings. All the algorithms are clearly presented as instantiation of Online Mirror Descent or Follow-The-Regularized-Leader and their variants. Particular attention is given to the issue of tuning the parameters of the algorithms and learning in unbounded domains, through adaptive and parameter-free online learning algorithms. Non-convex losses are dealt through convex surrogate losses and through randomization. The bandit setting is also briefly discussed, touching on the problem of adversarial and stochastic multi-armed bandits. These notes do not require prior knowledge of convex analysis and all the required mathematical tools are rigorously explained. Moreover, all the proofs have been carefully chosen to be as simple and as short as possible.
