Programmable data planes offer precise control over the low-level processing steps applied to network packets, serving as a valuable tool for analysing malicious flows in the field of intrusion detection. Albeit with limitations on physical resources and capabilities, they allow for the efficient extraction of detailed traffic information, which can then be utilised by Machine Learning (ML) algorithms responsible for identifying security threats. In addressing resource constraints, existing solutions in the literature rely on compressing network data through the collection of statistical traffic features in the data plane. While this compression saves memory resources in switches and minimises the burden on the control channel between the data and the control plane, it also results in a loss of information available to the Network Intrusion Detection System (NIDS), limiting access to packet payload, categorical features, and the semantic understanding of network communications, such as the behaviour of packets within traffic flows. This paper proposes P4DDLe, a framework that exploits the flexibility of P4-based programmable data planes for packet-level feature extraction and pre-processing. P4DDLe leverages the programmable data plane to extract raw packet features from the network traffic, categorical features included, and to organise them in a way that the semantics of traffic flows are preserved. To minimise memory and control channel overheads, P4DDLe selectively processes and filters packet-level data, so that only the features required by the NIDS are collected. The experimental evaluation with recent Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack data demonstrates that the proposed approach is very efficient in collecting compact and high-quality representations of network flows, ensuring precise detection of DDoS attacks.

Predicting node labels on a given graph is a widely studied problem with many applications, including community detection and molecular graph prediction. This paper considers predicting multiple node labeling functions on graphs simultaneously and revisits this problem from a multitask learning perspective. For a concrete example, consider overlapping community detection: each community membership is a binary node classification task. Due to complex overlapping patterns, we find that negative transfer is prevalent when we apply naive multitask learning to multiple community detection, as task relationships are highly nonlinear across different node labeling. To address the challenge, we develop an algorithm to cluster tasks into groups based on a higher-order task affinity measure. We then fit a multitask model on each task group, resulting in a boosting procedure on top of the baseline model. We estimate the higher-order task affinity measure between two tasks as the prediction loss of one task in the presence of another task and a random subset of other tasks. Then, we use spectral clustering on the affinity score matrix to identify task grouping. We design several speedup techniques to compute the higher-order affinity scores efficiently and show that they can predict negative transfers more accurately than pairwise task affinities. We validate our procedure using various community detection and molecular graph prediction data sets, showing favorable results compared with existing methods. Lastly, we provide a theoretical analysis to show that under a planted block model of tasks on graphs, our affinity scores can provably separate tasks into groups.

In mixed-initiative conversational search systems, clarifying questions are used to help users who struggle to express their intentions in a single query. These questions aim to uncover user's information needs and resolve query ambiguities. We hypothesize that in scenarios where multimodal information is pertinent, the clarification process can be improved by using non-textual information. Therefore, we propose to add images to clarifying questions and formulate the novel task of asking multimodal clarifying questions in open-domain, mixed-initiative conversational search systems. To facilitate research into this task, we collect a dataset named Melon that contains over 4k multimodal clarifying questions, enriched with over 14k images. We also propose a multimodal query clarification model named Marto and adopt a prompt-based, generative fine-tuning strategy to perform the training of different stages with different prompts. Several analyses are conducted to understand the importance of multimodal contents during the query clarification phase. Experimental results indicate that the addition of images leads to significant improvements of up to 90% in retrieval performance when selecting the relevant images. Extensive analyses are also performed to show the superiority of Marto compared with discriminative baselines in terms of effectiveness and efficiency.

Conventional distributed approaches to coverage control may suffer from lack of convergence and poor performance, due to the fact that agents have limited information, especially in non-convex discrete environments. To address this issue, we extend the approach of [Marden 2016] which demonstrates how a limited degree of inter-agent communication can be exploited to overcome such pitfalls in one-dimensional discrete environments. The focus of this paper is on extending such results to general dimensional settings. We show that the extension is convergent and keeps the approximation ratio of 2, meaning that any stable solution is guaranteed to have a performance within 50% of the optimal one. The experimental results exhibit that our algorithm outperforms several state-of-the-art algorithms, and also that the runtime is scalable.

This paper investigates the potential of employing Large Language Models (LLMs) to detect privacy breaches within WeChat Mini Programs. Given the widespread use of Mini Programs and growing concerns about data privacy, this research seeks to determine if LLMs can effectively identify instances of privacy leakage within this ecosystem. Through meticulous analysis and experimentation, we aim to highlight the efficacy of LLMs in safeguarding user privacy and security within the WeChat Mini Program environment, thereby contributing to a more secure digital landscape.

Network telemetry based on data models is expected to become the standard mechanism for collecting operational data from network devices efficiently. But the wide variety of standard and proprietary data models along with the different implementations of telemetry protocols offered by network vendors, become a barrier when monitoring heterogeneous network infrastructures. To facilitate the integration and sharing of context information related to model-driven telemetry, this work proposes a semantic network inventory that integrates new information models specifically developed to capture context information in a vendor-agnostic fashion using current standards defined for context management. To automate the integration of this context information within the network inventory, a reference architecture is designed. Finally, a prototype of the solution is implemented and validated through a case study that illustrates how the network inventory can ease the operation of model-driven telemetry in multi-vendor networks.

The paper aims to address load imbalance caused by high in-degree distribution in graphs by applying the idea of rhizome to vertex-centric message-driven graph processing. Rhizome construction of the graph creates multiple named vertex address for any number of single large in-degree vertices. It then allows other vertices to point to any of the named addresses thus sharing the in-degree load. The rhizomes internally communicate and remain consistent to provide a unified and correct view of the vertex. Simulated experimental results show performance speed ups for BFS graph traversal on large chip sizes for the tested input graph datasets containing highly skewed in-degree distribution. The improvements come from sharing the in-degree compute workload among memory-processing elements and also lowering contention on the network-on-chip.

We consider applications of neural networks in nonlinear system identification and formulate a hypothesis that adjusting general network structure by incorporating frequency information or other known orthogonal transform, should result in an efficient neural network retaining its universal properties. We show that such a structure is a universal approximator and that using any orthogonal transform in a proposed way implies regularization during training by adjusting the learning rate of each parameter individually. We empirically show in particular, that such a structure, using the Fourier transform, outperforms equivalent models without orthogonality support.

The integration of physiological computing into mixed-initiative human-robot interaction systems offers valuable advantages in autonomous task allocation by incorporating real-time features as human state observations into the decision-making system. This approach may alleviate the cognitive load on human operators by intelligently allocating mission tasks between agents. Nevertheless, accommodating a diverse pool of human participants with varying physiological and behavioral measurements presents a substantial challenge. To address this, resorting to a probabilistic framework becomes necessary, given the inherent uncertainty and partial observability on the human's state. Recent research suggests to learn a Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP) model from a data set of previously collected experiences that can be solved using Offline Reinforcement Learning (ORL) methods. In the present work, we not only highlight the potential of partially observable representations and physiological measurements to improve human operator state estimation and performance, but also enhance the overall mission effectiveness of a human-robot team. Importantly, as the fixed data set may not contain enough information to fully represent complex stochastic processes, we propose a method to incorporate model uncertainty, thus enabling risk-sensitive sequential decision-making. Experiments were conducted with a group of twenty-six human participants within a simulated robot teleoperation environment, yielding empirical evidence of the method's efficacy. The obtained adaptive task allocation policy led to statistically significant higher scores than the one that was used to collect the data set, allowing for generalization across diverse participants also taking into account risk-sensitive metrics.

While neural network approaches have made significant strides in resolving classical signal processing problems, it is often the case that hybrid approaches that draw insight from both signal processing and neural networks produce more complete solutions. In this paper, we present a hybrid classical digital signal processing/deep neural network (DSP/DNN) approach to source separation (SS) highlighting the theoretical link between variational autoencoder and classical approaches to SS. We propose a system that transforms the single channel under-determined SS task to an equivalent multichannel over-determined SS problem in a properly designed latent space. The separation task in the latent space is treated as finding a variational block-wise disentangled representation of the mixture. We show empirically, that the design choices and the variational formulation of the task at hand motivated by the classical signal processing theoretical results lead to robustness to unseen out-of-distribution data and reduction of the overfitting risk. To address the resulting permutation issue we explicitly incorporate a novel differentiable permutation loss function and augment the model with a memory mechanism to keep track of the statistics of the individual sources.

Face recognition technology has advanced significantly in recent years due largely to the availability of large and increasingly complex training datasets for use in deep learning models. These datasets, however, typically comprise images scraped from news sites or social media platforms and, therefore, have limited utility in more advanced security, forensics, and military applications. These applications require lower resolution, longer ranges, and elevated viewpoints. To meet these critical needs, we collected and curated the first and second subsets of a large multi-modal biometric dataset designed for use in the research and development (R&D) of biometric recognition technologies under extremely challenging conditions. Thus far, the dataset includes more than 350,000 still images and over 1,300 hours of video footage of approximately 1,000 subjects. To collect this data, we used Nikon DSLR cameras, a variety of commercial surveillance cameras, specialized long-rage R&D cameras, and Group 1 and Group 2 UAV platforms. The goal is to support the development of algorithms capable of accurately recognizing people at ranges up to 1,000 m and from high angles of elevation. These advances will include improvements to the state of the art in face recognition and will support new research in the area of whole-body recognition using methods based on gait and anthropometry. This paper describes methods used to collect and curate the dataset, and the dataset's characteristics at the current stage.
